This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, mailman-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

FYI and review. I believe they are reusing (or at least referencing)
stuff from the DISMAN developed alarm MIB. I have not (yet) read the
recent revision.

Sorry that I did not forward when WG Last Call started (I guess I missed it).

So the WG chair agrees it would have been goor to check with DISMAN WG.
I guess if we do review quickly, that that would be good.

I suggest the following changes:

In Section 3.1.3

OLD

In this document we define one new Error Code. The Error Code uses
the value TBA (by IANA) and is referred to as "Alarms". The values
used in the Error Values field are the same as the values used for
IANAItuProbableCause in the Alarm MIB [ALARM-MIB]. Note these values
are managed by IANA, see http://www.iana.org.

NEW:

In this document we define one new Error Code. The Error Code uses
the value TBA (by IANA) and is referred to as " GMPLS Alarms". The =
values
used in the Error Values field are the same as the values used for
IANAItuProbableCause in the Alarm MIB [ALARM-MIB]. Note these values
are managed by IANA, see the IANA Considerations Section

IN the IANA Considerations Section:

OLD:

Additionally, Section 3.1.3 defines a new Error Code. The Error Code
is "Alarms" and uses Error Values defined in the Alarm MIB [ALARM-
MIB]. The suggested Error code value is 28.

NEW:

Additionally, Section 3.1.3 defines a new Error Code. The Error Code
is "GMPLS Alarms" and uses Error Values similar to =
IANAItuProbableCause
defined in the Alarm MIB [ALARM-MIB]. The Error code value allocated =
by IANA=20
   is TBD, see http://www.iana.org.

In Section 6.1

OLD:

[ALARM-MIB] Chisholm, S., Romascanu, D., "Alarm MIB",
            draft-ietf-disman-alarm-mib-18.txt, February 2004

NEW:=20

[ALARM-MIB] Chisholm, S., Romascanu, D., "Alarm MIB",
            RFC 3877, September 2004

=20

What I suggest is to require from IANA a code value for 'GMPLS Alarms' , =
and then use the text as suggested.

Regards,

Dan

I see two changes.
1. "Alarms" --> "GMPLS Alarms"
I'm not sure why you propose this change. The alarms indicated are NOT GMPLS alarms. They
are Alarm MIB alarms indicated using GMPLS signaling. I presume that the Alarm MIB does
not refer to them as GMPLS Alarms.
2. Reference changed from URL to IANA Considerations Section
I have no strong feeling on this, but it seems to me that the IANA Considerations Section
is intended to list IANA actions for this draft, not to provide reference information for
the reader. I anything, I would tend to strike the whole sentence ["Note these..."] as
irrelevant.

I see points:
1. Change of "Alarms" to "GMPLS Alarms". As above.
2. Addition of "similar to ...."
This is good, but must use "which are the same as..."
3. Removal of suggested value.
We MUST suggest a value to IANA. This is a complex code space and
it is highly helpful to IANA that we suggest a value.
4. Reference to IANA URL. As before, this section is provided for IANA's
benefit. So no URL is needed.

Yup. We noticed that. Well done!

the text as suggested.

Thanks. Yes, we could do this, but have no need as the established procedures for managing
the RSVP code points are well understood by the community and by IANA. Thus, the actual
value will be supplied just prior to RFC Ed. If there is a need for resolution of this
particular value sooner than that, we will of course apply to IANA under the provisions of
draft-kompella-rsvp-change-02.txt

Sorry - I was confused and believed that you are suggesting to extend =
the TC with a new value specific to GMPLS. This being not the case, I am =
tabling my sugestion.=20

I believe that readability for the RFC user cannot harm. I would not =

me as well.=20

Randy,

Hi -

I'm really happy to have received this latest implementation report
for the DISMAN-NSLOOKUP-MIB. I'll merge it with the reports
that I've previously posted, and send the updated report to the
working group mailing list.

Hi Randy,

Yes - you may forward an implementation report to the WG. The Juniper
E-Series router(s) have supported the DISMAN-NSLOOKUP-MIB since Sept of
'00. Our implementation is complete in that we support all of the
objects. My experience to date leads me to believe that this MIB is
hardly used if at all, which is based on no customer inquiries or
problem reports. Admittedly, I do not know for sure.

Hi Bert -

In preparation for advancing the disman Remote Operations MIB
modules to Draft Standard, here are implementation reports for the
DISMAN-PING-MIB, the DISMAN-TRACROUTE-MIB, and the
DISMAN-NSLOOKUP-MIB. There were at least two independent
implementations of each of these. There was at least
one freely-available implementation ("B") for all
three MIB modules.

