Hi folks,

with the 51st IETF Meeting in London coming up in August, we need
to decide if there is any work for the Bridge-MIB WG to do.

So I have made a list of the MIB objects I think we need to define
to support the management requirements from the recent IEEE 802.1t,
IEEE 802.1u, IEEE 802.1v and IEEE 802.1w standards.

There should be an Internet-Draft to cover these MIB objects in a
few weeks. In the meantime, I hope this gets you thinking about it.

Your feedback and support are welcome.

-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --
New interpretation for existing objects from the Bridge MIB (RFC 1493):
-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --

dot1dStpPriority
Permissible values are 0-61440, in steps of 4096.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1t clause 8.10.2, Table 8-4, clause 14.3."

dot1dStpPortPriority
Permissible values are 0-240, in steps of 16.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1t clause 8.10.2, Table 8-4, clause 14.3."

dot1dStpPortPathCost
The permissible values must be extended to 1-200,000,000.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1t clause 8.10.2, Table 8-5."

dot1dStpTimeSinceTopologyChange
For RSTP, this reports the time since the tcWhile timer for
any port on this Bridge was non-zero.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1w clause 14.8.1.1."

dot1dStpTopChanges
For RSTP, this reports the count of times that there have
been at least one non-zero tcWhile timer on this Bridge.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1w clause 14.8.1.1."

-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --
New objects that apply to Spanning Tree on the Bridge:
-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --

dot1dStpVersion
The administratively assigned version of the IEEE 802.1
Spanning Tree protocol to be used by this Bridge. The
default value for this object is 2, for RSTP support. The
only other currently permissible value is 0, for STP
version 0 support. It is expected that further values will
be defined for future IEEE 802.1 standards.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1w clause 14.8.1, 17.12, 17.16.1."

dot1dStpPathCostDefault
The version of the Spanning Tree default Path Costs that are
to be used by this Bridge. A value of stp8021d1998(1) uses
Path Costs from IEEE Std. 802.1D-1998. A value of
stp8021t2000(2) uses Path Costs from IEEE Std. 802.1t.
REFERENCE "Not defined by IEEE 802.1."

-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --
New objects that apply to Spanning Tree on each port of the Bridge:
-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --

dot1dStpPortAdminEdgePort
The administratively assigned Edge Port state. This object
may take the value TRUE, indicating that this port is assumed
to be an Edge Port, or FALSE, indicating that this port
should not be assumed to be an Edge Port.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1t clause 14.8.2."

dot1dStpPortOperEdgePort
The operationally determined Edge Port state. The value TRUE
indicates that this port was administratively assumed to be
an Edge Port, and there has not been another Bridge detected
as being connected to it. FALSE indicates that this port was
either not administratively assumed to be an Edge Port, or
there has been another Bridge detected by this port.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1t clause 14.8.2."

dot1dStpPortProtocolMigration
A boolean value. When operating in RSTP (version 2) mode,
writing TRUE to this object forces the Bridge to try using
version 2 BPDUs on this port. When operating in STP (version
    0) mode, writing TRUE to this object has no effect. Writing
FALSE to this object has no effect. This object always
    returns FALSE when read.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1w clause 14.8.2.4, 17.26."

dot1dStpPortAdminPointToPoint
A value indicating whether a port is administratively defined
to be treated as a point-to-point connection to another
system. The value ForceTrue indicates this port should be
considered to have a point-to-point link. The value
ForceFalse indicates this port should be considered to have a
shared media link. The value Auto indicates this port should
be considered to have a point-to-point link if it is an
Aggregator and all of its members are aggregatable; or if the
MAC supports auto-negotiation and it has been determined to
    operate in full duplex mode.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1w clause 6.4.3, 14.8.2."

dot1dStpPortOperPointToPoint
A boolean value indicating whether or not a port has been
determined to have a point-to-point connection to another
    system. See dot1dStpPortAdminPointToPoint.
    REFERENCE "IEEE 802.1w clause 6.4.3, 14.8.2."

