I do not support adoption of this document by the WG at this time.

The document appears to have some fundamental flaws, mentioned in my
message ("Questions on draft-eckert-bier-te-arch-01") to this list on
August 27. I'd like to see the issues addressed before the document is
adopted.

I let this roll to 4 weeks to be sure some of the contributors had their
say as well. And it's unanimous! Time to adopt this draft as a WG item.
Will the authors please edit/submit with the name change and the chairs
will approve.

Thanks!,
Greg

Hi Folks,

BIER can eliminate explicit multicast-specific tree building protocol and p=
er-flow multicast forwarding state. If we want to use BIER as underlay tech=
nology for VXLAN network, i am wondering what's the suitable encapsulation?=
The possible solutions are as follows:

1. Encap: Ethernet header+BIER header+VXLAN header+Payload.

BIER header is used as outer tunnel header, the next part is VXLAN header(=
including VN ID), then the payload is inner most. The BIER header is used =
to carry overlay BUM traffic, the regular VXLAN outer IP header is used to =
carry Unicast traffic.

At least one bit should be added to BIER header to identify the next part i=
s VXLAN header.

2. Encap:Ethernet header+BIER header+Payload. Each VN ID corresponds to one=
network topology, each NVE in one topology has one unique Bitstring index.=
When egress NVE receives BIER header encapsulated traffic, it can find the=
VN ID corresponds to the Bitstring.

I also want to know are there any other possible solutions? What's the sugg=
ested encapsulation for NVO3 BIER application?

Your comments and discussions are appreciated.

Thanks,

weiguo

Hi Weiguo,

It seems straightforward to use the protocol field within the BIER header t=
o indicate the payload type of a BIER packet (e.g., MPLS, IP, VXLAN, VXLAN-=
GPE, GRE/NVGRE, GENEVE, GUE).

Best regards,
Xiaohu

Subject: [Bier] How to use BIER as the underlay technology for NVO3 network

Thanks,

weiguo

Subject: [Bier] How to use BIER as the underlay technology for NVO3 network

Thanks,

weiguo

[Xiaohu] Agree. You may be interested to read this draft (https://tools.iet=
f.org/html/draft-xu-bier-encapsulation-02) which describes a non-MPLS encap=
sulation for BIER.

Another related question, for BIER Over Ethernet, one unique Ethernet type =
is needed to identify BIER header is included. However, currently we don't h=
ave the Ethernet Type.

[Xiaohu] As for the non-MPLS encapsulation, I agree with you that we need a=
n Ethertype code for BIER (see section 4 of https://tools.ietf.org/html/dra=
ft-xu-bier-encapsulation-02#page-4). As for the MPLS-based encapsulation, t=
he EtherType code for MPLS is enough.

Best regards,

Xiaohu

This draft is a work item of the Bit Indexed Explicit Replication Working Group of the IETF.

Abstract:
Bit Index Explicit Replication (BIER) is a new multicast forwarding
architecture which doesn't require an explicit tree-building protocol
and doesn't require intermediate routers to maintain any multicast
state. BIER is applicable in a multi-tenant data center network
environment for efficient delivery of Broadcast, Unknown-unicast and
Multicast (BUM) traffic while eliminating the need for maintaining a
huge amount of multicast state in the underlay. This document
describes BGP extensions for advertising the BIER-specific
information. These extensions are applicable in those multi-tenant
data centers where BGP instead of IGP is deployed as an underlay for
network reachability advertisement. These extensions may also be
   applicable in other scenarios.

There's also a htmlized version available at:
