Well, I think we need to add at least one required document format. How
that needs to proceed I'll leave up to others.

How do the other members feel about this?

Also, a PWG developed test suite for IPP validation! I like the idea. I
remember talking about this on several occasions. If it's not on our to-do
list, it should be.

Again, we're already changing the ipp-versions-supported and the IPP
header to have 2.x version numbers. Doing a separate spec that is
literally 8 pages of boilerplate and 1 page of real content seems like
a lot of overhead for this!

Keep in mind that CUPS already supports 3 out of the 4 formats I've
proposed. However, I'd argue that we need at least one printer
vendor to implement it as well...

Also, given the mess we have today, I think we really (really!) need
to do interop testing and come up with a standard test suite that
vendors can use to self-validate. (CUPS already has much of this in
its "make check" automated tests to validate its IPP/1.1 conformance)

IPP/2.x with no required document formats is no better than IPP/1.1.

True. The question is, who will upgrade to IPP/2.0 if there is no
compelling reason to do so?

The Telecon scheduled for Monday, August 4th is canceled. I have not
received any proposals for the Rationale, Use Models, and Security
sections, so there is very little to discuss.

Hi Ron,

Sorry about that - I've been in the trenches for the last two weeks and had
no time - I would have had trouble attending Monday anyway.

Cheers,
- Ira

Hi,

Please review via email and at upcoming face-to-face.

Attached and appended below (both in plaintext).

Word usage - Ron - the term 'workgroup' (one word) is ubiquitously
used (and automatically suggested in the Google search bar) for
computer and printing environments. The term 'work group' (two
words) is only correctly used in sociology, etc. Please normalize
in the IPP/2.0 spec (both are now used).

Correct draft filename of IPP/2.0 Profiles spec should be:

  wd-ipp20-2008mmdd.pdf / doc

Due to travel conflicts, I will NOT be calling into the IPP, WIMS, or
MFD WG sessions at the August face-to-face meeting. Good luck.

Cheers,
- Ira

----------------------------------------------------------
3. Requirements

3.1. Rationale for IPP/2.0

The Printer MIB v2 [RFC3805] and Port Monitor MIB [PWG5107.1] define:

    (a) Model of Print Devices

    (b) Operations for Print Devices
        - prtGeneralReset
        - prtConsoleDisable

    (c) Groups of simple attributes for Print Devices
        - prtInputTable --> prtInputName
        - ppmPortTable --> ppmPortServiceNameOrURI

    (d) Conformance requirements for implementations of Printer MIB v2
        and Port Monitor MIB

The IPP/1.1 Model and Semantics [RFC2911] defines:

    (a) Model of Print Services, Print Devices, and Print Jobs

    (b) Operations for Print Services and Print Jobs
        - Pause-Printer
        - Print-Job

    (c) Attributes for Print Services and Print Jobs
        - printer-location
        - job-id

    (d) Conformance requirements for implementations of IPP/1.1

The IPP/1.1 Encoding and Transport [RFC2910] defines:

    (a) Protocol Bindings for IPP/1.1
        - HTTP with optional upgrade to TLS

    (b) Mappings of operations for Print Services and Print Jobs
        Jobs.

    (c) Conformance requirements for implementations of IPP/1.1

Later IETF and PWG standards-track specifications defined 14 IPP/1.1
extensions including:

    (a) New operations
        - Set-Printer-Attributes [RFC3380]
        - Resume-Job [RFC3998]

    (b) New attribute syntaxes
        - collection [RFC3382]

    (c) New objects
        - Subscription [RFC3995]
        - Document [PWG5100.5]

Current enterprise printers often support functionality standardized in
these IPP/1.1 extensions (in a proprietary manner). In order to support
user requirements for advanced printing functionality, there is a clear
need to standardize profiles of these IPP/1.1 extensions for reliable
interoperability and to encourage adoption of IPP-based infrastructure.

3.2. Use Models

See the definitions of Workgroup Printer, Enterprise Printer, and
Production Printer in section 2 Terminology above.

3.2.1. Workgroup Printer

Alice, Bob, and Charlie are graphic artists who share a workgroup
printer down the hall. They all load paper when needed. Alice and Bob
have convinced Charlie that he should load the toner cartridges. But
they do use many paper sizes - they need PWG Media Standardized Names
[PWG5101.1] used in the IPP 'media' attribute. And they print lots of
thumbnails of graphic images - they need standard IPP document formats.

