Does anyone know of any issues with placing Yahoo! Media RSS extensions
(which seem to fit the requirments for Atom extensions to me) inside an
Atom feed? Secondarily, do feed readers in general recognize MRSS
inside either Atom or RSS? Looking for field experience/implementor
intentions here.

Thanks,

I'm not sure if there are any feed readers that support MRSS in Atom but
I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. A while back I implemented
minimal support for the MRSS extensions in Abdera with very little
difficulty.

To the best of my knowledge, feed readers don't even recognize MRSS inside
RSS feeds. It probably depends what features of the spec you're intending to
use, but back when I was testing enclosure support I couldn't find a single
feed reader that recognised MRSS media:content elements (having tested more
than 20).

Add to that the fact that the spec is buggy, so the feeds that do use it
often aren't compatible with each other; and most of what MRSS offers can
already be achieved quite adequately using existing RSS/Atom elements (with
the added bonus that feed readers will actually see the data). IMHO it's
probably not worth bothering with.

That said, I know there are feed libraries that support it to some extent
(in RSS at least) so there must be some people using it.

Regards
James

That's a big assumption. The only reason I added it to Abdera was to
prove a point about being able to support RSS extensions in Atom. I
haven't come across any implementation that makes use of the extensions.

CaRP partially supports Media RSS in RSS (it doesn't directly support
Atom at all, and Grouper, the companion script that converts Atom to
RSS for it doesn't yet have Media RSS support, though I may add it in
the next update). It only looks at elements pointing to images
(@type="image/*") and their types, heights and widths. I added this
in response to user requests--primarily, I believe, for use with
Flickr feeds.

A year or two ago there was discussion of doing an IETF working group
to add Media RSS (or equivalent) extensions to Atom.

Is there any interest in reviving that effort?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Atom Publishing Format and Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : The Atom Publishing Protocol
	Author(s)	: B. de Hora, J. Gregorio
	Filename	: draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-13.txt
	Pages : 59
	Date : 2007-2-13

The Atom Publishing Protocol (APP) is an application-level protocol
for publishing and editing Web resources. The protocol is based on
HTTP transport of Atom-formatted representations. The Atom format is
documented in the Atom Syndication Format [RFC4287].

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-13.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-13.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-13.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Hmmm, didn't we have agreement to change 'application/atomserv+xml' to
'application/atomsvc+xml'?

I was going to say ship it but I noticed one major problem: the
app:categories element is defined twice: once in section 7 and again in
8.2.5. I realize that these are different contexts (e.g. categories as a
standalone doc vs. an element in the service doc) but it's entirely
unnecessary to define 'em in both places.

A consensus call was asked for [1]
but I didn't receive one from
the chairs, even after asking off-list,
so I left it unchanged.

Re the type parameter (sec. 12): I earlier suggested to define file
extensions for feed and entry documents, and that suggestion got some
+1s and no objections.

Let me reiterate points:

1. If the "different processing models" models require we be able to
distinguish feeds from entries by mime types, then i we'll want to be
able to distinguish them using file extensions. RFC 4288 has a place
for you to fill it in.

2. When you do that exercise you'll see that no existing software will
be able to map the mime type to the correct file extension. Existing
software can choose a file extension based on the major type/subtype
pair -- it will not parse out parameters looking for one named "type".
The transformation is not reversible -- we can go from file extensions
to mime types but not the other way.

3. There will be no such problem if you simply choose a new subtype
to describe entry documents.

Hugh

All,

As a general FYI, IBM just filed a blanket IPR disclosure [1] relating
to the activity of the Atompub WG. Before any misinformation starts
going around about this I thought it would be a good idea to give y'all
a heads up.

As of right now IBM has NO KNOWN patents or applications for patents
that read on the Atom specs. However, as is well known, IBM has a
massive IPR portfolio and it would take a very long time and cost a lot
of money for us to dig through 'em all to know for certain. Rather than
spend the time and energy doing that, IBM has agreed to a blanket
commitment to Royalty Free terms for any IPR that reads on the Standards
Track specifications produced by the atompub Working Group.

