Subject: [COSE] Comments on draft-ietf-cose-rfc8152bis-struct-07 and =
draft-ietf-cose-rfc8152bis-algs-06

Comments on draft-ietf-cose-rfc8152bis-struct-07 and =
draft-ietf-cose-rfc8152bis-algs-06

General:

 - Minor note: The abstracts of the documents have minor differences and =
the subsections in the introductions have differ orders.

 - As RFC 8610 is published now, shouldn=E2=80=99t the documents be =
updated to match the final CDDL grammar?

[JLS] As far as I know, the grammar does match what is in RFC 8610. =
What I wanted to avoid was a normative dependency on that document.

draft-ietf-cose-rfc8152bis-struct-07:

 - "There has been an increased focus on small, constrained devices"

I think the document should mention constrained radio technologies as =
well

[JLS] I don't see the point to that. This is a small throw away line to =
help provide motivation. Adding a duplicate of the same case does not =
seem to provide any benefits.=20

- "strings" are used in in various places. Should be changed to "byte =
string" or "text string" as CBOR has two types of strings. I have added =
a line to the document terminology section.

[JLS] I just went through the document again and made sure that I was =
consistent. I am always using either "byte string" or "string". The =
latter is used for text strings. I am not sure that=20

- "3. The content of the message. The content is either the plaintext =
or the ciphertext as appropriate."

This seems to only describe encryption. For signatures and MACs it =
would be payload, signature/tag.

[JLS] I would be willing to change plaintext to a different term, but =
payload is way to overloaded to be placed there. While plaintext is =
used in the context of encryption, it is still meaningful here as being =
something that is not the ciphertext and thus is the original text. As =
such it is not inappropriate for signed and mac-ed contexts.

- "structure", "message", "object", "map", "array", "object structure", =
"message structure", "data object", "structure object", "map object", =
"array object", "data structure", "data item", "CBOR structures", "COSE =
structure", "COSE map", "CBOR map", "CBOR object", "COSE object"

There is a large amount of terms used in the documents. I feel that =
they could be defined a bit more. Also, are all of them really needed?
[JLS] I cleaned some of these out.

- OLD "The set of protected header parameters wrapped in a bstr."
NEW "The set of protected header parameters as a map wrapped in a =
bstr."

[JLS] I went with a slightly different wording.

- The draft has quite a lot of text on different types of signatures =
like signatures with message recovery. Would be good to have some =
sentences on signatures with and without state. The text on signatures =
is also missing that they provide data authentication, integrity =
protection, and provides non-repudiation.

[JLS] I don't see that information on stateful signatures is going to be =
relevant here. A stateful signature algorithm does not change how any =
of the encoding/decoding of COSE is done. The only reason why I put in =
the text about message recovery signatures is that this affects how the =
code is written when one of these shows up and knowing in advance that =
it may be a problem is useful.

[JLS] Added some text on Data Origination and Data integrity. As =
previously discussed, non-repudiation is a made up term with no meaning.

- "They provide either no or very limited data origination."
This sentence occurs in several places. The term "data origination" =
seems to not be used very much and also have different meanings.
E.g. the book "Information Security: Dictionary of Concepts, =
Standards and Terms" defines it as
"data origination. In computing, the translation of information =
from its original form into machine readable form or directly into =
electrical signals."

Could we replace "data origination" with "non-repudiation"?
[JLS] from RFC 4949

$ data origin authentication service
      (I) A security service that verifies the identity of a system
entity that is claimed to be the original source of received data.
      (See: authentication, authentication service.)

DISCUSS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I do see the previous discussion in
https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/cose/E6ApKPKlESQQSZwySJAVF1l27OE
but I am still unclear on where exactly we can represent the octet
string that is the HMS-LMS public key. Do we not need to define a COSE
Key Type Parameter (i.e., label) that maps to the public key value? For
reference, the examples in Appendix C.7.1 of RFC 8152 include key/value
pairs with the negative map labels from
https://www.iana.org/assignments/cose/cose.xhtml#key-type-parameters
corresponding to the key type in question.
Hopefully I'm just confused and missing where this is already done, but
marking as a Discuss point in case I'm not. (The linked
cose-wg/Examples seem to be using a JSON structure to describe the input
to the example generation, with the "public" and "private" members of
the "key" that do not seem to correspond to anything that I can find at
https://www.iana.org/assignments/jose/jose.xhtml#web-key-parameters, and
which would in any case not directly apply to the *COSE* usage.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Related to the above Discuss, should we have an explicit statement that we do
not define a way to convey an HSS/LMS private key in a COSE_Key object?
(I think it is correct to not define such a thing, since conveying a
stateful private key is something of a non-sequitur.)

