A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Autonomic Networking Integrated Model and Approach WG of the IETF.

Title : Bootstrapping Remote Secure Key Infrastructures (BRSKI)
        Authors : Max Pritikin
                          Michael C. Richardson
                          Michael H. Behringer
                          Steinthor Bjarnason
                          Kent Watsen
	Filename : draft-ietf-anima-bootstrapping-keyinfra-14.txt
	Pages : 94
	Date : 2018-04-14

Abstract:
This document specifies automated bootstrapping of a remote secure
key infrastructure (BRSKI) using manufacturer installed X.509
certificate, in combination with a manufacturer's authorizing
service, both online and offline. Bootstrapping a new device can
occur using a routable address and a cloud service, or using only
link-local connectivity, or on limited/disconnected networks.
Support for lower security models, including devices with minimal
identity, is described for legacy reasons but not encouraged.
Bootstrapping is complete when the cryptographic identity of the new
key infrastructure is successfully deployed to the device but the
established secure connection can be used to deploy a locally issued
certificate to the device as well.

Kent, Max and I have closed off the remaining bigger issues arising from the
various reviews and discussions in between resolving ietf-anima-voucher
AUTH48 issues.

As a result of RFC-EDITOR comments about ietf-anima-voucher, we have
made the "pledge" and "registrar" lower case in this document to be
consistent with the ietf-anima-voucher document.

This is in contrast to what we did we a month ago when we made them
consistently upper case, as we were thinking of them as Proper Nouns.

The major changes are in the organization of section 5.
New sub-headings, and we made sure that were not writing normative
MUSTs in summary/overview statements.
New section 5.7.2 on interpreting the audit log.

Many other small changes, see:
   https://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-anima-bootstrapping-keyinfra-14

https://github.com/anima-wg/anima-bootstrap/issues shows three issues
open:
  1) proper noun question above.
  2) two issues open for updating of examples, including providing a CSR
example. This will require some code to mature.

{ps: ietf-anima-voucher is waiting in AUTH48 for an AD sign off on
a small addition to security considerations, then it will be out}

A few comments on the issues raised at IETF 101:

> 2c. GRASP Application Program Interface (API) - 10min
> 9:55 - 10:05, by Bing Liu, draft-ietf-anima-grasp-api
> [Sheng Jiang] Why "current API lacks support explicit locators for an objective
> " is an issue? It's straightforward to just expose it. And let the ASAs
> decide whether to use it.
> [Bing] We're not very sure whether it is good to open such detailed thing to
> ASAs by the GRASP module.

I think it is straightforward. In fact, I already added it to the Python
code, as an optional parameter for the register_obj() call. I found a
use for it in one variant of my demo implementation of BRSKI discovery.

So do people think the API description should include this?

> [Sheng] Error codes between API and GRASP module and error codes inside the
> GRASP are different. If it is the latter, it should be in GRASP document.
> [Bing] It's inside the GRASP, but it is mostly regarding to ASAs.
> (Errata: it is actually in the API not in GRASP messages.)

Right. But it's still an open question whether most of the
return codes should be standardised or implementation-dependent.

The first four IMHO definitely need to be standard:

ok = 0       #"Call succeeded"
declined = 1 #"Declined"
noReply = 2  #"No reply"
unspec = 3   #"Unspecified error"

> [Toerless Eckert] The main issue to me would be that the functionality

> that's the type of functional document not an API document.

Correct, it's almost an API on top of the API ;-)

More comments on the discussion at IETF 101:

I understand that argument, and the document is far from finished.
But how can we encourage people (not just IETF people) to provide
the experience? I think we need open source implementations of the
ANI components ASAP.

...> [Alex Galis] 1) this draft is to better describe the border between service

Again: we need experience, not theory, to clarify this.

Remember though that ANIMA is a *management* mechanism. Certainly
it can manage virtual functions and components, just as easily as
physical devices. I don't see a problem of principle here at all.
The ASAs need the administrative privilege necessary to manage
the virtual components, that's all.
(The ACP itself is a virtual network, using VRF functionality.)

