Yes, you need to indicate the source of the base class in the IMPORT clause.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Resource Allocation Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Framework Policy Information Base
	Author(s)	: M. Fine, K. McCloghrie, J. Seligson,
                          K. Chan, S. Hahn, R. Sahita, A. Smith,
                          F. Reichmeyer
	Filename	: draft-ietf-rap-frameworkpib-06.txt
	Pages : 59
	Date : 14-Nov-01

[SPPI] describes a structure for specifying policy information that
can then be transmitted to a network device for the purpose of
configuring policy at that device. The model underlying this
structure is one of well-defined provisioning classes and instances
of these classes residing in a virtual information store called the
Policy Information Base (PIB).

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rap-frameworkpib-06.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-rap-frameworkpib-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rap-frameworkpib-06.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

The scope of the document is to 'define a set of PRCs and textual
conventions that are common to all clients...'. Having a table that
determines a target via the ifIndex limits the applicability of the
framework pib across client types.

Shouldn't the frwkIfRoleComboTable table be more generic? The frwk PIB could
define PRCs that constitute a base on which each client type is able to
specify its particular target, be it an IfIndex+direction on a router or
slotX on a toaster.

Pedro,

The frwkIfRoleCombo table is only used to associate
ifIndices on network devices with role-combinations.
The actual policy targetting table would be in a domain-specific
PIB (for example the qosDataPathTable in the diffserv PIB).

Note that in a hypothetical toaster PIB you can always
define your own targetting table that contains SlotX,
role-combination, and you would'nt use the ifRoleComboTable
since in that case you would'nt need that association.

Ravi

[SPPI] describes a structure for specifying policy information that
can then be transmitted to a network device for the purpose of
configuring policy at that device. The model underlying this
structure is one of well-defined provisioning classes and instances
of these classes residing in a virtual information store called the
Policy Information Base (PIB).

The frwkIfRoleCombo table is actually used to associate indices with
role-combos and caps name. But that's beside the point.
You're saying that for devices (e.g. Junipers which use names to identify
its interfaces) that do not use IfIndices then one would not use this table
to configure them. This is an argument against having such a table at
framework level.
I'm saying this PIB is supposed to be the common ground.
I'm proposing that the frwkIfRoleCombo table have an index but not in the
sense of a MIB IfIndex (as the doc says in pg 3 'The SNMP experience with
ifIndex has proved this to be a difficult task'). Why not a Prid to a
generic target? Then in the domain-specific PIB you define a table that
determines what those prids actually represent.

So at framework level:

FrwkTargetRoleComboEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
           frwkTargetRoleComboPrid InstanceId,
           frwkTargetRoleComboTarget Prid,
           frwkTargetRoleComboRoles RoleCombination,
           frwkTargetRoleComboCapSetName SnmpAdminString
   }

frwkTargetRoleComboTarget OBJECT-TYPE
       SYNTAX Prid
       STATUS current
       DESCRIPTION
"The complete PRC OID and instance identifier specifying the
           target PRC instance."

In the domain specific pib, for instance DiffServ PIB, strictly following
the Informal model:

qosTargetTable OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX SEQUENCE OF QosTargetEntry
    PIB-ACCESS notify
    STATUS current
    DESCRIPTION
"This table specifies targets on the device"

qosTargetEntry OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX QosTargetEntry
    STATUS current
    DESCRIPTION
"An instance of this class describes a target
        on the device."

QosTargetEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
    qosTargetPrid InstanceId,
    qosTargetName Unsigned32,
    qosTargetDirection IfDirection
   }

qosTargetPrid OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX InstanceId
    STATUS current
    DESCRIPTION
"An arbitrary integer index that uniquely identifies a
        instance of the class."

qosTargetName OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX SnmpAdminString
    STATUS current
    DESCRIPTION
"The name or label for the physical interface
        (e.g. 'FastEthernet3/0')."

qosTargetDirection OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX IfDirection
    STATUS current
    DESCRIPTION
        "Specifies the target direction"