Implementation | Submitted By | Submitter's |
     Report | | Address |
---------------+-----------------+----------------------------+
        B | J. Chen | chenj@buptnet.edu.cn |
        R | Govind Haridass | gharidas@riverstonenet.com |
        J | Daniel Chuang | dchuang@juniper.net |
        E | John Scano | jscano@juniper.net |

Note that "E" and "J" were done by different groups at
Juniper, and were reported separately.

Report | Implementation Source
-------+-------------------------------------------------------
B | Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications
       | Network Information Center
   E | Juniper (E-Series routers)
   J | Juniper
   R | SNMP Research

Module: DISMAN-PING-MIB

There were reports on three independent implementations, and all
supported all three object groups in this MIB module. Additional
details on the individual objects implemented:

Module: DISMAN-TRACEROUTE-MIB

There were reports on three independent implementations of
the DISMAN-TRACROUTE-MIB, and all three supported all four
groups.

Module: DISMAN-NSLOOKUP-MIB

There were two reports of implementations of the
DISMAN-NSLOOKUP-MIB module. Both implemented the
mandatory object group for lookupCompliance, which
is a superset of the lookupMinimumComplaince.

It's amazing how this works. No sooner had I sent this message, than
another arrived informing of the existence of yet another implementation,
and letting me know that one of the implementations may have been
mis-attributed.

So, we definitely have our multiple implementations, but it looks like
I may need to do a little shuffling on the implementation report to
ensure that credit goes where credit is due.

The lesson: *please* skim through those implementation reports to
make sure that I haven't messed things up in the process of summarizing!

Hi -

Merging in another implementation report on the DISMAN-PING-MIB
module has left me wondering whether it was a good idea to remove
the pingCompliance and pingGroup OBJECT-GROUP. I find that I
have to go back to RFC 2925 to make sense of implementation reports,
and that when someone says they implement the pingGroup, that
has no meaning in terms of the current i-d. This doesn't seem right.
Comments?

FWIW, smidiff flags the removal as serious errors:

DISMAN-PING-MIB:1118 [1] group `pingGroup' has been deleted
DISMAN-PING-MIB:1163 [1] group `pingTimeStampGroup' has been deleted
DISMAN-PING-MIB:1017 [1] compliance `pingCompliance' has been deleted

You can deprecate or obsolete things, but not remove things since other
definitions might depend on things (e.g. agent capability statements).

Exactly. When advancing from PS to DS (or recycling at PS), it is allowed
to "remove" things. But for our MIB modules, that "remove" should indeed
be translated into "deprecate" or "obsolete".

The old compliance statement(s) should also be deprecated/obsoleted and
new ones should be defined that no longer have the depreacted/obsoleted
groups present.

RFC 2578 ("Structure of Management Information Version 2 (SMIv2)"),
section 10, 4th paragraph says:
" Also note that obsolete definitions must not be removed from MIB
modules since their descriptors may still be referenced by other
information modules, and the OBJECT IDENTIFIERs used to name them
   must never be re-assigned."

OK, I will insert the old groups and the compliance statements for all
three MIB modules.

As their new status I prefer "deprecated". Any objections?

I understand why the new "minimal conformance" material was added.
Could someone remind me why the old material would need to
be deprecated?

You'll find the discussion in the messages we exchanged on the
list in early July.

We split the pingGroup into the pingMinimumGroup and the
pingCtlRowStatusGroup, because we wanted to have the
pingCtlRowStatus optional in the minimumCompliancy.

Furthermore, we had different compliancy constraints for
the two members pingResultsLastGoodProbe and
pingProbeHistoryTime of the pingTimeStampGroup and gave up
this group.

In order to use the same groups in both compliancy
statements (full and minimum), we replaced pingCompliancy
by pingFullCompliancy. This lead to a clean definition,
but probably it is not good considering the existing
implementations referencing RFC 2925.

pingCompliancy and pingFullCompliancy are semantically almost
identical. The only difference concerns object
pingProbeHistoryTime.

We could also stick with the compliancy definitions of RFC 2925
and use different groups for the new minimumCompliancy.

Hi,
It seems that the Expression MIB has not found much interest in the
community. I have probably missed the discussion on the demerits of the
MIB.
Can someone tell me or point me to any discussion about what went wrong
or what is bad about this MIB?
I personally find the Expression MIB a good and useful piece of work.

   Thanks

   Glenn

...

At this stage, interest is gauged by implementation reports
and discussion. If you'd like this work to be able to advance,
submitting a report on your implementation would help.
(Please note the attached message from over three months ago!)
When there are no implementation reports, even from groups
that were its biggest proponents and who have probably implemented
it, claims that the MIB module is "good and useful" ring hollow.
RFC 2026 section 4.1.2 is quite clear on what needs to happen before
this work can advance.

