I changed this to:

The main rationale for ignoring the IPv4 address in the 227 response is =
that, even if the client has IPv4 connectivity, most servers will only =
allow a data connection from the same client address as seen in the =
control channel connection. See <xref target=3D"Bernstein" />.

Hi,

I updated the BEHAVE FTP64 draft:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-behave-ftp64-04.txt

It went through wglc. We've had a request to delay IETF last call until =
after the FTPEXT2 BoF. I would be much obliged if a few more people =
could review it, and those who already did so can check if the latest =
version addresses their comments and doesn't introduce any new issues, a =
diff should soon be available here:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-behave-ftp64-04

If anyone wants to talk in person in Maastricht, let me know and I can =
see if we can arrange that.=

Should be fine to allow provided algorithms provided that there is a
prefix to distinguish between registered and private algorithms, X_ perha=
ps.

Also, it needs to be made clear that the private algorithms are not
interoperable, as two servers might implement two completely different
algorithms using the same private name.

Agreed.

What about "A server MAY cache the calculated hashes [...] provided it
updates or invalidates the cached hash when content of the corresponding

Sounds good.

Yes, that paragraph needs to be improved.

I'd like to have draft-bryan-ftp-hash on the agenda. we plan to have
an updated version in time for the BOF. when is the cutoff date, a few
days before the meeting?

Daniel Stenberg plans to physically be at the BOF I believe.
I will be attending remotely. can you offer instructions on doing that
closer to the date?

thanks,

OK, setting up an agenda for the WG meeting in Maastricht... We're
scheduled to meet for 2 hours, on Monday afternoon (26 July) from
17:40 to 19:40 CET (15:40 to 17:40 UTC).

I'm including a skeleton agenda, below. I'd like to hear about other
agenda items people have to propose, or any other comments about the
skeleton agenda. I'd also like more of a "show of hands" to let me
know who's going to be attending in person, and who will participate
remotely, using the audio stream or jabber. We've had only one
response to that. Please reply to this thread with answers to these
questions, and other issues directly related to the Maastricht
meeting.

Note that there's time on the agenda to discuss a few specific drafts.
That done, it's not the primary purpose of this session to go into
detail on the drafts, but to look at how we should be coordinating FTP
extension work, and whether we have the critical mass of work and
interest to form a working group. I expect that the draft discussions
will be fairly high level, and relatively brief.

Here's a skeleton agenda, with no times on it yet:
1. Welcome and announcements.
2. Background and purpose of the BoF.
3. General discussion of interest in FTP extensions.
4. Document discussions...
   a. draft-ietf-behave-ftp64[1]
   b. draft-liu-behave-ftp64[2]
   c. draft-bryan-ftp-hash[3]
   d. draft-hethmon-mcmurray-ftp-hosts[4]
   e. draft-peterson-streamlined-ftp-command-extensions[5]
   f. other documents...
5. Questions about working-group formation.
6. Next steps.

I see an updated version is available that removed HOST

I think you also want to add an informative reference to RFC 5797 and
add the commands in the IANA sections similar to the other drafts.

the above things are in the -06 draft.

Remaining known issues concerning this draft:

    * Should HASH support partial file hashes, similar to the
Content-MD5 HTTP Header.
    * Section needs improvement: which files should a server process a
HASH command for a logged in user?
    * What should happen if somebody attempts to HASH something that
isn't a file (e.g. it's a directory)?

A more efficient and less DoS-prone way to implement this would be for =
the client to tell the server the hash, and for the server to tell the =
client whether the file matches the hash.

To optimize this, the hash wouldn't be a straigh hash over the entire =
file, but consist of three parts: the file length, a hash over a small =
part of the file (say, the first and last kilobyte) and finally a hash =
over the entire file. So if the length doesn't match, the file doesn't =
match the hash and there is no need to access the file. If the hash over =
the small part doesn't match, there is no match and hashing the entire =
file is avoided.

