A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the DDoS Open Threat Signaling WG of the IETF.

        Title : Controlling Filtering Rules Using Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) Signal Channel
        Authors         : Kaname Nishizuka
                          Mohamed Boucadair
                          Tirumaleswar Reddy
                          Takahiko Nagata
	Filename        : draft-ietf-dots-signal-filter-control-03.txt
	Pages           : 26
	Date            : 2020-03-02

Abstract:
   This document specifies an extension to the DOTS signal channel
   protocol so that DOTS clients can control their filtering rules when
   an attack mitigation is active.

   Particularly, this extension allows a DOTS client to activate or de-
   activate existing filtering rules during a DDoS attack. The
   characterization of these filtering rules is supposed to be conveyed
   by a DOTS client during an idle time by means of the DOTS data
   channel protocol.

Editorial Note (To be removed by RFC Editor)

   Please update these statements within the document with the RFC
   number to be assigned to this document:

   o "This version of this YANG module is part of RFC XXXX;"

   o "RFC XXXX: Controlling Filtering Rules Using Distributed Denial-
      of-Service Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) Signal Channel";

   o  reference: RFC XXXX

   o  [RFCXXXX]

   Please update these statements with the RFC number to be assigned to
   the following documents:

   o "RFC SSSS: Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling
      (DOTS) Signal Channel Specification" (used to be
      [I-D.ietf-dots-signal-channel])

   o "RFC DDDD: Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling
      (DOTS) Data Channel Specification" (used to be
      [I-D.ietf-dots-data-channel])

   Please update the "revision" date of the YANG module.

Hi all,=20

As discussed in the DOTS telemetry thread, this version registers "ietf-dot=
s-signal-control:acl-list" and " ietf-dots-signal-control:acl-name" rather =
than using the key values already assigned to "acl-list" and "acl-name".

I prefer to fix this now so that Ben can use this version for his review.=20

Cheers,
Med

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the DDoS Open Threat Signaling WG of the IETF.

        Title : Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) Signal Channel Call Home
        Authors         : Tirumaleswar Reddy
                          Mohamed Boucadair
                          Jon Shallow
	Filename        : draft-ietf-dots-signal-call-home-08.txt
	Pages           : 37
	Date            : 2020-03-02

Abstract:
   This document specifies the DOTS signal channel Call Home, which
   enables a DOTS server to initiate a secure connection to a DOTS
   client, and to receive the attack traffic information from the DOTS
   client. The DOTS server in turn uses the attack traffic information
   to identify the compromised devices launching the outgoing DDoS
   attack and takes appropriate mitigation action(s).

   The DOTS signal channel Call Home is not specific to the home
   networks; the solution targets any deployment which requires to block
   DDoS attack traffic closer to the source(s) of a DDoS attack.

Editorial Note (To be removed by RFC Editor)

   Please update these statements within the document with the RFC
   number to be assigned to this document:

   o "This version of this YANG module is part of RFC XXXX;"

   o "RFC XXXX: Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling
      (DOTS) Signal Channel Call Home";

   o  "| [RFCXXXX] |"

   o  reference: RFC XXXX

   Please update this statement with the RFC number to be assigned to
   the following documents:

   o "RFC YYYY: Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling
      (DOTS) Signal Channel Specification (used to be I-D.ietf-dots-
      signal-channel)

   Please update TBD statements with the assignment made by IANA to DOTS
   Signal Channel Call Home.

   Also, please update the "revision" date of the YANG module.

Abstract:
   Denial-of-service Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) Telemetry enriches the
   base DOTS protocols to assist the mitigator in using efficient DDoS-
   attack-mitigation techniques in a network. This document presents
   sample use cases for DOTS Telemetry: what components are deployed in
   the network, how they cooperate, and what information is exchanged to
   effectively use these techniques.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the DDoS Open Threat Signaling WG of the IETF.