Again, I want to reiterate that there are no patents we are currently
aware of nor are there any applications in progress that we are
currently aware of.

There are basically two reasons we are doing this:

1. We think the Atom Syndication Format and the Atom Publishing Protocol
are really important.

2. We want anyone to be able to implement Atom without any fear of
patent hell (and we're really hoping that others agree).

I must add that I am not a IPR expert by any stretch of the imagination.
If you have questions, please direct them to me and I will answer what
I can or I will forward them on to our IP Law experts.

- James

I'd like to add multiple links to my feed for both the current version=20
of the story and the permalink. E.g.

Matt Mullenweg has released Wordpress 2.1.1 and 2.0.9.

     <content type=3D"xhtml">

id=3D"February_22_2007_30633" class=3D"2007-02-22T09:31:33Z">

     <link href=3D"http://www.cafeconleche.org/#February_22_2007_30633"/>
     <link rel=3D"permalink"=20
href=3D"http://www.cafeconleche.org/oldnews/news2007February22.html#Febru=

In particular is "rel=3D'permalink'" a reasonable way to do this? Might i=
t=20
make sense to register current and permalink values for the rel=20
attribute in the IANA Registry of Link Relations? Or something like them?

By the way, http://www.iana.org/assignments/relation/ is 404. This is=20
referenced in the Atom 1.0 spec. It doesn't really need to be resolved,=20
but it would be nice to put something there.

Interesting. http://www.iana.org/assignments/link-relations.html is the

Both of those would probably be best described as "alternate" links.
The second one in particular is what "alternate" was intended to be
used for. However, RFC 4287 contains the following:

o atom:entry elements MUST NOT contain more than one atom:link
element with a rel attribute value of "alternate" that has the
same combination of type and hreflang attribute values.

So you couldn't keep both as "alternate" links. In my opinion, you
should use the second one (the longer lasting one) only, and omit the
first (which is going to become invalid as soon as the entry falls
off the page anyway -- anyone who used it to get to your page and
bookmarked it, and anyone who follows it from a cached copy of your
feed isn't going to be able to find the entry without a lot of
needless digging through your archives). You should have a link to
http://www.cafeconleche.org/ at the feed level. While that won't
link directly to that entry, it'll get people to it as long as it's
on that page.

>=20

Furthermore, a link element with no explicit rel attribute is assumed to=20
be an alternate link, though I think this counts against the maximum of=20
1 given above.

Consequently I suspect (though have not yet tested) that at least some=20
feed readers pick the alternate link as the default when there's more=20
than one. I suspect others pick the first in document order.

Does anyone know how feed readers actually do choose among multiple=20
possible links in an entry?

Last I had checked (last spring) it was a mess. Some readers picked the
first alternate link in the document; some readers picked the last
alternate link in the document; some readers picked the first link in
the document regardless of it's rel value; some readers picked the last
link in the document regardless of rel value; one reader would even
completely ignore atom:source elements in the entry and would choose
links from that depending on where the atom:source was placed in the
entry. Hopefully it's gotten better since but I don't know for sure.

It should be `rel=3D"alternate"`.

What=E2=80=99s the purpose of the `current` link? Is there ever a case
where it would be bad to send the reader to the permanent
location of the item?

It doesn't need to be resolved at all. Given the technical abilities
of IANA, putting "something" there (or at
<http://www.iana.org/assignments/relation/self> and so on) is
probably worse than a definitive 404.

Note that http://www.iana.org/assignments/link-relations/{relation}
resolves to documentation for relations current, first, last, next,
payment, and previous.

Yes, for some definitions of "bad". First of all many sites want to=20
direct a user to the main page, and then have them click through to the=20
full article (more space to show ads, more hits).

Secondly, the permalink URLs don't necessarily exist (yet). The main=20
URLs do.