Nitpick: repeating the first part of the abstract in the introduction =
verbatim is a bit annoying.=

Not sure how this reduces DoS - if a client can STOR/RETR a file then they
know the length and 'mini-hash' and thence force the server to repeatedly
calculate the full hash. (And if the server is caching the hash, then
this isn't a DoS issue in the first place).

my 2c - this is an unnecessary complication to address a possible threat
that can be managed by other mechanisms (throttling HASH requests from a
given client, caching the hash, ...)

Iljitsch, interesting approach.

I believe one of the draft's earlier incarnations also had a CHKHSH
command which did just this.

unless I'm misunderstanding, this would be MORE indirect, unoptimized,
complex and DoSy than the current draft.

to be able to answer whether a hash is correct, the server still needs
to know the correct hash?
when you meet someone, do you ask "is your name Bob? no, how about
Jim? no, Ed?" or do you just come right out and ask "what's your
name?" which is simpler?

MirrorBrain is an example of a server, although HTTP not FTP, that is
a hash/mirror cache/provider: http://www.mirrorbrain.org/
it also might be worth examining what the other FTP servers that
implement the nonstandard hash commands do.

you mention partial file hashes, some of those nonstandard commands
like XCRC and XMD5 support it with a byte range.
do you think HASH should support partial file hashing?

> Nitpick: repeating the first part of the abstract in the introduction ver=
batim is a bit annoying.

sure, we'll work on that.

No, because that way the client could ask the server to do an almost =

I don't get it...either way, the server and client both have to
perform the expensive operation, right?

the server caches hashes or can limit the use of HASH, as Paul mentioned...

I haven't heard of this as a problem for Instance Digests (8 years
old), Content-MD5 (15 years), or the current 10 nonstandard FTP
hash/checksum commands (9 years), even though I've brought it up
before.

right, there are reasons against partial file hashes/Content-MD5. does
everyone think they are insurmountable?
I'm personally against it as it involves more work! :)

A malicious client could ask the server for hashes for all files it has. =
In my scheme, the amount of work done by the server is limited to =
computing the short hash, unless the malicious client has the full file =
or its full hash, in which case the client can get the server to compute =
hashes over the entire files.

In the non-malicious case you still get to save work some of the time.

BTW, try this for fun: type md5 <gigabyte+ file> and try to use your =
computer as normal: load a big web page, start an application.

As commercials for financial services keep telling us: past performance =
doesn't guarantee future performance.=

In response to the following question that Anthony had posted:

>> What should happen if somebody attempts to HASH
>> something that isn't a file (e.g. it's a directory)?

I have a suggestion - why not return a list of filenames with their associa=
ted hashes for the directory using the algorithm that was specified by an e=
arlier OPTS command? For example:

C> HASH /foo/
S> 125 Data connection already open; transfer starting.
S> MD5 F0E1D2C3B4A5968778695A4B3C2D1E0F file1.txt
S> MD5 78695A4B3C2D1E0FF0E1D2C3B4A59687 file2.txt
S> MD5 0F1E2D3C4B5A69788796A5B4C3D2E1F0 file3.txt
S> 226 Transfer complete.

This has obvious benefits when considering an FTP client that is trying to =
synchronize a list of files between locations, and it's much more reliable =
than file sizes and date/time stamps. In addition, allowing for the HASH co=
mmand to be requested for a directory would be much better than trying to i=
mplement hashes in the response to a LIST request.

Are you proposing to use a data connection just like with RETR/STOR and
the likes? If so, how to distinguish between getting the hash for a
single file (as sent over the control connection) and getting the hashes
for an entire directory?

Either all data needs to be sent over the transfer connection or the
transfer connection must never be used for HASH, otherwise the client
would not know when to send PORT/PASV... in preparation.

In case everything goes over the transfer connection, I see a problem
with directories containing only a single file with a name identical to
that of the directory:
> S> MD5 F0E1D2C3B4A5968778695A4B3C2D1E0F file1.txt

Is it a file named file1.txt in the current directory or a file named
file1.txt in the file1.txt directory? This this getting even more
complicated considering that the FTP specs do not mandate a particular
path syntax.

