This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, entmib-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

If you have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to
mailman-owner@www1.ietf.org. Thanks!

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Entity MIB Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Entity State MIB
	Author(s)	: S. Chisholm, D. Perkins
	Filename	: draft-ietf-entmib-state-01.txt
	Pages : 22
	Date : 2003-7-3

This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB)
for use with network management protocols in the Internet community.
In particular, it describes extensions to the entity MIB to
provide information about the state of the entity.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-entmib-state-01.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-entmib-state-01.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-entmib-state-01.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

There was an error in the last monthly reminder, in that the NOTE WELL
statement (below) was not included. Therefore, the reminder is being
sent out again.

                              Note Well

All statements related to the activities of the IETF and addressed to
the IETF are subject to all provisions of Section 10 of RFC 2026,
which grants to the IETF and its participants certain licenses and
rights in such statements. Such statements include verbal statements
in IETF meetings, as well as written and electronic communications
made at any time or place, which are addressed to

        * the IETF plenary session,
        * any IETF working group or portion thereof,
        * the IESG, or any member thereof on behalf of the IESG,
        * the IAB or any member thereof on behalf of the IAB,
        * any IETF mailing list, including the IETF list itself, any
working
group or design team list, or any other list functioning
under IETF
            auspices,
        * the RFC Editor or the Internet-Drafts function

Statements made outside of an IETF meeting, mailing list or other
function, that are clearly not intended to be input to an IETF
activity, group or function, are not subject to these provisions.

I have read draft-ietf-entmib-state-01.txt and I generally like this
document. Below are some comments, many of them are editorial, others
ask for more discussion of relationships to other MIBs. But I also
understand that this can be done later when the document is revised.

a) Typo in section 2: "so this term us substituted".

b) Typo in section 2.1: "interesting issues not addresses in existing work"

c) Typo in section 2.2: "It also compare this combination of states"

d) state 'lock' for entStateAdmin of a container?

e) entStatAdmin is actually entStateAdmin

f) state 'active' for entStateUsage of a power supply?

g) state 'active' for entStateUsage of a fan?

h) Relationship of the entState* objects to the dot1dStpPortEnable of
   the BRIDGE-MIB?

i) Relationship of the entState* objects to the hrDeviceStatus of
   the HOST-RESOURCES-MIB?

j) Relationship of the entState* objects to the objects using the
   SubUnitStatus TC of the Printer-MIB?

k) Is my understanding correct that alarmOutstanding(5) of the
AlarmStatus TC is set when at least one of critical(2), major(3),
minor(4), warning(6), indeterminate(7) is set? If not, the
   explanation can probably improved. ;-)

l) Implementation of the notifications is unconditionally optional?

m) In the security section, you may want to explain that access to the
objects defined in this MIB allows to figure out what the active
and standby resources in a network are and that this information
can be used to optimize attacks on networks. So even read-only
access to this MIB should be properly protected.

y) In general, the description of the states for each combination of
entity class and state value is incomplete (see d,e,f above). What
is the interpretation of combinations not mentioned in the text?
Are such combinations simply undefined but not illegal or are they
   illegal?

Overall, I like this very much. A simple but highly useful addition
to the ENTITY-MIB.

Here are my comments. They are grouped in two categories, 'substantive' =
and 'editorial'.

Substantive Comments:

A1) If entStateAdmin is to be made a read-write object, there is a need =
for more clarity about what values are allowed to be set on write =
operations. I assume that 'notSupported' is not a writeable value. but =
how is a physical entity shut down? by setting the value of =
entStateAdmin to 'shuttingDown' or to 'locked'?
A2) I perceive a problem with the way 'usage state' is being defined and =
modeled. The distinction between 'active' and 'busy' is not clear. The =
difference between the two should be whether the entity has spare =
capacity to serve additional 'users'. A phrase in section 2 mentions =
that 'In the context of this MIB, the user is equivalent to an entity', =
and I do not really know how to interpret this. Can entStateUsage of an =
entity of type powerSupply have a value of 'active' if it does not =
provide all amperage it is capable of, or only 'busy' is acceptable, as =
2.3.4.3 seems to indicate? Same question for a fan, that supports =
several speeds?=20
A3) AlarmStatusTC - what does setting notSupported(0) bit mean? Is not =
this same as indeterminate(7)?
A4) StandbyStatus TC - I think that there is a need to define a new =
value for 'load-sharing', even if this is not defined in X.731
A5) Notifications - first the names are very confusing - they are called =
OperEnabled and OperDisabled, while they carry only entStateAdmin, and =
entStateAlarm objects. I think that at least entStateOper should be =
added. It also is not defined when these notifications are supposed to =
be sent.=20
A6) The Security Considerations section should clearly articulate the =
operational risks of writing on entStateAdmin.
A7) Section 2.2.1 - A corrective action is not necessary in all cases to =
make an entity available for use. In some cases setting the admin state =
to unlock should be enough.

