Hey everyone,

I understand this is not covered by Curdle's charter, but we've made some
progress with SSH here, and I would like to seek any advice folks might
have about the SFTP situation. I would be happy to receive any responses
privately since prolonged discussion would not be relevant to the group.

SFTP is a widely used internet protocol that exists in two main versions:
SFTP v3 with OpenSSH extensions, and SFTP v6. SFTP v4 is also widely
supported, but most v4 implementations now seem to also include v6.

The schism happened over a decade ago when OpenSSH refused to adopt
protocol enhancements to support non-Unix platforms. They argued SFTP v3
has everything it needs, which it does on Unix. But from a non-Unix
perspective, everyone else thought it's not good enough, and better support
for other platforms is needed. Because of this, there wasn't consensus, and
SFTP did not become an RFC.

Now, the result is that SFTP is a major internet protocol, and anyone who
wants to implement it needs to follow this:

https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-secsh-filexfer-02

... for SFTP version 3, and this:

https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-secsh-filexfer-13

https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-galb-filexfer-extensions-00

... for SFTP version 6.

In addition, a number of details are unclear and not documented fully. For
example, OpenSSH encodes some packets differently than SFTP v3 prescribes,
and implementations of check-file extensions are not compatible in practice
due to different restrictions on their usage.

I would think it worthwhile for SFTP to receive better treatment, and I
think practical use justifies documenting both version 3 and version 6.
Since both are widely used, I think it would be reasonable for this to be
Standards track, not Informational.

However, if I write a draft - or perhaps two drafts - I'm not sure who to
turn to. I'm not sure there's a working group that this could be made part
of. Is it possible to pursue Standards track as an individual submission?
Should we create a working group with the purpose to document existing
practice?

This sounds like an excellent question to ask the SECDISPATCH
working group that will (hopefully) meet for the first time at
London.

Hi,

I'm currently adding curve25519 support to libtomcrypt.

That's why I've just read through
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-curdle-pkix-07 and I've got some
questions/comments:

# why don't you use the same public/private key throughout the examples?

that would make life easier to recognize what is where in which format

# why is there no ASN.1 dump of example 10.1?

# why are the examples in 10.3 not formatted the same way?

first example is like:

> 12 04 34: OCTET STRING
> : 04 20 D4 ...

second example is like:

>     12  34:   OCTET STRING, encapsulates {
> 14 32: OCTET STRING D4 ...

# why is the private key an OCTET STRING in an OCTET STRING?

I already got pointed to
https://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/curdle/current/msg00572.html ff.
which also discusses this and I follow the opinion of Nikos to not carry
technical debt in the standard if it's already found before final
standardization. It shouldn't be the problem of later implementors that
there were some early adopters who implemented a non-standard version.

# a correction proposal to Ch. 8:

> When the curve is known, use the more specific string of X25519 or
> X448.

should be

> When the curve is known, use the more specific string of "X25519" or
> "X448".

Cheers,
Steffen

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the CURves, Deprecating and a Little more Encryption WG of the IETF.

        Title : GSS-API Key Exchange with SHA2
        Authors : Simo Sorce
                          Hubert Kario
	Filename : draft-ietf-curdle-gss-keyex-sha2-05.txt
	Pages : 16
	Date : 2018-02-22

Abstract:
This document specifies additions and amendments to RFC4462. It
defines a new key exchange method that uses SHA-2 for integrity and
deprecates weak DH groups. The purpose of this specification is to
modernize the cryptographic primitives used by GSS Key Exchanges.

See https://mozphab-ietf.devsvcdev.mozaws.net/D4046 for the review in
context.

I have two high-level concerns about this document.

The presentation is very confusing, with a lot of duplication and not much
in the way of general principles until we get to the Security
Considerations section. You should start by laying out your principles
(FFDH >= 2048, > SHA-1, ECC >= 256, etc.) and then have less text for each
of the suites unless there's something unobvious in one of them (e.g.,
we're keeping it around for compatibility).

Second, I am concerned about the appropriateness of embedding the NSA's
judgements about what algorithms are suitable for various classification
levels in an IETF RFC. First, the IETF is not a US ogranization. Second, we
are just now deprecating the suite B RFCs because NSA changed its mind
about how to structure things. I think we should largely confine our
comments to the IETF's judgements about what is or is not secure.

I would strike "The ". Also, I'm not sure characterizing 256 as "strong"
and 448 as "very strong" is that helpful. Isn't the general consensus that
256 bits of real security is fine unless there are quantum computers, in
which case all bets are off.

The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'IANA Registration for new Cryptographic Algorithm Object Identifier
   Range'
  (draft-schaad-curdle-oid-registry-03.txt) as Informational RFC

This document is the product of the CURves, Deprecating and a Little more
Encryption Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Kathleen Moriarty and Eric Rescorla.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-schaad-curdle-oid-registry/

Technical Summary
When the Curdle Security Working Group was chartered, a range of
object identifiers was donated by Symantec Website Security for the
purpose of registering the Edwards Elliptic Curve key agreement and
signature algorithms. This donated set of OIDs allowed for shorter
values than would be possible using the existing S/MIME or PKIX arcs.
This document describes the range of identifiers that were assigned
in that donated range, transfers control of that range to IANA, and
establishes IANA allocation policies for any future assignments
within that range.

Working Group Summary
I am not aware of any controversy.
