Speaker: John Mattsson, Senior Specialist at Ericsson Security Research

Topic: The Real Deal on Cellular Security

Topic Description:
This talk will describe how cellular security has evolved in earlier
generations as well as the industry's vision for security and privacy
in 5G. 2G systems were among the first global mass-market products
using cryptography in a time when only secret algorithms could be
used. Much has happened since, and all algorithms and protocols are
now public. The goal of the talk is to dispel myths, describe the
current situation in 4G, and how 5G will improve security and privacy
while at the same time increase flexibility and enable IoT use cases.

Speaker Biography:
John Mattsson is a Senior Specialist at Ericsson Security Research
with a focus on Security Protocols, Cryptography, and IoT. John has
been active in 3GPP and the IETF on a large number of topics and is
now coordinating Ericsson's security related activities in the
IETF. He holds a M.Sc. in Engineering Physics from KTH (Royal
Institute of Technology, Sweden) and a M.Sc. in Business
Administration and Economics from Stockholm University.

Gentlepeople,
Welcome to IETF98 in Chicago! You will find the usual IETF =
Network information document at:

	https://tickets.meeting.ietf.org/wiki/IETF98network

We=E2=80=99re having some extraordinary issues with the =
Guestroom and Public networks in the Swiss=C3=B4tel that are requiring =
some further work on the NOC team=E2=80=99s part.=20

While we continue to work to have the usual IETF network in the =
public and guest room areas, the Swiss=C3=B4tel has kindly offered the =
use of the =E2=80=9Cswissotel=E2=80=9D wireless network for everyone, =
using the code =E2=80=9CSWISSOTEL0317=E2=80=9D.=20

Also, if you happen to be in the Fairmont Hotel, you=E2=80=99ll =
find the =E2=80=9Cietf-fairmont=E2=80=9D SSID to be active and available =

Gentlepeople,
You should now see the =E2=80=9Cietf-hotel=E2=80=9D SSID in the =
guest rooms and public spaces (bar, etc, but not the Palm Restaurant) of =
the Swiss=C3=B4tel. It serves up the IETF network over IPv4 with our =
usual public address space. Unfortunately, at this time we=E2=80=99ve =
not been able to reconfigure the hotel wireless infrastructure to pass =
IPv6. We continue to work the problem and hope to be able to add v6 soon =
(probably with a late-night reconfiguration). If anyone has practical =
experience with reconfiguring Ruckus wireless infrastructures to pass =
IPv6, we=E2=80=99d appreciate the help!

Just a reminder: If you have any network issues, please send =
email to tickets@meeting.ietf.org or come see the Helpdesk in Vevey 3 =
starting at 16:00 today.

	-Jim

From: IAOC Chair

This report is provided in advance of IETF98 for the purpose of giving =
IETF participants more detail of the current work of the IAOC. Please =
feel free to bring any questions about its contents to the IETF Plenary =
in Chicago, or share them directly with the IAOC (iaoc@ietf.org).

Key areas of this update are:

This meeting:
IETF 98 Chicago

Forward-looking:
Locations and Global Travel Challenges
Community Members on IAOC Committees
Sponsorship and Funding Challenges
Update on Ongoing Topics

2016 Review:
2016 Financial Summary

IETF 98 Chicago

We look forward to a successful meeting in Chicago and thank our Global =
Host, Ericsson for hosting this meeting. Their willingness to step up to =
hosting this meeting is particularly noteworthy as we meet in this =
backup location. We shifted to Chicago when our Montreal venue notified =
us about 18 months ago that they would be unavailable to house IETF 98 =
due to renovations. Unfortunately, we can't adjust to all shorter-notice =
changes that impact venues -- as most are aware has occurred for this =
meeting. The community has responded to this well, and we appreciate the =
organizations that are helping in different ways.

Locations and Global Travel Challenges

More generally, as the realities of global travel continue to change, =
the IAOC is endeavouring to monitor the situations that will impact all =
of our participants. We meet this week in the United States, a country =
that has changed its visa and visitor requirements significantly in =
recent weeks. Prior to the meeting, we received input from people who =
would be unable to attend the meeting in Chicago. We are interested in =
hearing whether or what unusual or additional challenges people faced as =
they crossed the border to come to the Chicago meeting. Stay tuned for =
a message in the near future outlining what we're looking for in =
particular, and where to share the information. Thanks, in advance, for =
your thoughtful input.

We have more meetings booked in the US in the upcoming years, and are =
reassessing these. We continue to monitor the situation for people =
traveling to this country (as we do for travel to other IETF meeting =
host countries), and will make updates as and when necessary. We are =
also conscious, however, that travel requirements may make it difficult =
for US residents to travel to a non-US IETF meeting with a reasonable =
expectation of a smooth return home. They may be only able to attend US =
meetings. Accordingly, we will have to weigh the relative impacts on the =
community when making a decision.

