The following question has come up in the WiMAX Forum with respect to
EAP-TLS peer certificate usage:

>From RFC 3280:
When the subjectAltName extension contains an Internet mail address,
the address MUST be included as an rfc822Name. The format of an
rfc822Name is an "addr-spec" as defined in RFC 822 [RFC 822]. An
addr-spec has the form "local-part@domain". Note that an addr-spec
has no phrase (such as a common name) before it, has no comment (text
surrounded in parentheses) after it, and is not surrounded by "<" and
">". Note that while upper and lower case letters are allowed in an
RFC 822 addr-spec, no significance is attached to the case.

The question is whether any NAI as defined in RFC 4282 meets these
requirements for inclusion in subjectAltName using the rfc822Name format.

For example, what if an NAI does not contain a realm portion?

My personal take is that as long as the NAI is legal within RFC 4282, it
should be legal for inclusion in the subjectAltName field using the
rfc822Name format. This seems preferrable to registering a new type-id.

RFC4383 is a superset of RFC822. If a name does not conform to RFC822
then it will not be compliant with RFC3280. Within a specific community
where everyone has a common understanding of how the extension will be
used then this is probably OK. If you plan on using the certificates
more generically then it is possible that you will run into problems. =20

Actually, RFC 4282 is not a superset of RFC822 addr-spec. There=20
are some weird corner cases that are valid RFC822 addr-spec's but=20
not valid NAIs.

For example, RFC822 allows quoting a space with double quotes
("john doe"@example.org), but RFC4282 has only backslash-quoting.
I'm sure other similar cases exist, but probably they don't really
have any impact on real-world deployments.

Best regards,
Pasi

looks good, except I think that there can be only one Subject Name field
in a valid certificate. How about something like:=20

"It is possible for more than one subjectAltName field to be present
in a peer or server certificate; similarly, it is possible for a
non-empty subject name field to also be present in a peer or server
certificate. In this case, EAP-TLS may export more than one Peer-Id
or more than one Server-Id; all of the exported Peer-Id(s) and
Server-Id(s) are considered=20
valid. "

At the EMU WG meeting, we discussed the situation where more
than one altsubjectName or subject field are present in a certificate.
Here is some text which can be added to the end of Section 5.2 to
address this issue:

"It is possible for more than one subjectAltName field to be

A question has arisen about the reference to RFC 2818 section 3.1 within Se=
ction 5.3:
=20
When performing this comparison implementations MUST follow the valida=
tion rules specified in [RFC2818] Section 3.1. In the case of the server=
this involves ensuring the certificate presented by the EAP-TLS peer was=
intended to be used as a client certificate. Implementations SHOULD use =
the Extended Key Usage (see [RFC3280] Section 4.2.1.13) extension and ens=
ure that at least one of the following is true: 1) The certificate issu=
er included no Extended Key Usage identifiers in the certificate. 2)=
The issuer included the anyExtendedKeyUsage identifier in the certifi=
cate (see [RFC3280] section 4.2.1.13). 3) The issuer included the id-kp-c=
lientAuth identifier in the certificate (see [RFC3280] section 4.2.1.1=
3).=20
=20
Here is the text from that reference:
=20
3.1. Server Identity In general, HTTP/TLS requests are generated by dere=
ferencing a URI. As a consequence, the hostname for the server is known t=
o the client. If the hostname is available, the client MUST check it agai=
nst the server's identity as presented in the server's Certificate messag=
e, in order to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. If the client has ext=
ernal information as to the expected identity of the server, the hostname=
check MAY be omitted. (For instance, a client may be connecting to a mac=
hine whose address and hostname are dynamic but the client knows the cert=
ificate that the server will present.) In such cases, it is important to =
narrow the scope of acceptable certificates as much as possible in order =
to prevent man in the middle attacks. In special cases, it may be approp=
riate for the client to simply ignore the server's identity, but it must =
be understood that this leaves the connection open to active attack. If=
a subjectAltName extension of type dNSName is present, that MUST be used=
as the identity. Otherwise, the (most specific) Common Name field in the=
Subject field of the certificate MUST be used. Although the use of the C=
ommon Name is existing practice, it is deprecated and Certification Autho=
rities are encouraged to use the dNSName instead. Matching is performed u=
sing the matching rules specified by [RFC2459]. If more than one identit=
y of a given type is present in the certificate (e.g., more than one dNSN=
ame name, a match in any one of the set is considered acceptable.) Names =
may contain the wildcard character * which is considered to match any sin=
gle domain name component or component fragment. E.g., *.a.com matches fo=
o.a.com but not bar.foo.a.com. f*.com matches foo.com but not bar.com. =
In some cases, the URI is specified as an IP address rather than a hostna=
me. In this case, the iPAddress subjectAltName must be present in the cer=
tificate and must exactly match the IP in the URI. If the hostname does n=
ot match the identity in the certificate, user oriented clients MUST eith=
er notify the user (clients MAY give the user the opportunity to continue=
with the connection in any case) or terminate the connection with a bad =
certificate error. Automated clients MUST log the error to an appropriate=
audit log (if available) and SHOULD terminate the connection (with a bad=
certificate error). Automated clients MAY provide a configuration settin=
g that disables this check, but MUST provide a setting which enables it. =
Note that in many cases the URI itself comes from an untrusted source. =
The above-described check provides no protection against attacks where th=
is source is compromised. For example, if the URI was obtained by clickin=
g on an HTML page which was itself obtained without using HTTP/TLS, a man=
in the middle could have replaced the URI. In order to prevent this for=
m of attack, users should carefully examine the certificate presented by =
the server to determine if it meets their expectations.
=20
Overall, this reference does seem to have some relevance to the issues disc=
ussed in Section 5.3. In terms of relevance to EAP-TLS, there is typically=
no URL. In some cases EAP-TLS server hostname and IP address are not kno=
wn before authentication, and so cannot be compared to the Server-Id (e.g. =
802.11), but in other cases this might be possible (e.g. VPN). Paragraphs=
5-6 seem relevant, but paragraph 7 is probably not relevant. Given this, =
my inclination is to keep the reference to RFC 2818, but make it normative =
(since there is a MUST reference to it). =

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the EAP Method Update Working Group of the IETF.

