Hi Folks,

till the time i hear your thoughts, thought of updating my question a lill =
bit.
i think in case of using a specific convergence layer for a perticular=20
interface (DTN interface),it might be helpful to update the link add comman=
d=20
Which would take an interface name instead of the conv layer name, in such
cases. i think this would help the link differentiate amongst instances of=
 the=20
conv layer Info's of multiple interfaces (?) 'coz in that case conv layer
Infos of different interfaces might be holding say the conv layer
specific process handles (?)

2. on one of my linux boxes , the daemon is giving me linking error=20
dtnd: error while loading shared libraries: libdb-4.3.so: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

prior to compling the complete source i have made it sure that the Berkeley=
 db
is in proper place. and also that=20
i have a proper LT_LIBRARY_PATH set up.

(well.. and the other thing is that my old daemon copy works just fine !!! )

any thoughts on that ...

your help is always appreciated..
thanx in advance.

Hi ,

i have a question regarding the routing of bundle acks
(status reports).

(case 1) the interface add command by defaults creates
a DTN interface with given conv layer that starts listening
on all physical links(i.e. actual hardware interfaces) on
the given port.

(case 2) if we want to use a specific conv layer on a
specific physical link the interface add command would be
told to listen on that physical link
( we give a local_host::port for that ).

and then we can add a link to the specific destination host.

my question is that in later case (case 2) when we add a
link, it is one directional link. i.e. the receiver node
(which also has added a DTN interface in similar way as
that of the DTN sender node) doesn't have a link (and corresponding
route) to the source node. So how actually the bundle receipts
would come/routed back.

after digging thr', i was able to understand that 'bundle_received' event
gets fired locally for the status report generated. but was kindda
lost after that with above query.

do we need add a route locally at the receiver node for the bundle-source
immediately after the budle is received.(i konw that doesn't sound good :-))

any thoughts folks..

JAy

This is an announcement of the 2.2.0 release of the DTN reference
implementation. The source and documentation are available at
http://www.dtnrg.org/wiki/Code.

The major changes since the last version are:

- Various changes for conformance with version 4 of the bundle
protocol as specified in the Bundle Protocol Internet Draft, as
  released on November 2005.

- Initial implementation of custody transfer, including
flexible per-route timing specifications for retransmissions.

- Initial implementation of a Bluetooth convergence layer from Jeff
  Wilson <Jeff_Wilson@baylor.edu>.

- Added support for the ARM architecture, gcc 4.0, and BerkeleyDB 4.4.

- Added support for a file system based persistent storage
implementation as an alternative to Berkeley DB.

- Many minor changes to improve stability and robustness of the code,
largely due to an improved testing infrastructure including several
  tcl based system tests.

- Miscellaneous other improvements including: a persistent
ForwardingLog for each bundle to maintain the history of where (and
when) the bundle was sent to peers, restored support for reactive
fragmentation, a NullConvergenceLayer and other testing hooks, and
  some scalability improvements.

In addition, this release is also available as a binary debian package
for the stable debian release (sarge) on x86, as well as in source
form through the apt package management system. Add the following
lines to /etc/apt/sources.list:

   deb http://www.dtnrg.org/debian stable contrib
   deb-src http://www.dtnrg.org/debian stable contrib

The package is called 'dtn'.

Enjoy!

I was a first time visitor to a face-to-face DTNRG meeting yesterday.
I felt very privileged to have the chance to meet some of my heroes
from this list and dtn-interest: Michael Demmer, Anders Lindgren,
Susan Symington, Robert Durst, Kevin Fall, Scott Burleigh, Stephen
Farrell, Darcy Kroeker, and too many others to mention. Email lists
are great and all, but you sure can make a lot more progress with a
face-to-face at times!

All propz aside, I have some random brain dump to share with whoever's
interested -- I'm guessing that will mainly be Mike and the Berkeley
folks -- whoever you are, if you are interested in reading my loosely
organized ramblings on the Bluetooth (RFCOMM) Convergence Layer,
please contact me off-list and I will send you a Word document (or
HTML if you prefer).

     Best regards,
       Jeff Wilson

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your kind reply.
I'm seeing lots of messages after using the -l debug option.
I'll look into this.

Have a great weekend.

Unfortunately there is no real comprehensive documentation of the

My best suggestion for how to learn more about the code is to turn on

Thanks for the document, Brad. I put it into HTML and put it into the
DTN2 manual. You'll be able to see it tomorrow in the anonymous CVS
repository, and in the next release of DTN2. It is named "tutorial 3"
in the manual.

Hi all,

Has anyone thought about implementing a convergence layer for the
linux kernel's ax.25 support? Also, is anyone doing anything with
python bindings?

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your reply.
Now, I have the desired result for dtnping.

However, I got subsequent problems, which is natural.
I tried to follow the instructions of the manual, but error messages.

Is there any suggested guideline or milestone to build up capability to
solve encountering problems? I guess reading the source codes might be
one solution, but sometimes it's not the most efficient way. As a matter
of fact, I don't know where to start. That would be great if I know
where to start. For example, which files should be read first...

The reason I ask you this is I thought I may be able to solve these
errors by myself, not by posting questions here. This can be done if I
understand what's going on with those commands such as dtnsend, dtnrecv,
and so on.

Thank you in advance and have a great day!

Sincerely,
Tae-hyung

The format is literally the string "localhost", as follows:

This error says that the application can't talk to the dtnd daemon,
which most likely means that hte DTN daemon is not running when you're
trying to run dtnping.

Yes. Sort of.

