A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Atom Publishing Format and Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : The Atom Publishing Protocol
	Author(s)	: B. de Hora, J. Gregorio
	Filename	: draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-14.txt
	Pages : 64
	Date : 2007-3-6

The Atom Publishing Protocol (APP) is an application-level protocol
for publishing and editing Web resources. The protocol is based on
HTTP transfer of Atom-formatted representations. The Atom format is
documented in the Atom Syndication Format [RFC4287].

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-14.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-14.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-14.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

I'd like to represent bookmarks using Atom, so that I can manipulate
them using the Publishing Protocol.

I discussed this briefly with Aristotle on IRC. He has an XSLT which
transforms del.icio.us into Atom [1]; (the important bit of) the entries
it produces look like this:

The Atom Syndication Format

An alternative to RSS2.

    <link href=3D"http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4287"/>
    <category term=3D"rfc"/>

(I was thinking along the same lines, but using content/@src instead of
link/@href.)

But he (and now I) is not entirely happy with this solution.=20

Linking to the RFC as an alternate representation of the entry suggests
that the entry and the RFC issue from the same source. (ie. if the
entry appears in a feed that lists me as an author it implies that
RFC4287 was written by me)

So, what's the right way?

For Lotus Connections we're representing bookmarks as....

...

...

This works for everything we need.

I'm not sure whether they're doing it "the right way" or not, but
blogmarks.net is APP to manipulate bookmarks; that may be worth checking
it.

For the purpose of discussion, here=E2=80=99s how I=E2=80=99d do that now=
:

The Atom Syndication Format

        <link href=3D"http://del.icio.us/url/longhashvaluehere"/>
        <link rel=3D"related" href=3D"http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4287"/>
        <content type=3D"xhtml"><div xmlns=3D"...">
            <a href=3D"http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4287"/>The Atom Syndica=
tion Format:
            An alternative to RSS2.

        <category term=3D"rfc"/>

It bugs me to repeat the link in the content, but the all-around
absence of support for `related` links requires this sort of hack
to make the feed useful with today=E2=80=99s aggregators. Even then, such
a feed would not be useful as a Live Bookmark in Firefox.

Oh yeah, they do. The bookmark is a `related` link, the
`alternate` link points at a page for the link on Blogmarks
itself, and the description, if any, is in `content`. Just as
it should be. They don=E2=80=99t even throw crappy aggregators a bone
by duplicated the bookmark as a link in the content, which is
just as well.

I'm assuming that since there was no additional expressed interest in
moving forward with the Atom autodiscovery draft that it's not going to
go anywhere. My current intention is to go ahead and let it expire
again without any further modifications.

There were strong suggestions at the time, I think, that this was part
of HTML and should belong to the WHAT-WG.

So is there a WHAT-WG document to look at?

Also, is there a standard way to discover the collection associated with
a feed? (Given that, if there is an IETF or WHAT-WG way to discover
feeds, there's an obvious way to discover collections... but I'm not
clear on what that would be. I do think that collection autodisco is
important.)

An app:collection element can appear within atom:feed and atom:source
elements.

please remember that there may be multiple collections collated into one
feed ... and that various members of one collection may be represented in
many different feeds.

it's not 1:1.

I have posted an updated version of the Atom Bidi Draft. The only
significant difference is a notice about direction guess algorithms.

  http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-snell-atompub-bidi-03.txt

I have implemented support for this specification in Abdera and in IBM's
updated internal blogging environment.

The specification adds a new attribute "dir" to the set of common
attribute attributes within the Atom namespace. The dir attribute
specifies the default directionality of language-sensitive text within
an Atom document.

example,

  ...

At this point, I intend to request a formal last call on the document
and recommend it for publication as an experimental or informational draft.

Feedback is requested.

- James

It is not year clear if there has been enough independent implementation
of the specification to justify publishing it as a proposed standard.

James,

Why are you going to recommend that for publication as an experimental or informational draft, but not a Proposed Standard?

There is no need for implementations when going to Proposed Standard
(of course, they never hurt). There is a well-defined need when going
from Proposed Standard to Draft Standard, but that's way in the future.

I don't think we are in a hurry to move the draft to an RFC, so, can the draft be held in the "Draft" stage and issue a call for implementations? The future of the draft should be based on the implementation reports received.

I'd be fine with this also. There's no immediate rush for this but it
would be excellent if implementors could start taking a look at it.
