Greetings again. There have been only one comment to date on the new
PIC draft, which is in WG last call, and that was from one of the
co-authors.

The list of changes from -03 to -04 include:

- Introduced optional transport over TCP to avoid packet fragmentation.

- Added another message round for DoS protection.

- Hash computations now include the complete ISAKMP header.

- Better handling of authentication failures.

Please read over the draft, which you can find at
<http://www.vpnc.org/draft-ietf-ipsra-pic>. Please make sure that the
changes do what they say they are supposed to do, and that the
security of the protocol has been maintained. Of course, please send
comments to the list.

(There will be at least one more draft before sending this to the
IESG, since the authors have not done a complete IANA considerations
section, but those changes will not affect any of the protocol.)

Hello all,

I have seen in the WG description that one of the goals of IPSRA WG is
to work closely with Mobile IP WG. I have (briefly) looked through the
ML archive but I wasn't able to find something relative to that topic...
Is there any achieved, ongoing or planned work to develop a
Mobile-IP-aware secure remote access solution?

Many thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Alexis.

I have always been bothered by the PIC terminology:

Authentication server (AS): a server at the organization which can relay
the user's authentication request to the legacy system.
Legacy authentication server (LAS): a RADIUS server, LDAP server and the
like, which the AS uses to authenticate the user.

My recent work in WLAN has shown me a different usage that might be of
value here.

I know that changing wording late in the game is hard, but perhaps it might
give greater flexiblity.

****************************

I have long time been bothered by the term: Legacy authentication server

These things are NOT Legacy.

I am going to recommend we use terms like 802.1x does. I fully realize the
topological differences between PIC and 802.1x, but functionally they do
very similar things.

802.1x has the terms: Authenticator and Authentication Server. The
mapping is:

PICS 802.1x

AS Authenticator
LAS Authentication Server

The SEAMOBY group is also looking at Candidate Access Router discovery for
seamless handoff. They will need to handle VPN's and possible handoff
between disparate address spaces at some point as well.

The tunneling/routing header discussions may be common in some cases, too.

The needs of IPSRA and MIP with respect to longer term enhancements to IPSEC
may also be similar.

Separation of encryption equipment from the endpoints themselves is not
speficied in MIPv6 right now but will certainly have architecural
ramifications away from the current end to end model. It might be best
synergized as part of local mobility management which allows for such a
point to point or subnet to subnet gateway models.

If I were you I would focus on the local mobility management aspects of the
WG to find some initial synergy.

Hope this helps,

Glenn

L2TP group, per my comments in the WG meeting today, since the
L2TP/IPSec integration document has become RFC 3193, please review this
IPSec Secure Remote Access requirements document.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories. This draft is a work item of the IP Security Remote Access
Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Requirements for IPsec Remote Access Scenarios
	Author(s)	: S. Kelly, S. Ramamoorthi
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ipsra-reqmts-04.txt
	Pages : 33
	Date : 28-Aug-01

IPsec offers much promise as a secure remote access mechanism. However,
there are a significant number of remote access scenarios, each having
some shared and some unique requirements. A thorough understanding of
these requirements is necessary in order to effectively evaluate the
suitability of a specific set of mechanisms for any particular remote
access scenario. This document enumerates the requirements for a number
of common remote access scenarios.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ipsra-reqmts-04.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ipsra-reqmts-04.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ipsra-reqmts-04.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
	a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail
readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