        Title : Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) Telemetry
        Authors         : Mohamed Boucadair
                          Tirumaleswar Reddy
                          Ehud Doron
                          Meiling Chen
	Filename        : draft-ietf-dots-telemetry-03.txt
	Pages           : 79
	Date            : 2020-03-02

Abstract:
   This document aims to enrich DOTS signal channel protocol with
   various telemetry attributes allowing optimal DDoS attack mitigation.
   This document specifies the normal traffic baseline and attack
   traffic telemetry attributes a DOTS client can convey to its DOTS
   server in the mitigation request, the mitigation status telemetry
   attributes a DOTS server can communicate to a DOTS client, and the
   mitigation efficacy telemetry attributes a DOTS client can
   communicate to a DOTS server. The telemetry attributes can assist
   the mitigator to choose the DDoS mitigation techniques and perform
   optimal DDoS attack mitigation.

Re-,

This version integrates the following changes:
* clarify why we are using enumerations instead of identities.
* allow for a telemetry request to include a pointer mitigation requests.
* update the CBOR key values table to request whenever it makes sense for "=
X" and " ietf-dots-telemetry:X".

Cheers,
Med

Abstract:
   This document describes an architecture for establishing and
   maintaining Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Open Threat
   Signaling (DOTS) within and between domains. The document does not
   specify protocols or protocol extensions, instead focusing on
   defining architectural relationships, components and concepts used in
   a DOTS deployment.

Hi,

With regard to 4)

Proposal: change MUST to SHOULD here.
```
DOTS agents MUST bind pre-mitigation telemetry data with mitigation
    requests relying upon the target clause.
(snip)
  An example illustrating requests correlation by means of 'target-prefix'
    is shown in Figure 22.
```

It is acceptable to relax this bind especially in the case of Figure 22 from operational perspective.
In this case, Pre-mitigation telemetry from the DOTS server to the client can be a hint to the upcoming mitigation request.
But it's not necessary to use the same prefix if an operator of the DOTS client wanted to do so.
Like that, it's not necessary to correlate this pre-mitigation telemetry and the mitigation request from the view point of the DOTS server because acknowledging there is the correlation will not affect the behavior of the DOTS server.

But, It IS necessary to correlate the mitigation request by mid with further telemetry information from DOTS server (maybe namely "post-mitigation" telemetry).

regards,
Kaname

The updated mapping table is: https://github.com/boucadair/draft-dots-telemetry/blob/master/mapping-table.txt (or https://github.com/boucadair/draft-dots-telemetry/blob/master/draft-ietf-dots-telemetry-03.txt) /*
> Jon1> Typo in megabite-ps

This is a huge increase in the number of bytes needed whenever unit (and measurement-interval Etc.) are used.  I think that this is a bad change.*//*

If telemetry attributes are defined as mandatory (discussed in another thread), this would mean that the server will reject a mitigation that includes such attributes. With the current design, we have a functionality that can be safely enabled independently of the decision that we will make about whether telemetry attributes are mandatory to be supported or not./*

Hi,

With regard to 4)

Proposal: change MUST to SHOULD here.
```
DOTS agents MUST bind pre-mitigation telemetry data with mitigation
   requests relying upon the target clause.
(snip)
 An example illustrating requests correlation by means of 'target-prefix'
   is shown in Figure 22.
```

It is acceptable to relax this bind especially in the case of Figure 22 fro=
m operational perspective.
In this case, Pre-mitigation telemetry from the DOTS server to the client c=
an be a hint to the upcoming mitigation request.
But it's not necessary to use the same prefix if an operator of the DOTS cl=
ient wanted to do so.
Like that, it's not necessary to correlate this pre-mitigation telemetry an=
d the mitigation request from the view point of the DOTS server because ack=
nowledging there is the correlation will not affect the behavior of the DOT=
S server.

But, It IS necessary to correlate the mitigation request by mid with furthe=
r telemetry information from DOTS server (maybe namely "post-mitigation" te=
lemetry).

