BRSKI provides a algorithm to determine which attribute will be the
serial-number of the pledge, text attached below.

I am looking for examples of an IDevID that has:
1) a HardwareModuleName rather than a subject DN serialNumber.
2) a HardwareModuleName *as well* as a subject DN serialNumber.

I can probably create them, but I would rather use something produced
by a genuine TPM.

(Alternatively, maybe someone can recommend a USB interfaced TPM module that
would let me completely own what it does)

I'd like to include the result in an appendix, as well as use it as test
cases in my code.

2.3.1. Identification of the Pledge

In the context of BRSKI, pledges are uniquely identified by a
"serial-number". This serial-number is used both in the "serial-
number" field of voucher or voucher-requests (see Section 3) and in
local policies on registrar or MASA (see Section 5).

The following fields are defined in [IDevID] and [RFC5280]:

o The subject field's DN encoding MUST include the "serialNumber"
attribute with the device's unique serial number. (from [IDevID]
section 7.2.8, and [RFC5280] section 4.1.2.4's list of
      standard attributes)

   o The subject-alt field's encoding MAY include a non-critical
version of the RFC4108 defined HardwareModuleName. (from [IDevID]
section 7.2.9) If the IDevID is stored in a Trusted Platform
Module (TPM), then this field MAY contain the TPM identification
rather than the device's serial number. If both fields are
present, then the subject field takes precedence.

and they are used as follows by the pledge to build the "serial-
number" that is placed in the voucher-request. In order to build it,
the fields need to be converted into a serial-number of "type
string". The following methods are used depending on the first
available IDevID certificate field (attempted in this order):

Toerless and Sheng,

Here are some editorial suggestions for the draft charter.

  Bill

Para 5. I believe that the sentence is trying to express two areas of
work: generic aspects of ASA and lifecycle management. To make this
clear, please add a comma after "guidelines".

Para 9, bullets 1, 2, 3, and 4. "etc." is an abbreviation for "et
cetera", which means "and others; and so forth; and so on". As a
result, writing "and etc." would mean "and and others". Please remove
the "and" in these four bullets.

Bullet 1. I understand what a "virtualization environment" is. Could
you explain what a "compounding environment" is?

Bullet 1. Since "e.g. YANG models" is (presumably) part of the point
about OAMP, I suggest the following change:
"Provisioning), e.g. YANG models," -> "Provisioning) (e.g. YANG
models)," (This makes the part about YANG subordinate to OAMP.)

Bullet 2. "regarding to generic" -> "regarding generic"

Bullet 2.  "implementer" -> "implementation"

Bullet 4. "Autonomic Network" -> "Autonomic Networks" (add "s")

Bullet 4. "management, autonomic SLA" -> "management, autonomic SLA"
(Add space after comma.)

Para 10, line 1. "the the" -> "the" (Delete extra "the".)

I've been through the charter a few times before.
The edits from William are worthwhile.

I suggest references to the work itself:
>The ANI is specified through prior ANIMA work. It is composed of the
>Autonomic Control Plane (ACP: RFC 8368), Bootstrap over Secure Key Infrastructures

Other than that, I'm very happy with the charter.
I put those edits into the wiki, and I also fixed a few spelling mistakes.

I'd like to see an additional item added for the consideration of using =
the bootstrapping mechanism defined in draft-ietf-netconf-zerotouch for =
ANIMA.

I would be willing to work on a document that defined the appropriate =
binding.

Thanks,
Kent

I think that would be useful to define how it would work.
In particular, being able to better define the voucher on USB stick
mechanism, but I think that the call-home mechanisms with redirect would
also be useful for many devices.

It's clearly in scope ("Works extending ANI, including variation of ANI

It's also clearly worth a discussion of how it would affect ACP formation
and whether it would assist with Layer 2 ACP formation.

Hi,

Since there was no time for the presentation in Prague, I'd like to start
a discussion here about the idea of a Layer 2 ACP. In terms of the new charter,
this idea fits into "Works extending ANI, including variation of ANI deployment".

The draft is at
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-carpenter-anima-l2acp-scenarios .
The slides are at https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/104/materials/slides-104-anima-scenarios-and-requirements-for-layer-2-autonomic-control-planes-00 .