The other possible solution would be to use a multi-line response.

Last but not least, what should happen if the client issues HASH on a
directory containing over a million files?

Tim

This is why I asked the question in the first place, I think this
discussion needs to happen and the group needs to agree on a decision.

Why not? - because it is complicated and, arguably unnecessary (MLST and
repeated HASH can achieve the same result, agreed with different network
overhead)

> Yes - I am proposing to use the data channel.

Which is a major change from the existing proposal where the response is
sent on the control connection.

Whatever we decide, we must agree that 'HASH filename' and 'HASH dirname'
must operate in the same manner with respect to whether the reply comes
back on control or data. To have different mechanisms depending on what
the type of thing you are HASHing is (which a client doesn't necessarily
know) is clearly wrong.

> I am suggesting the same behavior that you would expect with a LIST
command:

Which is certainly possible. Perhaps one way forward is to create another
I-D defining a new HLST command which specifies just this.

Personally, I don't like this idea - it's creating yet another pattern for
the FTP protocol to use.

> > Last but not least, what should happen if the client issues

And this is where I see the real issue. We are already having a
discussion about server resource and the potential of DoS attacks by the
use of the HASH command. To compound this by allowing a single command to
HASH 'millions' of files is surely even more contentious. If we do think
it's necessary, and we also agree that the 'The server MAY refuse to
calculate a HASH for any reason including "I am too busy right now"' -
then how to convey this on a file-by-file basis as part of a directory
HASH command is a non-trivial issue.

I propose that this draft specifically excludes HASH over a directory
(i.e. returns a 4xy error) and, if there is felt to be a need for a
multi-file HASH command, create a new draft defining an HLST command that
does just that. The main reason is to keep the focus on the work done so
far with HASH and not open a whole new can of worms at this stage.

I believe that to try to create a single draft with both approaches is
asking for IETF trouble.

Paul

<br><tt><font size=2>&gt; I am suggesting the same behavior that you would
expect with a LIST command:</font></tt>
<br>
<br><tt><font size=2>Which is certainly possible. &nbsp;Perhaps one way
forward is to create another I-D defining a new HLST command which specifies
just this.</font></tt>
<br><tt><font size=2><br>
&gt; &gt; The other possible solution would be to use a multi-line<br>
&gt; &gt; response.</font></tt>
<br>
<br><tt><font size=2>Personally, I don't like this idea - it's creating
yet another pattern for the FTP protocol to use.</font></tt>
<br><tt><font size=2><br>
&gt; &gt; Last but not least, what should happen if the client issues<br>
&gt; &gt; HASH on a directory containing over a million files?<br>
</font></tt>
<br><tt><font size=2>And this is where I see the real issue. &nbsp; We are
already having a discussion about server resource and the potential of
DoS attacks by the use of the HASH command. &nbsp; To compound this by allowing
a single command to HASH 'millions' of files is surely even more contentious.
&nbsp; If we do think it's necessary, and we also agree that the 'The server
MAY refuse to calculate a HASH for any reason including &quot;I am too
busy right now&quot;' - then how to convey this on a file-by-file basis
as part of a directory HASH command is a non-trivial issue.</font></tt>
<br>
<br><tt><font size=2>I propose that this draft specifically excludes HASH
over a directory (i.e. returns a 4xy error) and, if there is felt to be
a need for a multi-file HASH command, create a new draft defining an HLST
command that does just that. &nbsp; The main reason is to keep the focus
on the work done so far with HASH and not open a whole new can of worms
at this stage. &nbsp;</font></tt>
<br>
<br><tt><font size=2>I believe that to try to create a single draft with
both approaches is asking for IETF trouble.</font></tt>

I've updated the meeting materials site with an agenda that has some
sketchy times on it:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/78/materials.html

I've also added an item requested by Alfred H=F6nes, which he will write
up and post as an I-D after the meeting; see below.