Kaname

Objet : DOTS telemetry questions

Hi Guys,

1)      For example CBOR mappings

     Header: PUT (Code=3D0.03)
     Uri-Path: ".well-known"
     Uri-Path: "dots"
     Uri-Path: "mitigate"
     Uri-Path: "cuid=3Ddz6pHjaADkaFTbjr0JGBpw"
     Uri-Path: "mid=3D123"
     If-Match:
     Content-Format: "application/dots+cbor"

     {
      "ietf-dots-signal-channel:mitigation-scope": {
        "scope": [
          {
            "alias-name": [
               "myserver"
             ],
            "attack-status": "under-attack",
            "ietf-dots-telemetry:total-attack-traffic": [
              {
                "ietf-dots-telemetry:unit": "megabytes-ps",
                "ietf-dots-telemetry:mid-percentile-g": "900"
              }
            ]
          }
        ]
      }
     }

    Figure 33: An Example of Mitigation Efficacy Update with Telemetry
                                Attributes

And yet the mapping table only has (no ietf-dots-telemetry: prefix)

    | total-attack-traffic | list        |32794 | 4 array       | Array  |

I appreciate that ietf-dots-telemetry:total-attack-traffic and total-attack=
 traffic are the same CBOR value (or are they?)
[Med] The same value is used but I didn't check if there are side effects.
Jon> Need to think this through. My implementation maps the CBOR into JSON=
 and then works on the JSON to do what is necessary and then converts the J=
SON response back into CBOR.
[Med] An issue with namespaces will be the encountered if the conversion is=
 the same for the attribute when it is carried in a "pure" telemetry messag=
e or in an existing signal channel message.
Jon1> Correct - I don't like the concept of having 2 mapping tables for map=
ping the CBOR value back into JSON.

Jon> We have the same naming issues in draft-ietf-dots-signal-filter-contr=
ol-00 where we do not have the ietf-dots-signal-control: prefix in the JSON=
 examples (Fig 10)

[Med] Fig 10 is a "normal" mitigation request. Why should it need to includ=
e "ietf-dots-signal-control:" prefix?

Jon1> My bad - I was looking at draft-ietf-dots-signal-filter-control-00, n=
ot draft-ietf-dots-signal-filter-control-02.  However, https://tools.ietf.o=
rg/html/draft-ietf-dots-signal-filter-control-02#section-5.1 only defines "=
activation-type" without the prefix, and acl-list and acl-name have the inc=
orrect prefix: added to, for example, Figure 1.

Please note that we have this note is section 10:

=3D=3D
   o Some of these attributes should be prepended with "ietf-dots-
      telemetry:"
=3D=3D

but when mapping the CBOR back to JSON the variant of JSON parameter is con=
text (Uri-Path: mitigate or tm) dependent.

2) why do we not have a "enum megabit-ps" in "typedef unit" in the YAN=
G Module?

[Med] This can be added to the list as 'units()' are negotiated. *-bytes a=
re more used for aggregates, but let's be consistent and have both bit/byte=
s in the units.

Jon> Megabytes works with aggregates, megabits works with pipes.

[Med] I added the unit to the module. BTW, in order to easily define new un=
its, I updated the module so that units are defined as identities, not enum=
erations. The updated mapping table is: https://github.com/boucadair/draft-=
dots-telemetry/blob/master/mapping-table.txt (or https://github.com/boucada=
ir/draft-dots-telemetry/blob/master/draft-ietf-dots-telemetry-03.txt)

Jon1> Typo in megabite-ps

Jon1> I am not sure about the usage of identityref. https://tools.ietf.org=
/html/rfc7951#section-6.8 states that the value is represented as a string =
(currently the CBOR mapping entry says it is an integer), and furthermore i=
t is likely that the namespace-qualified form is required. This is a huge i=
ncrease in the number of bytes needed whenever unit (and measurement-interv=
al Etc.) are used. I think that this is a bad change.

3)      I think that I have worked out that server-originated-telemetry if =
set allows telemetry included in the mitigation status rather than only ret=
urned using Uri-path: tm - correct?

[Med] I confirm. Note that including pre-mitigation returned using "Uri-pat=
h:tm" is controlled by PUT/GET (Section 7.3).

Jon> Agreed.

4) I am confused by "pre-mitigation" which can be transmitted pre any =
mitigation taking place, or actually during when mitigation is taking place=
 (or so I think) and would simply be better described as "attack-details" -=
 especially with a statement such as

   DOTS agents MUST bind pre-mitigation telemetry data with mitigation

   requests relying upon the target clause.

