Dear all:

Happy new year!

Time is running quickly and the cut off is already in 3 weeks.

http://www.ietf.org/meeting/important-dates-2015.html#ietf92 has 2015-02-0=
6 (Friday): Cut-off date for BOF proposal requests to Area Directors at UTC=
 23:59.

Assuming we want to make the DetNet WG forming BoF in Dallas, there are a n=
umber of tasks that we need to accomplish.

On the bright side we have:

*        A draft problem statement http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-finn-de=
tnet-problem-statement-01

* A pretty advanced text for the charter we put together before Hono=
lulu (https://bitbucket.org/pthubert/detnet/src/563491fcea0d314642c11a07a43=
b67e952b49e8d/detnet%20charter.txt?at=3Dmaster )

*        A requirement draft for utilities https://tools.ietf.org/html/draf=
t-wetterwald-detnet-utilities-reqs-00

Out of my mind we still need to progress on:

*        draft 00's for industrial (David?), Audio/Video (???) and vehicula=
r (Gordon?)

* gap analysis vs. of metro Ethernet

* applicability of work at TEAS, CCAMP and PCE

*        draft charter

Do we have volunteers to take on some of this?

Pascal

PS) Slides of the Honolulu BoF are visible here: https://bitbucket.org/pthu=
bert/detnet/src

Let me echo Jouni's observation about dates, but ask exactly what has happened
since Honolulu.

Judging by this mailing list, the topic has not got started yet (it would be
harsh to describe it as dead in the water, since death would assume some sort of
initial momentum!)

It really isn't wise to totter from one BoF to the next. You don't really get
endless attempts at forming a working group, and without visible progress it is
hard to see what would be gained by a meeting in Dallas.

There *was* some email traffic in the immediate aftermath of the BoF (indeed,
while we were still in Hawaii), but this died out by the end of November and no
detnet I-Ds have been posted since October. Even Pascal's first stab at a gap
analysis seems to have languished in the email archive.

So, up-level questions:
What is driving this?
Who is actually developing in this space?
Is there a demand?

My advice would be to bimble along with this mailing list until you have some
I-Ds and a little more direction and substance, and then come back to a WG
forming BoF.

Adrian (not your AD - and not anyone's AD for much longer)

This is great advice, Adrian, thanks for this!

I'll take your question in a different thread to make sure they can be foll=
owed up easily.

About activity and readiness, I agree that asking for a BoF looks premature=
from the perspective of the activity on the list.
Fact is, there has been quite a bit of activity, but on other forums and of=
fline personal discussions.

To my best knowledge, here's where we are:

1) We have a well-advanced requirement draft for power utilities https://to=
ols.ietf.org/html/draft-wetterwald-detnet-utilities-reqs-01=20
2) We have interested parties and proposed authors for requirements in AVB =
and in particular AVB in automotive (Ethan and Gordon)
3) We have interested parties and proposed authors for requirements in indu=
strial Factory Automation (David leading, Rudy and I can help or suggest co=
-authors)
4) ISA100.12 is interested in providing requirements for both Northbound an=
d Southbound APIs in industrial Process Control. This is slow, and very muc=
h bound to US so Dallas would be a great place to make some progress, even =
if it is not in the form of a WG-forming BoF.
5) We have started a problem statement draft (https://tools.ietf.org/html/d=
raft-finn-detnet-problem-statement-01) and an draft architecture is on the =
works.
6) We have a draft charter (for our activity if not for WG yet, I'm working=
on an update that I'll propose to the list in the coming days).

Cheers,

Pascal

Dear all:

As Adrian points out, we need more activity on the list and a clear demonst=
ration of a critical mass of contributors before we can request a WG-formin=
g BoF at the IETF.
Question comes up of which contribution that could be, and that's when the =
charter discussion comes into play.

Based on the discussions in Honolulu, I rephrased the proposed charter as f=
ollows.=20

>From there, we do need all the activity and comments we can get, like:
- I'm willing to contribute on a piece listed there
- I'm willing to contribute on a piece that is not but should be listed the=
re
- this piece does not belong in DetNet
- comments, improvements, suggestions..