It's not entirely clear to me how much of RFC 8554 we need to duplicate
in order to give the reader an understanding of the signature structure
we're using. A few times while reading Sections 2.x I had to
double-check that I was reading the right document :)

Section 1.1

If large-scale quantum computers are ever built, these computers will
be able to break many of the public-key cryptosystems currently in
use. A post-quantum cryptosystem [PQC] is a system that is secure
against quantum computers that have more than a trivial number of
quantum bits (qubits). It is open to conjecture when it will be

(nit: they're also secure against quantum computers that do have a
trivial number of bits. Yes, I know this is also true about classical
signature algorithms with sufficiently large keys, but the text here is
perhaps not making quite the point we want to make.)

Since the HSS/LMS signature algorithm does not depend on the
difficulty of discrete logarithm or factoring, the HSS/LMS signature
algorithm is considered to be post-quantum secure. The use of HSS/
LMS hash-based signatures to protect software update distribution,
perhaps using the format that is being specified by the IETF SUIT
Working Group, will allow the deployment of software that implements
   new cryptosystems.

In light of the genart reviewer's comments, we could recast this as
"there is desire have HSS/LMS-based signatures available to protect
software update distribution, including from the IETF SUIT Working
Group" to place the focus on the desire, which is more easily fixed in
time, rather than the WG output, which will change with time.

Section 2.2

Each tree in the hash-based signature algorithm specified in
[HASHSIG] uses the Leighton-Micali Signature (LMS) system. LMS
systems have two parameters. The first parameter is the height of
the tree, h, which is the number of levels in the tree minus one.

I strongly suggest making it more clear that there are two (types of)
trees involved -- the HSS tree of Section 2.1, and a tree within a given
LMS signature (what's being discussed here). Just using an unadorned
"the tree" is a recipe for confusion.

The [HASHSIG] specification defines the value I as the private key
identifier, and the same I value is used for all computations with
the same LMS tree. In addition, the [HASHSIG] specification defines

I think RFC 8554 uses I as the identifier for the key pair, not just the
private key, and it seems that in the COSE context we are more likely to
be referring to a public key than a private key.

Section 2.3

n - The number of bytes output by the hash function. This
specification supports only SHA-256 [SHS], with n=32.

H - A preimage-resistant hash function that accepts byte strings
of any length, and returns an n-byte string. This
           specification supports only SHA-256 [SHS].

Is supporting other n values basically just a matter of allocating from
a registry? If so, we might want to tweak the wording a bit to leave
the possibility for such a generalization.

The LM-OTS signature value can be summarized as the identifier of the
LM-OTS variant, the random value, and a sequence of hash values (y[0]
through y[p-1]) that correspond to the elements of the public key as
described in Section 4.5 of [HASHSIG]:

nit: I'd consider a different wording than "correspond to"; the
correspondence is a bit hard to describe clearly, but "hash values that
include as input" (or similar) is IMO fairly clear.

Section 3

o The 'kty' field MUST be present, and it MUST be 'HSS-LMS'.

(Re. "MUST be present", I note that RFC 8152 already has """The element
"kty" is a required element in a COSE_Key map."""

o If the 'alg' field is present, and it MUST be 'HSS-LMS'.

nit: no "and".

Section 5

To ensure that none of tree nodes are used to generate more than one
signature, the signer maintains state across different invocations of
the signing algorithm. Section 12.2 of [HASHSIG] offers some
practical implementation approaches around this statefulness. In

There is no Section 12.2 in RFC 8554; is perhaps Section 9.2 the
intended one?

Adam Roach has entered the following ballot position for
draft-ietf-cose-hash-sig-07: No Objection

When responding, please keep the subject line intact and reply to all
email addresses included in the To and CC lines. (Feel free to cut this
introductory paragraph, however.)

