Third IEEE International Workshop on Systems Management

Preliminary Call for Participation

Newport, Rhode Island
April 22-24, 1998

This workshop is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society. The setting is
the scenic summer resort of Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

WORKSHOP SCOPE

The scope of this workshop is managing networked applications, including
the increasingly pervasive applet. This topic is motivated by the
interest in thin clients, the potential to exploit new technologies for
management purposes, and the deployment of business-critical distributed
applications.

Networked applications include: collaborative systems, electronic
commerce, Internet/Intranet-based applications, and, more generally,
distributed applications. Such applications are of increasing prevalence.
Further, networked applications have special management challenges,
especially in the areas of software distribution (e.g., real-time
versioning/updating), policy definition and enforcement, monitoring,
tuning, security, configuration, and fault correction.

Topics of particular interest to this workshop include:

Management of electronic commerce
Management of Internet/Intranet-based applications
Policy definition and enforcement in distributed environments
Management issues in collaborative systems
Exploiting collaborative systems for systems management
Management of workflow systems
Monitoring, tuning, and synchronized management of distributed systems
Network virtual computing environments
Management architectures for distributed environments
Case studies, especially relating to the management of networked applications

WORKSHOP FORMAT

This workshop is the third in a series of highly successful
forums for the discussion of research in the area of systems
management. Previous workshops have been held in Los Angeles,
California and Toronto, Ontario. A theme common to these
workshops is bringing together three groups: (a) customers of
management technologies, (b) researchers in academia and industry
labs, and (b) developers of management technologies.

The workshop is structured to encourage interaction between
participants. The bulk of the sessions consist of technical
papers, with breaks between sessions to encourage follow-on
discussions. Several panel discussions are anticipated as well,
including one addressing industry experiences. Also, there will
be two keynote speakers, one on each of morning of the first two
days of the workshop.

A novel aspect of this year's workshop is having one evening
devoted to work-in-progress (WIP). WIP will be presented as
poster sessions. Selection of WIP presentations will be based on
a 2-5 page extended abstract. It is intended that WIP sessions
will appeal both to: (a) academic researchers seeking early
comments on their work and (b) industry professionals who lack
the time to develop a full-length paper.

All submitted papers will be reviewed by experts in the area of
submission. All accepted contributions (including WIP abstracts) will be
eligible for publication in the bound proceedings of the workshop. At
least one of the authors of each paper must register for the workshop to
present the paper.

Papers are to be submitted in English. The cover page should include
paper title, author(s) full name, affiliations, complete address(es),
telephone number(s), and electronic mail address(es). Full-length papers
should have a brief abstract and be no longer than 12 pages (6,000 words),
including references and figures.

WIP submissions should be in the format of an extended abstract that is no
longer than 2 pages (1,000 words). WIP papers should specify: the problem
addressed, its importance, solutions investigated, and the novelty of the
solution(s) proposed. Selection of WIP submissions will be based on how
effectively these considerations are conveyed, relevance to the workshop,
and the balance between topic areas.

Proposals for panel discussions are also solicited. Panels are scheduled
for 1.5 hours. Proposals should specify the topic, panel chair, and
participants. Please include a two page abstract that highlights key
points for discussion and areas of controversy that will be addressed.

Submission of technical papers should be sent by email in postscript to
hanan@csd.uwo.ca with the subject line "SMW3 Paper Submission: <file
name>," where <file name> indicates the compression used if any (e.g.,
paper.ps.gz). WIP submissions and proposals for panel discussions without
figures and without special formatting considerations may be sent as ASCII
text with the subject line "SMW3 WIP Submission" and "SMW3 Panel Proposal"
(respectively). If electronic submission is not possible, please submit 4
paper copies to Professor Hanan Lutfiyya (Vice Chair) at the address
below.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Newport, Rhode Island is a summer resort town. It is approximately a one
and one half hour drive from Boston, MA. Newport is well known for its
turn-of-the century mansions (as featured in the Great Gatsby movie), Jazz
festivals, and America's Cup class sailing. Newport also features a Cliff
Walk winding its way between rugged shorelines and colossal "summer
cottages" of the rich of the 1800's, as well as quaint, colonial New
England boutiques, taverns, restaurants and craftsman's shops amid cobble
stoned streets.

The conference will be held at the Newport Marriott Resort Hotel, 25
America's Cup Ave, Newport, Rhode Island, 02840, USA, Tele:+1-401-849-1000
or 800-458-3066 (within USA), Fax: +1 401-849-3422. The hotel includes
indoor swimming and racquet ball and is within walking distance of many of
Newport's attractions. Bus and limo services are available from Boston's
Logan Airport and Rhode Island's T.F. Green Airport (30 minutes from
Newport).

Hi,

This is regarding defintion of transport table in agentx mib.

Currently the definition is restricted to one session.

The scope for this needs to be extended to include multiple sessions per
connection to be in alignment with agentx draft.

proposal is to define connection table in terms of multiple sessions and
have a new object identifier connection index.

any suggestions?

I had posted this last week to mailing list but it did not go through as
the mailing list was not up.

Abstract

This memo defines an experimental portion of the Management
Information Base (MIB) for use with network management protocols in
the Internet community. In particular, it describes objects managing
SNMP agents that use the Agent Extensibility (AgentX) Protocol.

