Title : Population Count Extensions to PIM
	Author(s) : Dino Farinacci
                          Greg Shepherd

	Pages : 20
	Date : 2012-01-05

This specification defines a method for providing multicast
distribution-tree accounting data. Simple extensions to the PIM
protocol allow a rough approximation of tree-based data in a scalable
   fashion.

Hi ,

I have doubt in PIM-SM Registration State machine.

As per the state machine, there is a delay of random (30,90)seconds from on=
e register packet to another. This is done to reduce the frequent register =
packets at the rate of wire speed.

But if there is a leave and then a join happens at RP immediately, the mca=
st data flow gets delayed to a maximum of 90 seconds.

There occurs a two kind of behavior.

1. When Join happens at the first time --> Here mcast data flows imm=
ediately

2. When Join happens after a Leave -->Here it takes delay of random =
(30, 90) seconds. Is this behavior acceptable?
How can we correct the second behavior , So that mcast data flows immediate=
ly after Join packet received by RP.?

Thanks and Regards,
Sundara Moorthy M

Sundara,
CouldRegister --> TRUE event of Register FSM in Section 4.4.1 implies that
the first-hop DR should register encapsulate all packets from a directly
connected source till the RP responds with a "Register-Stop". Of course,
implementations can optimize this to avoid encapsulation overhead for every
packet. In the case when there are no receivers at the RP ( (*,G)inherited
olist is NULL), the RP would respond with a Register-Stop immediately but
would create and maintain (S,G) state which is refreshed by Null Registers.
Later, when a receiver joins the RP tree, inheritance from (*,G) to (S,G)
state triggers a (S,G) Join which would bring multicast packets down to the
RP and onto the RP tree. So the join latency for the late receiver is
definitely not in the order of 30 to 90 seconds.

Regards,
-Rishabh

The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'A Reliable Transport Mechanism for PIM'
  (draft-ietf-pim-port-09.txt) as an Experimental RFC

This document is the product of the Protocol Independent Multicast
Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Adrian Farrel and Stewart Bryant.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-pim-port/

Technical Summary

This document creates a simple incremental mechanism to provide
reliable PIM message delivery in PIM version 2 for use with PIM
Sparse-Mode (including Source-Specific Multicast) and Bidirectional
   PIM.

The reliable transport mechanism will be used for Join-Prune message
transmission only, and can use either TCP or SCTP as the transport
   protocol.

Working Group Summary

WG progress was smooth with a large number of comments from
many people helping to form the document.

Document Quality

This is an Experimental document. At least one implementation
   exists.

Personnel

Mike McBride (mcbride@cisco.com) is the Document Shepherd.
Adrian Farrel (adrian@olddog.co.uk) is the Responsible AD

RFC Editor Note

End of 3.1:

OLD:
TCP Connection ID AFI: The AFI value to describe the address-family
of the address of the TCP Connection ID field. When this field is
0, a mechanism outside the scope of this document is used to
obtain the addresses used to establish the TCP connection.

NEW:
TCP Connection ID AFI: The AFI value to describe the address-family
of the address of the TCP Connection ID field. Note that this
value does not need to match the address-family of the PIM Hello
message that carries it. When this field is 0, a mechanism
outside the scope of this document is used to obtain the
addresses used to establish the TCP connection.

End of 3.2:

OLD:
SCTP Connection ID AFI: The AFI value to describe the address-
family of the address of the SCTP Connection ID field. When this
field is 0, a mechanism outside the scope of this document is used
to obtain the addresses used to establish the SCTP connection.

NEW:
SCTP Connection ID AFI: The AFI value to describe the address-
family of the address of the SCTP Connection ID field. Note that
this value does not need to match the address-family of the PIM
Hello message that carries it. When this field is 0, a mechanism
outside the scope of this document is used to obtain the
addresses used to establish the SCTP connection.

The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'A Reliable Transport Mechanism for PIM'
  (draft-ietf-pim-port-09.txt) as an Experimental RFC

This document is the product of the Protocol Independent Multicast
Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Adrian Farrel and Stewart Bryant.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-pim-port/

Technical Summary

This document creates a simple incremental mechanism to provide
reliable PIM message delivery in PIM version 2 for use with PIM
Sparse-Mode (including Source-Specific Multicast) and Bidirectional
   PIM.

The reliable transport mechanism will be used for Join-Prune message
transmission only, and can use either TCP or SCTP as the transport
   protocol.

Working Group Summary

WG progress was smooth with a large number of comments from
many people helping to form the document.

Document Quality

This is an Experimental document. At least one implementation
   exists.

Personnel

Mike McBride (mmcbride7@gmail.com) is the Document Shepherd.

During our wg meeting in Taipei, the wg voted 7-0 to progress this
draft to the IESG as an experimental RFC. The wglc response was fairly
weak, and included one objection, therefore I hesitated progressing
the draft. However, given the response in the room, coupled with the
wglc support, it appears we have consensus.

Since Stig is an author, I will forward this document to the Routing
ADs and will act as the document Shepherd. Please speak up if you have
any concerns/questions with these actions.

thanks,
mike

No feedback on the list during the wglc. But we had a strong response
during the pim meeting Taipei. Therefore I'm initiating an additional
one week wglc. If you are opposed to wg adoption of this draft please
speak up. Otherwise we will adopt.

thanks,
mike

In the Taipei pim wg mtg, 4 were in favor and 0 against moving
draft-ietf-pim-ecmp-01 to wglc. We plan to initiate a wglc for this
draft on Monday February 6th. Please speak up, before the 6th, if you
feel it is not ready for wglc.

Technically, I have no issues with this draft. There are some English
errors, a list of which I have sent to the authors directly.

The document is ready for wglc, although I would prefer to see the
errors corrected in another revision before wglc is called.
