Hi all,

Dan Burnett has stepped down as CLUE co-chair due to other time =
commitments. Paul and Roni will be picking up the remaining documents to =
shepherd to completion. This group is in the home stretch so hopefully =
we=E2=80=99ll see the work come to a timely conclusion.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the ControLling mUltiple streams for tElepresence of the IETF.

Title : CLUE Protocol data channel
        Author : Christer Holmberg
	Filename : draft-ietf-clue-datachannel-14.txt
	Pages : 14
	Date : 2016-08-09

Abstract:
This document defines how to use the WebRTC data channel mechanism in
order to realize a data channel, referred to as a CLUE data channel,
for transporting CLUE protocol messages between two CLUE entities.

The document defines how to describe the SCTPoDTLS association used
to realize the CLUE data channel using the Session Description
Protocol (SDP), and defines usage of SDP-based "SCTP over DTLS" data
channel negotiation mechanism for establishing a CLUE data channel.

Details and procedures associated with the CLUE protocol, and the SDP
Offer/Answer procedures for negotiating usage of a CLUE data channel,
are outside the scope of this document.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-clue-datachannel/

There's also a htmlized version available at:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-clue-datachannel-14

A diff from the previous version is available at:
https://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-clue-datachannel-14

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission
until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the ControLling mUltiple streams for tElepresence of the IETF.

        Title : CLUE protocol
        Authors : Roberta Presta
                          Simon Pietro Romano
	Filename : draft-ietf-clue-protocol-09.txt
	Pages : 56
	Date : 2016-08-13

Abstract:
The CLUE protocol is an application protocol conceived for the
description and negotiation of a telepresence session. The design of
the CLUE protocol takes into account the requirements and the
framework defined within the IETF CLUE working group. A companion
document delves into CLUE signaling details, as well as on the SIP/
SDP session establishment phase. CLUE messages flow upon the CLUE
data channel, based on reliable and ordered SCTP over DTLS transport.
Message details, together with the behavior of CLUE Participants
acting as Media Providers and/or Media Consumers, are herein
   discussed.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:

START OF SECURITY<br class=3D"">CONSIDERATIONS SECTION =
**********************************************<br class=3D"">As a =
general consideration, we remark that the CLUE framework (and<br =
class=3D""> related protocol) has been conceived at the outset by =
embracing the<br class=3D""> security-by-design paradigm. =
This entails that a number of<br class=3D""> requirements =
have been identified and properly standardized as<br class=3D""> =
mandatory within the entire set of documents associated with the =
CLUE<br class=3D""> architecture. Among such requirements we =
mention the following: (i)<br class=3D""> always leave space for =
criptography and authentication; (ii) get sure<br class=3D""> that =
all sensitive fields can be protected; (iii) envisage mutual<br =
class=3D""> authentication between CLUE endpoints; (iv) envisage =
the presence of<br class=3D""> authorization mechanisms; (v) =
envisage the presence of native defense<br class=3D""> mechanisms =
against malicious activities such as eavesdropping,<br class=3D""> =
selective modification, deletion, replay (and related =
combinations<br class=3D""> thereof). Hence, security of the =
single components of the CLUE<br class=3D""> solution cannot be =
evaluated independently of the integrated view of<br class=3D""> =
the final architecture.<br class=3D""><br class=3D""> Coming =
to the details of the CLUE protocol, this is an application-<br =
class=3D""> level protocol allowing a Media Producer and a Media =
Consumer to<br class=3D""> negotiate a variegated set of =
parameters associated with the<br class=3D""> establishment of a =
telepresence session. This unavoidably exposes a<br class=3D""> =
CLUE-enabled telepresence system to a number of potential =
threats,<br class=3D""> most of which are extensively discussed in =
the framework document<br class=3D""> [I-D.ietf-clue-framework]. =
The security considerations section of<br class=3D""> the =
mentioned document actually discusses issues associated with the<br =
class=3D""> setup and management of a telepresence session both in =
the basic case<br class=3D""> involving two CLUE endpoints acting, =
respectively, as MP and MC, and<br class=3D""> in the more =
advanced scenario envisaging the presence of an MCU.<br class=3D""><br =
class=3D""> The framework document also mentions that the =
information carried<br class=3D""> within CLUE protocol messages =
might contain sensitive data, which<br class=3D""> SHOULD hence be =
accessed only by authenticated endpoints. Security<br class=3D""> =
issues associated with the CLUE data model schema are discussed =
in<br class=3D""> [I-D.ietf-clue-data-model-schema].<br =
class=3D""><br class=3D""> There is indeed some piece of extra =
information carried by the CLUE<br class=3D""> protocol which is =
not associated with the standard data model and<br class=3D""> =
which exposes information that might be of concern. This =
is<br class=3D""> primarily what gets exchanged during the options =
negotiation phase.<br class=3D""> =46rom the Clue Participant =
state machine, we know that in the OPTIONS<br class=3D""> state =
both parties agree on the version and on the options to be used<br =
class=3D""> in the subsequent CLUE messages exchange phase. =
A malicious<br class=3D""> participant might either try to =
retrieve a detailed footprint of a<br class=3D""> specific CLUE =
protocol implementation during this initial setup<br class=3D""> =
phase, or force the communicating party to stick to a =
non-up-to-date<br class=3D""> version of the protocol which they =
know how to break. Indeed,<br class=3D""> exposing all of =
the supported versions and options could conceivably<br class=3D""> =
leak a bit of information about the specific implementation of =
the<br class=3D""> protocol. In theory an implementation =
could choose not to announce<br class=3D""> all of the versions it =
supports if it wants to avoid such leakage,<br class=3D""> though =
at the expenses of interoperability. With respect to the<br =
class=3D""> above considerations, we nonetheless remark that the =
OPTIONS state is<br class=3D""> only reached after the CLUE data =
channel has been successfully set<br class=3D""> up. This =
ensures that only authenticated parties can exchange<br class=3D""> =
OPTIONS and related OPTIONS RESPONSE messages and hence =
drastically<br class=3D""> reduces the attack surface which is =
exposed to malicious parties.<br class=3D""><br class=3D""> Coming =
to the content of the protocol messages themselves, the CLUE<br =
class=3D""> framework clearly states the requirement to protect =
against threats<br class=3D""> deriving from the presence of a =
malicious agent capable to gain<br class=3D""> access to the CLUE =
data channel. Such a requirement is met by the<br class=3D""> =
CLUE data channel solution described in =
[I-D.ietf-clue-datachannel],<br class=3D""> which ensures =
protection from both message recovery and message<br class=3D""> =
tampering. With respect to this last point, we once again =
remark<br class=3D""> that any implementation of the CLUE protocol =
which claims to be<br class=3D""> compliant with the CLUE =
specification MUST rely on the exchaning of<br class=3D""> =
messages which flow on top of a reliable and ordered SCTP over =
DTLS<br class=3D""> transport channel connecting two CLUE =
Participants.<br class=3D""><br class=3D""> As a final =
consideration, we remark that policy-based management of a<br class=3D""> =
CLUE-compliant telepresence architecture, though not in the scope =
of<br class=3D""> the CLUE WG charter, can easily be realized. =
To the purpose, common<br class=3D""> Role-Based Access =
Control (RBAC) approaches can be leveraged. In<br class=3D""> =
RBAC, the following elements are identified: (i) Users; (ii) =
Roles;<br class=3D""> (iii) Objects; (iv) Operations; (v) =
Permissions. For all of the<br class=3D""> above elements, a =
direct mapping exists onto the main CLUE entities.<br class=3D""> =
As an example, RBAC objects map onto CLUE data model objects and =
RBAC<br class=3D""> operations map onto CLUE protocol operations. =
Future documents can<br class=3D""> define an RBAC framework =
for CLUE, by first focusing on the<br class=3D""> definition of =
roles and then specifying the needed permission policy<br class=3D""> =
sets and role policy sets (used to associate policy permission =
sets<br class=3D""> with specific roles). With these =
policies in place, access to<br class=3D""> information compliant =
with the CLUE data model can be appropriately<br class=3D""> =
controlled. As far as assigning users to roles, the Users in =
the<br class=3D""> RBAC model relate directly to the =
<people> element in the CLUE<br class=3D""> object. =
The <people> element is comprised of <person> =
elements<br class=3D""> representing a specific user in the =
telepresence system. Each<br class=3D""> <person> =
element contains a 'personID' attribute acting as a unique<br class=3D""> =
identifier and a <personType> element describing their role =
in the<br class=3D""> CLUE session ("presenter", "timekeeper", =
"attendee", "minute taker",<br class=3D""> "translator", =
"chairman", "vice-chairman") . Thus, each authorized<br class=3D""> =
user can be associated with a well-defined role in the RBAC =
model.<br class=3D""><br =

I'm just doing a final check as part of my shepherd writeup.

I have a couple of loose ends to clear up:

In section 5 there is a mention of response code 401. But because of
renumbering of response codes that should now be 402.

In section 9 (Schema) the version is set to 0.7. Is it intended that it
be published with that value? Or is the intent to set the version to 1.0
for publication? If so, it needs to happen soon, and AUTH48 is probably
too late.

	Thanks,
	Paul

Re the request below:

ISTM that we ought to have a new url for clue registries. I don't think
they fit well with anything else. For consistency, it probably ought to
be called:

"ControLling mUltiple streams for tElepresence (CLUE) Parameters"

Any other thoughts?

	Thanks,
	Paul

Will you please inform IANA?

I'd appreciate an explanation for the changes in the new version.
Looking at the diff, it appears that the draft has been gutted. I am
guessing this reflects discussions held in Berlin.

	Thanks,

I was not aware of any such discussions so would appreciate an =
explanation as well. The pub req was based on the -07 and I had started =
my AD review on the -07.