Editorial Comments
B1) Intellectual Property section is missing
B2) Entity MIB and entity MIB are capitalized in an un-consistent manner =
in the document. I suggest to use Entity MIB all over, starting with the =
Abstract section.
B3) What is the 'existing IETF model' mentioned in the first paragraph =
of Section 2?
B4) Also in the first paragraph in Section 2, replace 'leveraged' by =
'leverage'.
B5) Section 2.1, first paragraph - replace 'addresses' by 'addressed'
B6) Section 2.2 'compares' instead of 'compare'
B7) I understand that 'state' and 'status' are interchangeable in this =
document, but from a style point of view, the same noun should be used =
in the same phrase. See second paragraph in 2.2
B8) All section 2.3 should be better organized. The way it is written, =
it is not clear why some values are being omitted. It would be useful to =
re-write it in a tabular manner, and be specific what values are =
relevant for each entPhysicalType and each object.
B9) replace 'chassis' by 'container'
B10) 2.3.5.2 is incomprehensible
B11) 2.3.9.1, 2.3.9.2 - replace 'system' by 'stack'.=20
B12) 2.4. - key word not capitalized
B13) several DESCRIPTION clauses in the MIB would gain in readability if =
enumerated value significance is written in separated lines

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Dan

Regards,

Dan

Entity MIB Minutes
Tuesday, July 15, 2003
IETF 57 -- Vienna, Austria
==========================

CHAIR:	Margaret Wasserman <mrw@windriver.com>

AGENDA:

Introduction and Agenda Bashing -- Margaret Wasserman (5 min)

Entity MIB Open Issues (if any) -- Andy Bierman (15 min)
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-entmib-v3-01.txt

Entity State MIB Open Issues (if any) -- Sharon Chisholm (15 min)
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-entmib-state-01.txt

Status/Milestone Update and Next Steps -- Margaret Wasserman (10 min)

ENTITY MIB

Andy presented one slide of changes made since last IETF,
all based on consensus from the last meeting.

Discussion of whether we need implementation reports available
before WG last call. Those in the room were comfortable with
the implementation information they've seen, and thought that
it would be okay to start the last call in parallel with
completing the implementation report.

Entity MIB will be sent to WGLC for DS after the IETF.

ENTITY STATE MIB

Sharon presented the open issues with the Entity State MIB.

Andy commented that he likes the addition of the "not
supported" choice, as it is easier for application
develoers.

Some discussion of the meaning of states, and their
relationship to X.731. We have added some values, and
we have not supported all of their states. In particular,
we are having trouble deciding how to interpret the
usage state values.

Dan commented that the draft is unclear on the distinction
between 'active' and 'busy' for usage state. It is obvious
for containers, but not for physical entities like power
supplies. Needs clarification. Dan will send some
suggestions to the list.

Andy pointed out that the Entity State MIB doesn't include
the new CPU enumeration. Will open a problem report in RT.

Dave Perkins isn't convinced that the usage object is
useful -- the values can all be derived from other objects.

Discussion of how 'loadsharing' value of StandbyStatus TC
would be applied to some physical entities. Andy pointed
out that this isn't enough information to do something
really useful.

QUESTION: Should we add the 'load-balancing' value to the
StandbyStatus TC. Marjority not to add, but not definitive.
To be discussed on the list.

Sharon will clarify description regarding the meanings of
the notifications.

Andy asked about hysteresis mechanism to avoid a lot of
notifications when state is flapping. Sharon argued that
it shouldn't happen, and Andy agreed that it is okay as is.

Some clarifications needed on the topic of corrective
action.

Sharon will look at related MIBs and consider changes.

Dave Perkins would like to see a prototype implementation
before this goes to PS. Andy asked "why?", and Dave
indicated that this is too important to change later.

Andy thinks that there is a lot of lee-way for applications
developers, particularly entStateOper. What does it mean
at the chassis or system level? Andy will send suggestions.

ACTION ITEMS
============

Margaret Last Call the Entity MIB for DS after IETF.
Margaret Post Entity MIB implementation report on the web.
Dan Send suggested wording for 'busy' and 'active'
                 usage states.
Andy Open a problem report in RT indicating that the
CPU enumeration is missing in the Entity State
                 MIB.
All Comment on Entity State MIB last call.
Sharon/Dave Update Entity State MIB after last call completes
and circulate changes to the list for review.
Andy Send suggestions for entStateOper for chassis.