The focus here is on the framework pib, so the qosTargetTable is a rough
example.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Resource Allocation Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : RSVP Policy Control Criteria PIB
	Author(s)	: D. Rawlins et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-rap-rsvppcc-pib-00.txt
	Pages : 32
	Date : 16-Nov-01

This draft describes the use of COPS-PR for support of a PDP
provisioning a PEP with RSVP policy control criteria and defines a
RSVP policy control criteria PIB for this purpose. The RSVPCC-PIB
described in the document is provided for definition of policies that
are currently defined by the outsourcing model [2749]. It is designed
to be scalable and flexible as well as extensible for accommodating
future policy criteria

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username

In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rap-rsvppcc-pib-00.txt".

Hi,
This is a query with reference to ID on framework PIB.
From the document, I could not understand how PDP & PEP
exchange PIB incarnation table details.

Specifically, What can be the name of "frwkPibIncarnationName"
attribute. Is it the responsibility of PDP to fill this
attribute?

For your reference, structure of FrwkPibIncarnationEntry
is given below.

  FrwkPibIncarnationEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
           frwkPibIncarnationPrid InstanceId,
           frwkPibIncarnationName SnmpAdminString,

Krishna,

The frwkPibIncarnationName identifies the PDP that provided the PIB instance
refered to by the frwkPibIncarnationId. It can be say 'Primary Manager', or
'Manager X' and/or an ip address or whatever, in your system, *uniquely*
identifies each PDP.
It is the responsibility of the PDP to populate the entry, it's effectively
part of the decision.

IHTH,
Pedro

Hello!

I'm extremely happy with the new mechanisms in the
frameworkpib - incremental request state updates,
multiple active contexts, references between context -
great!

I have one small question regarding the FrwkErrorEntry
Prc: Why is the instance causing the error reported in
two sepeparate fields:
           frwkErrorPrc PrcIdentifier,
           frwkErrorInstance InstanceId
Unless there is a benefit to the split, I would suggest
to replace these two fields with one:
           frwkErrorInstance Prid

Martin.

This was done so that the frwkError PRC
could be used to specify error conditions
that apply not only to PRC instances but
to PRCs also. (for example COPS-PR error
code unknownPrc(9))

Hi Pedro,
It is now clear for me that it is PDP's responsibility
to set frwkPibIncarnationName. This will work well incase of
single PDP. But, how can PEP get managed by multiple PDP's and
still maintain uniqueness of frwkPibIncarnationName + frwkPibIncarnationId.

To summarize:
1. Is there an assumption that, multiple PDPs must belong to a single
administrative domain?
In such case there is no conflict in maintaining unique PDP names.

2. Is it true that, At any point of time a PEP gets managed by one and only
one PDP (For a specific client type)(Even if multiple PDPs are under
   single administrative domain).

Thanks
Krishna

Multiple PDPs may manage a PEP but not concurrently. The PEP can only make
requests to one and only one PDP at a given time.
There is also the scenario where the PEP has a local PDP. In this case, you
may actually have two entities concurrently providing decisions to the PEP.
Note that the PEP must relay all local decisions to the remote PDP, as it is
*the authoritative source* of decisions (LPDPDecision).

cheers,
Pedro

1. A PDP must be within the administrative domain of a PEP in order to
*directly* manage that PEP. The assumption is that under an administrative
domain the PDPs administer, in a coordinated fashion, a common and
consistent set of policies. If policies come from outside a given domain,
then there will most likely have to be some form of policy negotiation
between inter-domain PDPs.

2.Yes. Good point, I forgot to mention that it's per client type in my
previous message to Abdul.

Hi Pedro,
It is now clear for me that it is PDP's responsibility
to set frwkPibIncarnationName.

Thanks
Krishna

Is it then right to say that a PDP can manage more than one Incarnation and
when a PEP contact a PDP for provisioning the PDP can set the required
incarnation (among those it manages) as active and automatically the
incarnations created by other PDPs as well as other incarnations created by
this PDP will become inactive.