The basic argument is that GRASP must run over a secure ACP substrate,
but the regular Layer 3 ACP is complex and aimed at large networks.
A simpler Layer 2 solution would be good for a small enterprise or
for an enterprise that prefers to segment its network into small units
for management.

One important difference from the regular ACP is that the nodes will need
to be preconfigured before deployment with a VLAN ID, and a password or
encryption key if necessary. Whether this can be automated is for further
study (but Kent Watsen's suggestion for draft-ietf-netconf-zerotouch
might help with this).

Please have a look at the draft and comment on whether this is a good
idea and whether you'd like to contribute.

Regards
   Brian Carpenter

Clearly, the availability of a Layer 2 ACP would enable a community of
people who would like to experiment or develop, but who do not have
access to 1000+ processors.

Also, it seems to me that the "initial conditions" for a Layer 2
solution (preconfigured VLAN ID, password, etc.) are likely to be the
same as those for a geographically-distributed overlay solution.
Development of a Layer 2 solution could help/encourage the development
of an "overlay ACP", which could ease the development of new Autonomic
Functions.

So, given that I am a university professor with limited resources, I
think that this proposal is a *very* good idea.

Hi,

I've pushed an updated grasp.py to https://github.com/becarpenter/graspy
It enhances the flood() function to allow all GRASP locator types
rather than just IPv6 addresses.

Thanks to Robin Jaeger.

Hi,

Another update following recent comments. The main changes were
moving the taxonomy to an appendix, some new examples, and editorial
improvements. Please send any new comments that you may have to
int-area@ietf.org

At the moment the authors plan to submit this draft soon to the
Independent Submissions stream, but we'd be glad to hear any
alternative suggestions.

Regards
   Brian + Bing

	Filename : draft-carpenter-limited-domains-07.txt

Abstract:
There is a noticeable trend towards network requirements, behaviours
and semantics that are specific to a limited region of the Internet
and a particular set of requirements. Policies, default parameters,
the options supported, the style of network management and security
requirements may vary. This document reviews examples of such
limited domains, also known as controlled environments, and emerging
solutions, and includes a related taxonomy. It then briefly
discusses the standardization of protocols for limited domains.
Finally, it shows the needs for a precise definition of limited
domain membership and for mechanisms to allow nodes to join a domain
securely and to find other members, including boundary nodes.

Due to a design concern my MASA looks up domain registrars by public key rather
than certificate(DN). I think that I did this because of constrained voucher
concerns.
A test registrar resigned the certificate used for pinning, and used that as
part of the BRSKI protocol. The private key was not replaced, so it had the
same public key inside the certificate.

The resulting voucher was pinned to the original certificate, rather than the
certificate that was present. This was then rejected by the pledge because
the certificate pinned was not the same as the registrar that was proximal.

Before I fix the bug in the MASA such that it always pins with the
certificate provided, I thought I'd ask some questions. It could be that my
pledge was wrong instead.

1) how should a pledge compare pinned-domain-cert to TLS Server Certificate.
   a) compare Issuer + DN+subjectAltName.
   b) compare subjectPublicKeyInfo
   c) byte-wise comparison of DER encoded form.

   [I am doing c]

2) how should a MASA audit a voucher-request that comes from a JRC that has
the same public key, but a different certificate?

   a) it is the same owner, if the old certificate is still valid, then
      keep it.
   b) it is the same owner, keep the new certificate on file, replacing the
      previous certificate
   c) it is the same owner, keep whichever certificate has a later notAfter.
   d) it is the same owner, only if the issuer+DN are the same. In which
case keep the one with ...
       i) a newer PKIX serial number (no, ramdomized serial numbers)
       ii) latest notAfter
       iii) ???

I note that a high-availability multi-node JRC might have:
   a) different certificates with the same DN, and different public keys
   b) different certificates with the same DN, and the same public keys,
because rewewal times were skewed. (They will become the same at the
         next sync)
   c) different certificates with different DNs

{I note that doing Issuer+DN comparisons is difficult to get right if the
Issuer public key is not easily obtained from a trusted store}

Now, you might say that the pledge should never expect the TLS Server
Certificate to ever differ, byte-for-byte from the pinned-domain-cert, and
that would be reasonable for a completely online situation.

