It would be interesting to have a discussion between Dan's draft and
GDOI-SRTP. Any takers? A first step might be for authors to review
each others' drafts.

I would like to add this also to the agenda, but an initial discussion
on the list would help manage the time at the f2f meeting better.

regards,
Lakshminath

It would be interesting to have a discussion between Dan's draft and
GDOI-SRTP. Any takers? A first step might be for authors to review
each others' drafts.

I would like to add this also to the agenda, but an initial discussion
on the list would help manage the time at the f2f meeting better.

regards,
Lakshminath

Hi,

I'm glad to see MSEC meeting in Philadelphia next week. I will not be
there, but will keep an eye on the discussions, especially those about
automated group keying for routing and signalling protocols.

Hope a successful meeting.

Hi Lakshminath,

I'll participate too and I'd like to discuss the latest changes
to the TESLA I-D. IMHO this version can now be considered as stable.
I'll send another email detailing the diffs WRT. the previous version
and the associated motivations in the coming days.
A 10' slot is sufficient.

Cheers,

   Vincent

Hi Lakshminath,

I'll participate too and I'd like to discuss the latest changes
to the TESLA I-D. IMHO this version can now be considered as stable.
I'll send another email detailing the diffs WRT. the previous version
and the associated motivations in the coming days.
A 10' slot is sufficient.

Cheers,

   Vincent

Folks,

I had to change the agenda quite a bit to accommodate a request I missed

Hello,

As promised, here are a few comments about the status of the
new TESLA for ALC/NORM I-D.

The new document:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-msec-tesla-for-alc-norm-04.txt

...and the diff with -03:

General comments:
-----------------

The document is now considered as stable.

The whole specification turns out to be relatively complex,
essentially because:

1- it defines a working mode that is self-sufficient, instead of
relying on several external documents to address for instance
    the bootstraping aspects.
Of course this does not mean that all use-cases must follow
the built-in bootstrap mode: it remains an optional feature.

2- it defines 8(!) different authentication tags.
Besides, the compact formats require additional processing.
Since the sender can transmit a few bits of the "interval
index" only, the receivers need a mechanism to guess the non
    transmitted bits...

3- it specifies how to manage several key chains and to commit
the next one with an in-band mechanism.
Two alternative solutions could be (1) to define a single
key chain, long enough to cover From msec-bounces@ietf.org Sun Mar 9 07:09:29 2008

Hello,

As promised, here are a few comments about the status of the
new TESLA for ALC/NORM I-D.

The new document:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-msec-tesla-for-alc-norm-04.txt

...and the diff with -03:
http://tools.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-ietf-msec-tesla-for-alc-norm-04.txt

Regards,

   Vincent et al.

Two alternative solutions could be (1) to define a single
key chain, long enough to cover the whole session, or (2)
to have several key chains and relying on an external
signaling protocol to securely commit each chain.
Our solution is probably more flexible than alternative 1,
and does not require any external signaling protocol which
can be an asset in some situations. But there is a price
to pay for that (see "3.1.2.2. Using Multiple Key Chains").
However IMHO this complexity remains rather acceptable.

4- it defines an additional "weak" Goup MAC optional scheme
which is an efficient way to deter some attacks.
It does not make the specification significantly more
complex but it needs to be implemented too...

Other opinions are welcome!

Differences between 03 and 04 versions:
---------------------------------------

Changes:
- the bootstrap information message has been significantly changed:
   * the key chain commitment is disclosed instead of a "current key".
     It makes this
   * the signature section now includes a "cryptographic function type"
     e.g. to specify that SHA-1 is used internally;
   * the various fields have been reorganized => 1 more 32 bit word;
   * added a "Single key chain mode" flag.

- added a Signature Cryptographic Function table in the IANA section.

- finished/clarified the specification of the steps performed by a
receiver to authenticate packets ("4.2. Authentication of Received
   Packets").

- added some text on how to initialize some sender parameters:
"3.1.2.3. Values of the n_tx_lastkey and n_tx_newkcc Parameters"
and we moved here some text related to the special cases of session
start and long periods of silence.

- added a requirement that when multiple key chains are used,
the period during which disclosure of the last key of the
previous key chain and the period during which disclosure of
the commitment to the new key chain MUST NOT overlap.

- clarified when a receiver should flush its non authenticated
   packets.

Editorial:
- merge of the previous sections 2 and 3 to ease the reading
   of the doc.
- several text improvements.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for sharing this work with MSEC. The draft is very good for an
-01-. Many thanks for your hard work.

