Hi Folks,

This goes back to a comment I made at the mic during the first BIER WG =
meeting.

The current focus is to support a BitString length of 256, and it looks =
like all vendors participating will be able to support this value. =
However, it does seem useful to support lower values in case a network =
has fewer edge nodes then 256. If a network has no more than 64, why =
send a BitMask length of 256? Also, if in the future routers will =
support higher value than 256, say 512, its useful that these routers =
support 256 in order to be interoperable with older routers.

What I=E2=80=99m suggesting is modify the BIER architecture draft to =
make it mandatory for a BIER router to support all possible value =
BitString lengths, below its maximum, as defined in the architecture =
draft. This does not have to be on by default, but enabled by =
configuration.

Comments?

Thx,

Ice.

Dear Authors, et.al,
in Dallas we had good discussion of BIER Ping and Traceroute work. We, auth=
ors of the BIER Ping, believe that OAM payload definition is more in place =
in the draft-ietf-bier-mpls-encapsulation rather than in draft-kumarzheng-b=
ier-ping. If you would kindly add OAM to list of Protocol values defined in=
the BIER Encapsulation draft, then we'll gladly reference it in BIER Ping =
and other BIER OAM docs.
And couple comments:

* noticed that list of protocol values is not consecutive - 1, 2, 3=
, 4, ..., 6 (5 is not used);

* I think that "This document has no actions for IANA." is not accu=
rate as the BIER Encap draft does define set of Protocol values.

* BIER Header has Reserved field of 16 bits long. Would you kindly =
consider splitting it and creating 8 bit-long Flags field, obviously mainta=
ined by IANA through a new sub-registry, and thus leaving 8 bits in the Res=
erved field for any possible use in the future? At least two-bit flags woul=
d be used by passive performance, loss and delay, measurement method known =
as marking.

Your comments, questions always greatly appreciated.

                Regards,
                                Greg