-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --
New objects that apply to GVRP on each port of the Bridge:
-- ------------------------------------------------------------------ --

This definition was posted on the P8021 and Bridge MIB mailing lists
by Anders SW Christensen, Intel, on 04/05/2000. I added the REFERENCE.

dot1qPortRestrictedRegistration OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX TruthValue

creation of a new dynamic VLAN entry is permitted only
if there is a Static VLAN Registration Entry for the

Great. 1493 could use some work besides being rewritten in SMIv2.

My comments inline but here is some additional items for
consideration.

1. Clarify the indexing for the dot1dBasePortTable. Can
this table be implemented with sparse indexing?
Seems to me Section 3.2.2 has the same problem as ifIndex used to
have.

> ...case a port number will have the same value as the corresponding
> interface's interface number. Port numbers are in the range
 > (1..dot1dBaseNumPorts).

2. During a case where one takes two physical ports from the bridge
and combines them into a link aggregation, what would
be the effect on the above table? Anil R. mentioned sparse indexing
should be allowed.

3. Perform Hotswap out of a bridged port, should the table be reindexed?
If so, how should a management station be notified?

4. We should also have an object to enable/disable the *STP protocol
per port. Many fielded implementations needed this capability.

5. I also think the object dot1dStpPortEnable should be deprecated
in favor of the ifAdminStatus object.

6. Bridge counters do not have an explicitly defined counter discontinuity time object.

7. More features such as port/mac lock?

8. Notifications?

I would not recommend a change of SYNTAX.
I think we can just add conformance statements
that these are the correct values and any value set above these
should result in an appropriate error. Otherwise we need to deprecate
the objects and create new ones.

This will require a new object. One can't extend without breaking
backward compatiblity.

$$ GUARANTEED WAY TO QUICKLY HAVE EXCELLENT CREDIT!! $$

Dear Friend,

Give yourself the ADVANTAGE of enjoying life more with EXCELLENT
CREDIT!! Over the past 8 years I have perfected a system called
the Proven Credit Advantage Program. It's a guaranteed way for
legally getting an excellent credit rating almost instantly.
Here's how:

If you have bad credit you will simply go through my easy 5 step
program to quickly get a new, legal, unblemished credit file and
establish Excellent Credit. If you don't have bad credit, but
want to make your existing credit EXCELLENT, we will go straight
to STEP 5.

Step 1 -
Because no two people in the United States have the same Social
Security Number, Banks and Creditors access your credit file
almost entirely by your SS#. You will not want to change your
Social Security Number because it is extremely difficult to do
so and you need it for your Employment, Taxes and Social
Security Benefits. The FEDERAL PRIVACY ACT OF 1974 clearly
states that only the Government and your employer can force you
to use your SS#. Because of this law you are allowed to legally
use another 9 digit number to use in place of your Social
Security # on credit applications.

The first day you become our client, you will receive your own
number through the Employer Identification Number Program. You
will need us for this because 95% of all Employer Identification
Numbers, although 9 digits, do not look anything like Social
Security Numbers and cannot be used on credit applications.
We will legally get you an Employer Identification Number that
fits in the same range of Social Numbers in use today. Because
the Federal Laws do not require you to give your SS# to anyone
besides your Employer and the Government, you can now legally
use this number in place of your SS# on credit applications.
Remember, your new number will only be used for new credit.

Step 2 -
No two people with the same name have the same mailing address,
so you will need to obtain a new mailing address for use on your
new credit file. A friend, relative or mailbox address in your
area will be perfect.

Step 3 -
No two people with the same name have the same telephone numbers,
so you will also need a new telephone number for use on your
new credit file. A friend, relative, voice mail or pager will
again work perfectly.

Step 4 -
With your new Social Security number, new address and new
telephone number we will open your new credit file. It will now
be totally impossible for any creditor to know anything about
your past credit history.

Step 5-
To guarantee that you will quickly have EXCELLENT CREDIT, we
will assist you in instantly adding UNLIMITED positive
information to your credit file. This is an unknown way of
adding real accounts to your new credit file to give you an
Excellent Credit Rating in less than 15 days. As you know, the
more positive information on your credit file, the more money
banks will lend you. Countless clients of ours have credit lines
over $100,000 because of our Proven Credit Advantage Program!