The reason this latest release is called "2.1.99" is that I wanted to
put something out there but didn't finish the job to get it up to the
spec.

Stay tuned in the next couple weeks for a 2.2 release that implements
the full v4 spec.

Hi folks,

i have a quick question regarding the latest release of=20
DTN ref implementation.

the primary bundle header shows version 0x04 but the=20
rest of the header fields are still following the spec3=20
norms..=20
(i.e.=20
1.Status reporting request flags are missing=20
from the PrimaryHeader1. so they are neither written
into the onwire bundle buf nor parsed back.
2. i suppose same kindda flags would be there in
BundlePayLoad also... e.g. is_last,discard_bundle etc.

3. format and parse cos methods ... etc...
)

i think it might have been because of constant updates=20
to the source. so even though the header version field
was updated the rest of the header would eventually follow. :-)

is that correct mike...

Dear DTN2 users,

=20

I installed the most recent release of the DTN2 reference
implementation, DTN-2.1.99.

I am trying to follow up the manual,
http://www.dtnrg.org/docs/code/DTN2/doc/manual/

=20

- My question is "What is the correct format of "localhost" to use
dtnping?"

=20

On this page of the manual,
http://www.dtnrg.org/docs/code/DTN2/doc/manual/tutorial-1.html

there is a section of "Pinging the daemon". In this section, the
following command is given,

=20

$ ./dtnping localhost
source_eid [dtn://dtn-a.dtn/ping.2384]
replyto_eid [dtn://dtn-a.dtn/ping.2384]
dtn_register succeeded, regid 0x11
checking for bundles already queued...
PING [dtn://dtn-a.dtn/]...
68 bytes from [dtn://dtn-a.dtn]: time=3D161.00 ms
68 bytes from [dtn://dtn-a.dtn]: time=3D228.00 ms
Ctrl-C

=20

If I repeat the question, what should "localhost" look like?

If I type in the Tcl command "info hostname", I can see the format is

=20

localhost.localdomain

=20

computer1:/DTN2# dtnd

[1142033750.216797 /dtnd notice] DTN daemon starting up... (pid 25058)

[1142033750.220563 /dtnd notice] random seed is 220561

warning: `/root/.tclsh-history' is not writable.

dtn% info hostname

localhost.localdomain

=20

However, this is not clear to me.

=20

Can you tell me some more details with example how to use dtnping?

More specifically, say, my URL is "computer1.department.school.edu",
what should be the "localhost"?

In addition, how can I retrieve the necessary information? Equivalently,
what Linux commands should I type in?

For example, "$ echo HOSTNAME" will show the content of the environment
variable HOSTNAME, and this corresponds to "computer1" of my URL.

=20

For your information, I see the following error message if I use the URL
for "localhost".

=20

computer1:/DTN2/apps/dtnping# ./dtnping computer1.department.school.edu

fatal error opening dtn handle: Connection refused

=20

Thank you in advance and I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.
:-)

Have a GREAT weekend.!

=20

Yours truly,

Tae-hyung

Neato!

You might want to take a look at oasys/test-utils/tell-utils.tcl. It's
the basis for some test script driver code that we've been using here
that can send commands to the tcl interpreter.

The basic deal is that if you send a single line of "tell_encode" to
the console socket, then it goes into a remote management mode with a
couple changes to the normal interactive mode:

- there is no more "dtn% " prompt

- any time the interpreter sends back a response, it is preceded by
"0 " or "1 ", indicating success or tcl error, respectively

- all newlines in the response are replaced with "\n" so you just need
to read a single line from the socket, then do a regexp substitution
to get back the full, potentially multiline response

anyway, hope that's useful to you -- let me know if you have qns.

I wrote a small Python script to 'auto-configure' DTN daemons' routes
by propagating registration and routing information via UDP. The
combination of DHCP / dynamic DNS / windows within MITRE means that
hostnames can change, and I got tired of having to manually configure
routes on multiple machines (and the daemon just barfs if you've got a
hostname that won't resolve in the dtn.conf file).
=20
When invoked, the Python script will communicate with the tcl
interpreter of a running local dtn2 daemon, and will transmit
information about the daemon's local registrations and routes to peer
scripts running on other dtn machines. The peer scripts consume the
information and manipulate their daemons routing tables (again via the
tcl interpreter). Thus if you have N two-interface machines in a
daisy-chain topology and each runs this script, it will eventually
propagate routing information all along the chain. By default the
script will transmit to the broadcast addresses of all interfaces that
report a 'brd' attribute via 'ip addr show'. You can also supply a
list of explicit addresses (broadcast and/or unicast).

Note that this is NOT supposed to be a 'real' routing protocol.
There's no distance reported, routes don't age out, there's no conflict
resolution whatsoever, ... I almost got something like this running
over bundles by generating a route to a destination (dtn://llb) that
used a UDP link entry destined for the subnet broadcast address.
Unfortunately, I also need to listen for such bundles (from my peers)
and when I forward a bundle, I also receive it and dutifully attempted
to forward it again. This is amusing, but not particularly useful. I
wonder if a route type of something like 'INITIATE_ONLY' might be
useful.
=20
In any case, the script is dnd.py (DTN Neighbor Discovery) in the apps
directory.
=20
Caveats:
Be sure that 'console set port XXXX' is in your dtn.conf file and that
the port variable is set in the Python script reflects its value.=20
This thing assumes that each daemon is running a TCP convergence layer
that is listening on the port from which the UDP transmissions emanate.
Probably others. If you use this and find bugs, please let me know.
