Referenced liaison: Achieving Packet Network Optimization using DWDM Interfaces (https://datatracker.ietf.org/liaison/1432/)

Body: Hello,

The TEAS, PCE and CCAMP Working Groups would like to thank the Broadband Forum for informing us of your effort on packet-optical networks, and providing the IETF with the opportunity to review and comment on your document and its use of our RFCs.

We have conducted an initial review where we noted the references to IETF RFCs on GMPLS and PCE for satisfying the control requirements.

Below is some preliminary feedback based on this initial review we hope you will find helpful and consider for the document. However, given the recent IETF 94 meeting activity, we regret there was little time to conduct a thorough technical review of the document. We understand the document is in the last call stage of development. If time and the BBF process allows, the CCAMP, PCE and TEAS Working Groups would be happy to conduct a more in depth technical review over the coming weeks. Please let us know if you wish us to proceed with such a review.

As the Broadband Forum progresses its work on "Achieving Packet Network Optimization using DWDM Interfaces", we would greatly appreciate if you keep us informed of any gaps you identify in the RFCs that are needed to satisfy these requirements. Feedback from the BBF on existing and progressing CCAMP, PCE and TEAS work would be greatly appreciated and can be provided via the relevant IETF Working Group mailing list without the need for a formal liaison.

We look forward to your response and our continued communication on this important area of optical networking.

Best Regards,

Daniele Ceccarelli & Fatai Zhang - CCAMP Working Group Chairs
Jonathan Hardwick, Julien Meuric & Jean-Philippe Vasseur - PCE Working Group Chairs
Vishnu Pavan Beeram & Lou Berger - TEAS Working Group Chairs

---------------------------
Preliminary Feedback

---------------------------

Questions:

* In A.2.1, how is the GMPLS communication between the Packet Node and the DWDM Network Element achieved? Is there a specific control interface that is used in your solution? There are a number of possibilities for control channel connectivity available. Perhaps clarifying which are intended would aid understanding and interoperability.

* Are there more details on the management and SDN control aspects between the packet network and the optical network? Additional management and SDN control detail might convey a better understanding of the solution configuration and its operation.

Comments:

* When referring to PCE and related issues, e.g., in [R-26] and [R-27], it seems only stateless PCE (RFC4655) and corresponding PCEP (RFC5440) are included in the current solution. The PCE Working Group is investigating stateful PCE and PCE Initiated LSPs, which are planned to be published in the future. It may be worth specifying which kind of PCE is suggested to be used in the current solution, to differentiate the two. Has RFC 5623 - PCE-based inter-layer MPLS and GMPLS Traffic Engineering been considered? It may be a good reference for this solution.

* In section 4.4 when talking about SDN, Openflow is mentioned as a standard protocol to interact between packet nodes and DWDM nodes. PCE Protocol (PCEP) could be considered as another example, as it is currently used in IETF. RFC 3413 about SNMP, and RFC 4208 about GMPLS UNI are also recommended references.

* In section 4.5, [R-36] uses the term "North-Bound interface" to refer to the interface between Network Elements and the SDN controller. We noted that some commonly use the same term when referring to the interface between the controller and what sits "above" the controller (e.g. another controller or orchestrator). This could lead to unintended misunderstanding. Perhaps a clarification would help avoid misunderstanding.

Document shepherd write-up for

             draft-ietf-ccamp-otn-signal-type-subregistry-02

(1) What type of RFC is being requested (BCP, Proposed Standard,
Internet Standard, Informational, Experimental, or Historic)?
Why is this the proper type of RFC? Is this type of RFC
indicated in the title page header?

This document is requested for publication as a Standards Track document.

This is appropriate because the document describes the extension
of the IANA maintained "OTN Signal Type" subregistry to the
"Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) Signaling
Parameters" registry for the OTN signals defined in [RFC4328] and
[RFC7139] with additional signal types mentioned in ITU-T G.Sup43.

This track is noted in the document header.