Entity MIB Minutes
Tuesday, July 15, 2003
IETF 57 -- Vienna, Austria
==========================

============

Hi,
I would like to include following things in the Operational State of the
entities.
Atleast I would like entity mib working group to check whether these
things can be
added along with the existing ones

Operational State/Usage:
Boot : Device is in the process of booting or initialization
failed : Entity is in failed state (so that it can not be used)
mismatch : Entity mismatch with the expected entity
missing : entity expected but currently not available.

Thanks
Subra

Hi Dave, Sharon
Convention followed in many RFC MIBs is : The enumeration name used
in the DESCRIPTION should be specified in quotes
'disabled' 'unsupported' etc. In my opinion, it will increase the
readability.

Is it possible you make these editorial changes?

Entity MIB Minutes
Tuesday, July 15, 2003
IETF 57 -- Vienna, Austria
==========================

============

There may be a problem in advancing this document to Draft Standard
since it contains a new TC -- PhysicalIndexOrZero -- which has not
been used in any object definition. I suppose that this is open
to interpretation, but in the AToM MIB WG we assumed for the purposes
of advancing RFC 2493 (which contains only TCs) that we'd have to
provide evidence that each TC had been used in defining at least
one object that was implemented by two vendors. For details see:
http://www.ietf.org/IESG/Implementations/RFC2493-Implementation.txt

In the case of PhysicalIndexOrZero the problem of not being used in
any object definitions (if it is a problem) can be easily overcome
by changing

entPhysicalContainedIn OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX Integer32 (0..2147483647)
    MAX-ACCESS read-only
    STATUS current
    DESCRIPTION
"The value of entPhysicalIndex for the physical entity which
'contains' this physical entity. A value of zero indicates
this physical entity is not contained in any other physical
entity. Note that the set of 'containment' relationships
define a strict hierarchy; that is, recursion is not
            allowed.

In the event a physical entity is contained by more than one
physical entity (e.g., double-wide modules), this object
should identify the containing entity with the lowest value
            of entPhysicalIndex."
    ::= { entPhysicalEntry 4 }

as suggested some time ago by Juergen Schoenwaelder. In my opinion
this is a very good idea on its own merits, irrespective of the process
question I have raised, and I strongly urge the WG to consider making
this change before submitting the document to the IESG. (Indeed,
PhysicalIndexOrZero seems to be made exactly for objects such as
entPhysicalContainedIn, and in a MIB doctor review I would ask why
it was not used.)

If the WG agrees to make this change, then the following additional
changes (or something like them) would also be needed:

OLD:
EntPhysicalEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
      ...
      entPhysicalContainedIn Integer32,
      ...
}

NEW:
EntPhysicalEntry ::= SEQUENCE {
      ...
      entPhysicalContainedIn PhysicalIndexOrZero,
      ...
}

OLD:
4.15.3. Bugfixes

The syntax was changed from INTEGER to Integer32 for the
entPhysicalContainedIn, entPhysicalParentRelPos, entLogicalIndex, and
entAliasLogicalIndexOrZero objects.

NEW:
4.15.3. Bugfixes

The syntax was changed from INTEGER to Integer32 for the
entPhysicalParentRelPos, entLogicalIndex, and
entAliasLogicalIndexOrZero objects, and from INTEGER to
PhysicalIndexOrZero for the entPhysicalContainedIn object.

There may be a problem in advancing this document to Draft Standard
since it contains a new TC -- PhysicalIndexOrZero -- which has not
been used in any object definition. I suppose that this is open
to interpretation, but in the AToM MIB WG we assumed for the purposes
of advancing RFC 2493 (which contains only TCs) that we'd have to
provide evidence that each TC had been used in defining at least
one object that was implemented by two vendors. For details see:
http://www.ietf.org/IESG/Implementations/RFC2493-Implementation.txt

In the case of PhysicalIndexOrZero the problem of not being used in
any object definitions (if it is a problem) can be easily overcome
by changing

entPhysicalContainedIn OBJECT-TYPE
    SYNTAX Integer32 (0..2147483647)
    MAX-ACCESS read-only
    STATUS current
    DESCRIPTION
"The value of entPhysicalIndex for the physical entity which
'contains' this physical entity. A value of zero indicates
this physical entity is not contained in any other physical
entity. Note that the set of 'containment' relationships
define a strict hierarchy; that is, recursion is not
            allowed.

In the event a physical entity is contained by more than one
physical entity (e.g., double-wide modules), this object
should identify the containing entity with the lowest value
            of entPhysicalIndex."
    ::= { entPhysicalEntry 4 }