Title : The EAP TLS Authentication Protocol
	Author(s)	: D. Simon, B. Aboba
	Filename	: draft-simon-emu-rfc2716bis-09.txt
	Pages : 31
	Date : 2007-5-8

The Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), defined in RFC 3748,
provides support for multiple authentication methods. Transport
Level Security (TLS) provides for mutual authentication, integrity-
protected ciphersuite negotiation and key exchange between two
endpoints. This document defines EAP-TLS, which includes support for
certificate-based mutual authentication and key derivation.

This document obsoletes RFC 2716. A summary of the changes between
this document and RFC 2716 is available in Appendix A.

MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on

So would the section be revised to clarify when 2818 would be
applicable, such as when the hostname and DNS are known ahead of time?

	Subject: [Emu] RFC 2818 reference
=09
=09

A question has arisen about the reference to RFC 2818 section
3.1 within Section 5.3:
	=20
When performing this comparison implementations MUST follow
the
validation rules specified in [RFC2818] Section 3.1. In the
case of
the server this involves ensuring the certificate presented
by the
EAP-TLS peer was intended to be used as a client certificate.
Implementations SHOULD use the Extended Key Usage (see
[RFC3280]
Section 4.2.1.13) extension and ensure that at least one of
the
	   following is true:
=09
	   1) The certificate issuer included no Extended Key Usage
	      identifiers in the certificate.
	   2) The issuer included the anyExtendedKeyUsage identifier in
the certificate (see [RFC3280] section 4.2.1.13).
	   3) The issuer included the id-kp-clientAuth identifier in
the certificate (see [RFC3280] section 4.2.1.13).=20
	=20
Here is the text from that reference:
	=20
	3.1. Server Identity
=09
In general, HTTP/TLS requests are generated by dereferencing
a URI.
As a consequence, the hostname for the server is known to the
client.
If the hostname is available, the client MUST check it
against the
server's identity as presented in the server's Certificate
message,
in order to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.
=09
If the client has external information as to the expected
identity of
the server, the hostname check MAY be omitted. (For instance,
a
client may be connecting to a machine whose address and
hostname are
dynamic but the client knows the certificate that the server
will
present.) In such cases, it is important to narrow the scope
of
acceptable certificates as much as possible in order to
prevent man
in the middle attacks. In special cases, it may be
appropriate for
the client to simply ignore the server's identity, but it
must be
understood that this leaves the connection open to active
attack.
=09
If a subjectAltName extension of type dNSName is present,
that MUST
be used as the identity. Otherwise, the (most specific)
Common Name
field in the Subject field of the certificate MUST be used.
Although
the use of the Common Name is existing practice, it is
deprecated and
Certification Authorities are encouraged to use the dNSName
instead.
=09
Matching is performed using the matching rules specified by
[RFC2459]. If more than one identity of a given type is
present in
the certificate (e.g., more than one dNSName name, a match in
any one
of the set is considered acceptable.) Names may contain the
wildcard
character * which is considered to match any single domain
name
component or component fragment. E.g., *.a.com matches
foo.a.com but
	   not bar.foo.a.com. f*.com matches foo.com but not bar.com.
=09
In some cases, the URI is specified as an IP address rather
than a
hostname. In this case, the iPAddress subjectAltName must be
present
in the certificate and must exactly match the IP in the URI.
=09
If the hostname does not match the identity in the
certificate, user
oriented clients MUST either notify the user (clients MAY
give the
user the opportunity to continue with the connection in any
case) or
terminate the connection with a bad certificate error.
Automated
clients MUST log the error to an appropriate audit log (if
available)
and SHOULD terminate the connection (with a bad certificate
error).
Automated clients MAY provide a configuration setting that
disables
this check, but MUST provide a setting which enables it.
=09
Note that in many cases the URI itself comes from an
untrusted
source. The above-described check provides no protection
against
attacks where this source is compromised. For example, if the
URI was
obtained by clicking on an HTML page which was itself
obtained
without using HTTP/TLS, a man in the middle could have
replaced the
URI. In order to prevent this form of attack, users should
carefully
examine the certificate presented by the server to determine
if it
	   meets their expectations.
	=20
Overall, this reference does seem to have some relevance to the
issues discussed in Section 5.3. In terms of relevance to EAP-TLS,
there is typically no URL. In some cases EAP-TLS server hostname and
IP address are not known before authentication, and so cannot be
compared to the Server-Id (e.g. 802.11), but in other cases this might
be possible (e.g. VPN). Paragraphs 5-6 seem relevant, but paragraph 7
is probably not relevant. Given this, my inclination is to keep the
reference to RFC 2818, but make it normative (since there is a MUST
reference to it).=20

Yes, probably, but for EAP-TLS what we are talking about are names for
the same entity which are the peer or the server. =20

I think new definitions are needed for these other concepts, which are
not currently part of EAP-TLS.=20