Community Members on IAOC Committees

Last July we asked the community for volunteers to help on the IAOC=E2=80=99=
s various committees (https://iaoc.ietf.org/committees.html). We remain =
appreciative of peoples=E2=80=99 willingness to volunteer, and have =
benefited from the participation of the community members on the =
committees. As the IAOC constitutes its committees annually =E2=80=94 =
i.e., the nature of the committees and their composition may change =E2=80=
=94 we will be putting out another call for community volunteers in the =
coming days.

Sponsorship and Funding =E2=80=94 Appreciation and Challenges

Looking forward in 2017, we have set higher fundraising goals for a =
broader set of sponsorship and funding targets that are part of our =
planned budget. With attendance at IETF 98 coming in lower than expected =
by about 150, the sponsorship support is increasingly important. =
Unfortunately, early reports on progress in 2017 are not as promising as =
we would like, down by about $150,000.

One of the biggest challenges with finding sponsorship is often =
identifying interested sponsors and getting them in touch with the =
appropriate IETF representative to bring the sponsorship to fruition. If =
you are interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities outlined here =
https://iaoc.ietf.org/host-and-sponsorship.html, please get in touch =
with Howie Baggott baggott@isoc.org.

Additionally, the IAOC is considering establishing a Sponsorship Support =
Committee, and will be looking for additional volunteers. To be clear, =
the role of committee members would be to help the professional =
sponsorship staff identify possible opportunities, not to do =
fund-raising themselves!

Update on Ongoing Topics

Several people have asked about the Privacy Policy, for which we have =
asked for comments as drafts have progressed. The current version is on =
the agenda for discussion (and, hopefully, adoption) during the IAOC =
meeting at IETF 98.

The IANA supplementary agreement has been approved by the IAB, and we =
expect it will be adopted by the IAOC at this meeting.

2016 Financial Report

The December Financial Statement has been published and includes the =
year end IETF 2016 totals. The final numbers are in line with the =
shortfall the IAOC had been discussing and describing since the March =
meeting in 2016. There will be a more detailed year end commentary, with =
=E2=80=9Clessons learned=E2=80=9D to be published within 60 days.

Key items to note now are:

The good:
. operating expenses were as budgeted
. meeting expenses were below budget

The bad:
. attendance and sponsorship were both below expectations, meaning less =
income

With final 2016 numbers, the IETF=E2=80=99s total 2016 income of =
$3,925,501 was $410,499 below the Budget (-9.5%), while expenditures =
(excluding Tools Development) totaled $6,354,822, or $147,464 less than =
budgeted. Including the funding of Tools Development, ISOC provided =
funding of $2,574,164, $208,878 above the 2016 Budget. The overall =
outcome was better than we feared in March and were greatly helped by =
lower costs of meeting space and food and beverage as a result of =
changes to currency valuations.

Leslie Daigle,
IAOC Chair, for the IAOC.=

Gentlepeople,
As the meeting comes to a close, we wanted to update everyone on =
the shutdown schedule for the IETF Network. The wireless APs that =
deliver the main IETF networks in the Swiss=C3=B4tel meeting rooms will =
be removed throughout the day as sessions come to a close. The Terminal =
Room will be closed at 3pm today. The guest room Internet in both the =
Swiss=C3=B4tel and the Fairmont will revert to the traditional hotel =
networks this afternoon, and =E2=80=9Cietf-hotel=E2=80=9D will disappear =
from the public areas gradually through the afternoon.

One tidbit of information on the Swiss=C3=B4tel guest/public =
network. As we mentioned early on, the hotel installed a brand new =
wireless infrastructure just before we arrived: 802.11ac throughout =
with significant backhauls =E2=80=A6 sounded great to us! However, when =
we got onsite we identified a number of issues, the worst of which was =
that the APs would =E2=80=9Cblack hole=E2=80=9D a given association =
randomly, and would require moving to a different SSID or reset of your =
wireless to get service restored. Even worse, this seemed to happen most =
in the lobby bar! Since last Sunday, the NOC team, hotel technical =
staff, and hotel wireless vendors have been working together to resolve =
these issues. These efforts have been continuous, including after-hours =
troubleshooting, debugging, packet capture analysis, and even the =
deployment of custom firmware images. I=E2=80=99m happy to say that as =
of last night, a fixed image was deployed to all 285 APs in the hotel =
and this issue should be squashed. We won=E2=80=99t benefit a lot, but =
we=E2=80=99re happy to leave the hotel network better than we found it! =
Many thanks to Clemens Schrimpe and Joe Clarke of the NOC team and Jamie =
Koziol of the Swiss=C3=B4tel for the tireless work on this!

We hope you all have a good trip home and look forward to seeing =
everyone in Prague!

	- Jim and the NOC Team
