Subject: [Cellar] EBML RFC changed semantics of "default values" and therefore a lot of existing Matroska files

Hey,

I've posted this as an issue[1] in the EBML specification repo, but I feel
it'll get more attention and more input here; hence reposting.

TLDR: existing Matroska files where elements such as the track language
haven't been written need to be interpreted differently according to the
new EBML RFC (before the RFC: track language missing means it's "eng";
after the RFC: missing means it isn't known).

I've verified using the Wayback Machine[2] that right before the website
was updated to match the released RFC the semantics of default values was
as follows:

> Default Values
>
> The default value of an element is assumed when not present in the data
> stream. It is assumed only in the scope of its upper-element (for example
> Language in the scope of the Track element). If the upper element is not
> present or assumed, then the element cannot be assumed.

Note that there is no distinction made for whether an element is mandatory
or not.

Now the RFC turns this into the following:

> 6.1.  Data Size Format
>
> =E2=80=A6
> If an Empty Element has a default value declared, then the EBML Reader
> MUST interpret the value of the Empty Element as the default value.

and

> 11.1.6.4.  minOccurs
>
> =E2=80=A6
> EBML Elements with "minOccurs" set to "1" that also have a default value
> (see Section 11.1.6.8) declared are not REQUIRED to be stored but are
> REQUIRED to be interpreted; see Section 11.1.19.

and the whole section 11.1.19, which only talks about mandatory elements.

So to recap:

* Before the RFC all elements with default values would not have be written
  to the stream.
* After the RFC non-mandatory elements are suddenly handled differently.

This is not just theoretical. Pretty much all Matroska readers out there
treat mandatory and non-mandatory elements the same wrt. default
values. Most popular example is the track language element which is
non-mandatory with a default value of `eng`. Software such as MKVToolNix,
VLC, ffmpeg, mkclean all use the value `eng` if the element isn't present.

In fact, our own published libEBML doesn't handle writing such elements
like the RFC describes either; instead it handles them according to the old
semantics. Here[3] is the issue I filed for it.

The RFC retroactively changes the meaning of nearly all files ever
created. No matter what we might think about how default values should be
handled, such a radical, retroactive change is unacceptable in my
opinion. Unfortunately I didn't realize this during the RFC process, so
yeah, mea culpa =E2=80=94 I fucked this up, too.

mkver remarked that this can be remedied somewhat by changing the Matroska
specification for the affected elements and simply making them mandatory,
thereby bringing their semantics back to what they were before the RFC.

However, that won't work for frozen versions of the Matroska specs
(v1=E2=80=933). Also: it is hella confusing for developers who were used to
mandatory elements working one way for 18 years and now suddenly having to
change their code.

For example, here[4] is me getting confused about the new semantics in our
recent discussion about the semantics of the new track header elements
('hearing impaired' flag etc.).

On the flip side I cannot really think of an advantage of treating
non-mandatory elements with default values differently than mandatory
elements with default values.

So=E2=80=A6 am I way off base here? Did I misunderstand the RFC and the sem=
antics
haven't actually changed? Did they change, and do we keep the semantics as
they are now? How do we communicate the change to the wider developer
community?

If not: how would we go about fixing such an issue (probably by=E2=80=A6 do=
ing
another RFC obsoleting the existing one=E2=80=A6 this was my first RFC, not
familiar with the right process)?

I'm thankful for any kind of input & advice on this.

Kind regards,
mosu

In RFC 8794 Section 11.1.16 we have a XSD Schema file that describes the
XML format to use to describe an EBML format.

The maxOccurs definition in the XSD doesn't match the definition in
11.1.6.5, which is the correct one.

It should be defined as something like this:
   <xs:attribute name="maxOccurs" default="unbounded">
     <xs:simpleType>
       <xs:union>
         <xs:simpleType>
           <xs:restriction base="xs:integer">
             <xs:minInclusive value="0"/>
           </xs:restriction>
         </xs:simpleType>
         <xs:simpleType>
           <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
             <xs:enumeration value="unbounded"/>
           </xs:restriction>
         </xs:simpleType>
       </xs:union>
     </xs:simpleType>
   </xs:attribute>

Dear Cellar,

We are scheduled for our February meeting next Tuesday. In addition to our
usual review of Github open issues, are there any items we need to talk
about, that should be on the agenda?

Best,

Spencer

I thought this meeting is for ffv1 v4 reserved?

I contacted Moritz Bunkus and asked him if he would come back to meet.

If we talk about Matroska or EBML stuff I will send him an email.

There are many new stuff for discussion.

Best regards,

I'm very sorry if I confused people in the last meeting. When the chairs
said, " We agreed at the December meeting that we would have a focused
conversation about FFV1 v4 in our February meeting, and noted then that the
April 2021 date is not realistic.", what I meant (and possibly Michael
meant) was that we needed to reforecast the milestone dates for FFV1 V4,
and that we needed to talk about what was realistic.

I'm expecting to talk about Matroska and about EMBL errata at this meeting.

So, please do contact Moritz!

Best,

Spencer

Best regards,

6. remaining FFV1 issues from DISCUSS
   * IESG ballot positions at
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-cellar-ffv1/ballot/
   * Have we closed on Barry's concerns about section 3.8.1.x? Not quite
yet - we just need to rewrite this section into text, rather than
explaining the bespoke notation we're using.
   * Any remaining comments from any ADs that still need to be addressed?
   * If all of the above, what needs to happen to submit an updated draft?

Jerome, Michael and DR will organize a time to redo the 3.8.1 formula into
more clear pseudo-code.

7. From private e-mail to Spencer, now forwarded to the mailing list: "What
is the canonical procedure to create an "infinite" audio stream, using
~~Opus and~~ FLAC codecs?"

        I have been attempting to locate a site which streams Opus
continuously to test.

I also am interested in the exact opusenc, et al. commands necessary to
achieve creation of live audio streams.

The use cases are implementation of user-defined Web radio station, the
capability to play the "infinite" stream using HTMLAudioElement
(WHATWG/HTML) over HTTP.

("infinite" is quoted here as there is no way to verify infinity; the gist
is playback should not stop; is not seekable).
   *

8. Matroska issues
   * PR #447 has been under a lot of discussion in Github. We're ready to
merge this PR.
   * We're working on code now, so not a lot of changes to the spec this
month.
    * issue about negative delay in ... ?
https://www.reddit.com/r/mkvtoolnix/comments/l4uh6z/audio_delay_working_whe=

9. FLAC issues
   * none other than lack of editor going forward

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Codec Encoding for LossLess Archiving and Realtime transmission WG of the IETF.

        Title           : FFV1 Video Coding Format Version 0, 1, and 3
        Authors         : Michael Niedermayer
                          Dave Rice
                          Jerome Martinez
	Filename        : draft-ietf-cellar-ffv1-20.txt
	Pages           : 58
	Date            : 2021-02-23

Abstract:
   This document defines FFV1, a lossless intra-frame video encoding
   format. FFV1 is designed to efficiently compress video data in a
   variety of pixel formats. Compared to uncompressed video, FFV1
   offers storage compression, frame fixity, and self-description, which
   makes FFV1 useful as a preservation or intermediate video format.

COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks very much for having addressed all my comments, and special thanks for
the work in clearing up the meanings of things in Section 3.8.1.1. I think I
do understand it now, and I think the work you've done in making that happen
has made this a better document.
