A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Frame Relay Service MIB Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Definitions of Managed Objects for Circuit to
                          Interface Translation
	Author(s)	: R. Steinberger, O. Nicklass
	Filename	: draft-ietf-frnetmib-frsi-03.txt
	Pages : 27
	Date : 25-Jun-01

This memo defines an extension of the Management Information Base
(MIB) for use with network management protocols in TCP/IP-based
internets. In particular, it defines objects for managing the
insertion of interesting Circuit Interfaces into the ifTable. This is
important for circuits that must be used within other MIB modules
which require an ifEntry. It allows for integrated monitoring of
circuits as well as routing to circuits using unaltered, pre-existing
MIB modules.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-frnetmib-frsi-03.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-frnetmib-frsi-03.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-frnetmib-frsi-03.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Hello,

I've been hearing that there is renewed interest
in frame relay - both in terms of equipment vendors
wanting to provide this in their offerings and
service providers rolling out new services. Is
this true?

If true, what drives this renewed interest? My
earlier understanding was that frame relay seemed
to be moving towards an end as a technology in use
with more and more users preferring services such
as DSL, ATM, Ethernet-to-the-metro, etc.

Any insight will be helpful to understand.

Thanks
Chel

Chel,

Simply put, Frame Relay services remain very attractively priced when
compared to other alternatives, and the market seems to be continuing to
grow even in these difficult times. Most FR networks are star-topology
VPNs, and most remote tail circuits are still on the lower end of the BW
scale: NxDS0 and DS1, although the central sites are moving to DS3 or even
faster in some cases. Many services providers also now offer FR/ATM
interworking, where the remote sites use FR and the central servers use
higher-speed ATM.

AT&T is now also offering a separate "IP-Enabled FR" service, which is
really IP router interconnection over an MPLS router network using RFC 2547
VPNs; the tail circuits to the customers use IP over FR (RFC 2427),
terminate the FR in the first router, extract the IP packets, and route
them within the VPN. The advantage to the customer is that they only need
a single DLCI to the service provider for any-to-any connectivity in the
VPN; the disadvantage is that it only supports IP, rather than all FR-based
applications. AT&T still has its traditional FR service as well.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Andy

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Frame Relay Service MIB Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Definitions of Managed Objects for Circuit to
                          Interface Translation
	Author(s)	: R. Steinberger, O. Nicklass
	Filename	: draft-ietf-frnetmib-frsi-04.txt
	Pages : 26
	Date : 26-Sep-01

This memo defines an extension of the Management Information Base
(MIB) for use with network management protocols in TCP/IP-based
internets. In particular, it defines objects for managing the
insertion of interesting Circuit Interfaces into the ifTable. This is
important for circuits that must be used within other MIB modules
which require an ifEntry. It allows for integrated monitoring of
circuits as well as routing to circuits using unaltered, pre-existing
MIB modules.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Frame Relay Service MIB Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Definitions of Managed Objects for Frame Relay Service
                          Level Definitions
	Author(s)	: R. Steinberger, O. Nicklass
	Filename	: draft-ietf-frnetmib-frmrelay-service-06.txt
	Pages : 66
	Date : 26-Sep-01

This memo defines an extension of the Management Information Base
(MIB) for use with network management protocols in TCP/IP-based
internets. In particular, it defines objects for managing the Frame
Relay Service Level Definitions

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-frnetmib-frmrelay-service-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-frnetmib-frmrelay-service-06.txt".