[Med] That's an option but the current design allows to have the telemetry =
in // in order to supply more data ** without impacting the placement of a =
mitigation request ** hence the need to bind both (if any). If telemetry at=
tributes are defined as mandatory (discussed in another thread), this would=
 mean that the server will reject a mitigation that includes such attribute=
s. With the current design, we have a functionality that can be safely enab=
led independently of the decision that we will make about whether telemetry=
 attributes are mandatory to be supported or not.

Jon> My primary point here was the use of the term "pre-mitigation" - this =
telemetry is also needs during a mitigation and the attack keeps on morphin=
g into something else.

[Med] I see your point. We will see if we can find a better term.

Jon1> Agreed - it is the "pre" that certainly does not work for me. Someth=
ing like "attack information" ?

Another point we can check to ease correlation between a mitigation request=
 and pre-mitigation telemetry is to signal the "mid" in the telemetry messa=
ge.

Jon> could be - need to think this through

[Med] Let's think about this one further.

Jon1> Sure - this may come out in the wash as we try to implement this stuf=
f.

Regards

Jon

<br>
With regard to 4)<br>
<br>
Proposal: change MUST to SHOULD here.<br>
```<br>
DOTS agents MUST bind pre-mitigation telemetry data with mitigation<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp; requests relying upon the target clause.<br>
(snip)<br>
&nbsp;An example illustrating requests correlation by means of 'target-pref=
ix'<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp; is shown in Figure 22.<br>
```<br>
<br>
It is acceptable to relax this bind especially in the case of Figure 22 fro=
m operational perspective.<br>
In this case, Pre-mitigation telemetry from the DOTS server to the client c=
an be a hint to the upcoming mitigation request.<br>
But it's not necessary to use the same prefix if an operator of the DOTS cl=
ient wanted to do so.<br>
Like that, it's not necessary to correlate this pre-mitigation telemetry an=
d the mitigation request from the view point of the DOTS server because ack=
nowledging there is the correlation will not affect the behavior of the DOT=
S server.<br>
<br>
But, It IS necessary to correlate the mitigation request by mid with furthe=
r telemetry information from DOTS server (maybe namely &quot;post-mitigatio=
n&quot; telemetry).<br>

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the DDoS Open Threat Signaling WG of the IETF.

        Title : Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) Telemetry
        Authors         : Mohamed Boucadair
                          Tirumaleswar Reddy
                          Ehud Doron
                          Meiling Chen
	Filename        : draft-ietf-dots-telemetry-04.txt
	Pages           : 82
	Date            : 2020-03-19

Hi all,=20

This version takes into account the comments from Jon and Kaname. The main =
changes are:
* add some text about auto-scaling so that an agent picks the appropriate u=
nit when sending telemetry data.
* add some source-* attributes to echo what we do already have in the call =
home.
* add some text about how long telemetry data is logged and updated.=20
* add text about retrieval of timid when a client crashes.=20

And some other edits and nits fixed.=20

Cheers,
Med

This draft is a work item of the DDoS Open Threat Signaling WG of the IETF.

        Title : Distributed Denial-of-Service Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) Telemetry
        Authors         : Mohamed Boucadair
                          Tirumaleswar Reddy
                          Ehud Doron
                          Meiling Chen
	Filename        : draft-ietf-dots-telemetry-05.txt
	Pages           : 83
	Date            : 2020-03-27

Abstract:
   This document aims to enrich DOTS signal channel protocol with
   various telemetry attributes allowing optimal DDoS attack mitigation.
   It specifies the normal traffic baseline and attack traffic telemetry
   attributes a DOTS client can convey to its DOTS server in the
   mitigation request, the mitigation status telemetry attributes a DOTS
   server can communicate to a DOTS client, and the mitigation efficacy
   telemetry attributes a DOTS client can communicate to a DOTS server.
   The telemetry attributes can assist the mitigator to choose the DDoS
   mitigation techniques and perform optimal DDoS attack mitigation.
