Since 6lowpan is based on 802.15.4, why should we not use some of the 15.4
primitives?
I think the association/disassociation primitives can be used for the
commissioning and bootstrapping of the nodes.

best regards,

Because, in practice, many vendors use the 15.4 frame format and
mechanisms as a link layer, but do not use its MAC layer. So assuming
the MAC tie us closer to the link layer than may be necessary or
advisable, and preclude adoption by a broad range of users.

At the moment we do not use 802.15.4 primitives in our sensor network
deployments because we mainly have star networks of a few nodes with kn=
own
addresses and no need for scanning/association/network formation.... We=
 are
going for larger-scale networks.

I wouldn't mind utilize 802.15.4 primitives for 6lowpan commissioning /=

bootstrapping because 6lowpan is based on 802.15.4 and the present
primitives can do a lot, the processes are already defined and very oft=
en
already implemented in the nodes.

Because, in practice, many vendors use the 15.4 frame format and
mechanisms as a link layer, but do not use its MAC layer. So assuming
the MAC tie us closer to the link layer than may be necessary or
advisable, and preclude adoption by a broad range of users.

Some of the primitives will have to be used simply from the point of
view of coexistence. At the very least, any 6lowpan network does not
want to be using the same PAN ID on the same channel as another
15.4-based network. This implies using the scanning primitives in 15.4
to locate other networks in the vicinity. Correspondingly, any 6lowpan
coordinator should be a good neighbour and should therefore start
properly with the ability to respond with beacons which clearly identify
the associated PAN as a 6lowpan PAN. It also makes some sense to use the
15.4 association primitives to join the PAN through an appropriate
neighbouring coordinator. It is possible not to use association but you
will need alternative link establishment command frames to facilitate
this. It is probably not necessary to use disassociation as the device
is in-band at this point.

Hello Pascal,

=20

I have a few comments/questions regarding you fragment recovery
proposal.=20

=20

In your recoverable fragment header:

=20

Sequence number: At this point the consensus is that fragment sizes are
fixed. This deems the sequence number redundant since you can easily
extract the "sequence" number from the datagram offset, and needs not be
sent over the wireless media.

=20

Fields in re-coverable fragment header: I am wondering what the
rationale is behind changing the order of the header fields:

=20

RFC[4944] -> datagram size, datagram tag, datagram offset

=20

Re-coverable fragment: datagram offset, datagram tag, SEQUENCE (see
above, this is redundant), datagram size.

=20

Any reasons for re-arranging the order of the fields?

=20

Thank you.=20

Hi Robert:
=20
Thanks a lot for this posting; For all at 6LoWPAN, this is actually a
cross discussion with ISA 100.11a.=20

I posted a draft to the IETF on fragment recovery, the draft is not yet
visible from the I-D site so I attach it here for the sake of the
discussion. This draft was discussed inside ISA100 prior to posting to
IETF to get a local agreement prior to widening the discussion. ISA
100.11a members recognize that the work belongs to IETF, and are willing
to help the work happen there. Thus Robert's posting on this list.

 Robert, please see inline

>	In your recoverable fragment header:
> Sequence number: At this point the consensus is that fragment sizes
are fixed.=20

wireless media.

	=20
You are talking about an ISA decision to make the MTU size fixed on a
per node basis. My understanding is though we can expect all fragments
in a same datagram (but the last) to have a same size, RFC 4944 does not
mandate it so I think that we can not base our algorithm on this
expectation.=20

I could not figure a way to make the recovery FULLY backward compatible
with the existing formats and operations; there are efforts to improve
the draft in that direction and I hope we ultimately succeed. Christos
already proposed acknowledging offsets (TCP-like) to keep the formats
mostly unchanged from RFC 4944. But ths alone does not solve all the
compatibility issues so the draft still uses the simpler approach of
sequence counters.=20

>	Fields in re-coverable fragment header: I am wondering what the
rationale is behind changing the order of the header fields:
>	RFC[4944] -> datagram size, datagram tag, datagram offset
>	Re-coverable fragment: datagram offset, datagram tag, SEQUENCE
(see above, this is redundant), datagram size.
>	Any reasons for re-arranging the order of the fields?

Sequencinf the fragments needed a new field for an integer [0..31] of 5
bits. This aligns perfectly with datagram_size and saves from eating up
3 bits from the dispatch header. Considering that backward compatibility
was not achieved anyway, I took the liberty to optimize alignments save
on the dispatch header.