But in the case of offline vouchers, it's entirely reasonable that the JRC
has rolled it's certificate. In such a situation, either one needs (1a) or
(1b) above. If we are doing (1a), then we get back to something we thought
we got away from, which was pinning the CA+DN. We have underspecified this.

If we go with (1b), then there are some crypto-hygiene operational
considerations to consider, but I think they are probably acceptable given
that vouchers can be re-issued easily.

Martin Vigoureux has entered the following ballot position for
charter-ietf-anima-01-05: Block

When responding, please keep the subject line intact and reply to all
email addresses included in the To and CC lines. (Feel free to cut this
introductory paragraph, however.)

The document, along with other ballot positions, can be found here:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/charter-ietf-anima/

----------------------------------------------------------------------
BLOCK:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I am under the impression that there is a small ambiguity in the charter, which
shouldn't be hard to resolve:

ANIMA work will rely on the framework described in
draft-ietf-anima-reference-model. [...] The three areas of the framework are
   [...] and (3) Intent.

ANIMA will not work on Intent [...] without explicit rechartering.

The first piece seems to allow for working on Intent while the second clearly
not (within the current charter).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure to understand what the following means:

Acceptance of work items by the WG will be scheduled/throttled so that
contributors can target them to enter WG last call after not more than a number
of IETF meeting cycles agreed by the AD.

I tripped over that also when I first read it, but then understood:
the WG will rely on the framework, which includes a set of things.
Not all of those things will be worked on via this charter. In
particular, "intent" is one of the things that won't be.

As I read it, I think the charter is OK. I suppose it could be
clarified this way:

OLD
ANIMA work will rely on the framework described in
draft-ietf-anima-reference-model. Work not related to this framework is welcome
for review, but WG adoption of such work requires explicit rechartering. The
three areas of the framework are (1) the Autonomic Networking Infrastructure
(ANI), (2) Autonomic Functions (AF) built from software modules called
Autonomic Service Agents (ASA) and (3) Intent.

NEW
ANIMA work will rely on the framework described in
draft-ietf-anima-reference-model, though only parts of the framework are
in scope for this charter, as detailed below. Work not related to
this framework
is welcome for review, but WG adoption of such work requires explicit
rechartering.
The three areas of the framework are (1) the Autonomic Networking Infrastructure
(ANI), (2) Autonomic Functions (AF) built from software modules called
Autonomic Service Agents (ASA) and (3) Intent.

END

As I read it, it means that the working group won't take on so much
work that the work they do take on doesn't get done. Acceptance is
based on negotiating a schedule (based on meeting cycles), and if the
schedule isn't met, new work items can't be accepted.

Deborah Brungard has entered the following ballot position for
charter-ietf-anima-01-05: No Objection

When responding, please keep the subject line intact and reply to all
email addresses included in the To and CC lines. (Feel free to cut this
introductory paragraph, however.)

The document, along with other ballot positions, can be found here:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/charter-ietf-anima/

----------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The sentence in the first paragraph:
"for automated network management and control of
networks that are developed, built and operated by professionals."

I found the wording "operated by professionals" confusing.
Especially this is the first sentence of the charter.

It seems to be a cut and paste reversal from the reference model
document where it says:
"loosely referred to as "professionally managed" networks".

The reference model differentiates between managed networks and
unmanaged networks. It further differentiates for managed
networks between traditional (non-autonomic) networks and
autonomic networks. The interpretation is the network does
need to managed (by professionals), and then one can introduce
autonomic management, due to the additional security and trust
issues the autonomic model does not cover.

Suggest to use the wording of the reference model document to
give context or (I prefer) reuse the wording in the original charter
for the first two paragraphs as the original was very clear in scope
of use.

Barry,

I believe your interpretation is correct.

COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that I support Martin's BLOCK with respect to the support or
absence of support of "Intent".

Deborah's question about 'by professionals' is indeed a very valid point.