Please refer to https://www.ietf.org/iesg/statement/discuss-criteria.html

COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the work that went into creating this document. I have no
comments on its contents (the crypto is somewhat outside my area of
expertise), although I have a few observations regarding the examples.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Appendix A:

> This appendix provides a non-normative example of a COSE full message
> signature and an example of a COSE_Sign1 message. This section
> follows the formatting used in [RFC8152].

I would suggest that RFC 8610 might be a better reference here, as it is
the document that actually defines the extended CBOR diagnostic format.
In particular my recommendation is:

"This section is formatted according to the extended CBOR diagnostic
   format defined by [RFC8610]."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

§A.1:

> 98(
> [
>      / protected / h'a10300' / {
> \ content type \ 3:0
> } / ,
> / unprotected / {},
> / payload / 'This is the content.',
> / signatures / [
> [
>          / protected / h'a101382d' / {
> \ alg \ 1:-46 \ HSS-LMS \
> } / ,
>          / unprotected / {
> / kid / 4:'ItsBig'
> },
> / signature / ...
> ]
> ]
> ]
> )

I think there are two things here that need to be addressed.

First, section 3 of this document specifies:

> o The 'kty' field MUST be present, and it MUST be 'HSS-LMS'.

I can't find a 'kty' field in this example.

Also, this example uses '-46' as the identifier for HSS-LMS,
while section 6.1 specifies the value as "TBD." This example needs
a clear note added for the RFC editor that the "-46" needs to be
replaced by the IANA-assigned value. A similar annotation will be
required for the 'kty' field, regarding the value assigned for section
6.2.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

§A.2:

In particular my recommendation is:

"This section is formatted according to the extended CBOR diagnostic

I think there are two things here that need to be addressed.

First, section 3 of this document specifies:

> o The 'kty' field MUST be present, and it MUST be 'HSS-LMS'.

I can't find a 'kty' field in this example.

[JLS] The 'kty' field occurs in a COSE_Key and not in a COSE signed =
message. This is expected.

Also, this example uses '-46' as the identifier for HSS-LMS, while =
section 6.1 specifies the value as "TBD." This example needs a clear =
note added for the RFC editor that the "-46" needs to be replaced by the =
IANA-assigned value. A similar annotation will be required for the 'kty' =
field, regarding the value assigned for section 6.2.

[JLS] The powers that be (me) have declared that -46 is going to be the =
IANA-assigned value. Telling IANA to replace the "-46" with anything =
else would require that the example be re-generated or the signature =
would not verify.

Is there a phrase other than "When using a COSE key for this algorithm" =

I suggest the addition of:

I hope this resolved your concern:

Since the HSS/LMS signature algorithm does not depend on the
difficulty of discrete logarithm or factoring, the HSS/LMS signature
algorithm is considered to be post-quantum secure. The use of HSS/
LMS hash-based signatures to protect software update distribution
will allow the deployment of future software that implements new
cryptosystems. By deploying HSS/LMS today, authentication and
integrity protection of the future software can be provided, even if
advances break current digital signature mechanisms.

places where RFC 8554 is referenced.

All of these are well known digital signature algorithms. They only =

At the first use, I added:

I suggest:

The [HASHSIG] specification supports only SHA-256,
with m=3D32. An IANA registry is defined so that other hash =
functions
could be used in the future.

I suggest:

If large-scale quantum computers are ever built, these computers will
have more than a trivial number of quantum bits (qubits) and they
will be able to break many of the public-key cryptosystems currently
in use. A post-quantum cryptosystem [PQC] is a system that is secure
against against such large-scale quantum computers. It is open to
conjecture when it will be feasible to build such computers; however,
RSA [RFC8017], DSA [DSS], ECDSA [DSS], and EdDSA [RFC8032] are all
vulnerable if large-scale quantum computers come to pass.

I suggest:

Since the HSS/LMS signature algorithm does not depend on the
difficulty of discrete logarithm or factoring, the HSS/LMS signature
algorithm is considered to be post-quantum secure. The use of HSS/
LMS hash-based signatures to protect software update distribution
will allow the deployment of future software that implements new
cryptosystems. By deploying HSS/LMS today, authentication and
integrity protection of the future software can be provided, even if
advances break current digital signature mechanisms.