Thanks again,

Pascal

I'm not convinced that this WG (or the IETF in general) is the
appropriate place to specify MAC protocols. Requiring the use of
specific MAC protocols is tantamount to specifying the protocol. W.r.t
commissioning/bootstrapping, the way I see it is that the link-layer/MAC
simply has a set of attributes, some of which 6LoWPAN utilizes (e.g.
short-addrs, EUI-64, etc.). These attributes must be configured
somehow, but the specific way they get set is out of scope of this WG.

Clearly we should not be specifying MAC protocols here, and there is a
lot of energy and flux around the 15.4 MAC (e.g. the 15.4E working group
is chartered to update it to make it capable of time synchronization and
channel hopping).
We have talked in this group about developing an abstraction for the MAC
layer which allows us to capture the tradeoffs between, e.g.,
throughput, latency, and duty cycle available in many of the non-IEEE
MAC implementations that use the 15.4 PHY.
Can we generate an explicit list of attributes as you suggest, including
abstractions of some of these features that many/most of us use, but
which are still not a part of the 15.4 MAC?

Carsten reminded me that this was a topic of discussion at the last

There were some suggestions that we should utilize some of the 15.4 MAC
primitives for 6lowpan commissioning / bootstrapping. Others insisted
that we not require any of the 15.4 primitives.

Let try to resolve this question.

Hi,

Nice to see Geoff woke up the list, and that someone is really on
vacation (no jealousy ;-).

I have to agree with Jonathan here. A set of attributes is the most
appropriate in this case, and this makes it much easier to use 6lowpan
over other link layers or minimal 802.15.4 implementations. For example
I would definitely avoid explicit use of association/disassociation in
beacon-enabled mode. Most deployments in our experience will use
beaconless mode where those primitives are not available. ICMP can be
used instead of MAC primitives for many purposes. I would prefer to
leave the link-layer topology construction details to the
implementation, some kind of network management entity separate from
6lowpan and IETF standardization. For example with WiFi + IP
implementations, the IETF does not take a stand on whether or how you
configure your interface (ad-hoc mode, infrastructure mode, ap mode) nor
manage it.

Hello Geoff, Zach and all in this thread of discussion:

From the discussion, it seems we want some sort of L2 indication from
802.15.4 for bootstrapping and comissioning, but IETF is not quite
capable of defining those primitives.

I do agree that L2 primitives would be the easiest way to act for
commissioning in number of cases. I think 6lowpan wg can do the
following within the scope of IETF:

1. Identify the cases when L2 primitive is useful for commissioning
2. Provide a set of API which deals with L2 primitives or any other L2
specific methods to provide the necessary information to complete the
commissioning part. Note that then we do not have to define the L2
primitives and it can be left with the implementation.

Comments?

Thanks,
-Samita

Hi folks,
=20
=20
I was checking the mail archive for the final version of the charter.
Did you guys make any progress? Will the charter be available before
next IETF meeting?
Or do you plan to finalize it during the session?
=20
Thanks

Just in case you missed it, the agenda for the next IETF has been (an
may still be further) updated.

Currently the 6lowpan WG meeting is scheduled for Tuesday Morning (9 to
1130).

We need to set an agenda for this meeting - any input?

Secondly the ROLL WG has been formed. They currently have a their
meeting scheduled for Thursday morning (9 to 1130).

If you have any thoughts about the agenda and topics for this meeting
please let me know.

	geoff

Hi Geof,

Is the charter already finalised ? I looked at the work-items; some
of them seem to be very generic. Do we want to solidify each bullet
item a bit more so that the work-items are focused?

For example, what do we mean by "Addressing scheme and address
management" ? We do have some guidelines already in the main format
doc on the address scheme. But we want to develop some protocol for
address management.

"Security - including set-up and maintenance"  could be a broad topic;
but I thought 6lowpan would only be doing limited amount of work in
this group.

For ND and bootstrapping, there has been some discussion in the
mailing list. It might be a good idea to allocate some time on this
item to have more discussion and hopefully a decision on which way to
go.

Also - Architecture work in 6lowpan is missing in the charter.

Sorry, for the delay in my response in the charter discussion.

Regards,
-Samita

Hi,

The updated draft of security anslysis (03 version) has been submitted
to IETF, so it can be included into a meeting agenda.

Routing Requirement(-04) and Application space(-02) draft will be submitted.
We can discuss the update and get more input to progress the work in
the meeting.

BTW, is there any news on rechartering?

Thanks,

I also want to announce that

6LoWPAN Routing Requirements 04 is avalable at
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-dokaspar-6lowpan-routreq-04.txt

and the 6LoWPAN Application space is at
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ekim-6lowpan-scenarios-02.txt

Routing Req draft has new skeleton for the requirements,
and App draft got updated with more practical examples and their tech. features.