Hi,
The following is the Expression MIB implementation experience at

>>Deployment / Operational Experience:
The DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB is deployed on our passive sensors
(CpMonitor). There is generic proprietary MIB (CpMonitorMIB)
that is supported on these sensors that covers a very wide
  range of protocol based statistics,
     [VLAN, IP,MAC] wise,
        [IPv4,IPv6,Other] stats,
        [UDP,TCP.ICMP,Other] stats
        [Port] stats
Three type of stats are served - the Min, Max and Average. The
Max is taken by considering the deltas of the statistic over a
small interval (msecs) in the polling window.

That is a rich source of information but sending it all to the
manager does ot make sense and is bandwidth/resource expensive.
We use the DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB to build higher level
information objects to cater to the needs of the Network Manager.

We have a generic Management Application (ApMan) module of our
network management platform (NetSkate Visualizer) that has a
simple GUI that interfaces with the agent and allows a user to
generate the expressions for the higher level information objects.
The Network Manager uses these higher information objects for simple
matters like statistics generation, resource management, fault
  detection, and security management.

We have also built an aggregation mechanism which may be considered
as an extension of the DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB. It basically allows the
concatenation of MO instance values. This has proven to be very
effective in routine polling of a large number of MOs. This cuts
down the overhead of OIDs in the SNMP 'get' and 'response' PDUs.

Computer resource consumption due to delta's is not a major
  concern on these sensors.

The net-snmp code base is used for the implementation.
>>
>>Comments:
>>
 1. The MIB is nicely done - but there are places that need more
clarity. Particularly the definitions of the operators and
    operations.
 2. The wild-carding provides great power but its implementation
    was found to be complex.
 3. I would recommend the addition of the MO-instance value
concatenation operator. It has immediate and wide-spread
    application.

Hi,
I have just filled up and sent the details of our partial
implementation of the DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB.
Are there any pointers to discussion on the pros and cons
of the DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB ?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Distributed Management Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Definitions of Managed Objects for Remote Ping,
			  Traceroute, and Lookup Operations
	Author(s)	: J. Quittek, K. White
	Filename	: draft-ietf-disman-remops-mib-v2-05.txt
	Pages : 96
	Date : 2004-10-21

This memo defines Management Information Bases (MIBs) for performing
remote ping, traceroute and lookup operations at a remote host. When
managing a network it is useful to be able to initiate and retrieve
the results of ping or traceroute operations when performed at a
remote host. A Lookup capability is defined in order to enable
resolving of either an IP address to an DNS name or an DNS name to an
IP address at a remote host.
Currently, there are several enterprise-specific MIBs for performing
remote ping or traceroute operations. The purpose of this memo is to
define a standards-based solution to enable interoperability.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-disman-remops-mib-v2-05.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-disman-remops-mib-v2-05.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-disman-remops-mib-v2-05.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Hi -

It's good to finally see an implementation report for this.
A couple of questions in-line below...

This is currently a mandatory group. *If* we were to update
the specification, what would you like the conformance material
to look like?

...

What is the subset of values that was useful, or was this just
not implemented at all?

Would you care to comment further on wildcarding? Was it not
implemented at all or was it just implemented in limited form?

Randy

P.S. I cc'ed Glenn because he's not a mailing list subscriber, at least
at that address.

The split between script and expression is old. See the minutes at
http://www.ietf.org/ietf/disman/disman-minutes-96jun.txt for just
one example.

Some of the thornier issues are in the slides for the disman session at
http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/97dec/index.html

There's lots of discussion in the WG archives, starting with the
generic debate about the choice between dedicated MIBs
(like Ping/Traceroute), scripting, and expressions. Some of the
threads from August / September 1996 give some insight into
the thinking, and Bob Stewart's postings in March 1997 mark
the birth of the expression MIB.

Dear all,

This version -05 differs from version -04 only in the conformance
sections of the DISMAN-PING-MIB and the DISMAN-TRACEROUTE-MIB.

Deprecated compliance statements and object groups were added
to both conformance sections.

As discussed on this list before, it was wrong to delete the
old compliance statements and object groups from RFC 2925 that
are not in use anymore. They are missing in version -04.
Now, in version -05 they appear again but with status 'deprecated'.

The deprecated compliance statements are
  - pingCompliance,
  - traceRouteCompliance.

The deprecated object groups are
  - pingGroup,
  - pingTimeStampGroup,
  - traceRouteGroup,
  - traceRouteTimeStampGroup.

Thanks,

    Juergen
