A reminder that we have the next CBOR working group teleconference
tomorrow, 19 Dec, at 18:00 UTC. The WebEx information is below, and the
same information will apply to all meetings.

We'll be using these meetings to review working group document status and
to make progress on the documents by working on open issues. Future
teleconferences are at the same time every second Wednesday until IETF 104:
2, 16, 30 Jan; 13, 27 Feb; 13 Mar. A reminder or cancellation notice will
be posted to the CBOR mailing list before each meeting.

Barry, CBOR WG chair

CBOR teleconference 19 Dec 2018

Present:
Barry Leiba
Carsten Bormann
Jeffrey Yasskin
Paul Hoffman
Sebastian Hans

Regrets:
Francesca Palombini
Laurence Lundblade

CDDL
- Edit has addressed all IESG COMMENTS in his version
- One DISCUSS from Eric still outstanding
- Paraphrase PEG so no normative reference is needed
- Need to confirm that this solves everything

CBORbis
- About 10 issues and 3 pull requests
- Thanks for Jeffrey for his reviews and doing the pull requests
- Need to talk about well-formed and valid
- Current text explains the difference between the two
- Text is changing for rules on validity of tags
- New Req=E2=80=99ts proposed:
  1. An encoder MUST produce only valid items.
  2. A decoder MUST stop and return an error with no data when it
encounters an ill-formed item.
- Req=E2=80=99t 2 is straightforward, but req=E2=80=99t 1 is problematic
=E2=80=A6discussion=E2=80=A6
- Jeffrey to rephrase req=E2=80=99t 1 to make it less problematic
- Editorial: do we need =E2=80=9Cill-formed=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9Cinvalid=
=E2=80=9D as formal terms for
completeness?
- Consensus is no, use =E2=80=9Cnot valid=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9Cnot well-fo=
rmed=E2=80=9D
- Editorial: we have to be more specific about what we call
components, and avoid terms such as =E2=80=9Cparser=E2=80=9D except in only=
 the
general sense
- A number of other editorial improvements=E2=80=A6
- Technical: base64 padding issue; boundaries between basic and extended ty=
pes
- Outside the draft, need to work on test vectors, especially on
failing test vectors
- Should we include some of those in the draft as well?
- Put technical issues into individual threads on the mailing list
- Test vectors may be good fodder for hackathon, with preparation on
the list now
=E2=80=A6discussion of how to get people involved with this=E2=80=A6
- Carsten will use datatracker to check references to CBOR to get a
start on whom to contact
- Jeffrey brings up the issue os =E2=80=9Cill-formed=E2=80=9D vs =E2=80=9Cf=
atally ill-formed=E2=80=9D (pr #41)
- Duplicate map keys, for example=E2=80=A6 discussion of that. Maybe call
that =E2=80=9Cnot valid=E2=80=9D, rather than =E2=80=9Cnot well-formed=E2=
=80=9D?
- Jeffery will start a thread on the mailing list

2 Jan teleconference: cancel because little will happen over the holiday we=
eks.

Under the heading of "Specific Data Models" in the current draft, the spec =
says:

  * Specific data models can also specify what values (including values o=
f different types) are equivalent for the purposes of map keys and encoder =
freedom. For example, in the generic data model, a valid map MAY have both =
0 and 0.0 as keys, and an encoder MUST NOT encode 0.0 as an integer (major =
type 0, {{majortypes}}). However, if a specific data model declares that f=
loating point and integer representations of integral values are equivalent=
, using both map keys 0 and 0.0 in a single map would be considered duplica=
tes and so invalid, and an encoder could encode integral-valued floats as i=
ntegers or vice versa, perhaps to save encoded bytes.

I'm concerned this goes too far by contradicting the JSON/JavaScript data m=
odel. There simply is no way for an encoder written in JavaScript to d=
istinguish between 0.0 and 0.

At a higher level, the idea of developing a CBOR specific data model still =
strikes me as introducing technical risk. I think I understand the (and a=
ppreciate) intent, but if it's going to take a "special data model" for the=
most broadly implemented language on earth perhaps we should consider the =
wisdom of basing CBOR bis on still uncertain data model. Well tested lan=
guage-independent data models exist already, e.g. IDL. Have you considere=
d adopting one of them?