Please speak up!

detnet: "deterministic networking"=20

Background on deterministic networking =20
--------------------------------------

Operational Technology (OT) refers to industrial networks that are typicall=
y used for monitoring systems and supporting control loops, as well as move=
ment detection systems for use in process control (i.e., process manufactur=
ing) and factory automation (i.e., discrete manufacturing). Due to its diff=
erent goals, OT has evolved in parallel but in a manner that is radically d=
ifferent from IT/ICT, focusing on highly secure, reliable and deterministic=
networks, with limited scalability over a bounded area.

The convergence of IT and OT technologies, also called the Industrial Inter=
net, represents a major evolution for both sides. The work has already star=
ted; in particular, the industrial automation space has been developing a n=
umber of Ethernet-based replacements for existing digital control systems, =
often not packet-based (fieldbus technologies). These replacements are mean=
t to provide similar behavior as the incumbent protocols, and their common =
focus is to transport a fully characterized flow over a well-controlled env=
ironment (i.e., a factory floor), with a bounded latency, extraordinarily l=
ow frame loss, and a very narrow jitter. Examples of such protocols include=
 PROFINET, ODVA Ethernet/IP, and EtherCAT.
=20
In parallel, the need for determinism in professional and home audio/video =
markets drove the formation of the Audio/Video Bridging (AVB) standards eff=
orts of IEEE 802.1. With the explosion of demand for connectivity and multi=
media in transportation in general, AVB has also become one of the hottest =
topics in the automotive industry, finding current application in vehicle h=
ead units, rear seat entertainment modules, amplifiers, and camera modules,=
with engine control systems to follow soon. Thus automotive AVB networks s=
hare the requirement for extremely low packet loss rates, guaranteed finite=
 latency, and low jitter.

Other instances of in-vehicle deterministic networks have arisen as well fo=
r control networks in cars, trains and buses, as well as avionics, with, fo=
r instance, the mission-critical Avionics Full-Duplex Switched Ethernet (AF=
DX) that was designed as part of the ARINC 664 standards. Existing automoti=
ve control networks such as the LIN, CAN and FlexRay standards were not des=
igned to cover these increasing demands in terms of bandwidth and scalabili=
ty that we see with various kinds of Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) and ne=
w multiplexing technologies based on Ethernet are now getting traction.=20

The generalization of the needs for more deterministic networks have led to=
the IEEE 802.1 AVB Task Group becoming the Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN)=
Task Group (TG), with a much-expanded constituency from the industrial and=
vehicular markets. Along with this expansion, the networks in consideratio=
n are becoming larger and structured, requiring deterministic forwarding be=
yond the LAN boundaries. For instance, Industrial Automation segregates the=
network along the broad lines of the Purdue Enterprise Reference Architect=
ure (PERA), using different technologies at each level, and public infrastr=
uctures such as Electricity Automation require deterministic properties ove=
r the Wide Area. The realization is now coming that the convergence of IT a=
nd OT networks requires Layer-3, as well as Layer-2, capabilities.=20

In order to serve this extended requirement, the IETF and the IEEE must col=
laborate and define an abstract model that can be applicable both at Layer-=
2 and Layer-3, and along segments of different technologies. With this new =
work, a path may span, for instance, across a (limited) number of 802.1 bri=
dges and then a (limited) number of IP routers. In that example, the IEEE80=
2.1 bridges may be operating at Layer-2 over Ethernet whereas the IP router=
s may be 6TiSCH nodes operating at Layer-2 and/or Layer-3 over the IEEE802.=
15.4e MAC. The proposed model should enable a fully scheduled operation orc=
hestrated by a central controller, as well as a more distributed operation =
with probably lesser capabilities. In any fashion, the model should not com=
promise the ability of a network to keep carrying the sorts of traffic that=
 is already carried today.=20
=20
Once the abstract model is agreed upon, the IETF will need to specify the s=
ignaling elements to be used to establish a path and the tagging elements t=
o be used identify the flows that are to be forwarded along that path. The =
IETF will also need to specify the necessary protocols, or protocol additio=
ns, based on relevant IETF technologies such as PCE, MPLS and 6TiSCH, to im=
plement the selected model. As a result of this work, it will be possible t=
o establish a multi-hop path over the IP network, for a particular flow wit=
h precise timing and throughput requirements, and carry this particular flo=
w along the multi-hop path with such characteristics as low latency and ult=
ra-low jitter, duplication and elimination of packets over non-congruent pa=
ths for a higher delivery ratio, and/or zero congestion loss. Depending on =
the network capabilities and on the current state, requests to establish a =
path by an end-node or a network management entity may be granted or reject=
ed, and an existing path may be moved or removed. =20

