A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Email mailstore and eXtensions To Revise or Amend WG of the IETF.

Title : INTERNET MESSAGE ACCESS PROTOCOL - VERSION 4rev2
        Authors : Alexey Melnikov
                          Barry Leiba
	Filename : draft-ietf-extra-imap4rev2-11.txt
	Pages : 158
	Date : 2019-12-03

Abstract:
The Internet Message Access Protocol, Version 4rev2 (IMAP4rev2)
allows a client to access and manipulate electronic mail messages on
a server. IMAP4rev2 permits manipulation of mailboxes (remote
message folders) in a way that is functionally equivalent to local
folders. IMAP4rev2 also provides the capability for an offline
client to resynchronize with the server.

IMAP4rev2 includes operations for creating, deleting, and renaming
mailboxes, checking for new messages, permanently removing messages,
setting and clearing flags, RFC 5322, RFC 2045 and RFC 2231 parsing,
searching, and selective fetching of message attributes, texts, and
portions thereof. Messages in IMAP4rev2 are accessed by the use of
numbers. These numbers are either message sequence numbers or unique
   identifiers.

IMAP4rev2 does not specify a means of posting mail; this function is
handled by a mail submission protocol such as RFC 6409.

RFC 5322 doesn't have "route-addr". It has "obs-route". Should we in =
general make it a bit more obvious that the route is completely obsolete =
and neither server nor clients need to support this field? I was =
thinking of getting rid of it in Dovecot and just making it always NIL.

Sorry for the delay on this.

Per discussion in Singapore, the PREVIEW draft has been altered to replace "named algorithms" with media types. The "FUZZY" algorithm was therefore renamed to "text/imap-fetch-preview" so that the semantics could be identified using the new media type method.

As part of this, it was necessary to clarify that the default algorithm, if either no algorithm list was provided or no algorithm was associated with a LAZY modifier, MUST be text/imap-fetch-preview. Now that there is not a way for a client to determine which algorithms a server supports ("PREVIEW=" capability detection was removed), this seems to be the only rational choice - allowing every server to potentially specify a different default algorithm would lead to an inconsistent IMAP experience across installations.

I think this covers everything that was discussed at the last meeting.

Huh? This is not at all what I thought we agreed on. The point of the discussion in Singapore was to remove any request for an algorithm. Instead you just request which media type(s) you are happy to get previews in, and if the server is able to generate a preview in that media type you'll get it. So the majority of standard email clients would just request "text/plain".

We definitely talked about this. We got rid of the server advertising algorithms - we did not get rid of the need for a specific text preview semantic that matched the existing FUZZY functionality. I wouldn't have agreed to a switch to media types without this.

Is that semantic not just "do whatever you want to provide a reasonable preview in text/plain format"?

This is a move in the right direction, but we are not quite there yet. I
have a few questions that might affect my specific suggestions:

1) The document says to use media type syntax, but not necessarily media
types. If you want the former, you probably need a new registry (I
recommend against that). If you want the latter, then why not just use
text/plain, as a registered media type?

2) If there is a good reason not to use "text/plain", you need to
registered "text/imap-fetch-preview" with IANA.

3) For unsupported media types, it would be good to define a new IMAP
response code, similar to BADCHARSET.

Alexey

Good catch!

I think the answer to this is whether or not you want to preserve
fidelity of very old messages. I agree there is no reason to generate
source route, but I am not sure that IMAP4rev2 is the right place to
deprecate its use.

I assume that "use" means "display" in this paragraph? Timo isn't
suggesting to forbid anyone from sending source routes, he's effectively
suggesting that IMAP4rev2 suppress their display.

Does anyone on the list have a largish collection of clients and a
convenient way to test? I suspect that a majority of recent clients already
do suppress the source routes. If that is correct, then suppressing them in
the protocol has advantages and no real cost.

This is the big one! This email starts the working group last call for:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-extra-imap4rev2/

Due to the holiday season as well as the size of this document, I'm giving an extended last call period of 4 weeks, making this last call expire on January 17, 2020.

Hopefully you've all been following along the multiple discussions and decisions we've made in the working group over the past few years, but we'd definitely all appreciate a thorough read of the document because it's a big spec with lots to cover!

Have a great next couple of weeks, whatever you celebrate during this time, and I'll see you in the new year.

Cheers,

Bron.

In the interest of full disclosure: the change to disallow multiple=20
extended LIST patterns as requested by Chris Newman is still pending,=20
but it shouldn't have big impact on the document.

I second that!