Pedro

Hello Pedro,

But can multiple PDPs manage a PEP at the same time?
Also to make a particular incarnation active, i think the PDP only has to
make the decision. In this case how is the activation of incarnations
co-ordinated among different PDPs given the fact that only one incarnation
can be active at the same time.

Malick

Please note my previous message on administrative domains, in response to
Krishna.
I should add that the PEP is responsible for ensuring that there is only one
active pib instance, per client type.

Multiple PDPs may manage a PEP but not concurrently. The PEP can only make
requests to one and only one PDP at a given time.
There is also the scenario where the PEP has a local PDP. In this case, you
may actually have two entities concurrently providing decisions to the PEP.
Note that the PEP must relay all local decisions to the remote PDP, as it is
*the authoritative source* of decisions (LPDPDecision).

cheers,

IHTH,
Pedro

Hi,
This is a query with reference to ID on framework PIB.
>From the document, I could not understand how PDP & PEP
exchange PIB incarnation table details.

Specifically, What can be the name of "frwkPibIncarnationName"
attribute. Is it the responsibility of PDP to fill this
attribute?

For your reference, structure of FrwkPibIncarnationEntry
is given below.

  FrwkPibIncarnationEntry ::= SEQUENCE

           frwkPibIncarnationPrid InstanceId,
           frwkPibIncarnationName SnmpAdminString,
           frwkPibIncarnationId OCTET STRING,
           frwkPibIncarnationLongevity Unsigned32,
           frwkPibIncarnationTtl Unsigned32,
           frwkPibIncarnationActive TruthValue
   }

A given interface may have capabilities that cross more than one capability
set. For instance, in DiffServ it is common for an iface to have different
capabilities in each direction and these may be represented in distinct
capability sets.
How can this be captured in the frwkIfRoleComboTable?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : COPS Usage for SLS negotiation (COPS-SLS)
	Author(s)	: T. Nguyen et al.
	Filename	: draft-nguyen-rap-cops-sls-01.txt
	Pages : 20
	Date : 27-Nov-01

This document describes the use of the Common Open Policy Service
(COPS) protocol for supporting Service Level Specification (SLS)
negotiation. The [SLS-FRW-TEQ] document has presented the need of a
Service Level Specification (SLS). Different works [SLS-TEQ], [SLS-
AQU], [SLS-INTER] have defined some SLSs for CPE-PE interface and
inter-domain QoS negotiation. The COPS protocol [COPS] has been
defined by the IETF Resource Allocation Protocol (RAP) WG [RAP] and
will be used in this memo to communicate SLS information from the
client to the network provider.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-nguyen-rap-cops-sls-01.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-nguyen-rap-cops-sls-01.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-nguyen-rap-cops-sls-01.txt".

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Resource Allocation Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Session Authorization for RSVP
	Author(s)	: L. Hamer, B. Kosinski, M. Broda, B. Gage, H. Shieh
	Filename	: draft-ietf-rap-rsvp-authsession-01.txt
	Pages : 15
	Date : 28-Nov-01

This document describes the representation of session authorization
information in the POLICY_DATA object [POL-EXT] for supporting
policy-based per-session authorization and admission control in
RSVP. The goal of session authorization is to allow the exchange
of information between network elements in order to authorize the
use of resources for a service and to co-ordinate actions between
the signaling and transport planes. This document describes how a
process on a system authorizes the reservation of resources by a
host and then provides that host with a session authorization
policy element which can be inserted into the RSVP PATH message to
facilitate proper and secure reservation of those resources within
the network. We describe the encoding of media authorization
information as RSVP policy elements and provide details relating to
operations, processing rules and error scenarios.

feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on

Title : Framework for session set-up with media authorization

Establishing multimedia streams must take into account requirements
for end-to-end QoS, authorization of network resource usage and
accurate accounting for resources used. During session set up,
policies may be enforced to ensure that the media streams being
requested lie within the bounds of the service profile established
for the requesting host. Similarly, when a host requests resources
to provide a certain QoS for a packet flow, policies may be enforced
to ensure that the required resources lie within the bounds of the
resource profile established for the requesting host.