(2) The IESG approval announcement includes a Document Announcement
Write-Up. Please provide such a Document Announcement Write-Up.
Recent examples can be found in the "Action" announcements for
approved documents. The approval announcement contains the
     following sections:

Technical Summary:

The International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication
Standardization Sector (ITU-T) has defined normative OTN Signal
Types in G.709. These OTN Signal Types are registered by RFC7139.
The ITU-T has also defined non-normative OTN Signal Types in
G.Sup43. This document registers these additional OTN Signal Types.

Working Group Summary:

This document has been reviewed by the CCAMP working group and
received some comments at IETF meetings and on the mailing list.

There were no problems with consensus for this document.

Document Quality:

The document is concise and provides proper justification for
the extension of the OTN Signal Type registry.

Personnel:

Huub van Helvoort is the Document Shepherd
Deborah Brungard is the Responsible Area Director

(3) Briefly describe the review of this document that was performed
by the Document Shepherd. If this version of the document is
not ready for publication, please explain why the document is
     being forwarded to the IESG.

The document shepherd has reviewed the current revision of the
document and has found nits, see (11).
After addressing these nits he believes it is ready for publication.

(4) Does the document Shepherd have any concerns about the depth
or breadth of the reviews that have been performed?

No concerns.

(5) Do portions of the document need review from a particular or
from broader perspective, e.g., security, operational
complexity, AAA, DNS, DHCP, XML, or internationalization? If
so, describe the review that took place.

No such content.

(6) Describe any specific concerns or issues that the Document
Shepherd has with this document that the Responsible Area
Director and/or the IESG should be aware of? For example,
perhaps he or she is uncomfortable with certain parts of the
document, or has concerns whether there really is a need for
it. In any event, if the WG has discussed those issues and
has indicated that it still wishes to advance the document,
     detail those concerns here.

No such concerns.

(7) Has each author confirmed that any and all appropriate IPR
disclosures required for full conformance with the provisions
of BCP 78 and BCP 79 have already been filed. If not, explain
     why?

The WG chairs chased all authors and contributors for statements
that they had complied with IETF IPR policy. All responded.

(8) Has an IPR disclosure been filed that references this document?
If so, summarize any WG discussion and conclusion regarding the
     IPR disclosures.

No disclosures have been made.

(9) How solid is the WG consensus behind this document? Does it
represent the strong concurrence of a few individuals, with
others being silent, or does the WG as a whole understand and
     agree with it?

See (2).
There has been a good review and there is good consensus on the
document.

(10) Has anyone threatened an appeal or otherwise indicated extreme
discontent? If so, please summarise the areas of conflict in
separate email messages to the Responsible Area Director. (It
should be in a separate email because this questionnaire is
      publicly available.)

No threats or discontent.

(11) Identify any ID nits the Document Shepherd has found in this
      document. (See http://www.ietf.org/tools/idnits/ and the
      Internet-Drafts Checklist). Boilerplate checks are not enough;
this check needs to be thorough.

Fix nits errors:
Security considerations section is not required.

In Abstract
s/[RFC5226]/RFC 5226/

Fix nits warning:
Because G.Sup43 has been approved and published the following
change should be made in section 4.2 (this will also align it
with the reference present in section 1)
OLD:
[GSUP.43] ITU-T, "Proposed revision of G.sup43 (for agreement)",
              February, 2011.
NEW:
[G.Sup43] ITU-T, “Transport of IEEE 10GBASE-R in optical
              transport networks (OTN)”, February, 2011.

(12) Describe how the document meets any required formal review
criteria, such as the MIB Doctor, media type, and URI type
      reviews.

No such reviews needed.

(13) Have all references within this document been identified as
      either normative or informative?

All normative references are identified correctly.
The Informative Reference has been approved and published.

(14) Are there normative references to documents that are not ready
for advancement or are otherwise in an unclear state? If such
normative references exist, what is the plan for their
      completion?

None such.

