Hi,

I really need some people to try to run my GRASP code before I consider
it useful enough to attach an open-source licence. So this message announces
a limited release of the code, still marked as copyrighted, with a
"health warning" that you will find in the beginning of the source file*.

An updated PDF document and several Python files can be found at
https://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~brian/graspy/ . PLEASE read the PDF
file first.

Enjoy,
   Brian

OK, the authors will assume consensus for this change, and we'll close issue 47 in the next draft.

Having heard no objection, I'm going to assume we can make this change
and close issue 46 in the next version.

o 28. Does ACP support secure link-local multicast?

The issue here is that GRASP has no choice but to use multicast
for discovery or flood messages, and such messages are intrinsically
insecure. So this isn't really an open issue for the protocol, but it
is a question for the ACP designers. Can they provide an ACP virtual
interface that supports secure LL multicast?

For the GRASP draft, this should probably be changed from being an open
issue into a specific paragraph in the Security Considerations.

o 42. Do we need a feature whereby an ASA can bypass the ACP and
use the data plane for efficiency/throughput? This would require
discovery to return non-ACP addresses and would evade ACP
      security.

Personal opinion: This is probably a bad idea. Trading security for
efficiency in network management seems like a mistake, even in
autonomic management.

WG input, please...

Brian,=20

I think you're asking the wrong question :-) I believe we had come to the=
conclusion that an ASA is essentially just a piece of code, which can do a=
nything it wants; specifically, we can't force it to use the ACP, it could =
also connect through the normal data plane to non-autonomic devices. The us=
e case was that an autonomic agent on a physical device may well control ot=
her devices which are possibly non-autonomic. This transaction would not be=
inside the ACP (because the other device is non autonomic). So an ASA can =
have ACP based interactions, and non-ACP based interactions.=20

I think there are different aspects to what you're saying:=20

- GRASP should ONLY run in the ACP. (I think this is what you mean, really,=
and I think we agree on that)
- But GRASP can negotiate ANYTHING. In fact, one negotiation objective coul=
d be the IP address of the peer node in the data plane. Why not?

So the negotiation itself is in the ACP, the data exchanged may refer to so=
mething outside the ACP, and now *IF* you were to do a connection to that a=
ddress, you wouldn't be protected by the ACP any more.=20

But that's ok (in my opinion), as long as the context is explicit. I.e. the=
ASA *knows* it's dealing with something outside the ACP. I had proposed a =
long time ago a "context", which could then point to the data plane (or oth=
er virtual contexts).=20

I suspect it wasn't my question originally ;-)

specifically, we can't force it to use the ACP, it could also connect through the normal data plane to non-autonomic devices.
The use case was that an autonomic agent on a physical device may well control other devices which are possibly non-autonomic.
This transaction would not be inside the ACP (because the other device is non autonomic). So an ASA can have ACP based
interactions, and non-ACP based interactions.

Yes, or in a TLS wrapper in the absence of an ACP.

The IP address, or FQDN if you prefer. Certainly possible.

Right. What I think would be dangerous is for GRASP discovery to return an address which is
not secured, i.e. is not an ACP or TLS-wrappable address. That would allow an ASA to slide
gently from secure to insecure without knowing about it.

So I think this can be resolved by some text in the Security Considerations.

o 43. Rapid mode synchronization and negotiation is currently
limited to a single objective for simplicity of design and
implementation. A future consideration is to allow multiple
objectives in rapid mode for greater efficiency.

My suggestion: leave this for the future, because it would cause
considerable complexity for ASA designers (multiple independent
negotiation threads triggered by a single message).

Regards
   Brian

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Autonomic Networking Integrated Model and Approach of the IETF.

Title : A Generic Autonomic Signaling Protocol (GRASP)
        Authors : Carsten Bormann
                          Brian Carpenter
                          Bing Liu
	Filename : draft-ietf-anima-grasp-03.txt
	Pages : 57
	Date : 2016-02-23

Abstract:
This document establishes requirements for a signaling protocol that
enables autonomic devices and autonomic service agents to dynamically
discover peers, to synchronize state with them, and to negotiate
parameter settings mutually with them. The document then defines a
general protocol for discovery, synchronization and negotiation,
while the technical objectives for specific scenarios are to be
described in separate documents. An Appendix briefly discusses
   existing protocols with comparable features.

A diff from the previous version is available at:

until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.

Hi,

Here are the main changes in this version, which as far as we know
respond to the various comments received:

Protocol change: Removed initiator field from certain messages and
adjusted relaying requirement to simplify loop detection. Also
clarified narrative explanation of discovery relaying.

Protocol change: Split Request message into two (Request Negotiation
and Request Synchronization) and updated other message names for
   clarity.

Protocol change: Dropped unused Device ID option.

Further clarified text on transport layer usage.

New text about multicast insecurity in Security Considerations.

Various other clarifications and editorial fixes, including moving
   some material to Appendix.

And here are the remaining open issues:

o 7. Cross-check against other ANIMA WG documents for consistency
      and gaps.

o 43. Rapid mode synchronization and negotiation is currently
limited to a single objective for simplicity of design and
implementation. A future consideration is to allow multiple
objectives in rapid mode for greater efficiency.

o 48. Should the Appendix "Capability Analysis of Current
Protocols" be deleted before RFC publication?

I will post an updated version of the Python prototype later today.

Regards
    Brian

Hi,

I really need some people to try to run my GRASP code before I consider
it useful enough to attach an open-source licence. This message announces
a new limited release of the code, updated for draft-ietf-anima-grasp-03.

The code is marked as copyrighted, but anybody is welcome to try it.
Pleas read the "health warning" at the beginning of the source file.
Updated documentation and several Python files can be found at
https://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~brian/graspy/

PLEASE read graspy.pdf first.

Enjoy,
   Brian