I am not planning to use slides for this meeting, so remote
participants will mostly not have to worry about following slides.
The agenda and our voices will be the order of the day. That said, if
anyone does have slides they want to present, please get them to me by
email <barryleiba@computer.org> by the end of day on Sunday. Because
of the late notice (my apology), I will accept slides on Monday
morning, as well, but (1) I will close submissions hard at 11 a.m.
Monday, European time, and (2) I will really appreciate it if people
can get them to me as early as possible, and not later than Sunday
evening if you can manage that.

Barry, as chair

Revised Specification of the 'ftp' URI Scheme
          =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

                 (to be: draft-ah-ftp-uri-00)

History:  - first specification embedded in RFC 1630;
          - revised in RFC 1738;
          - amended by RFC 1808 (for relative URIs)

Issues:   - above RFCs obsoleted, no current spec;

          - no formal IANA registration (as per RFC 4395);

          - implementation practice unclear wrt differences between
RFC 1630 and RFC 1738: default treatment for directories
            (URI parameter ";type=3Dd" vs. trailing "/" in path);

          - implementation practice unclear wrt RFC-based single-step
directory tree walking; would a ";tvfs" URI parameter
be useful to indicate RFC 3659 TVFS semantics, thereby
            allowing improved navigation ?

Goals: - provide a modern specification based on RFC 3986
with an IANA URI Scheme registration template
            according to RFC 4395;

          - resolve default / URI parameter issues.

Barry, I've never participated remotely before.

looking at http://trac.tools.ietf.org/bof/trac/wiki/WikiStart , it
says this requires WebEX? do we just click the link, or do we need to
sign up for anything?

for others, information on audio streaming & jabber chatroom are here:

We won't be using WebEx, and I don't know why the session was requested that way. We'll just use the audio feed and jabber, and I'll get one or more volunteers to "channel" jabber comments to the microphone.

"Too busy right now" is just one of many possible reasons. Others
include permission denied, filesystem error, harddisk failure and so on.
All these would have to be communicated on a file-by-file basis.

There is another huge problem that would definitely arise if we were
using the data connection to return results: Firewalls and
(consumer-grade) NAT routers. I had lots of problems with those when I
switched FileZilla to use MLSD to obtain directory listings. These
products fail to understand the semantics of new commands (as expected)
but do not filter the FEAT response. So a data connection based hash
command be very problematic.

Yes. Intuitively I would have implemented HASH without directory
support, but I concur that it needs to be explicitly mentioned in the dra=
ft.

Hi,

as briefly mentioned on the ftpext BOF, there is one additional expired
draft I would like to see revived:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-somers-ftp-mfxx-04

It introduces the MFMT, MFCT and MFF commands to set file timestamps and
other facts on the server. This complements the commands to get these
facts introduced in RFC 3659.

The MFMT command to set the remote file modification time is of most
interest in my opinion. It's very useful for stateless synchronisation
if the client can modify the remote file timestamp after uploading a
file. Also useful for archiving purposes, so that files can be submitted
to an FTP server and retain their local timestamp.

It would also solve the issue with many non-confirming servers misusing
MDTM to both get _and_ set file modification times. Biggest problem with
that is that a command like "MDTM 20100726182655 foo.txt" is ambiguous.
RFC 3659 explicitly rules using MDTM like that, but does not offer any
other way to set file timestamps.

MFMT is already supported by several well known servers and being used
by clients. While I do not know why the draft was not carried forward,
but I think it would be a loss not having MFMT.

Hi all,

For a little over two years I've been doing quite a bit of work
piecing together the odds and sods of what was the wu-ftpd daemon and its
associated effort, the wu-ftpd development group. In my journey (which
has been limited by the amount of free time admittedly) I've discovered
new RFCs and IDs that came and went, along with patches from the various
linux distros and *BSDs.

To date I've been slowly working on updating the daemon, although
much work seems to have gone on very quietly until the last CVS snapshot
some four years ago ceased being available and the main website went into
limbo.