This memo specifies a MIB module in a manner that is both compliant
to the SNMPv2 SMI, and semantically identical to the peer SNMPv1
   definitions.

This memo does not specify a standard for the Internet community.

Internet Draft AgentX MIB 22 October 1997

1. The SNMP Network Management Framework

The SNMP Network Management Framework presently consists of three
   major components. They are:

   - the SMI, described in RFC 1902 [1] - the mechanisms used for
describing and naming objects for the purpose of management.

   - the MIB-II, STD 17, RFC 1213 [2] - the core set of managed objects
for the Internet suite of protocols.

   - the protocol, RFC 1157 [3] and/or RFC 1905 [4], - the protocol for
      accessing managed objects.

The Framework permits new objects to be defined for the purpose of
   experimentation and evaluation.

1.1. Object Definitions

Managed objects are accessed via a virtual information store, termed
the Management Information Base or MIB. Objects in the MIB are
defined using the subset of Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1)
defined in the SMI. In particular, each object type is named by an
OBJECT IDENTIFIER, an administratively assigned name. The object
type together with an object instance serves to uniquely identify a
specific instantiation of the object. For human convenience, we
often use a textual string, termed the descriptor, to also refer to
   the object type.

2. Introduction

The SNMP Agent Extensibility Protocol (AgentX) is a protocol used to
distribute the implementation of an SNMP agent amongst a single
"master agent" and multiple "subagents". See [5] for details about
   the AgentX protocol.

The goals of the AgentX MIB are:

   - List the set of subagents that currently have logical sessions
      open with the master agent.

   - Identify the subagent's type, vendor, transport address, AgentX
      protocol version and other characteristics.

   - Identify the set of MIB objects each subagent implements, the
context in which the objects are registered and the priority of
the registration. Provide statistics about the protocol operation
such as the number of packets to and from each subagent.

AgentX Working Group Expires April 1998 [Page 2]

Internet Draft AgentX MIB 22 October 1997

   - Determine protocol operational parameters such as the timeout
interval for responses from a subagent and the priority at which a
subagent registers a particular MIB region.

   - Allow (but do not require) managers to be able to modify AgentX
protocol operational parameters and to explicitly close subagent
      sessions with the master agent.

3. Overview !

This MIB is organized into four groups. The agentxGeneral group !
provides information describing the master agent's agentx support, !
including the protocol version supported and the supported transport !
mechanisms. The agentxConnection group provides information !
describing the current set of connections capable of carrying agentx !
sessions. The agentxSession group provides information describing !
the current set of AgentX sessions. The agentxRegistration group !
provides information describing the current set of registrations. !

Three tables form the heart of this mib. These are the connection, !
   session, and registration tables. !

Entries in the registration table exist in a many-to-one relationship !
with entries in the session table. This relationship is represented !
through the agentxRegSessionIndex object in a registration entry. To !
determine which session is responsible for a given registration !
entry, a manager can retrieve the value of agentxRegSessionIndex for !
that entry, and then use that value to retrieve the corresponding row !
of the session table. To determine which registration(s), if any, a !
given subagent session is responsible for, a manager can scan the !
registration table for entries in which agentxRegSessionIndex matches !
the value of the agentxSessionIndex of the session in question. !

Entries in the session table exist in a many-to-one relationship with !
entries in the connection table. This relationship is represented !
through the agentxSessionConnIndex object in a session entry. To !
determine which connection is carrying a given session, a manager can !
retrieve the value of agentxSessionConnIndex for that entry, and then !
use that value to retrieve the corresponding row of the connection !
table. To determine which session(s), if any, a given connection is !
carrying, a manager can scan the connection table for entries in !
which aagentxSessionConnIndex matches the value of the !
agentxConnIndex of the connection in question. !

7. Security Considerations
In most cases, MIBs are not themselves security risks; if SNMP |
security is operating as intended, the use of a MIB to view |
information about a system, or to change some parameter at the |
system, is a tool, not a threat. |

None of the read-only objects in this MIB reports a password, user |
data, or anything else that is particularly sensitive. If access to |
these objects is not limited by an appropriate access control policy, |
these objects can provide an attacker with information about a |
system's configuration and the services that that system is |
providing. Some enterprises view their network and system |
configurations themselves, as well as information about usage and |
performance, as corporate assets; such enterprises may wish to |
restrict SNMP access to most of the objects in the MIB. |

This MIB contains two read-write objects: agentxDefaultTimeout and |
agentxSAAdminStatus. Setting agentxDefaultTimeout to an |
inappropriately small value can prevent new subagent sessions from |
being usable. Setting agentxSAAdminStatus to an inappropriate value |
can effectively prevent access to management information, or provide |
access to inappropriate information. Since changes to either of |
these objects can adversely impact the manageability of a system, |
write access to these objects should be subject to an appropriate |
access control policy. Such a policy may be realized in an |
implementation by limiting support for these objects to read-only |

The copy of the agentx mib I have, from may 14, has a subagent table
and a registration table but no transport table. I know there was
some discussion about breaking up the subagent table, has that been
written up? Did I miss a draft somewhere?