When we are finished you will receive a copy of your credit
file proving that you now have excellent credit! This will take
less than 15 days. You will now be able to easily qualify for
ANY credit you apply for! To be on the road to EXCELLENT CREDIT
simply send us your name, complete mailing address including
zip code and telephone number (optional), along with a check
or money order payable to American Financial Services Inc.
for $29.95.

Send to:
American Financial Services Inc.
Attn.: Mike Robbins
311 N. Robertson Blvd.
Suite 625
Beverly Hills, CA 90210

All necessary paperwork along with a telephone number to contact
us for assistance will be sent to you priority mailed to you
within 3 business days.

$$$$ RISK FREE DOUBLE YOUR MONEY BACK GUARANTEE!! $$$$

My Proven Credit Advantage Program unconditionally guarantees

Marketing in today's world can be challenging. There is a way
to increase your profits, deliver your message and DRIVE TRAFFIC
to your on-line business almost for free! Our research has found:

Free Classifieds? (They just don't work anymore)
Web Site? (Takes thousands of surfers)
Banners? (Expensive and losing their punch)
Search Engines? (Forget it, unless you're in the top 20)

            S O W H A T D O E S W O R K ?

Although often misunderstood, a different approach to marketing
that has proven to succeed time-after-time is...

           E - M A I L M A R K E T I N G ! !

IT'S A FACT...if you're not using your computer to generate
WEALTH, you're missing out!

* "A gold mine for those who can take advantage of
bulk e-mail programs" -The New York Times

* "E-mail is an incredible lead generation tool"
    -Crains Magazine

* "Blows away traditional Mailing" -Advertising Age

Here's a realistic earnings example:

We will show you how to market a product or service that will
bring a profit of $30. Remember, on the Internet, you can make
money 7 days a week, 24 hours a day... even while you sleep,
orders will come from all over the world!

Orders
Per Day Daily Weekly Monthly Yearly

   1 $ 30 $ 210 $ 930 $ 10,950
   5 $ 150 $ 1,050 $ 4,650 $ 54,750
  10 $ 300 $ 2,100 $ 9,300 $ 109,500

The cleanest, most comprehensive e-mail address list in the
world! We're proud to offer it.

          	O N E O F A K I N D

This is a first. No one has gone to the work it takes to produce
an e-mail address list of this quality.

Here's how we prepare our e-mail lists:

1. We clean and eliminate all duplicates.
2. Next, we use a filter list of 400+ words/phrases to clean even
more.
3. Then, a special filter file is used to eliminate all
undeliverable and "Poisoned" e-mail addresses from the list. Our
EXCLUSIVE system reduced these "poison" addresses to near zero.
You may have seen CD's with 30, 40, 50 million addresses, not only
do they contain many undeliverable addresses, but most are
notorious for millions of these "poisoned" email addresses.
4. And finally, we sorted the list into easy-to-manage
packets of 20,000 addresses in a simple text (.txt) format.
5. All domains have been verified as valid.

WHAT DID WE END UP WITH?

             INTERNET WEALTH BUILDING 2001!
           Over 25 Million Addresses Strong!

With our super clean e-mail address lists you'll send less...and
get better results...

    * Y O U   G E T   W H A T   Y O U   P A Y   F O R *

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Bridge MIB Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Definitions of Managed Objects for Bridges
	Author(s)	: E. Bell et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-bridge-bridgemib-smiv2-00.txt
	Pages : 39
	Date : 26-Jun-01

This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB)
for use with network management protocols in TCP/IP based internets.
In particular it defines objects for managing MAC bridges based on
the IEEE 802.1D-1990 standard between Local Area Network (LAN)
segments. Provisions are made for support of transparent bridging.
Provisions are also made so that these objects apply to bridges
connected by subnetworks other than LAN segments.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-bridge-bridgemib-smiv2-00.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-bridge-bridgemib-smiv2-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-bridge-bridgemib-smiv2-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
