The original message said

"to return *all* the timezone file when receiving some sort of
specialized query"

so my understanding was that there should be one command which retrieves
*all* current TZ data, but of course there should be different commands
to query only selected data.

So embedded devices could just pull the data they need to keep a single
TZ up to date, but full-featured computers could pull all TZ
information, so when users want to select a different time zone then all
available zones are up to date.

Hi,

I thought I should introduce myself, since I'm one of your new
co-Chairs for the CALEXT Working Group. I have a fair amount of
experience as an IETF WG Chair and I hope that experience can be
useful in smoothing and expediting things for CALEXT. I am currently
co-chair of TRILL and was chair for a while of PPPEXT.

I also have some background in XML and was chair of the TRADE and ECML
WGs, both of which used XML, and co-chair of the XMLDSIG WG.

If you want to reach my co-Chair Amanda Anganes and myself, you can
email to calext-chairs@tools.ietf.org (note that that's at
tools.ietf.org, not ietf.org).

Thanks,
Donald

Hi everyone,

As we kick off the Calext WG, I'd like to introduce myself to the existing =
members of the calsify list and anyone new who may have joined after the WG=
was officially started. I am one of your co-chairs, along with Donald East=
lake, and I'm looking forward to diving into the world of iCalendar with yo=
u all.

My previous IETF experience has been with the OAuth and JOSE working groups=
, and I also contributed to the OpenID Connect specifications through the O=
penID Foundation. This will be my first co-Chair position, so I'd be happy =
to receive any feedback you may have as we go along.

As Donald mentioned in his email, you can always reach both of us via the c=
alext-chairs@tools.ietf.org mailing list, or feel free to email me directly=

Thanks,

<http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-daboo-icalendar-rscale> implementation
in my CalDAV server (based on libical and ICU4C), I'd love to see this
draft be taken on early in the WG milestones.

I also have a working VAVAILABILITY
<https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-daboo-calendar-availability>
implementation that I plan to interop test at the upcoming CalConnect
Conference <http://www.calconnect.org/calconnect31.shtml> so I have a
keen interest in this draft as well.

Looking forward to working with everyone.

Hello everybody!

A few words on why I think RSCALE (
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-daboo-icalendar-rscale) draft is important
to adopt as soon as possible.

For most of us in the Western World, the Gregorian calendar is the only
system we use, and its easy to assume the same for everybody else. But for
most people in the world this is not actually true: there are various
Islamic, Chinese, Korean, Hindu, Jewish calendaring systems that people use
for various purposes. In some countries one of these is the only official
calendar. Most people getting online in the next few years, billions of
them, will need some non-Gregorian calendar for their daily life.

Most of the issues with non-Gregorian calendars can be solved client-side.
Clients can show same event in any grid, and show dates in any system. But
this approach fails for recurring events: something that happens every
Islamic month or every Chinese year, birthdays or anniversaries for
example. RSCALE draft adds necessary iCalendar functionality to address
this need.

The draft was extensively discussed both at CalConnect and on this list. It
was first put for discussion here more than a year ago. At this point we
have at least 3 known implementations, including my implementation for
Google Calendar.

I believe it is important to make progress here, because lack of recognized
standard in this area leads to every vendor creating their own extensions
that nobody else understands. Thus breaking interoperability and damaging
the ecosystem. Already we see some API clients trying to put RRULEs with
X-LUNARYEAR=TRUE parameter into our system, which we fail to parse. As more
people get online in China, India and other countries this problem will
only get worse.

Hoping for speedy adoption of the RSCALE draft,
Grisha (@Google)

As stated previously, I support the adoption of this draft. This draft
has previously been discussed on this list and within CalConnect and
already has two interoperable implementations.

I am in favor of adopting the RSCALE draft as a CALEXT Working Group =

within the CalConnect community and there are at least two =
implementations. I also concur with Grisha=92s observations about the =
need for this draft to avoid divergence of implementations which are =

CalConnect expects to do some RSCALE testing at its coming =

As an author I feel obliged to support adoption of this draft as a WG work
item :-)

on that in the next few months.

I have just taken an action from the UK government's Data Standards Panel t=
o raise an issue with you. We were meeting to recommend RFC5545 and RFC6350=
as the standard mechanism for UK government to provide appointment & addre=
ss information to citizens. During the discussion, we noticed a discrepancy=
which will leave implementers with a choice: both IETF recommendations inc=
lude a way of specifying the geographic location of the item, but they do i=
t differently - and differently again from other IETF documents.

To put it simply, by example:

* iCalendar RFC5545 (3.8.1.6) uses "GEO:37.386013;-122.082932", in degrees =
north of the equator & 'east of the prime meridian'. But it also allows the=
location to be specified by reference to a vCard.

* vCard RFC6350 (6.5.2) recommends that its GEO tag uses RFC5870 'geo URI' =
which allows other CRS but defaults to WGS84, so the same position would ap=
pear as " GEO:geo: 37.386013\,-122.082932"

* Both of these are different from the current IETF draft for GeoJSON (http=
s://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-butler-geojson/), which insists on longi=
tude then latitude (like OGC KML).

iCalendar allows using vCard to provide details of the meeting location, bu=
t as vCard has been updated since then, this could result in the direct & i=
ndirect GEO tags having the same position presented in different ways - the=
former 'in line', and the latter using RFC5870.

I'm not sure that this necessarily needs tidying up urgently, but I think i=
t would make sense to do so at some future revision.

Yours

Peter