(15) Are there downward normative references references (see
RFC 3967)? If so, list these downward references to support
the Area Director in the Last Call procedure.

None such.

(16) Will publication of this document change the status of any
existing RFCs? Are those RFCs listed on the title page header,
listed in the abstract, and discussed in the introduction? If
the RFCs are not listed in the Abstract and Introduction,
explain why, and point to the part of the document where the
relationship of this document to the other RFCs is discussed.
If this information is not in the document, explain why the WG
      considers it unnecessary.

No issues.

(17) Describe the Document Shepherd's review of the IANA
considerations section, especially with regard to its
consistency with the body of the document. Confirm that all
protocol extensions that the document makes are associated
with the appropriate reservations in IANA registries. Confirm
that any referenced IANA registries have been clearly
identified. Confirm that newly created IANA registries include
a detailed specification of the initial contents for the
registry, that allocations procedures for future registrations
are defined, and a reasonable name for the new registry has
      been suggested (see RFC 5226).

The IANA considerations section is the most important part of this
document. It is concise and appropriate.

(18) List any new IANA registries that require Expert Review for
future allocations. Provide any public guidance that the IESG
would find useful in selecting the IANA Experts for these new
      registries.

Standard

This document is the product of the Common Control and Measurement Plane
Working Group.

Technical Summary

The International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T)
extended its Recommendations G.694.1 and G.872 to include a new dense wavelength division
multiplexing (DWDM) grid by defining a set of nominal central frequencies, channel spacing's
and the concept of "frequency slot". In such an environment, a data plane connection is switched
based on allocated, variable-sized frequency ranges within the optical spectrum creating what is
known as flexi-grid.

This document reflects recommendations defined by the ITU-T and describes the requirements,
procedures and protocol extensions for RSVP-TE signaling to set up LSPs in optical networks
that support flexi-grid. The I-D using the label definition documented in
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-farrkingel-ccamp-flexigrid-lambda-label.

Working Group Summary

The initial RSVP-TE signaling extensions in support of flexible grid Internet-Draft (I-D) was
published in October 2011, after numerous presentations at CCAMP working group (WG)
meetings and list discussions it has matured over several versions. Key discussion points
included:

+ Traffic Parameters
- Its correct use
+ Grid Value
- To determine how to carry the central frequency & slot width in RSVP-TE
+ Refined to make it consistent with flexible grid framework and label
extension I-Ds
- https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-ccamp-flexi-grid-fwk
- https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-ccamp-flexigrid-lambda-label

The issues above were discussed during IETF meetings and on the mailing list and an
acceptable (by the CCAMP WG) definitions were established. Overall the document has
received broad support from the CCAMP WG during its life.
No objection to progression of the I-D (via the CCAMP mailing list or documented in
CCAMP WG minutes), and especially at Last Call was recorded.

Document Quality

The work has had contributions from a large group of people from multiple people both
from the ITU-T and IETF. Additionally, the work has had external review from the
IDEALIST EU project (http://www.ict-idealist.eu/) that is making multiple inter-operating
implementations of a GMPLS control plane for flexible grid.

Body: Dear IETF Routing Area and Working Group Leaders:

Thank you very much for your timely response to our last liaison concerning our document WT-319 Part B, Achieving Packet Network Optimization using DWDM Interfaces – Physically Separated, Logically Separated. We understand the time constraints you faced with IETF94. We appreciate your effort to send us preliminary feedback on the document despite these constraints and your kind offer to do a thorough technical review of our document. We respect the expertise of the IETF Routing Area and graciously accept your offer.

We discussed and addressed your preliminary feedback in our recent Puerto Vallarta meeting (Nov 16-20). Attached, please find an updated version of the document for your review and comment.
Our next meeting is February 1-6, 2016 in Hong Kong. If possible, we would appreciate your response by January 25, 2016 to help us prepare for our meeting. Please let us know if this time frame is insufficient.

We want to again express our appreciation for your continued consideration and support with this important topic.