GRASP requires a secure substrate. It doesn't actually *require*
draft-ietf-anima-autonomic-control-plane; that's just the first exemplar
of a secure substrate. GRASP could be deployed tomorrow over any other
sort of secure substrate (or, heretically, with no security at all,
but I don't advocate that outside a hackathon).

Alex, can you propose a simple alternative to the ACP?

> 6.Transferring Bulk Data over the GRASP - 10min
> 10:55 - 11:05, by Bing Liu, draft-carpenter-anima-grasp-bulk
>
> [Sheng] I see use cases of this, e.g. IoT device software/firmware update. But
> I'm not sure why you have the MTU as 2000 byte?
> [Bing] It is mostly for convenience of parsing the GRASP messages because under
> layer is CBOR serialization, a fixed 2000 byte is easy to identify the end
> of the message.

At some point in the design of GRASP it became clear that a default
maximum message size was a practical requirement. The choice of 2048
was made in draft-ietf-anima-grasp-08. Discussion thread at:
https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/anima/y-WC1sUFYJ6f_gBALzrg6M4obvE
The practical impact is the buffer size you set for recvfrom(). Also,
there will be a physical limit for UDP multicast. The GRASP spec says:

GRASP nodes MUST be able to receive unicast messages of at least
GRASP_DEF_MAX_SIZE bytes. GRASP nodes MUST NOT send unicast messages
longer than GRASP_DEF_MAX_SIZE bytes unless a longer size is
explicitly allowed for the objective concerned. For example, GRASP
negotiation itself could be used to agree on a longer message size.

So it would be quite legal for bulk transfer to negotiate a larger
size. (I had forgotten that when Joel raised this issue.)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Autonomic Networking Integrated Model and Approach WG of the IETF.

Title : Bootstrapping Remote Secure Key Infrastructures (BRSKI)
        Authors : Max Pritikin
                          Michael C. Richardson
                          Michael H. Behringer
                          Steinthor Bjarnason
                          Kent Watsen
	Filename : draft-ietf-anima-bootstrapping-keyinfra-15.txt
	Pages : 94
	Date : 2018-04-26

The ANIMA WG has placed draft-richardson-anima-ace-constrained-voucher in
state Call For Adoption By WG Issued (entered by Toerless Eckert)

The document is available at
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-richardson-anima-ace-constrained-voucher/

Comment:
draft-richardson-anima-ace-constrained-voucher was presented at IETF101
and received good interest. The authors asked for adoption. As far
as the chairs heard, there was no objection in the room. As new
work, we discussed this with the new AD for ANIMA Ignas Bagdonas and
also concluded that this work would be in scope of our current chater.

We hereby are officially asking the working group to confirm adoption
of this work: This message starts a two-week adoption call on:

Title: Constrained Voucher Profile for Bootstrapping Protocols
Name: draft-richardson-anima-ace-constrained-voucher
Authors: M. Richardson, P. van der Stok, P. Kampanakis
URL:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-richardson-anima-ace-constraine
d-voucher/

Please express your support or rejection. If you think this document
should _not_ be adopted, please also explicitly indicate the reasons.

This adoption call will end on May 12, 2018.

More information as follows:

This document is intended to become standards track ANIMA WG document
(-03 has a format mistake indicating informational, this would be fixed).

Standard track is desired because it is meant to become the required
voucher format for solutions with (low-end) devices with existing or
future signaling protocols.

One of the candidate future signaling to use this voucher is
draft-ietf-ace-coap-est. Another one is BRSKI with DTLS
using the CBOR encoding proposed in the document for use cases
of the FairHair association which includes members from ZigBEE, KNX
and Bacnet. It would also be needed to by other 6tisch
documents such as draft-ietf-6tisch-dtsecurity-zerotouch-join
(from which this voucher draft was actually extracted, similarily to
how voucher was extracted from BRSKI).