Perhaps an introduction sentence is enough:

Subordinate LMS trees are placed in the the HSS structure discussed
in Section 2.1. Each tree in the hash-based signature algorithm
specified in [HASHSIG] uses the Leighton-Micali Signature (LMS)
   system.=20

Section 4.3 of RFC 8554 says that x, I, and q are taken from the private =
key, so I think this text is accurate.

To address your point, I suggest:

The [HASHSIG] specification defines the value I as the private key
identifier, and the same I value is used for all computations with
the same LMS tree. The value I is also available in the public key.
In addition, the [HASHSIG] specification defines the value T[i] as
the m-byte string associated with the ith node in the LMS tree, where
and the nodes are indexed from 1 to 2^(h+1)-1. Thus, T[1] is the
m-byte string associated with the root of the LMS tree.

Good point. I suggest:

n - The number of bytes output by the hash function. For
        SHA-256 [SHS], n=3D32.

H - A preimage-resistant hash function that accepts byte strings
of any length, and returns an n-byte string.

I suggest:

The LM-OTS signature value can be summarized as the identifier of the
LM-OTS variant, the random value, and a sequence of hash values (y[0]
through y[p-1]) as described in Section 4.5 of [HASHSIG]:

      u32str(otstype) || C || y[0] || ... || y[p-1]

>=20

Yes, but the check is still needed. I suggest:

o The 'kty' field MUST be 'HSS-LMS'.

>=20

Fixed.

Yes. Good Catch.

Sorry, this was mostly me reading too quickly. You're probably fine with
no change, although modifying the phrasing along the lines of "...the
following checks are made on the key:" might be slightly clearer.

This example needs a clear note added for the RFC editor that the "-46" needs to be replaced by the IANA-assigned value. A similar annotation will be required for the 'kty' field, regarding the value assigned for section 6.2.

This sounds good to me. I've seen other i-ds do something like the
following, which seems helpful (in addition to the note above):

Value:  TBD (Value between -256 and 255 to be assigned by IANA,
with -46 preferred)

I suggest:

6.3. COSE Key Type Parameters Registry Entry

The new entry in the "COSE Key Type Parameters" registry [IANA] has
  the following columns:

Key Type: TBD (Value to be assigned above by IANA)

     Name: pub

Label: TBD (Value to be assigned by IANA)

     CBOR Type: bstr

Description: Public key for HSS/LMS hash-based digital signature

Reference: This document (Number to be assigned by RFC Editor)

That's basically what I had in mind; thanks!
(We could perhaps number the different TBDs but this case is not too
complicated...)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the CBOR Object Signing and Encryption WG of the IETF.

Title : Use of the HSS/LMS Hash-based Signature Algorithm with CBOR Object Signing and Encryption (COSE)
        Author : Russ Housley
	Filename : draft-ietf-cose-hash-sig-08.txt
	Pages : 17
	Date : 2019-12-04

Abstract:
This document specifies the conventions for using the Hierarchical
Signature System (HSS) / Leighton-Micali Signature (LMS) hash-based
signature algorithm with the CBOR Object Signing and Encryption
(COSE) syntax. The HSS/LMS algorithm is one form of hash-based
digital signature; it is described in RFC 8554.

hand for you :)

The best place I can see is in Section 5 (Operational Considerations), as
something like "Because of the need to maintain state across invocations of
the signing algorithm, a COSE Key Type Parameter for encoding the private
key (and its state) is deliberately not defined; serializing the state for
conveyance presents too great a risk of state reuse to justify any
potential benefit from doing so."

Understood, and I'm deferring to you on judging the balance.

I suggest:

A COSE Key Type Parameter for encoding the HSS/LMS private key and
the state about which tree nodes have been used is deliberately not
defined. It was not defined to avoid creating the ability to save
the private key and state, generate one or more signatures, and then
restore the private key and state. Such a restoration operation
provides disastrous opportunities for tree node reuse.

	Filename : draft-ietf-cose-hash-sig-09.txt
	Pages : 17
	Date : 2019-12-11

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
