I finished reading the Applicability statement draft =9602 and had a commen=
t regarding the references to the SNMP protocol and MIB data models.
There is an assumption that SNMP will be used and that other network manage=
ment protocols and data models will not be used.
I think this draft could be Network Management Protocol agnostic, but give =
some examples or use cases for reference, e.g., SNMP (and reference the EMA=
N MIB Modules), NETCONF, TR-069, TR-232, etc.

Thanks,

#29: IANA Considerations section needs more detail

Comment (by jparello@cisco.com):

UML Drawing is in asci and xml in this document.

IANA would have a model registered (as xml scmea). We would link to that
 model in the IANA section.

Procedurally Perhaps we need a tmp draft or work with the GUI. Nevil to
check how that would work as process.

In general sets within a models have sub/registries and can be used by
 other implementations such as snmp.

Lets look at IANA registries and ipfix sub table.

In general the power sets registry may be used independent of the eman
information model and goal is to make this obvious at IANA.

       Energy Management

Energy Management is a set of functions for
          measuring, modeling, planning, and optimizing
networks to ensure that the network elements and
attached devices use energy efficiently and is

appropriate for the nature of the application and
the cost constraints of the organization.
          Reference: Adapted from [ITU-T-M-3400<http://tools.ietf.org/html/=

          NOTES:
          1. Energy management refers to the activities,

Subject: Re: [eman] DRAFT minutes for our Orlando meeting

Thanks much to Nevil for taking well care of the minutes.

A few minor comments. For the framework it is state:

. Since this is the I-D that describes "IETF Energy Management,"
it needs to state a clear definition of Energy Management.

There is a definition of Energy Management in the framework
draft already so I think this is covered.

. This I-D also needs to indicate how it relates to Energy Management
    standards from other organisation.

The Applicability Statement does this, and the Introduction to the
framework document notes this. So, I think this also already covered.

On the Applicability Statement:

- Many changes (see slides), needs more text about ASHRAE 201P
=3D Now fairly stable; ready for WGLC once Framework is done

Actually we have not had changes, but the rest is correct.

It has been nine days since Nevil posted the minutes.
I think early next week would be a suitable time for he
and myself to finalize the minutes, so if there are any
other comments, please post them ASAP.
Thanks,

My one-para summary of the meeting is:

The Entity MIBv4 and EMAN Requirements are (nearly) completed. The
meeting focused on the EMAN Framework; in particular we explored the
question "should we develop the EMAN Information Model using UML, so
that it can be used by other organisations such as SCTE." That
question will be discussed further on the EMAN list. Meanwhile the
EMAN Framework authors will continue their work on that I-D; our

Today the Consumer Electronics Association announced a new
standards development effort:

CEA=92s R7.8 Modular Communications Interface for Energy Management
Subcommittee is developing a standard to enable consumer electronic devices
to communicate their energy usage information for example over a home
network as well as optionally respond to basic demand/response commands.
The standard will enable mapping to and from the NAESB/PAP10 EUI model
(North American Energy Standards Board) as well as utilize ANSI/CEA-2045
Modular Communications Interface for Energy Management messaging where
possible.

I will monitor developments in this process and fill them in on
EMAN details. For some purposes CEA is a U.S. trade association,
but many of the standards activities are global.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Energy Management Working Group of the IE=
TF.

Title : Energy Management (EMAN) Applicability Statement
	Author(s) : Brad Schoening
                          Mouli Chandramouli
                          Bruce Nordman
	Filename : draft-ietf-eman-applicability-statement-03.txt
	Pages : 30
	Date : 2013-04-18

Abstract:
The objective of Energy Management (EMAN) is to provide an
energy management framework for networked devices. This
document presents the applicability of the EMAN framework to a
variety of scenarios. This document lists use cases and target
devices that can potentially implement the EMAN framework and
associated SNMP MIB modules. These use cases are useful for
identifying requirements for the framework and MIBs. Further,
we describe the relationship of the EMAN framework to relevant
other energy monitoring standards and architectures.

An updated version of the draft has been submitted.

Thanks for the comments from Brian Hedstorm.

The open issue on ASHRAE has been closed; the draft contains a section
with a synopsis on ASHRAE standards and its relationship to EMAN.
If there is any other aspects that should be considered, we welcome
feedback from the WG.

As discussed in the WG, the Applicability Statement draft would be
finalised after the Framework and MIB drafts are baselined.