Not sure who stated that FTP is headed to perhaps becoming a niche
or even boutique protocol, but this reminded me of the herculean efforts
by a team at the GLOBUS alliance (University of Chicago sponsored if I
remember right) to extend the then last public release of the wu-ftpd
codebase to raise FTP to a new level (they called it GridFTP). They did
produce a document outling the changes and resulting FTP extensions which
I have archived here:

http://www.wfms.org/wu-ftpd/docs/drafts/GFD-R.020.pdf
http://www.wfms.org/wu-ftpd/docs/drafts/GFD.21.pdf

Last I chatted with them (1+ year(s) ago) they were interested in
submitting this formally to the IETF if there was a formal process to
submit through. I'm not sure how willing they are today to submit it or
even defend/propel it forward, but that's what spurred me on to keep tabs
on any future ftpext work. So it's nice to see there's at least a wee bit
of interest again.

Anyways, looking forward to seeing how this will play out.

wfms

the draft says this already:

"The pathname argument MUST represent a file path, not a directory path."

what should we add?

further, Tim adds that this would be a permanent negative completion
(5yz) instead of transient negative completion (4yz) and suggests 553.

thanks, Barry. this was my first IETF BOF & it went well, at least
from the audio feed/jabber.

a final decision was not made on whether to form a Working Group.

a number of people raised their hands that they would review drafts.
this mailing list now has 23 subscribers. I've tried to contact as
many people individually, including all the expired draft authors,
along with mailing lists and application authors.

I'm wondering what the pros/cons are of WG creation? is there much
overhead for a total failure of a WG (besides those involved, which
would also be involved independently)?

the other route is independent submissions, of which there are at
least 5 (not counting the 2 from behave) at the moment. which seems to
be more work for an AD.

a WG raises the profile of what we are doing, and possibly more people
will join in. as mentioned in the BOF, we can do all work over the
mailing lists, not require face to face meetings, and work around busy
people's schedules so they can collaborate when convenient.

one nice thing, most of the active drafts are relatively conservative
in their ideas. there's nothing too wacky going on. hash, hosts,
deflate, ftp-uri, some of these commands have been around a decade or
longer and we are just standardizing their use. I think this is very
worthwhile for interoperability on its own.

again, I'm volunteering for any cat herding or admin work I can do to
keep this rolling.

I'm in sporadic contact with a few in my corner, I've sent out email to
see if there's any interest.

I suppose that depends. Do the ADs feel they have time to look at
independent IDs, or is the group forming from the BOF have sufficient
credible drive to give confidence in the ADs to delegate the work to a new
WG? Someone said critical mass, so I think that's the next step to
achieve. That can be demonstrated through the ftpext mailing list
discussions.

Oops, must have missed that (even though I was looking for it). Maybe
resurrect the <blink> tag :-)

In my defence I would expect to see this restriction on the server
behaviour and not on the content of a client created value (the client may
have no idea that /x/y/z is a directory and not a file). i.e. I would
expect to see it in section 3.4 (where I don't spot 553)

> further, Tim adds that this would be a permanent negative completion

The reason I put a 4xy was that path /x/y/z might be a directory one day
and a file the next. Revisiting the discussion on RFC959, I agree that it
should be 5xy. (55y to be more precise)

Cheers,
Paul

Hi,

There was clear consensus (it wasn't even rough) yesterday that the =
current FTP64 document should be split up in an ALG spec and something =
else that specifies how clients and servers should behave to avoid the =
need for such an ALG in the presence of IPv6 to IPv4 translation.

The question is what would be the best way to approach this. On the one =
hand it's attractive to just update the standard. We can then obsolete =
PASV and PORT and mandate the use of EPSV and EPRT instead. I'm not sure =
that would accomplish much in practice, though, as many clients till =
issue PASV (or PORT) so servers will want to keep supporting that. And =
there's the issue of the boxes that work when there is a 227 response =
but not when there is a 229 response. I also worry that an overhaul of =
RFC 959 and rolling in stuff from later FTP RFCs would take quite a long =
time because all kinds of other stuff would find its way into the =
document, too.

