Quick summary: I'm thinking that authentication/authorization and RSS/Atom feeds present an ideal test case for delegation to automated services. How should OpenID be extended to handle this case? Could we work through a specfic use case where (say) Bloglines started accepting OpenIDs and was able to bootstrap from that to being able to retrieve, store, and present private feed data? I think it's a useful constrained delegation problem that would help shed light on other problems as well. This might be of interest only to a subset of people, and I'm definitely not proposing anything involving 2.0 core at this point. However, the one in HTML allows the value of the attribute to be either "ltr" or "rtl", the empty string leads to extra cost in transforming Atom to HTML. In additional, dir="" can be replaced by not using any "dir" attribute in the element. So, I don't think there is a need to allow dir="". One of the arguments in favor of the empty string is to allow the directionality of entry metadata to be set without affecting the default directionality of the content... e.g., {rtl text} ... <p>{no base direction}</p> Here, the HTML content could have come from anywhere and may not necessarily be under the control of whatever piece of code generated the entry. It originally had no explicitly established directionality. Without the dir="", however, it would automatically inherit the dir="rtl" from the containing entry, which significantly and wrongly changes the semantics of the html content. So far there = are only two directionalities allowed, left-to-right and right-to-left. I= n the example, the directionality of atom:entry is "rtl", there is no rea= son for the author to reset the directionality with an empty string. On the other hand, I don't think always allowing direction guessing is go= od since guessing is not allowed in HTML and XHTML content. If I'm understanding things correctly, you would lose the ability to use the dir attribute on the root of the feed, because there would be no way of overriding it for feed items whose directionality was unknown. Not that that's the end of the world. I just want to be sure that you realise you'd be losing that functionality. I'm aware of this side effect. The question is whether or not this is an issue. It basically is going to come down to defaults; that is, if no direction is specified, and the direction cannot be determined from some other means, can I safely assume a default value of "ltr".. in which case, I can specify dir="rtl" at the feed level, and throw in a dir="ltr" on entries that otherwise did not have any directionality specified. If that is an acceptable behavior (which I think it might be) then there is no problem dropping the empty string value. Noone was pressed to scratch an itch, though, so it did not drive any coding and thus nothing much ever came of it. I'm sure you could do something similar for lists of feeds very quickly. Fwiw I looked at OPML for this last year, and concluded: - it wouldn't support i18n cleanly - it wouldn't support large text blocks cleanly - all that escaping due to attributes would be annoying to people downstream (generally putting all content into attributes is silly) - it's too arbitrary in terms of extension - when you show people XML instead of (X)HTML, it becomes an IT project instead of a quick win - not requiring anything other than a browser to look at some content is compelling. * btw, you can add "/entry.xml" to a URL underneath "/categories" on that site and get the content as an Atom entry. It's backed by Plone. As I understand it, the RSS Advisory Board was pushing for the use of that url because the Harvard site was neglected and often not working. Dave never endorsed that url though, and has since done a lot of work setting up a new site for the spec, which is probably what you should be using.
