A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the CBOR Object Signing and Encryption WG of the IETF.

Title : Use of the Hash-based Signature Algorithm with CBOR Object Signing and Encryption (COSE)
        Author : Russ Housley
	Filename : draft-ietf-cose-hash-sig-03.txt
	Pages : 22
	Date : 2019-05-10

Abstract:
This document specifies the conventions for using the HSS/LMS hash-
based signature algorithm with the CBOR Object Signing and Encryption
(COSE) syntax. The HSS/LMS algorithm is one form of hash-based
digital signature; it is described in RFC 8554.

This update resolves comments received on Section 1.1, which also lead =
to the inclusion of a reference to Shor's algorithm.

This update also changes the [HASHSIG] reference to point to RFC 8554.

Hi everyone,

I have submitted a new draft on how to use WalnutDSA in COSE, targeting
SUIT as a viable use-case. WalnutDSA is in use for a secure boot
solution now; specifying how to use it in a standard way would help
others leverage the technology (or at least ensure there are no
conflicts with others).

I have tried to follow the framework of the Hash-based signature
integration (with Russ' approval).

Dear all,

Thank you all for your feedback in person or on the list! The WG last call
ended a while ago and the chairs are not aware of any objections and a
number of people have voiced their support for this document to progress
past the WGLC. Therefore, we will start with the Shepherd Write-Up and
proceed to AD Evaluation.

Best regards,
- Matthew and Ivaylo

I'm looking to implement support for sec256k1 in a JWS library. The
specifications for the NIST curves in RFC7518 are all of the form "ECDSA
using <curve> and <hash alg>", which makes it very obvious what's going on.
However, the definitions in this draft don't make mention of the hash
algorithm to be used.

My vague understanding is that the hash algorithm used for ECDSA should be
equal in size with the curve used, so my assumption is that these signatures
are using SHA-256, however I think it would be extremely useful if that were
made explicit in the specification, to prevent any possible confusion.

Thanks,
- Matt

This is a difference between how COSE and JOSE operate.

For JOSE, the hash and curve are specified and fixed.
For COSE, the hash is fixed and the following text exists:

The ECDSA signature algorithm is parameterized with a hash function
(h). In the event that the length of the hash function output is
greater than the group of the key, the leftmost bytes of the hash
   output are used.

I would agree that the document should be updated to reflect the difference
in behavior between the two standards.

Jim
