Description of Working Group:

The BFCPBIS working group is chartered to specify a revision of BFCP
(RFC 4582) to support using both TCP and UDP as transports. The current
version of BFCP only supports TCP, which when both endpoints are behind
NATs or firewalls, has a lower success rate than using the ICE
techniques with a UDP based transport for BFCP. The need for video
endpoints to work in these types of environments is driving a strong
need to support a UDP based transport as well as TCP.

This WG will create a revision of RFC 4582 which adds optional
support for UDP to BFCP. The security when using UDP will be based on
DTLS. The updated protocol will use an existing approach (e.g., stop
and wait with a single outstanding transaction) to provide a
reliable, congestion safe, and TCP friendly transport.

In addition to providing a way for dealing with the reliable delivery
of client-initiated transactions, the updated protocol will also be
able to deliver server-initiated transactions reliably when
needed. The WG will research the size of messages used and decide if
fragmenting a request or response over multiple UDP packets is
required. The new protocol will be backwards compatible with RFC
4582 when used in TCP mode.

The BFCPBIS WG will coordinate closely with the MMUSIC WG to create a
revision of RFC 4583 specifying how BFCP is signaled in SDP so that it
supports UDP as well as TCP transports. This WG would ask the MMUSIC WG
to add a milestone to create a revisions of RFC 4583 to address
signaling the use of UDP in SDP. The WG will coordinate with
International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC) and other
industry fora.

Goals and Milestones:

April 2012 Draft revision of RFC 4582 to IESG

Hi,

My Colleagues and I have a proposal for an BFCP extension that enables
end-points to perform Media Stream Selection. This is primarily targeted
at centralized conferencing where an RTP mixer provides one or more
streams based on the selection or mixing process of incoming streams.
This extension would enable the end-point to have dynamic control over
what media streams are included in the mix or selection by explicitly
including, excluding or going back to mixer based selection.

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-westerlund-dispatch-stream-selection/

The goal from our perspective would be to get the work chartered in
BFCPbis WG.

If you have input on this, please provide comments in the dispatch WG.
Note (reply-to set for dispatch)

Cheers

Magnus Westerlund

(As WG cochair)

Just to be absolutely clear on this (I know Magnus is fully aware of this).

Until and unless such a change to our charter is proposed and agreed, discu=
ssion of this draft should occur on the dispatch list.

This list and working group should concentrate on progressing our existing =
chartered work.

I do however encourage you to discuss it in the appropriate place.

Keith

There is an inconsistency in draft-sandbakken-dispatch-bfcp-udp-03 in
terms of its recommendations regarding DTLS connection establishment.
Section 4.10. Lower-Layer Security (7) currently reads:

Which party, the client or the floor control server, acts as the
TLS/DTLS server depends on how the underlying TCP/DTLS connection
is established. For example, when the TCP/DTLS connection is
established using an SDP offer/answer exchange [RFC4583], the
answerer (which may be the client or the floor control server)
always acts as the TLS/DTLS server.

This extends the existing text in RFC 4582 to cover DTLS as well.
However, section 5.3. Security Considerations (10) of
draft-sandbakken-dispatch-bfcp-udp-03 reads:

Append to the first paragraph, "Furthermore, when using DTLS over
UDP, considerations for its use with RTP and RTCP are presented in
[RFC5763]. The requirements for the offer/answer exchange, as listed
in Section 5 of that document, MUST be followed."

This conflicts with what was stated in section 4.10, as the
recommendations for DTLS connection establishment in RFC 5763 are not
the same as those provided in RFC 4583 for TLS connection establishment.

The proposed rewording of the text in section 4.10 of
draft-sandbakken-dispatch-bfcp-udp-03 is as follows:

Which party, the client or the floor control server, acts as the
TLS/DTLS server depends on how the underlying TLS/DTLS connection
is established. For a TCP/TLS connection established using an SDP
offer/answer exchange [RFC4583], the answerer (which may be the
client
or the floor control server) always acts as the TLS server. For a
UDP/DTLS connection established using the same exchange, either
party
can be the DTLS server depending on the setup attributes
exchanged,
      as defined in [RFC5763].

Cheers,
Charles

Hi,

Another option for the fragmentation may be to send BFCP over UDP as an RTP
payload. In this case you can fragment and reassemble using the RTP header
seq number and flag. This will also solve the issue of multiplexing with
STUN

There was a question raised by Hadriel during the WG session concerning
the first FloorRequestStatus getting lost. I provided a partial answer
to this during the session but took the action item to follow up on the
list regarding the details. Here is what is currently in the draft:

A server-initiated request (e.g. a FloorStatus with an update from
the
floor control server) received by a participant before the initial
FloorRequestStatus message that closes the client-initiated
transaction that was instigated by the FloorRequest MUST be treated
as superseding the information conveyed in any delinquent response.
As the floor control server cannot send a second update to the
implicit floor status subscription until the first is acknowledged,
   ordinality is maintained.

I believe this addresses the concern.

Cheers,
Charles

(As WG cochair)

At the bfcpbis meeting in Taipai a hum was taken in support of adopting=20

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-sandbakken-dispatch-bfcp-udp/=20

As this draft was resubmitted quite late, it maybe did not give time for pe=
ople with alternative thoughts to potentially submit their own ideas. In an=
y case the call in the Taipai face to face meeting has to be endorsed on th=
e mailing list. We will plan to start that confirmation call on Monday 28th=
November (depending on the results of the call below).

In the meantime this is a call (and an opportunity) for those people who ha=
ve alternative ideas for solving the bfcpbis charter problem to either post=
a draft or post to the mailing list, with their alternative ideas. Please =
do this by Friday 25th November 2011.=20

If you would like to do this, but feel you will miss this deadline by a few=
days, please inform the working group chairs of your intention (bfcpbis-ch=
airs@tools.ietf.org), along with the dates you consider you can manage, and=
we will adjust the schedule accordingly.

This call also applies if you would like to submit alternative material to =
just part of the above draft.

Regards

Keith

(As working group cochair)

In support of our milestone

Apr 2012 Draft revision of RFC 4582 to IESG

it is proposed to adopt:

http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-sandbakken-dispatch-bfcp-udp-03.txt

as a draft text for a working group document. An indicative call was alread=
y supporting of this in the face to face meeting.

Please respond if you either support or do not support the adoption of this=
text as the basis for the working group draft.

Please also respond if you consider there are specific sections that you co=
nsider need more work before adoption. We can leave these sections out (or =
replace them with a drafting note).

A reasonable criteria on which to base your judgement is whether the propos=
ed text form a better basis for moving the discussion forward on any partic=
ular issues than a blank sheet of paper (or the electronic equivalent).

Please respond by Tuesday December 13th 2011.

Regards

Keith

Draft-sandbakken is structured as a patch to RFC 4582. I support adopting =
RFC 4582 as patched by draft-sandbakken as the WG item.

Subject: [bfcpbis] Consensus call for the adoption of text

Regards

Keith