WG description
--------------

The deterministic networking Working Group (detnet) will focus on the estab=
lishment and maintenance of multi-hop paths over Layer-2 Bridged and Layer-=
3 routed segments. Though only Layer-3 operations will be specified by the =
WG as Standard Track documents, the group will collaborate with IEEE802.1TS=
N, which designs the Layer-2 operations, to define a common paradigm, lever=
aging cross-participation and liaison work to maintain consistency. In that=
common paradigm, a number of elements such as the host operation should be=
agnostic to the organization of the multi-hop path.=20

The Working Group will initially consider a centralized model where the con=
trol and data planes are decoupled, and refer to the general Software Defin=
ed Networking (SDN) model of an application layer, a control layer, and a n=
etwork infrastructure layer, separated by APIs. DetNet will propose standar=
ds for the network infrastructure and its APIs, only. The considered networ=
k will initially be of a moderate size, composed of mixed Layer-2 / Layer-3=
sub-networks of IEEE802.1 bridges, routers, and hosts. A single administra=
tive domain such as a campus, a Small/Home office Network, or a controlled =
Wide Area Network will be assumed to start with, and approaches that can be=
applied to the Internet at large will be favored.=20
=20
The Working Group will initially specify the protocol elements that are req=
uired to enable an multi-hop path, and forward along that path with the det=
erministic properties of controlled latency, low packet loss, ultra-low jit=
ter, and high reliability. The work will apply to and only to flows that ca=
n be characterized in a manner that allows the network to 1) reserve the ap=
propriate resources for the flows in advance, and 2) release/reuse the reso=
urces when they are no more required. The work will cover the characterizat=
ion of flows, the tagging of packets, the required forwarding behaviors, as=
well as the state that may need to be established in intermediate nodes; i=
t will not include end-to-end consideration such as transport protocols. Th=
is work focuses on flows and does not depend on the path setup protocol tha=
t will be selected. The data models and flow tagging should be compatible w=
ith the similar work done at IEEE801.1TSN so they could be either directly =
usable at both layers, or mappable in an unambiguous fashion.
=20
The WG will interface with other appropriate groups in the IETF in the Inte=
rnet (e.g. 6TiSCH), Transport (e.g. TSVWG), Operations and Management, Rout=
ing and Security areas. As the work progresses, some of the items initially=
considered the deterministic networking WG may be transferred to those wor=
king groups as deemed appropriate by all parties.

=20
Work Items =20
----------
=20
- Deliverables:
  =20
  * An analysis of the needs in various deployment environments. 3-4 inform=
ational track requirement documents which could include factory automation,=
grid automation, avionics and audio/video in professional studios and/or a=
utomotive applications.
 =20
  * A generic problem statement including an analysis of the proposed solut=
ions of the related work at IEEE802.1TSN.

  * An architecture detailing the preferred approach and its interaction wi=
th the related work at IEEE802.1TSN.

