Folks,

This is the WG Last call notice for draft-ietf-fax-tiff-fx-regbis-04.txt.

According to the SLC meeting results,

>Mid January 2002:
>
>- issue the WG last call for image/tiff registration as BCP

I should have done earlier. Sorry for my slow action.

Anyway,
The WG Last Call period is 2 weeks. It closes on February 28.
If you have "last comments", please send them to our ML by that time.

Dear Ned,
Dear Patrik,
Dear IETF secretary,

I am Hiroshi Tamura, a co-chair of IETF FAX WG.
Thanks for your usual support for our WG.

The Internet Fax Working Group requests IESG approval for publication of
the following two I-Ds, with the specified status.

.....................................................................
1

Tag Image File Format Fax eXtended (TIFF-FX) - image/tiff-fx
MIME Sub-type Registration
<draft-ietf-fax-tiff-fx-reg-01.txt>

Status: Proposed Standard

Summary:

This document describes the registration of the MIME sub-type
image/tiff-fx. The encodings are defined by File Format for Internet
   Fax [TIFF-FX] and its extensions.

Working Group Last Call Result:

The I-D was submitted for IETF-FAX WG Last Call on January 25.
During WG LC period, there were no comments.
It sucessfully finished on February 8.

.....................................................................
2

SMTP Service Extension for Content Negotiation of Internet Fax
<draft-ietf-fax-esmtp-conneg-01.txt>

Status: Proposed Standard

Summary:

This document defines a content negotiation SMTP
service extension [ESMTP1, ESMTP2] whereby an SMTP
client may request information about content
capabilities of the target device or system that is
serviced by an SMTP server. The SMTP server may report
the target's content capabilities back to the client.
This process emulates a classic facsimile start-of-
     session capabilities negotiation. This service
extension is primarily intended for "direct" SMTP
transfers, although relayed scenarios are permitted.

Working Group Last Call Result:

The I-D was submitted for IETF-FAX WG Last Call on January 25.
During WG LC period, there were no comments.
It sucessfully finished on February 8.

Hallo,

here is the updated version of DRAFT-ALLOCCHIO-GSTN-02.TXT, which
includes, as the only difference from the previous one, an "implementer's
note" regarding 'pause' and 'tonewait' which was suggested as helpful.

As mentioned in the first release of the draft, "the intention for this
document is to provide a unique syntax for Dial Sequences, including
expecially phone numbers as a subset. The definitions contained in the
draft actually come from existing Draft Standard and Proposed Standard
specifications, but were collected here to provide a quick, easy and
unique reference document for anybody needing this particualr encoding.
The original idea comes from the Application Area Directors, and I made
the collection and edited the I-D."

I kindly invite you to provide me your comments and suggestions!

Thank you all, and regards!

Hallo,

yes sir!

I think you missed the main point here. RFC2806, RFC3191, RFC3192, and a
large number of rfc-to-be from the VPIM WG in the RFC Editor queue now all
use the syntax and specification contained into
DRAFT-ALLOCCHIO-GSTN-02.TXT and thus are all compatible with it. Thus this
document does not add or updated any of them at all (all authors of the
above documents are those who contributed to this I-D).

However the specifications are embedded into RFCs whose title and
purpouse is not to sepcify how you write in text a dial string sequence,
and this creates continuously the "re-invent the wheel" problem, and the
ADs and IESG has to send back specifications asking the authors to use
the existing standard specification. If there is a single "collection"
document with a sensible title, and which is free from other definitions
which might confuse the reader, the "keeping the coherence" job is easier.

Local Phone string can work only "locally", and global-phone ones do
their job globally. If you think the text is not clear enough, we can try
to clarify it.

> Hey, I'm sure you don't have anything else to do before 2300 MET, right? :).

... I'm just waiting the kernel to rebuild after I included IPv6 on my
workstation... thus I have some time...

:-)

Regards
Claudio

Folks,

I attended ITU-T SG16 meeting at the middle of February.
Our WG submitted a communication to ITU-T. Although ITU-T
do not send a communication to us at this meeting,
we have good news. T.37 distribution was re-started.

The following is the report of T.37 issue.

TD06 Communication from IETF FAX Working Group - The group reviewed
the contribution and made special note of the content. Comments from
the group indicated that Adobe had indeed sent a communication to
the ITU-T TSB Director in September 1997 which indicated the support
for Referencing TIFF specifications in ITU Standards. This document
was provided to the SG8 meeting of 7-16 October 1997 as TD2097.
After discussion, the group agreed that the concerns were not of
technical nature and it was agreed that this item of work should be
reviewed by the SG16 management. Subsequent comments from members
strongly requested the TSB resume publication and sale of T.37.
This matter was further discussed in a meeting with the TSB Director
of ITU-T and with relevent SG16 members. It was agreed that the
currently approved T.37 and its Amendments would immediately be made
available for sale and distribution by the ITU-T.