The choice for bringing this to anima was done because of the experience
with the first voucher draft, comparing possible working groups and
concluding that ANIMA was best the best WG for it.

draft-richardson-anima-ace-constrained-voucher was presented at IETF101
and received good interest. The authors asked for adoption. As far
as the chairs heard, there was no objection in the room. As new
work, we discussed this with the new AD for ANIMA Ignas Bagdonas and
also concluded that this work would be in scope of our current chater.

We hereby are officially asking the working group to confirm adoption
of this work: This message starts a two-week adoption call on:

Title: Constrained Voucher Profile for Bootstrapping Protocols
Name: draft-richardson-anima-ace-constrained-voucher
Authors: M. Richardson, P. van der Stok, P. Kampanakis
URL: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-richardson-anima-ace-constrained-voucher/

Regards
    ANIMA chairs (Sheng & Toerless)

A fast review of the document, but I have no problems with having it
adopted.

* In section 1 para #4 you appear to have a formatting error where a list
was supposed to exist.

* Section 5 - you have a return of multiple items with the same rt value.
However I would not want to have to filter through the list of return values
to figure out which is the "root" one. Should this example have the
rt=ace.est attribute on all of the links?

* Section 5 the description of ct=16 is not quite correct as it is missing
the encrypt0 subtype. This text might lead people to conclude that any
application/cose type can use 16

* Suggest a strong recommendation on not use cmsVersion=1 to make your life
easier.

Jim

Hi Jim,

thanks for the encouragement.

You mean that a list of omitted sections should be added?

The example is an example and people can decide to do it differently.
Two alternatives:
- only return the root collection
- define additional rt values per resource

You have a preference? I prefer the first approach

Thanks, I fixed that in the markdown.

I'm not clueful about this part, and generally quite fearful about parsing
this stuff. Sure, it's easy in Ruby, but it's the constrained C code that
I'm concerned about, so I don't understand the tradeoffs here.

In other words: to not be PKCS7 compatible, but require CMS processing.

I think this is reasonable from a specification point of view, but there has
been pushback from people who have FIPS-140 libraries that they
have hard times getting updated.

There are a couple of questions that I would put here that I think guides
things.

* Is there any expectation that the path components would ever change for
some implementation or are they always going to be the same? Would a
request voucher always be posted to /rv or could an implementation change it
to be /rvr?
* Is there a reason for an endpoint to want to get what services are
supported as a general rule rather than just assuming that if the root
exists then all of the services are also going to exist.

If the answer to the first question is no, then I don't know that they even
need to have resource types. You get the root and go from there.
If the answer to both questions is yes, then a different rt for every
service would be needed so that they can be distinguished.
If the answer to the first question is no and the second is yes, then it
would make sense to define a generic rt='ace.est.service' so that the root
and the list of services can be queried for individually.

Just to be clear, they have updated the library sufficiently to be able to
verify CMS messages but not to create them? We are also talking about
libraries which have not been updated to deal with any 'new' crypto as that
would not be supported by old bcrypt libraries as well.

Note this is also an interesting question for how you are going to label the
CBOR encoded voucher. If you use id-data, then the question is moot and
everybody goes forward happy. On the other hand if you assign a new OID for
this then it would need to be an ASN.1 object for the PKCKS7 people to
encode based on my historic work with such packages. This is because for
types which are not id-data the type and length bytes are stripped from the
content before it is processed by the PKCS#7 library.

I had to go back and double check that I had things right but there is a
trick that can be played for the PKCS#7 people.

A new content type id-ct-cborVoucher can be defined with the content of
"these are the CBOR encoded bytes". That is NO ASN.1 wrapper is included.
This works well for CMS

The people who are stuck in the old world of PKCS #7 can encode this by
using the ASN.1 type of OCTET STRING for this OID. The
signature/verification process for them will strip the OCTET STRING type and
lengths and just sign/verify the content of the OCTET STRING. This is the
same as would be done for CMS.

This trick works only if the new content type is OCTET STRING and would fail
for any other ASN.1 type
