Bill,
Don't we have to compare the metric preference first before we compare
the metrics. Since R1 has a RPT bit set in the metric preference for
the assert message it advertises - so R1 should be the winner.

I guess it's not quite clear in the current spec, but the lower Assert
values are better, so RPT bit clear beats RPT bit set.

Questions and Answers

What is Herbal V?

Herbal V is a proprietary blend that was specifically
developed as a safe alternative for men who prefer
an all-natural approach to address impotence and boost
sexual performance. This amazing formula first became
popular with Hollywood insiders and the wealthy elite.
They were maximizing their sex lives, long before it
was available to the general public.

How does Herbal V work?

Developed by a team whose goal was to create the perfect
all-natural aphrodisiac. Herbal V is the result of that
remarkable effort. The Herbal V formula contains a precise
blend of cutting edge pro-sexual nutrients from around
the world that provide nutritional support, making it
possible for a man to have a pleasurable sexual experience.

What can Herbal V do for me?

Herbal V helps support male sexual function and
pleasure in a safe and natural manner. Simply put,
it can make your sex life incredible.

Is Herbal V Safe?

One of the great things about Herbal V is that it is
not a drug. It is an incredible herbal dietary supplement
that provides nutritional support for male sexual function
and pleasure. One of the most comforting features of
Herbal V is that you never have to worry about safety.

Herbal V: Safe - Natural - Exciting

Many have speculated that because Herbal V is so
popular with men, it must contain prescription drugs
or chemical components. Herbal V does not contain any
elements or traces of any prescription drug. Herbal V
is made using the world's most technologically advanced
state-of-the-art cold processing equipment to ensure
maximum purity. Herbal V has been independently analyzed
by the nation's premier testing facility to ensure purity,
quality and to end the rumors that, because it is so
popular, it must somehow be chemical. It is not.
Herbal V is natural - just as it says on the label.
Herbal V is simply fantastic!

Herbal V: Ingredients

Yohimbe, saw palmetto, avena sativa, androstenedione,
guarana, taurine, siberian ginseng, tribulus terrestris.
Tribulus Terrestis is certified to enhanced testosterone
levels by increasing Luteinzing hormone (LH) levels.
Androstenedione which is a precursor to testosterone
unlocks bound testosterone and makes it biologically
active again quickly. This means a dramatic surge in
desire. Avena Sativa Stimulates the neurotransmitter
pleasure centers to maximum capacity. This greatly
intensifies pleasure.

Just listen to what Herbal V has done for the sex lives
of people like you!

I have a couple of questions regarding PIM-DVMRP interop

Dvmrp(R1) ---- DVMRP(R2)----MBR(R3)----PIM(R4)----RP(R5)---PIM(R6) ---
(Source)

Let's us say that the receiver is connected to the DVMRP router (R2). Data
from the source falls all the way to the receiver on DVMRP router (R2).
Now the receiver on DVMRP router (R2) goes away. We send a prune all the
way upstream towards the source. Now we keep the prune entry on DVMRP
router (R2) for DVMRP prune lifetime and all routers in the PIM domain have
a (S,G) prune entry which will expire in a while (say 210 seconds). Now we
don't
have an (S,G) prune entry at the MBR. If the receiver in the DVMRP domain
(say
DVMRP router R1) comes back then how do we receive packets from the source -
if for during this duration the packets are going from source to RP during
all this while.

- Should (S,G) prune entry on RP be refreshed with a (*,*,RP) join from the
MBR. If that happens data will be flowing all the way between RP and MBR
every time a (*,*,RP) join is received by RP.

- Or should (S,G) prune entries be maintained all the way between MBR and RP
so that the (S,G) join can be initiated. In this case when do we delete
the (S,G) prune entry on all routers between MBR and RP. In this case if the
receiver comes on DVMRP router R1 when we are in the pruned state then how
we
do receive traffic on DVMRP router R1 since DVMRP router r1 does not have
any
state information about (S,G) entry.

- Also what is the significance of (*,*,RP) prune message and when do we
send
(*,*,RP) prune.

Thanks.
Sundeep

Hi,

I think this is what you're looking for. I'm not certain if the version of PimD-DM that's up there has the fixes for Linux 2.4 or not, but it should do.

http://www.antc.uoregon.edu/PIMDM/pimd-dense.html

ObRant: Personally, I'd like to see both PimD-SM and PimD-DM mirrored over on Sourceforge. MrouteD has died of a surfeit of neglect, GateD has been sold into slavery, and there aren't many other open multicast routers. (AFAIK, -none at all- that do PIM of any flavour.) It's great that the PIM specs are being clarified and defined. Lousy specs, lousy result. But the specs still need to be coded, if they're going to be adopted. No insult to any coders on this list. It's NOT a case of the "not good enoughs". It's more a case of "everyone else is shooting themselves in the foot with tactical nuclear bazookas, we don't need to do the same."

Apologies for that rant. Now back to your regular scheduled discussions. :)

PIM-SM certainly works under KAME's IPv6 implementation, which is open.
Have run it here happily with IPv6 vic/rat tools and our own multicast
audio applications, and I understand it's on by default on the WIDE
network.

