  * Signaling design team presented document status. It has passed the WG=
LC just before the IETF97 meeting. Minors modification reported. Sheng is t=
he assigned document shepherd.
  * Bootstrap design team presented document status, the bootstrap docume=
nt itself is near mature, would be ready for WGLC soon after IETF97. It is =
reported a new Voucher work (draft-kwatsen-netconf-voucher) is needed as no=
mative reference. ANIMA is considering to process this work quickly.
  * Autonomic control plane draft presented work status, including the ar=
gument for GRASP/DULL for ACP: L2/LANs, etc.
  * Reference model document presented work status shortly, clarifying GR=
ASP (M_FLOOD) is used by default for first step.

Hi,

While wearing my Gen-ART reviewer's hat this morning, I found myself reading
the details of a particular use case for RPL*.

So, it seems to me that the ACP draft currently has a gap. It isn't enough
for interoperability to just say "use RPL". A few choices and parameters need
to be specified. That looks like a hole in the ACP spec at the moment.

Regards
   Brian

You read the AMI document, I'm guessing, which has been a long time in the
making, and was based upon a template, specifically so that industry people
would be more specific than "use RPL"
(Well, no. AMI is in AUTH48, so it must have been another document)

Yes, I mentioned that in my review of ACP last week, and I promised text to
add to it for this.

Hi, all,=0A=

Hi,

I support adoption of the draft, since we need it as part of Anima.

A couple of points seem to need attention before we get to WGLC:

> NOTE: AT THIS TIME, THE SIGNING STRATEGY HAS NOT BEEN SELECTED

I think that needs to resolved.

> Implementations MUST ensure devices have
> an accurate clock when shipped from manufacturing facilities, and
> take steps to prevent clock tampering.

Doesn't that pose a problem for very low-end devices? That is not
a concern for devices that are in scope for Anima, but I understand the
applicability is intended to be general. As such, the MUST seems
impossible to enforce.

Shouldn't the formulation be like this:

   Implementations SHOULD ensure devices have
an accurate clock when shipped from manufacturing facilities, and
MUST then take steps to prevent clock tampering.

If it is not possible to ensure clock accuracy and integrity,
implementations MUST disable the aspects of the solution having clock
   sensitivity.

By the same logic,

> It is important to note that implementations SHOULD NOT rely on NTP
> for time, as it is not a secure protocol.

I think that should be a MUST NOT. Otherwise product managers will ignore it.

Regards
   Brian

Although it was submitted to netconf WG originally, after discussion with netconf chairs and corresponding ADs, we all agree ANIMA is the right home for it. If adopted, the authors hope to be ready for WGLC before Chicago, giving that our milestone work item bootstrap key infrastructure normatively refer it.

I think the security considerations section requires some discussion.=20
In particular, a more detailed threat analysis should be given and more
specific recommendations given. I can say with some certainty that some
devices do not and will not have RTCs. However, this discussion need
not take place during a call for adoption.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Autonomic Networking Integrated Model and Approach of the IETF.

Title : A Generic Autonomic Signaling Protocol (GRASP)
        Authors : Carsten Bormann
                          Brian Carpenter
                          Bing Liu
	Filename : draft-ietf-anima-grasp-09.txt
	Pages : 75
	Date : 2016-12-16

Abstract:
This document establishes requirements for a signaling protocol that
enables autonomic devices and autonomic service agents to dynamically
discover peers, to synchronize state with them, and to negotiate
parameter settings mutually with them. The document then defines a
general protocol for discovery, synchronization and negotiation,
while the technical objectives for specific scenarios are to be
described in separate documents. An Appendix briefly discusses
   existing protocols with comparable features.

Hi,

This version resolves a round of post-WGLC comments, mainly from Michael Richardson.

There are various wording improvements and clarifications, and minor corrections.
Also there are two real changes:

1. Slightly modified format for the Flood message, so that a separate locator can
be associated with each objective if several are flooded together.

2. Added a flag bit to indicate that an objective is negotiated in dry-run mode.
At the same time the text is now clearer about the way the flag bits are set.

There's a detailed change log in the draft.

Regards
   Brian Carpenter

The Python code at https://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~brian/graspy/ now corresponds
to draft-ietf-anima-grasp-09.

If you downloaded any earlier code, I strongly suggest updating it. I fixed
a few bugs, added the dry-run flag, and updated the Flood message syntax.

Regards
   Brian

I STRONGLY agree.
I have been suggesting that we should use CWT:
  https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-ace-cbor-web-token/

Reading this is short and sweet, because really all the crypto is in:
  I-D.ietf-cose-msg

and the concepts are from RFC7515.

I think that much of this will be dealt with in the audit vs ownership token
discussion which is currently in the bootstrap document, but will get moved
to this document.

I think it's been said further down in the thread, but BRSKI does not run
on "restart", it runs on "first boot", so unless the disaster entails doing
full factory resets there is no problem.

If the disaster involves replacing equipment that was destroyed, then we
do what we already know we have to do: we build the network trust up in
concentrics rings around the Registrar.

I agree that it's during a disaster that we most need autonomic networking,
because it lets less skilled people bring up networks, removing a major
human resource bottleneck.

(I wonder how we could get funding from the various emergency preparedness
agencies)

Brian and I have been discussing thoughts about an ANIMA Hackathon at IETF9=
4.

The question has been: how much code would be ready, and how much
interoperation could be actually attempt!

In my mind the first bakeoff/hackathon will likely be a bit underwhelming
because people won't have enough code yet. That's okay: the point is to
invite people to come and consider how they are going to do things.
i.e. this is as much marketing is it is interoperation, but it's
marketing to get participation in the future!!!!

We can't plan just the one hackathon.

From=20my point of view, I see the several stages/actors of bootstrap.
I'm listing them because they can be mock'ed if someone has no code for thi=
s.

1) registrar.
2) network of ACP nodes running GRASP, of which one is a willing proxy.
3) new pledge
4) vendor / manufacturer CA

I have some (RubyOnRails) code that can operate as a bit of a registrar, and
I'll have more by March that can do more EST things, but the code I have now
can be used to manually generate certificates. So, ANIMA systems that
don't have bootstrap code could be manually bootstrapped, and we likely will
learn something doing that.

The network of ACP nodes running GRASP, at least on Linux, is "trivial" to
setup in a mock situation.

At least, it's easy for me to do, and I would very much be happy to share
that experience, so you'd have "installed ACP code".

Could we find someone with enough Microsoft Windows IPsec clue to set up
tunnel on Windows, and figure out how to get the right certificates loaded?
I dunno... maybe someone here knows how. Also Cisco, Juniper, Ericsson, etc
routers might be manually configured to do ACP tunnels; and we likely learn
something trying to make things interoperate.

So even if we couldn't get RPL to operate across a multi-platform situation,
we might still be able to, for instance, M_FLOOD something across a bunch of
IPsec P2P tunnels connecting things. That would be a significant
accomplishment in my mind for a first attempt.
