A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IPv6 over Low Power Wide-Area Networks of the IETF.

Title : LPWAN Static Context Header Compression (SCHC) and fragmentation for IPv6 and UDP
        Authors : Ana Minaburo
                          Laurent Toutain
                          Carles Gomez
	Filename : draft-ietf-lpwan-ipv6-static-context-hc-01.txt
	Pages : 29
	Date : 2017-03-01

Abstract:
This document describes a header compression scheme and fragmentation
functionality for IPv6/UDP protocols. These techniques are
especially tailored for LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) networks
and could be extended to other protocol stacks.

The Static Context Header Compression (SCHC) offers a great level of
flexibility when processing the header fields. Static context means
that information stored in the context which, describes field values,
does not change during the packet transmission, avoiding complex
   resynchronization mechanisms, incompatible with LPWAN
characteristics. In most of the cases, IPv6/UDP headers are reduced
   to a small identifier.

This document describes the generic compression/decompression process
and applies it to IPv6/UDP headers. Similar mechanisms for other
protocols such as CoAP will be described in a separate document.
Moreover, this document specifies fragmentation and reassembly
mechanims for SCHC compressed packets exceeding the L2 pdu size and
for the case where the SCHC compression is not possible then the
   IPv6/UDP packet is sent.

Here is my usual eclectic condensed agenda based on the "FINAL" AGENDA
for IETF98. Remember that agenda definitions are never really
"FINAL"... "While this is considered the final agenda for printing,
changes may be made to the agenda up until and during the
meeting. Updates will be reflected on the web versions of the agenda."

Compared to the draft agenda, this has mostly room changes. v6ops
moved around, and tsvarea got extended to an almost four-hour meeting.

All times are CDT (UTC-0500) -- yes, the US will be on DST already for
a couple of weeks, while Europe moves over right on Mar 26th.
(The browser timezone function still is not yet reinstated on
https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/agenda-utc, for those who want to
listen from remote.)

Dear all,

As you have noticed the announcements from the past week, the Design =
Team=E2=80=99s work concerning the IP/UDP SCHC draft is now complete. =
All work regarding this draft happens now on the mailing list.
On the same occasion the chairs have appointed a Shepherd for the =
document - Dominique Barthel. You can start your reviews and remarks and =
post them on the mailing list.

As a reminder, the planning for this document in our charter is quite =
tight. We feel that most of the technical challenges concerning this =
document are cleared (some remain, but there are mostly questions around =
the readability and the examples). The IETF in Chicago will be a major =
milestone for this draft, so please, do read the document and do provide =
your feedback now.

You can find the document at the following address: =
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-lpwan-ipv6-static-context-hc-01 =
<https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-lpwan-ipv6-static-context-hc-01>

This week the Design Team will publish the CoAP SCHC draft, and with =
this its work will be concluded.=20

Best,
Pascal and Alexander

Hi all,

A logistics note and question to the chairs.

- logistics: thanks for the PRs! please do changes to
the xml if you can in those - the txt file is a make
target and not a source

- for the chairs: can you say where you'd like to
see the line drawn after which issues need to be
brought to the list? I think this one is close to
that, but since this is just an informational draft
maybe you're happy enough that stuff like this is
fine without mail to the list.

Thanks,
S.

I think there is a contradiction in this paragraph because you mentioned
in the first sentence that the network infrastructure manages the data
rate of the end-devices individually while in the following sentence you
mentioned that the end-devices are free to send using any available data
rates.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IPv6 over Low Power Wide-Area Networks of the IETF.

Title : LPWAN Static Context Header Compression (SCHC) and fragmentation for IPv6 and UDP
        Authors : Ana Minaburo
                          Laurent Toutain
                          Carles Gomez
	Filename : draft-ietf-lpwan-ipv6-static-context-hc-02.txt
	Pages : 29
	Date : 2017-03-10

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IPv6 over Low Power Wide-Area Networks of the IETF.

Title : LPWAN Static Context Header Compression (SCHC) for CoAP
        Authors : Ana Minaburo
                          Laurent Toutain
	Filename : draft-ietf-lpwan-coap-static-context-hc-01.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2017-03-10

Abstract:
This draft discusses the way SCHC header compression can be applied
to CoAP headers in an LPWAN flow regarding the generated traffic.
CoAP protocol differs from IPv6 and UDP protocols because the CoAP
Header has a flexible header due to variable options. Another
important difference is the asymmetric format in the header
information used in the request and the response packets. This draft
shows that the Client and the Server do not uses the same fields and
how the SCHC header compression can be used.

Dear all:

<chair hat off>

Yesterday at the LPWAN WG meeting in Chicago, we discussed the possibility =
to split the fragmentation piece off the SHCH/IP document - we also discuss=
ed splitting the framework piece but quickly dismissed that, see the minute=
s to be published soon.

Here are some arguments in favor of splitting:
- the fragment piece is a sublayer below IP in order to enable IP, but it i=
s not IP
- the mechanisms involved are completely different, the fragmentation has v=
ery basic rules. Splitting the docs improves the clarity of what is needed =
for what.
- the expectations on the network are different e.g. fragmentation requires=
in-order delivery, IP requires 1280 MTU.
- which relates to the fact that the backend device that handles the fragme=
ntation may be different (e.g. the fragmentation could be done at the NS as=
opposed to SCHC/IP and CoAP that could be run in some MEC or cloud locatio=
n)

And then there are reasons related to the standardization process. Putting =
it all together like we did with RFC 4944 can probably be seen as a mistake=
with the historical perspective that we have now. With the split:
- going through the review process would be streamlined; we have a very con=
strained agenda
- maintenance of the docs for future revision / deprecation would be easier=
, either updating one or the others.

With this in mind, I encourage the split...

<chair hat on>

but would like to hear about reasons not to split before we make a decision=
.

Take care,

Pascal

Dear authors:

Please find some questions and suggestions:

- introduce the assumptions early in the doc (e.g. no reordering in the net=
work)
- there could be a section explain what the tools are, e.g. CFN, ACK, Bitma=
p, before we use them
- can there be multiple fragmented packets in parallel (how so) ?=20
- Can we interleave non fragmented packets?
- discussion on timeouts is probably missing here and there
- discussion on what the modes are could be expressed as a matrix with X =
=3D=3D windowed or not (that's CFN=3D1 or more), and Y =3D=3D type of ackn=
owledgement (none, on-error, always). And in that matrix, it would help to =
figure which modes are available, and then have section to explain the pro/=
con, possible mitigation of the cons and applicability of each mode.

What do you think?

Pascal
