Hi,

I just posted WIMS Counter MIB v2 slides for the PWG Last Call
during the Plenary this Thursday 7 February in the directory:

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/wims/white

in the files:

  wims-countmib20-pwg-last-call-20080207.ppt

  wims-countmib20-pwg-last-call-20080207.pdf

Jerry - you don't have to paste these into the big deck for the
Plenary, if you don't want to - I'll be on the telephone to present.

Bill - stole and revised material from your WIMS WG status slides,
so you should reduce the WG slides to a minimum on Counter MIB.

Cheers,
- Ira

I won't be able to participate on the call, but at first blush the
only thing I see missing is the PSX spec - does it still live, or did
I add it to CUPS for nothing? :)

Hi Michael,

HOORAY - if you have added any part of PSX spec to CUPS, then we have
a "prototype", and we can rapidly take it to PWG Last Call and then formal
vote for PWG Candidate Standard!

We have been delayed waiting for a prototype by one of the BMLinks members
in Japan (who originally requested this coverage for finishing events).

Please, can you describe what you implemented from PSX? Did you do it
in IPP, but not yet in Printer MIB? Of course, devices need to add support
in Printer MIB for it to be useful to CUPS.

Best Regards,
- Ira (co-editor of IPP PSX spec, w/ Craig Whittle, Sharp)

Hi,

Hot off the press!

Especially of interest to Pete Zehler (Xerox, PWG Semantic Model chair).
But relevant to all recent PWG work.

Cheers,

In CUPS, it is up to the printer drivers or backends to provide the
printer-alert* attributes. Some use SNMP lookups while others use
in-band printer commands to generate compatible data. The scheduler
provides the current values in response to Get-Printer-Attributes and
CUPS-Get-Printers requests, and printer-alert* changes also trigger
notifications.

CUPS itself does not respond to SNMP queries and so the only tie we
have to the Printer MIB is when communicating with network printers.
We can't respond to SNMP queries since that will interfere with
existing SNMP services on a system, and in all honesty there is no
clean support for multiple printer queues in the Printer MIB...

Regarding Ira's proposal to make 2.0 == PWG 5100.5 + RFC 2911
optional operations, I humbly suggest we focus on specs that are
more widely implemented, especially if we want 2.0 to be a subset
of 2.1, etc.

Moreover, if we target each version to a particular use case/market,
this layering will make more sense, e.g.:

     2.0 = workgroup printer, 2911 + 5100.1 + 5100.2 + 5101.1
     2.1 = workgroup print server, 2.0 + 3380 + 3381 + 3382 + 3995 +
                                   3996 + 3998 + 5100.7
     2.2 = production print server, 2.1 + 5100.3 + 5100.5 + 5100.6 +
                                    5100.8

Reminder that the April 16-18, F2F meeting (IEEE P2600 meetings on April
14-15) is being held
at a hotel venue and not hosted by a PWG member company. Hence those
attending need
to deal with registration pages, hotel block cut-off dates etc.

The detailed agenda for this meeting will posted soon, but for those
members that plan to attend
the entire session, I encourage you to go ahead and make your hotel
arrangements, registration
etc. ASAP. The cut-off date for the PWG/P2600 hotel block is March 21.

The following link has details on the registration, and a link to the
hotel reservation page specifically
set up for the PWG:

The following information has been provided by Peter Cybuck, CoChair of the
IDS Working Group:

My recommendations for the initial discussion for the new Imaging
Device Security Workgroup are as follows:

1. Identify the overlap of current supported device attributes with
those that apply to HCDs. That is, compare what is currently supported
for devices like desktop PCs and confirm what applies without any
changes to the HCDs.

2. Identify the absolute minimum of new attributes that might have to
be added to address unique issues with HCDs. The list of attributes
required at a minimum for desktops appears to be small so we should
not start with a long list of new items.

3. Document the communication exchange that must be supported by the
HCDs to deploy them in the target networks.

4. Develop a list of alternative or additional optional attributes
that might be useful to propose but justify their addition to a
requirements list.

5. Document any licensing or other formal relationships required with
the target network providers.

6. Solicit input from the network providers on their recommendations
for minimum attribute lists for HCDs.

I am willing to work directly on most of the above.

Comments (and hopefully I'll be able to "attend" next week's telecon):

 > Need to find out what is in CUPS 1.3 and what will be in CUPS 1.4.

CUPS 1.3:

http://svn.easysw.com/public/cups/branches/branch-1.3/doc/help/spec-ipp.html

CUPS 1.4:

     http://svn.easysw.com/public/cups/trunk/doc/help/spec-ipp.html

Right now the only difference between 1.3 and 1.4 is the addition of
a new CUPS-specific "get document" operation.

Presumably polling == ippget/RFC 3996?

Hi Mike,

Yes - notification by polling means ippget.

The lack of standards-track email notification is unfortunate,
because it's the ubiquitous proprietary notification method
supported by the majority of network printers.

Cheers,
- Ira