To start off, I should say, we have considered group keying in the
context of TLS in MSEC a long while ago. Before I ramble, I should say
that it has been a while ( we discussed the topic, so my recollection
and especially my terminology may not be precise.

The idea was that TLS can be used to establish the secure channel of
Phase 1 (in lieu of IKE Main Mode/Quick Mode). Phase 2 would then be
similar, irrespective of what protocol was used in Phase 1. Now, I
understand and would make a case for reusing payloads of the protocol
used in Phase 1, in Phase 2 as well. To that end, there will be
differences, but schematically there shouldn't be.

More recently, I was thinking about how to optimize and documented some
of those thoughts in GKDP; there are some security and/or policy
negotiation tradeoffs however. Specifically, one could claim that a
group member may ask to join a group with ID, GID, for which the GCKS or
an equivalent entity would then provide the group security policy, if
the member agrees to the policy, it could then ask for the keys. One
could make an argument to keep the group security policy secret,
although, I would say that there is no real need to keep the policy
secret in most general use cases.

Some comments on your draft (including nits):

On the use of the word DTLS peer: I guess this is one of those
terminology things that we have to go back and forth on with regard to
TLS. TLS itself of course has the notion of client and server; in the
context of SRTP, point-to-point security context establishment, it makes
sense to use the word peer instead of client and server; however, in the
context of group keying, the asymmetric roles are again quite
meaningful. Specifically, group policy and the keys are always sent by
the key server. There is also no negotiation of group policy. To that
end, in Page 10, there is a note about no changes to crypto parameters
and that a new handshake is needed for that. It is plausible that I
don't have the context right, could you explain this please?

Next, I am not sure I understand the notion of new_srtp_key and
your_new_srtp_key. Perhaps some reworking of terminology might be
useful here.

Would a multicast key update be possible with this? If the idea is to
be able to support rekeying at the time of membership changes, that
might scale better.

Would key management for multiple streams be a possibility? Similarly,
would it be possible to offload key management to a separate entity? In
those cases, it might make sense to be able to identity the stream,
session or more generally, the secure group for which the keys are being
transported.

Perhaps it might make sense to call the extension, TLS Key transport
extension to make it as general as possible. Thoughts? Is there any
reason to scope it to DTLS or SRTP?

In Figure 9, I am not sure I understand the symmetry. In each instance
of a secure group, isn't there a single server (let's set aside the
cases of use of subordinate group controllers or redundant servers etc)
with all other entities within the group being clients? I guess the
symmetry is to state that in the use case of a mixer, each entity is a
"sender." If so, I am making a case for making the protocol more generic.

I don't recall the following about TLS. Can the key management session
continue after Finished? I will also check when I have connectivity and
probably respond again.

In Section 6, how effective is transport address matching? More
specifically, how hard is it to spoof the transport address in addition
to using the sender's key? The solution is in effect a poor man's
mechanism for source authentication. I am just curious contextually how
powerful it is.

All, I invite you to participate in this discussion. I am going to ask
Dan to present a comparative analysis or summarize the shortcuts that he
has thought of compared to GDOI-SRTP instead of a tutorial presentation.
Needless to say, please read the draft prior to the meeting. Please
don't expect a tutorial at the meeting. Unfortunately, we don't have
time for a tutorial and to make progress.

thanks,
Lakshminath

Unfortunately, we don't have
time for a tutorial and to make progress.

thanks,
Lakshminath

We spent 1 hour on Wednesday discussing new work items.

There are requirements related to a signaling protocol (RSVP) and
routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, NLS) which point to the need for group
key management protocols. There are indications that the work needs to
happen in MSEC; although there is caution from the TSV ADs that the
requirements do not imply that a particular protocol can be adopted as a
MSEC work item.

The direction would have been to extend GDOI to satisfy these
requirements. As it stands now, we see no urgency for that work to
happen. It appears that may be a longer term goal and so we agreed to
proceed with the current GDOI extensions work (unrelated to the new
requirements, and related to hash algorithm agility and other minor
changes based on implementation experience).

The authors are advised to continue the work as individual work.

Next, Dan Wing presented his SRTP key transport work which works over
DTLS. MSEC has a work item on group keying for SRTP, GDOI-SRTP. Sheela
Rowles compared to the two approaches and after some discussion the
conclusion was to pursue optimization of GDOI-SRTP for large groups and
DTLS-SRTP-Key transport for small groups. As a side note, Dan was asked
to study if there are indeed difficulties in using the TLS-based
solution for large groups.

TESLA-for-alc-norm is ready for WGLC.

There was also a presentation on extending MIKEY to support mode
negotiation.

regards,
Lakshminath