There's a PIM implementation ongoing for inclusion in Zebra, if IPv4 is
your thing ;-)

My version of Linux kernel is 2.2.12-20. I confirm i enabled PIMv2.(if not, the compiling could not succeed)

I tried stand-alone version of pimdd for DM (http://antc.uoregon.edu/GATED/)on linux. The big problem was that it could not be compiled successfully. It prompted that it need some "include" files for LINUX.

The current thing is that I can't choose the version of PIMD related to GateD5.0. We can't get the GateD5.0. We only have GateD3.6(public Release)

A new version of the PIM-SM spec is available from:
  http://www.aciri.org/mjh/draft-ietf-pim-sm-v2-new-01.ps
and
  http://www.aciri.org/mjh/draft-ietf-pim-sm-v2-new-01.txt

We'd recommend the PostScript version if you're going to print it -
it's much more readable.

It was submitted to the I-D editor on Friday, so should appear in the
I-D archives in due course.

The main changes from the previous version are:

 - added (*,*,RP) state, state machines, and rules.

 - added a section clarifying the subset needed for PIM-SSM-only
   routers.

 - added a lot more explanation of some of the state machines

In addition there have been a large number of corrections and
clarifications - please see the changebars for these. Our thanks in
particular go to John Zwiebel for his very detailed comments on the
first version of this spec.

As always, more comments and feedback would be much appreciated!

	Author(s)	: M. Handley, I. Kouvelas, L. Vicisano
	Filename	: draft-ietf-pim-bidir-01.txt

This document discusses Bi-directional PIM, a variant of PIM
Sparse-Mode [9] that builds bi-directional shared trees
connecting multicast sources and receivers. Bi-directional
trees are built using a fail-safe Designated Forwarder (DF)
election mechanism operating on each link of a multicast
topology.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Protocol Independent Multicast Working Group of the IETF.

Title : State Refresh in PIM-DM
	Author(s)	: D. Farinacci, I. Kouvelas, K. Windisch
	Filename	: draft-ietf-pim-refresh-02.txt
	Pages : 10
	Date : 28-Nov-00

This proposal extends the PIM-DM [1] protocol specification by intro-
ducing the PIM State-Refresh control message.
When an (S,G) entry is created in a router for a directly connected
source, if the interface directly connected to the source is the
incoming interface for the entry, a new timer is started: the State-
Refresh-Timer [SRT(S,G)]. The State-Refresh-Timer controls periodic
transmission of the PIM State-Refresh message, which is propagated
hop-by-hop down the (S,G) RPF tree. When received by a router on the
RPF interface, the State-Refresh message causes existing prune state
to be refreshed.
Addition of this heartbeat message solves many of the current prob-
lems with PIM-DM. It prevents the periodic timeout of prune state in
routers, greatly reducing the re-flooding of multicast traffic down
the pruned branches that expire periodically. It also causes topology
changes to be realised quicker than the traditional 3 minute timeout.

Hi Vinodkumar,

first of all, this question belongs to the pim mailing list,
so I am forwarding to it also.

Basically your question on the role of the DR is valid if
you don't have any downstream router. If there is a downstream
router, that router can send a join/prune toward its RPF neighbor
which could be different from that of the DR, so assert could happen
when data comes down both the RPF router and the DR router.

You also need Asserts to resolve a situation where 2 upstream routers on
the same LAN (one leading to the RP and another leading to the
source) when switching from the shared *,G tree to the SPT S,G tree

There is a plan to rewrite the dense-mode spec in the same style
as the new Sparse and Bidir specs as soon as the interested people
get some time.

Hi,
I have the following question on assert behaviour on a multi access lan.
Consider the scenario:

		Src
		|
           R1 (RP)
		|
	--------------
	R2 R3
	| |
	--------------
	       |
	--------------------------
	| | |
	R4 R5 R6
	| | |
	Rcv1 Rcv2 Rcv3

R1- RP and also connected to Src, Receivers connected to R4, R5
R4 picks R2 as upstream and R5/R6 pick R3 as upstream to Src/RP
R2 is elected as the assert winner on multiaccess LAN for forwarding pkts
from Src.
When receivers(Rcv1 & Rcv2) connected to R4 and R5 leave, R2 prunes off the
interface.
When a new receiver(Rcv3) comes up on R6 , we initiate a (*G) join to R3.
But R3 is the assert loser and an asserted vif has higher precendence over a
joined vif. How do packets get routed to Rcvr3?

Thanks,
- Srilakshmi

Referring to figure 11 in section 4.5.2 of draft-ietf-pim-v2-new-01.ps,
(or the table below it if you're looking at the .txt version), receiving a
(*,G) Join moves the router from "I am Assert Loser" state to "No Info"
state, allowing the interface to be placed back in the computed interface
list and then causing the Assert process to reoccur if necessary.

RFC2362 section 3.2.2/join/1/2 also says that when you get a (*,G) join
you immediately add the interface.

  Bill

Then your subnet is misconfigured and may not work properly.
PIM routers should include the Holdtime option in Hellos when
their Hello_Period is different than the default in the spec,
in order to prevent such misconfigurations.

>Is it mandatory that Hello packets carry the Holdtime?

Not if it is the default.

>Do PIM implementations ignore Hello packets with no Holdtime?

Good question; this is a place to check compatability between old
spec and new (since the old spec says you copy the hold time from
the option and doesn't say what to do if it's not there).