  * A standards track data flow characterization model document for use in =
flow reservation protocol. The model should be independent from the protoco=
l(s) used to deploy the flows (e.g. an evolution of PCEP or CCAMP).=20
 =20
  * A standards track data model document describing device and links capab=
ilities (feature support) and resources (buffers, bandwidth...) for use in =
advertising the deterministic network elements to the controller plane. The=
model should be independent from the protocol(s) that are used to notify t=
he controller (e.g. ISIS or TEAS extensions).=20
 =20
  * A standards track flow identification document for use in packet forwar=
ding, with the specific application to at least classical IP, 6TiSCH track =
forwarding, and MPLS.=20
 =20
  * A standards track data model for the abstract state to be installed in =
the forwarding device and the associated packet forwarding behavior.=20

Based on that work, DetNet will study the gap between the needs in those =
models and the protocol elements that are available at the IETF, and sugges=
t further work for extensions where needed.=20

I am genuine not trying to be negative, but to try to give you the momentum and
ammunition to make progress in the IETF. Too often I hear "but it is too
slow/hard to make progress in the IETF" and I would prefer that this work (if it
has legs) would be given a proper airing within the IETF.

Well, there is an easy answer to that!
Have your discussion on the list or, at the very least, report your discussions
on the list.
You want a working group, and that is a community activity. Unless you involve
the community you will fail.

Having people under one roof and sitting round a dinner table to make progress
is an excellent option.

So, no change since October. Specifically, no changes since the BoF in Honolulu.

To be brutally honest, the draft charter is a pointless waste of your effort at
the moment. If you don't have some better answers to the questions arising from
Honolulu then you don't have enough direction.

Let's be clear, you don't need a WG or a charter to do the work. What you need
is to do the work.

All clear and fair, Adrian.=20

And I'd add that "to do the work" requires agreement of what's the work to =
be done.

I'm providing my own recap from the Honolulu meeting in the separate mail I=
sent on the list, yes, as a charter, but also and mainly it's a todo list.=
=20

The big thing we found at the BoF is that we have to do a gap analysis, and=
the question was in the end of the meeting was, well, gap between what and=
 what?

One of the "what" is the set of DetNet requirements that must be fulfilled.=
Note: we did not present the existing work at or since Honolulu, so it is =
still to be debated.

Based on requirements - when we have them all - we'll have to consider vari=
ous data models and interactions that can represent a desirable solution to=
 the problem.=20
Only then do we have a "what" that we can compare with another "what". Anot=
her big progress we made in Honolulu was that we decided to focus on the se=
parate control plane, at least for a start.

The other "what" is the world at large, and the IETF in particular. Then ag=
ain the BoF helped, and now we know we'll have to look at CCAMP, TEAS, and =
PCE.=20

All in all, the BoF was really useful, and I trust that we could use a roof=
again in Dallas to progress on the requirements. Do you think that asking =
for another BoF is excessive?

Pascal

> Do you think that asking for another BoF is excessive?

Unless you're asking for it in Routing, this is a question between you and your
AD.

It seems to me that you can run two approaches to taking work to the community:
1. Discuss and debate before documenting
2. Document and use that to drive discussion

At this early stage, I would expect that there is a small core of passionately
interested people who could meet electronically and produce some documents for
the rest of the community to pick up and work on. I would see that as a
criterion for showing enough interest for a WG-forming BoF.

Suppose you have a second BoF and it fails. How will you persuade the IESG to
let you have a third BoF? So get all of your ducks lined up.

As some of us are new to the IETF processes and we would appreciate some gu=
idance with creating the *-00 drafts that have been requested. We've seen =
this draft for utilities posted: https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-wetterwa=
ld-detnet-utilities-reqs-00, and are planning to contribute some automotive=
 and pro audio drafts.

Specifically where are these "stored" as they are being created by a group =
of authors? I'm assuming they are not posted to the IETF until the draft i=
s ready. How are others that might want to contribute made aware of the wo=
rk that is going on (i.e. how do they get access to the drafts in progress)=
?

Craig,

Once you have written the draft, submit it using the webtool here:
http://datatracker.ietf.org/submit/

Typically you need to do the solicitation for co-authors behind the scenes.=
Also, one good way to do it is to submit an *interesting* -00 version and =
that works like a honey pot.. others will want to join and provide their co=
ntributions.

For example, my collaborative work is usually shared via github:
https://github.com/jounikor?tab=3Drepositories

Old fashion way is just email stuff around :)

If you need any assistance on further practicalities, just drop me a mail.

- Jouni

Subject: [Detnet] Drafts - How to?

?