3.2.2. Enterprise Printer

Joe and his colleagues send large documents to an enterprise printer in
a building across the street in a 'glasshouse' with some web servers.
Both Joe and the operator Sue in the glasshouse manage lots of jobs -
they need to hold and release jobs. Joe wants to keep track of his jobs
- he needs to subscribe for job events. Sue is expected to manage
several printers - she needs to enable and disable printers (i.e.,
enable/disable accepting new jobs over input channels).

3.2.3. Production Printer

Louise works in Accounting for a big wholesaler in Kansas City. She
sends variable data jobs (e.g., different user names, user addresses,
and balance owed amounts formatted onto a pre-printed form) to a
production printer in Chicago. Her friend Sam is a night-shift operator
in Chicago. Sam has to make sure that job resources (e.g., the
pre-printed forms for Louise's jobs) are loaded when needed - he often
needs to pause the printer after the current job.

PWG Member

Due to today's interruption of one of the PWG's conference calls, we are
going to be forced to
change the Participant Code (at least) and possibly the dial-in number
althogether. In the future,
any email or calender mention of the conference call number for PWG
activities will include
ONLY the following information.

1. The Dial-In phone number.
2. Possibly a listen-only participant code.

A Full Participant Code that allows those calling into calls to
participate in the call MUST request
the code from the Chair of the group holding the call.

At the Camus f2f, I was the main person who lobbied against use of the
terms Workgroup, Enterprise and Production in association with IPPv2
function sets. Therefore, I have updated the previous draft to reflect my
proposal. I used my initials (HRL) in the draft file name to distinguish
it as a proposal which has not been fully vetted (for ease of reverting if
my thoughts are rejected).

While I think it is appropriate to guide the function set discussions
(and definitions) by perceived workgroup, enterprise and production
scenarios I would like to avoid propagating the association in a
specification because it may be (mis)interepred as a product requirements
document (rather than an interop spec).

Feedback on meeting notes:

1. Just to be clear, the consensus was to remove the
    document-format requirements entirely?

2. WRT XPS, it is patent-encumbered and not covered by any
existing ISO, IETF, PWG, or W3C standards. It may make a
fine high-level PDL, but IMHO it isn't a good fit for a
    required document-format.

3. WRT BMLinkS, this is the first I have heard of it. The
web site indicates modest adoption by Japanese vendors,
and as best as I can tell from the documentation
everything is passed as TIFF files, which are a nightmare
to support thanks to the thousands of possible varients
    you'll run into...

4. CUPS doesn't define required formats, but it does implement
a lot of them. I'm more than happy to write up a spec
    for this, though...

Hi,

XPS - I agree with Mike that it's not appropriate as a required document
format for IPP right now. But it *is* being formally standardized in ECMA
Technical Committee 46:

  http://www.ecma-international.org/memento/TC46.htm

And their current draft 1.2 is much improved from the earlier drafts
- worth watching.

Cheers,
- Ira

Unless the patent stuff is resolved to allow for open source/free
software implementations, I would be opposed to adding it even if
it gets an ECMA stamp of approval.

Hi Mike,

I agree - the PWG hasn't ever standardized encumbered technology
and it shouldn't ever start doing so.

Cheers,
- Ira

It did not come out in the minutes, but I mixed things up a bit at the IPP meeting by suggesting that XPS should be given an enum for the printer MIB (along with asking how the WSD interface entry for the printer MIB was comming). There was no suggestion to standardize XPS for IPP. Indeed, as the minutes indicated, the identification of any required PDL for IPP was considered out of scope under the current project. It was pointed out that there is no problem in identifing XPS as a supported PDL in IPP.

For clarification, since it may not have come out clearly in the minutes, I mixed things up a bit at the IPP meeting by suggesting that XPS should be given an enum for the printer MIB (along with asking how the WSD interface entry for the printer MIB was comming). There was no suggestion to standardize XPS for IPP. Indeed, as the minutes indicated, the identification of any required PDL for IPP was considered out of scope under the current project. It was pointed out that there is no problem in identifing XPS as a supported PDL in IPP.

Hi Ron,

One important clarification to this minutes - there is an IANA Registration
Consideration (the three new values of ipp-versions-supported), as Mike
Sweet has pointed out before.

Cheers,
- Ira

Sorry, my fault - I forgot that keyword values were managed by IANA.
ipp-versions-supported is indeed listed in the IPP registrations at:

     http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipp-registrations

That appears to be the only consideration we need to list.

The original announcement of the availability of the Imaging State and
Counter MIB v2 contains an incorrect link to
the location (and name) of the Candidate Standard document. The link to
the file containing the actual MIB is correct.

The correct links for both are:

(Sharp), Lead Editor Ira McDonald (High North) and with help from many PWG
members as cited in the standard.