In fact, I showed the above TD2097 at the meeting.
Fortunately, Mr. Rafferty was there. He and I discussed with TSB Director,
Q14 rapporteur and WP chairman. Thanks, Mr. Rafferty.

You can download T.37 from the URL below.
  http://www.itu.int/rec/recommendation.asp?type=folders&lang=e&parent=T-REC-T.37
But, it is on sale :-<

You may be aware that the ENUM WG is shortly going to be revising its core
protocol RFC2916 and one of the core issues is how the NAPTR service fields
shall be defined by applications.

Part of this process will be a specific IANA registration for the service
field.

I'm wondering if there is any interest in the Internet Fax WG defining how
its applications could use ENUM etc.

The ENUM WG will be meeting in MN ..if there is any interest I could stop
by the FAX WG to answer questions etc.

We have the Addressing I-D by Claudio now. So, I think it is meaningful.

Claudio,
is it OK for you?

Richard,
10 minutes presentation including Q&A is enough for you?

Yes!

The "phone number syntax" (actually it is not addressing) I-D just gives
the way to write down E.164 numbers in a text string, but ENUM
capabilities an be used by I-fax... just a few ones: is there an I-fax
gateway associated to that E.164 number? ...

True but then you get into the famous ENUM vs TRIP issues :-)

...but of particular interest to some of us in the ENUM WG is the issue
of how granular must the NAPTR service field be for any particular application.

Internet Fax represents a interesting case since it is based on SMTP the
question what hinds of hints might be required to identify the capabilities
of the endpoint come to the forefront. It back to the old issues of how do
you discover the capabilities of a IFax client that haunted the Simple
mode. Well that was the basis for most of the RESCAP work but at least in
ENUM you can query in advance of sending the document and discover not only
the URL for the endpoint but perhaps pointers to its capabilities.

Is there requirements for things like [ IFAX-S+E2U ] for the simple mode
? [ IFAX-FX+E2U] for advanced? I don't know. This is why a discussion
ENUM applicability to fax could be very interesting.

I'll plan on a simple review of where the ENUM WG is going..

Folks,

These drafts discuss some general unified messaging (UM) client issues that
I think would be worth discussing at both the FAX and VPIM WGs.

After some discussion, I suggest we need to decide between the following:
a) create a new BOF/WG to work on UM
b) recharter VPIM and/or FAX to work on this
c) close and combine VPIM and FAX into a new UM WG to work on this and
remaining VPIM/FAX topics

Cheers,
Glenn Parsons
VPIM WG Chair

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.

Title : Messaging profile for telephone-based Messaging
                          clients
	Author(s)	: G. Vaudreuil
	Filename	: draft-vaudreuil-um-issues-00.txt
	Pages : 12
	Date : 21-Feb-02

This document discussed issues and requirements for a profile of the
IMAP 4, message submission, and notification protocols for use by
telephone user interfaces delivering the traditional voice mail user
experience. Experience with IMAP 4 and voice mail systems has shown
quite a few limitations that may be addressed by protocol extensions and
standardized conventions between clients and servers.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-vaudreuil-um-issues-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-vaudreuil-um-issues-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.

Title : Internet Unified Messaging Requirements
	Author(s)	: E. Burger
	Filename	: draft-burger-um-reqts-00.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 21-Feb-02

Internet Unified Messaging brings together the body of work done in
VPIM, FPIM, IMAPEXT, and other IETF work groups. The goal is to
provide a single infrastructure, mailbox, and set of interfaces for
a user to get, respond to, and manipulate all of their messages, no
matter what the media or source. This document describes the
requirements for providing such a service.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-burger-um-reqts-00.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-burger-um-reqts-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-burger-um-reqts-00.txt".

Yes.

One idea, I think.

Anyway, the time for this topic is necessary at FAX WG meeting.
I think we can arrange 10-20 minutes.

ID-ACTIONs on UMI have long thought (c) would be best. I think the
application area directors would also prefer (c), as it reduces the number
of working groups.

  Folks,

These drafts discuss some general unified messaging (UM) client issues
that I think would be worth discussing at both the FAX and VPIM WGs.

  VPIM WG Chair

a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.