Thanks
Brad, Bruce and Mouli

Hello all,=20

An updated version of the draft has been submitted.

The OID tree of the MIB has been revised and updated.

Thanks to the comments of Brian Hedstorm and Alan Luchuk.

Regarding the question of eoRelationID and eoProxID as read-only objects;
since they are UUID and the relationship are defined by the bitmap
eoRelationship, which is a read-write object to indicate relationship
between energy objects.

An open issue has been added to possibly to have two smaller groups of
objects as optional for implementation. Please provide your feedback.

Thanks
John, Benoit and Mouli

Hello all,

An updated version of the Energy Monitoring MIB draft has been submitted.

Many thanks to the diligent reviews of Alan Luchuk and Brian Hedstorm.

 - All the editorial comments are incorporated.
 - The UML and OID tree are updated
 - Power Attributes is used instead of Power Characteristics
 - eoEnergyParametersTable has been revised with indices
eoEnergyObjectIndex and eoEnergyParametersIndex
 - Open issues which need discussion from the WG are listed

We hope to address some of the open issues before the next IETF.
Once the requirements and Framework are baselined, the Monitoring MIB
draft can be finalised.

Thanks very much
Brad, Juergen, Thomas, Benoit and Mouli

In discussions with Brad and Nevil, we noted that the requirements draft
says:

  5.2.8. Nominal Voltage Range

The standard must provide means for reporting the nominal voltage
   range for each Power Interface.

5.2.9. Nominal AC Frequency

The standard must provide means for reporting the nominal AC
   frequency for each Power Interface.

In Orlando we discussed adding a URI where lots of useful static
information
about a brand/model of device could be posted, including this.

It seems elegant to remove the above two requirements and replace it with
one saying something like:

The standard must provide means for reporting a URI that links to
   static data about a device.

This information would be for the entire device, whereas the existing
requirements
are for each power interface.

I realize that the standard is in IESG review so that this would require
some
extra effort but it would simplify the MIB and provide extra capability.

There are two requirements that are related:

  5.2.7. Type Of current

The standard must provide means for reporting the type of current (AC
or DC) for each Power Interface as well as for a device.

    5.2.10. Number Of AC Phases

The standard must provide means for reporting the number of AC phases
   for each Power Interface.

The first is presumably only AC or DC and the second 1-phase or 3-phase.
It seems for implementation purposes these could be combined into a
single value of DC, 1-phase AC, 3-phase AC delta, or 3-phase AC wye.
I assume the framework could specify this and be consistent with the
two requirements.

Biggest Fake Conference in Computer Science

We are researchers from different parts of the world and conducted a study on
the world’s biggest bogus computer science conference WORLDCOMP
( http://sites.google.com/site/worlddump1 ) organized by Prof. Hamid Arabnia
from University of Georgia, USA.

We submitted a fake paper to WORLDCOMP 2011 and again (the same paper
with a modified title) to WORLDCOMP 2012. This paper had numerous
fundamental mistakes. Sample statements from that paper include:

(1). Binary logic is fuzzy logic and vice versa
(2). Pascal developed fuzzy logic
(3). Object oriented languages do not exhibit any polymorphism or inheritance
(4). TCP and IP are synonyms and are part of OSI model
(5). Distributed systems deal with only one computer
(6). Laptop is an example for a super computer
(7). Operating system is an example for computer hardware

Also, our paper did not express any conceptual meaning. However, it
was accepted both the times without any modifications (and without
any reviews) and we were invited to submit the final paper and a
payment of $500+ fee to present the paper. We decided to use the
fee for better purposes than making Prof. Hamid Arabnia (Chairman
of WORLDCOMP) rich. After that, we received few reminders from
WORLDCOMP to pay the fee but we never responded.

We MUST say that you should look at the above website if you have any thoughts
to submit a paper to WORLDCOMP. DBLP and other indexing agencies have stopped
indexing WORLDCOMP’s proceedings since 2011 due to its fakeness. See
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/conf/icai/index.html for of one of the
conferences of WORLDCOMP and notice that there is no listing after 2010. See Section 2 of
http://sites.google.com/site/dumpconf for comments from well-known researchers
about WORLDCOMP.

The status of your WORLDCOMP papers can be changed from scientific
to other (i.e., junk or non-technical) at any time. Better not to have a paper than
having it in WORLDCOMP and spoil the resume and peace of mind forever!