The alternative would be to go for best current practice. This has the =
advantage that we can recommend some things that may or may not adhere =
to the strictest letter of the standard as long as doing them is =
obviously the best thing to do in practice. One of these things would be =
ignoring the address in 227 responses. On the other hand, BCPs carry =
less weight than standards, so people might find it even easier to =
ignore a BCP than a STD.

Thoughts?

The idea is that I will continue with draft-ietf-behave-ftp64 which will =
be reduced to the ALG spec and it looks like Dapeng Liu and myself will =
work together on the other document.

we'll add this in the next draft in 3.4:

"The server-PI SHOULD reply with a 553 reply if the user requests the
HASH of a directory, which is not allowed."

do you think we should have more clarifications elsewhere? I guess
it's implicit, but the draft mentions file, file, and doesn't mention
directory except to say that it's not for that. if it doesn't
communicate that well, maybe we should make it more explicit.

IANAWGCC [*], but in my voyages through the 'heritage' that is the wu-ftpd
experience, one downside is having to wade through a lot of RFCs to 'get'
the protocol. In my mind, there are two approaches to updating RFC959:

a) As you said, update it and allow for creeping featurism;
b) Tightly scope the update to RFC 959 to just being an updated version
of the protocol as it stands today according to RFCs only (not drafts,
not even practices out there on the Internet) and look to fixing it
    later...much later.

There is always the third option and that is to do nothing.

[On the BCP vs STD idea]

Given that this is addressing an issue related to the burgeoning
deployment of IPv6, at the very least it should be a BCP. Ideally a STD
but I admit I don't know what weight that would really carry either.

Hi all,

If this WG gains traction, would RFC errata (such as the ones I
came across for RFC 3659) also be dealt with as part of a charter?

Thanks,

when you say dealt with, do you mean verifying reported errata?

I think that would be the plan, if this WG were chartered.

I believe I saw a few unverified errata when looking at FTP RFCs.

I love the third option! :) when given a choice between effort &
effortless, I always pick "less work" (unless that means more work
lateron).

such an undertaking (ftpbis?) would likely take a number of years, I'd
guess. the httpbis WG is doing something similar. they're updating
HTTP, but also taking into account what's been put into practice. (I'm
including their charter at the end).

keep in mind that we didn't have enough BOF interest to convince the
AD to commit to a FTPEXT2 WG at the time (hoping that will change). I
think our best bet is to continue work on our drafts, documenting what
is in use in the wild or what is REALLY needed. we need to continue to
engage authors & implementers.

but... ftpbis would probably be a rising tide. we now also have RFC
5797, the FTP command & extension registry [1], which should be handy
to implementers. I've also tried to update the Wikipedia pages on FTP
[2] to keep them up to date, but I'm sure I've missed a lot. we can
also write articles or blogs...

that said, I had sketched out such a beast & started work on it
privately, but lost steam on my own.

HTTP is one of the most successful and widely-used protocols on the
Internet today. However, its specification has several editorial
issues. Additionally, after years of implementation and extension,
several ambiguities have become evident, impairing interoperability
and the ability to easily implement and use HTTP.

The working group will refine RFC2616 to:
* Incorporate errata and updates (e.g., references, IANA registries,
ABNF)
* Fix editorial problems which have led to misunderstandings of the
specification
* Clarify conformance requirements
* Remove known ambiguities where they affect interoperability
* Clarify existing methods of extensibility
* Remove or deprecate those features that are not widely implemented
and also unduly affect interoperability
* Where necessary, add implementation advice
* Document the security properties of HTTP and its associated
echanisms (e.g., Basic and Digest authentication, cookies, TLS) for
common applications

In doing so, it should consider:
* Implementer experience
* Demonstrated use of HTTP
* Impact on existing implementations and deployments

The Working Group must not introduce a new version of HTTP and should
not add new functionality to HTTP. The WG is not tasked with producing
new methods, headers, or extension mechanisms, but may introduce new
protocol elements if necessary as part of revising existing
functionality which has proven to be problematic

The Working Group's specification deliverables are:
* A document that is suitable to supersede RFC 2616
* A document cataloguing the security properties of HTTP
