This draft is a work item of the Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance of the IETF.

Title : Authenticated Received Chain (ARC) Protocol
        Authors : Kurt Andersen
                          John Rae-Grant

	Pages : 43
	Date : 2016-12-02

Abstract:
Authenticated Received Chain (ARC) permits an organization which is
creating or handling email to indicate its involvement with the
handling process. It defines a set of cryptographically signed
header fields in a manner analagous to that of DKIM. Assertion of
responsibility is validated through a cryptographic signature and by
querying the Signer's domain directly to retrieve the appropriate
public key. Changes in the message that might break DKIM can be
identified through the ARC set of header fields.

Do you have an ARC implementation? Have you tried testing it against
somebody else's implementation? If not, you should join our testing
event Friday of this week! No travel required, we'll be sending messages
between implementations while on a conference bridge. Video optional.

If you have an implementation of ARC in your product or service, contact
me off-list. I'll add you to the list of interop participants, and
you'll receive details for this and future testing events.

Thanks,
--Steve.

An ARC implementer recently pointed out that the rationale for capturing
the contents of the Authentication-Results: header in the
ARC-Authentication-Results: header wasn't clear from reading the
specification. So I'd like to propose some changes to the draft
specification to address this point.

Apologies if my method of suggesting/describing changes is out of order
- redirects welcomed.

Section 1 "Introduction" --

First paragraph, first sentence, change "non-compliant messages" to
"handling messages that fail to authenticate."

Split the existing first paragraph; make the last three sentences a
separate paragraph, starting with "This specification defines..."

Modify the second sentence of the new second paragraph to append, ", and
preserve the contents of the Authentication-Results: header created by
ARC-aware intermediaries."

Replace the last paragraph of the section with the following:

> Another goal is to capture and convey the contents of the
> Authentication-Results (A-R) mechanism [RFC7601] as seen by
> intermediaries in indirect mailflows. Normally A-R permits the results
> of an email authentication evaluation process to be transmitted from
> the evaluating agent (e.g. an MTA) to a consumer that makes use of the
> information (e.g. a filtering mechanism or MUA). A-R is usually only
> used this way within a given ADMD, but ARC can reliably convey the
> contents of the A-R header that each ARC-aware intermediary generates
> between ADMDs. The final message receiver may choose to use this
> information from valid ARC chains - particularly the A-R contents
> recorded by the first ARC-aware intermediary - in evaluating messages
> that fail to authenticate through direct checks of protocols like
> DKIM, DMARC, or SPF.
>
> For more detailed examples of when and how A-A-R contents might be
> used by message receivers, please refer to [ARC-USAGE].
>

Section 2.3 "Utility" --

Append the following to the first sentence: "..., including the
authentication results observed by each ARC-aware intermediary."

Section 4 "Overview" --

Append the following to the first sentence of the second paragraph: "...
and any authentication results they evaluated when receiving the message.=
"

Section 5.1.3's first paragraph is a bit awkward. I'd like to propose
the following replacement text for changes:

> ARC-Authentication-Results (AAR) is a copy of the contents of the
> Authentication-Results: header [RFC7601] as generated by the ADMD
> creating this set of ARC headers. That is, it captures the
> authentication results that the reporting ADMD observed when it
> received the message from another ADMD.=20

I recommend striking the second paragraph (sentence) in this section
about the "i=3D" tag -- the same exact text appears in the following
5.1.3.1 "`i' Tag Value"

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance of the IETF.

Title : Recommended Usage of the Authenticated Received Chain (ARC)
        Authors : Steven Jones
                          John Rae-Grant

	Pages : 15
	Date : 2016-12-27

Abstract:
The Authentication Received Chain (ARC) provides a means to preserve
email authentication results and verify the identity of email message
handlers, each of which participates by inserting certain header
fields before passing the message on. But the specification does not
indicate how intermediaries and receivers should interpret or utilize
ARC. This document will provide guidance in these areas.

We've had an updated draft for more than three weeks now, with no
comments. It's a bad time of year, true, but the chairs are going to
expect some activity soon, or we might have to consider this working
group moribund.

I plan to say that this working group is NOT going to meet in Chicago.
I'll reconsider that if we actually get some activity here and things
show up that might actually go on a working group session agenda.

Barry, chair

> Steve, can you give us a brief report on how this went?

A very brief report, yes - because it turned out that three of four
implementations would have no representatives available at that time, so
the testing did not in fact happen. My apologies for not reporting that
at the time, but I was busy coming down with the flu.

Speaking for myself, I didn't think it would take this long to pull the
implementations together - which is unfair given that I'm not writing
one... We had originally thought to collect a test corpus as an output
of the live test sessions, because we thought this would all be pretty
easy. But while some sample messages were shared from session to
session, nobody produced a comprehensive set as implementations were
found to be incomplete, or buggy, etc..

In the most recent conversation I had with Murray Kucherawy, around the
14th, we discussed just picking an implementation and producing such a
corpus. Publish the keys, the input and output messages, and maybe the
intermediate stages like canonicalized hashes, and allow the various
implementers to run that against their code off-line. They could then
take a stab at determining if there was a bug (and on which side), or a
vague point in the spec, without having to coordinate schedules.

Where is said corpus? See previous comment about flu, and the holidays.

That's the current status. Thanks for reminding me about this open work
item.

Most of the work has been proceeding off-list with work toward an interop
(that failed to happen on 12/16), ongoing development on the OpenARC
package, release of the beta on MailerQ, installations for production usage
at AOL and GMail. The ARC-enabled dkimpy package is available though Scott
has expressed a desire to refactor some of the code. As far as we are
aware, there are an number of other implementations which are waiting on a
functional OpenARC package.

As to open work on the spec:
1) Murray had promised some ideas for restructuring the draft to make it
more understandable, but I haven't received them yet.
2) There have been some questions begging additional clarity on the
relationship between the Authentication-Results header and the
ARC-Authentication-Results headers which I have not yet put into prose.

As to other work:
There are also two sessions planned for the agenda at M3AAWG (Feb 20-23 in
San Francisco) (I realize that is not an open venue, but, so far, the
active participants on the spec and implementations are in both groups). We
should have updates regarding implementation status after those meetings.

I plan to say that this working group is NOT going to meet in Chicago.

That seems reasonable. I don't know of anything that needs F2F time right
now.