Our study revealed that WORLDCOMP is a money making business,
using University of Georgia mask, for Prof. Hamid Arabnia. He is throwing
out a small chunk of that money (around 20 dollars per paper published
in WORLDCOMP’s proceedings) to his puppet (Mr. Ashu Solo or A.M.G. Solo)
who publicizes WORLDCOMP and also defends it at various forums, using
fake/anonymous names. The puppet uses fake names and defames other conferences
to divert traffic to WORLDCOMP. He also makes anonymous phone calls and tries to
threaten the critiques of WORLDCOMP (See Item 7 of Section 5 of above website).
That is, the puppet does all his best to get a maximum number of papers published
at WORLDCOMP to get more money into his (and Prof. Hamid Arabnia’s) pockets.

Monte Carlo Resort (the venue of WORLDCOMP for more than 10 years, until 2012) has
refused to provide the venue for WORLDCOMP’13 because of the fears of their image
being tarnished due to WORLDCOMP’s fraudulent activities. That is why WORLDCOMP’13
is taking place at a different resort. WORLDCOMP will not be held after 2013.

The draft paper submission deadline is over but still there are no committee
members, no reviewers, and there is no conference Chairman. The only contact
details available on WORLDCOMP’s website is just an email address!

Let us make a direct request to Prof. Hamid arabnia: publish all reviews for
all the papers (after blocking identifiable details) since 2000 conference. Reveal
the names and affiliations of all the reviewers (for each year) and how many
papers each reviewer had reviewed on average. We also request him to look at
the Open Challenge (Section 6) at https://sites.google.com/site/moneycomp1

Sorry for posting to multiple lists. Spreading the word is the only way to stop
this bogus conference. Please forward this message to other mailing lists and people.

We are shocked with Prof. Hamid Arabnia and his puppet’s activities

keyword worldcomp fake for additional links.

Hi Bruce,

Actually, it's too late to change the EMAN requirements at this point in
time.
However, what's possible is a note in the EMAN-FMWK, along the lines of:

EMAN-REQ] mentioned that the standard must provide means for reporting
the nominal voltage range for each Power Interface.
If the nominal voltage is identical for every Power Interfaces on a specific device,
a single object might be reporting the nominal voltage.

I guess the MIB module will have to updated.

Regards, Benoit

Dear all,

While reviewing the EMAN requirements draft, both Stephen and Sean came
up with the same remark:

section 3.2 - not all energy management is about simply using less,
in the case of power harvesting devices, one may need to
preserve energy so that it can be used when communications are
needed (with radios being the most expensive power consumers)

Here is the change that will be done in the next version of the
requirements draft.

OLD:

3.2. Saving Energy Versus Maintaining Service Level

While the general objective of Energy Management is quite clear, the
way to attain that goal is often difficult. In many cases there is
no way of reducing power without the consequence of a potential
service (performance or capacity) degradation. In this case, a
trade-off needs to be made between service level objectives and
energy minimization. In other cases a reduction of power can easily
be achieved while still maintaining sufficient service level
performance, for example, by switching entities to lower Power
States when higher performance is not needed.

NEW:

3.2. Saving Energy Versus Maintaining Service Level

One of the objectives of Energy Management is to reduce the
Energy consumption. While this objective is clear, the
way to attain that goal is often difficult.

However, there is an extra action item for the applicability statement
authors: they should include the different Energy Management use cases.
For example, Sean mentioned:

Is energy management all about actually using less energy? I
would have thought energy management was about informing the management
entity about the power consumption to allow them to take some action,
which just as well might be no action because it's operating in some
normal range. I mean I can run a nuclear reactor right at the minimum
Level of Energy needed or maybe I can be somewhere above that minimum in
a safety zone. Then again, maybe minimal is the lower bar of the safety
bar. Regardless, I'm sticking with my first sentence ;)

Regards, Benoit

	Date : 2013-04-30

Abstract:
This document defines requirements for standards specifications for
energy management. The requirements defined in this document concern
monitoring functions as well as control functions. Monitoring
functions include identification of energy-managed devices and their
components, monitoring of their power states, power inlets, power
outlets, actual power (the instantaneous power, as opposed to the
demand, which is an averaged power), power attributes, received
energy, provided energy, and contained batteries. Control functions
serve for controlling power supply and power state of energy-managed
   devices and their components.
This document does not specify the features that must be implemented
by compliant implementations but rather features that must be
supported by standards for energy management.
