A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Resource Allocation Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Framework of COPS-PR Policy Usage Feedback
	Author(s)	: D. Rawlins, A. Kulkarni
	Filename	: draft-ietf-rap-feedback-frwk-01.txt
	Pages		: 7
	Date		: 30-Nov-01

Common Open Policy Services Protocol [COPS], RFC 2748, defined the
capability of reporting information to the PDP. The types of
report information are success, failure and accounting of an
installed state. This document focuses on the accounting report
type and the necessary framework for the monitoring and reporting
of usage feedback for an installed state.

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to

type "cd internet-drafts" and then

	Filename	: draft-ietf-rap-feedback-fr-pib-01.txt
	Pages		: 27
	Date		: 30-Nov-01

Currently there are no policy classes defined for the PEP to convey
provisioned policy usage feedback to the PDP. The purpose of this
document is to define the policy usage feedback framework PIB that
specifies the policy classes common for COPS feedback reports. The
basic operation and objects for reporting usage information are
defined in [COPS]. A specific clientSI feedback object named REPORT
is defined in [COPS-PR]. A framework for approaching solicited and
periodic usage feedback is described in [COPS-FEED-FRWK].

Pedro,

Regarding the issues, like you proposed, we can
define a base frwkRoleCombo table containing the
basic RoleCombination and IfCapSetName attributes;
and an extension (the frwkIfRoleCombo table) which
contains the IfIndex, IfDirection attributes.

This addresses both issues of having a base rolecombo
table to form other extensions of and having the
IfDirection in its extension the frwkIfRoleCombo table
which allows different capability sets in different
directions to be defined. Does that sound satisfactory?

Ravi

Ravi,

Yes that sounds great, it goes towards the generic nature of the frwk PIB.

Although I would expect to see the extended tables in the client type PIB
and not in the frwk PIB.
Unless, of course, there are different PIBs defs that need that construct
(e.g. Feedback PIB) and so one could make a case for placing the table in
the frwk PIB. And the frwkIfRoleCombo table certainly falls in that lot...so
no worries.

cheers,
Pedro

Pedro,

Regarding the issues, like you proposed, we can
define a base frwkRoleCombo table containing the
basic RoleCombination and IfCapSetName attributes;
and an extension (the frwkIfRoleCombo table) which
contains the IfIndex, IfDirection attributes.

This addresses both issues of having a base rolecombo
table to form other extensions of and having the
IfDirection in its extension the frwkIfRoleCombo table
which allows different capability sets in different
directions to be defined. Does that sound satisfactory?

Ravi

Given that last call period is over I presume there was consensus on a few
issues raised recently concerning the frwkIfRoleCombo table. Could you
please provide the resolutions?

Hello all,

After reading the draft-ietf-rap-frameworkpib-06.txt, I have some
questions necessary to clarify my comprehension. Thank you very much if
someone can answer to my question, even some brief sentences:

1) Section 2.2 : I understand that the Role Combination assignment is
the responsibility of the PDP. First of all, the PEP sends to the PDP
information about all its physical interfaces and their capabilities
with the Role Combination "null". After that, the PDP sends a dicision
to assign Role Combination to each physical interface of the device.
These Role Combinations will be used later for device configuration.

So far, I have thought that Role Combination is assigned with each
interface by hand at the device, it is not the responsibility of the
PDP. Then, the PEP will send to the PDP all Role Combinations it has,
not send information about all physical interfaces it has.

Is it a new point in version 06? Anyway, I found that logical to let the
PDP make this binding. I agree with Pedro that the class RoleComboEntry
should be generic.

Thank you.
MT

To All:

Here is our (Ravi, Pedro and My) thinkings:
We would change the Framework PIB to:

frwkRoleComboEntry
    PIB-INDEX { frwkRoleComboPrid }
    UNIQUENESS {}
    ::= { frwkRoleComboTable 1 }
FrwkRoleComboEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
    frwkRoleComboPrid InstanceId,
    frwkRoleComboRoles RoleCombination,
    frwkRoleComboCapSetName SnmpAdminString
    }

frwkIfRoleComboEntry
    EXTENDS { frwkRoleComboEntry }
    UNIQUENESS { frwkIfRoleComboIfIndex,
                            frwkRoleComboCapSetName }
    ::= { frwkIfRoleComboTable 1 }
FrwkIfRoleComboEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
    frwkIfRoleComboIfIndex InterfaceIndex
    }

And, in the future, someone can define a new PRC, like:

frwkSlotRoleComboEntry
    EXTENDS { frwkRoleComboEntry }
    UNIQUENESS { frwkSlotRoleComboSlotNumber,
                         frwkRoleComboCapSetName }
    ::= { frwkSlotRoleComboTable 1 }
FrwkSlotRoleComboEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
    frwkSlotRoleComboSlotNumber Unsigned32
    }

We think this will solve the issues Pedro raised and will also allow the
DiffServ PIB to work correctly without any modification.

Please let us know if you have any comments, as the next version of the
draft will be going into IESG.

Thank you very much!

Hi Murali,

The PEP only needs to send requests to the PDP. It shouldn't send the
decisions it received. When the PDP gets the requests, it should send the
appropriate decisions to the PEP.

Hi,

Client Handle anyway will be part of the COPS-PR REQ message. I think as
part of
the Request State, PEP needs to send some more details. Section 2.3.1 from
"draft-ietf-rap-frameworkpib-06.txt" is mentioned below.

"2.3.1 Full Request State

   When the PEP wants to send the entire request state to the PDP (for
   example, in response to a Synchronize State Request from the PDP),
   the PEP MUST send the incarnation instance with the
   frwkPibIncarnationFullState attribute set to TRUE. "

But we are not clear as what "the entire request state" is made of? Will it
contain
updated Role-Combination/Capabilities/Limitations etc?

Regards
murali

Hi,
I am new to this list, so I apologize if this has already been reported.
In the FRAMEWORK-TC-PIB (section 3), the Role and RoleCombination
TEXTUAL-CONVENTIONs are defined using SnmpAdminString, which is also a
TEXTUAL-CONVENTION (imported from SNMP-FRAMEWORK-MIB.
This is not allowed in SPPI (RFC3159):

"11.1.2. Mapping of the SYNTAX clause The SYNTAX clause, which must be
present, defines abstract data structure corresponding to the textual
convention. The data structure must be one of the following: a base type
(see the SYNTAX clause of an OBJECT-TYPE macro), or the BITS construct. Note
that this means that the SYNTAX clause of a Textual Convention can not refer
to a previously defined Textual Convention."

Happy New Year,
	Ken
