Hi DNA folks,

Sorry if this has already been mentioned ( I missed a few days of list
activity, if any, and there doesn't seem to be a February archive yet
).

The IPv6 WG may be considering this draft (see the email thread below
from the IPv6 WG) for a way to deal with the dwindling supply of RA
flags. We should probably be looking into it as well as we do need a
couple of RA flags for the DNA solution.

The draft seems to be proposing an extended flags option that is in
the typical type-length-value form. The first 8 flags go into their
regular spot in the RA and flags beyond that go into this new option.
Flags 0-5 are already assigned while 6-7 and those in this new option
are yet to be defined.

I guess some thought needs to be given to how flags 6 and 7 are
assigned, as the use of those flags has less overhead than flags that
need to go into the new option. I'm not sure how that choice will be
made, or how we weigh up the needs of DNA against any other protocols
that might need new flags as well.

Any thoughts?
Regards,
Brett.

Hi Sathya,

If there's no configured prefix on that interface of the router, it
shouldn't advertise prefixes (unless it learns one through Router
Discovery).

In that case it will not route to or from a non-link local prefix either.
Then it's not a problem as there's no prefix on link.

Advertising no prefixes (as complete) is the same as advertising the host's
existing prefixes are invalid, and provides strong link-change detection.

Completeness could be determined in the same way as usual (by solicitation),
and this issue can be avoided if any of the routers advertises a prefix,
as I indicated.

Greg

Hi Brett,
I brought up this issue with the IPv6 chairs during IETF66. At that
time I had requested that bits 6 and 7 be assigned to DNA. I sent this mail

http://www1.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ipv6/current/msg06561.html

to the IPv6 mailing list requesting the same. Also I do not see any
competing documents which require these bits to be assigned to them and
ahead of us on the standards track.

Cheers
Suresh

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Detecting Network Attachment Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Detecting Network Attachment in IPv6 Networks (DNAv6)
	Author(s)	: J. Kempf
	Filename	: draft-ietf-dna-protocol-04.txt
	Pages : 52
	Date : 2007-2-13

Efficient detection of network attachment in IPv6 needs the following
three components: a method for hosts to detect link change in the
presence of unmodified (non-DNAv6) routers, a method for the host to
query routers on the link to identify the link (Link Identification)
and a method for the routers on the link to consistently respond to
such a query with minimal delay (Fast RA). Solving the link
identification based strictly on RFC 2461 is difficult because of the
flexibility offered to routers in terms of prefixes advertised in a
router advertisement (RA) message. Similarly, the random delay in

responding to router solicitation messages imposed by RFC 2461 makes
it difficult to receive an RA quickly. In this memo, a mechanism
that requires the hosts to monitor all the prefixes advertised on the
link and use it for link identification in the presence of non-DNAv6
routers is presented. A more efficient link-identification mechanism
requiring the DNAv6 routers to monitor the link for advertised
prefixes to assist the hosts in link identification combined with a
fast router advertisement mechanism that selects the order of
response for the router deterministicly is also presented.

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-ietf-dna-protocol-04.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-dna-protocol-04.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

This version of the draft closes almost all open issues that were
discussed during last meeting. See "Changes since -03" section (I forgot
to remove the open issues section). We have a little over two-and-half
weeks before we can do another submission for IETF 68. That depends on
good review comments from somebody. I will try to read it over again
before that time. Please read the draft and send me comments.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Detecting Network Attachment Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Link-layer Event Notifications for Detecting Network Attachments
	Author(s)	: A. Yegin, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-dna-link-information-06.txt
	Pages : 24
	Date : 2007-2-16

Certain network access technologies are capable of providing various
types of link-layer status information to IP. Link-layer event
notifications can help IP expeditiously detect configuration changes.
This document provides a non-exhaustive catalogue of information
   available from well-known access technologies.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-dna-link-information-06.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-ietf-dna-link-information-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-dna-link-information-06.txt".

I have reviewed the -06 draft. It looks good.

Thanks to the authors for the work they have done to incorporate feedback.
