A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the General Switch Management Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Requirements For Adding Optical Support To GSMPv3
	Author(s)	: H. Khosravi et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-gsmp-reqs-06.txt
	Pages : 15
	Date : 2003-6-12

This memo provides requirements for adding of optical switching
support to the General Switch Management (GSMP) protocol. It also
contains clarifications and suggested changes to the GSMP v3
specification.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-gsmp-reqs-06.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-gsmp-reqs-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-gsmp-reqs-06.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

For at least application in optical burst switching, the GSMP
headers are thought to be too large. In some ways this reminds
me of discussion we had in the past over ATM cell size and
GSMP message size. But there are considerations, perhaps,
that make the discussion different in this case and therefore worth
re-opening.

There has been a suggestion of adding header compression.
e.g. if a number of reservations are set up for burst switching, and
the control wants the ability to add branches as required, a short Id
could be used to trigger the add branch.

I am still thinking about:
- whether I believe we should do this
- the best way to do it.

I would like to see some list discussion on the topic:

- should there be header compression or is there another
solution to the need for burst add branch triggering?
- if header compression is needed, is it only needed for add branch
messages?
- recommendations for ways to do it!

a.

I recommend that anyone who is planning to submit a draft by the
deadline, submit a note discussing the changes they are making
in the document this week. Of course if it is a new document (e.g.
a mib or pib on partitioning - anyone? or maybe the tdm spec?)
then an abstract would help. We are scheduling for an hour so we
want to plan.

And as an author who is planing to submit an update before the
deadline (barely) i will go first.

---- changes to draft-ietf-gsmp-v3-base-spec

After some discussions withe the team working on the Optical
draft, it was determined that I had not yet generalized enough
of the messages; i.e. that a lot of message content was still
very packet switch oriented. I am therefore in the process of
doing more generalization. Specifically:

- event flags - a notation that 8 event flags (8-15)
are reserved for technology specific definition

- addition of a technology specific block to msg 64
(switch configuration message)

-msg 65 - the porttype specific data needs generalization.

-msf 67 capability set definition needs generalization

- i am not sure if i will have a chance to do some of the
required changes in the optical reqs spec which has just
been submitted to the iesg.

- there has been an issue concerning the size of the gsmp
message header brought up by the folks working on
optical burst switching - i will send a specific message to the
list on this issue.

-I have had some discussions with Jonathan Sadler on the best
way to designate the port specific adaptations.
We have tentatively decided to add a block to the port configuration
message. Jonathan is, hopefully, going to be putting out a
doc on this issue. I don't know if I will get this in on this pass.

So, for all the folks who spoken to me in the privately, I have two
requests;

- correct me if i left out one of the changes i agreed to make
- please discuss issues on the list so more people can voice
their opinions.

thanks
a.

As promised a specific message on header compression.

So, what do people think?

Should there be a general mechanism inserted similar to the
short headers we removed over 2 years ago? Some new sort
of header compression?

Should there be a new mechanism related solely to reservations.
I.e. a new add-reservation message is created that includes only

[vers, sub, msg type, result, code]
[partition id, transaction id]
[reservation id]
[I, submsg, length] or is this needed - though we may be able to
use a bulk mechanism for other add-resv
uses

anything else? and is this still too big?

And does the reservation message need to changed
to allow for these complete reservations. What, if anything needs
to be added to the reservation message?

Opinions? suggestions?

Please, speak up. As an editor, I am am working on the
update for the upcoming meeting at the moment, and need
guidance.

As a co-chair, I would like to know if there is consensus on making
such a change.

I encourage the Optical draft team to discuss their rationale and needs
on the list in response to this message.

a.

note: since i am functioning as a co-chair and editor, any process
issues that may arise from this dual role will be handled by the other
co-chair

Protection functions are not exclusively found in transport switches. For
example, ITU-T recommendation I.630 defines ATM protection. One could also
consider backup next hops in an IP forwarding table a form of restoration.

In transport architecture there is a difference between protection and
restoration. Generally speaking, protection involves the repair of a link
connection without affecting the endpoint of the circuit. Restoration
involves the repair of a circuit that includes changing the endpoint (like a
dropped telephone call followed by redialing). The draft only addresses
protection.

Protection mechanisms can apply to circuit based switches (TDM, SDH, etc.).
I don't think they are fully applicable to packet based switches (IP, ATM).
For example, in 1+1 protection the source switch sends traffic down both
working and protection paths. I don't know of any packet service that does
this between the same source and destination.

So, I think that protection has some general and some specific technology
application. It doesn't not seem to apply though to packet switching.

I think it makes sence. I would prefer not to change existing messages
for two reasons; existing implementations are using the messages and
secondly, there is no room for additional flags in the headers. I would
suggest to add a message type for the purpose. If the new message type
is believed to be usable for other switch types as well i would propose
putting it into the base spec.

I can't see how to make it smaller if we should keep using the general
headers.

The reservation management message is specified to allow reservation of
resources before the labels (to be coupled to the resources) are known,
e.g. in the case of MPLS downstream on demand label distribution. I
think that message type serves its purpose already and doesn't need to
be modified. I think a new msg type should be added.

Will this change be helpful to the optical design team? I would be
interested in hearing their opinion.

i definitely think any new msg. should be in
the base spec.

so this could be a trigger reservations msg.
it would only work for triggering reservations
that had been made with full label info etc..
(i.e. non 0 value for label)

btw, i go the msg wrong in my previous msg.,
i left out the port session id.

msg: triggered add

[vers, sub, msg type, result, code]
[partition id, transaction id]
[I, submsg, length]
[port session id]
[reservation id]

codes would include one for rejecting the trigger
if the reservation was not complete.

opinions?
is it useful in general?
does it satisfy the burst switch requirements?

btw, on the subject of changing messages.
there will be several changes, perhaps not for
this problem, but with adding support for
protection. i am still trying to figure out the
minimum possible change that will support
the variety of possibilities. email on this
tomorrow - i hope.

the one in the base spec now, is technology specific, so it will
need to be moved to the packet based spec.

2 questions:

-should each technology have a specific capability
set definition. i think so, but am interested in hearing other
opinions.

-can it remain the fixed size?
[capset id, traffic flags]
[tech specific]
[tech specific]

the capset id would be subdivided to allow each technology
its own range.

or should it be variable?
i.e.
[capset id, length]
[flags, tech specific]
   .
   .
[tech specific]

opinions please? i tend toward the fixed option,
but if there is a good reason for a variable length
block, please let me know.

i am especially interested in hearing from the
tech specific design teams.

thanks
a.

can someone perhaps explain the problem as the optical burst switching
people see it? i'm not sure that i understand why gsmp packets in
particular, as opposed to all the other long packets in the world, need to
be made shorter.

This mention of bulk messages reminded me that there
was a requirement:
          2.7.2. Bulk Transactions
in the requirements draft.

I have a question about these.
not about their importance, but about their atomicity.

Currently we have only one error code in a message.

So, do we consider a bulk message a single action?
this would mean that if even one of the transactions failed,
    the entire command would fail.
in order for state to be determinate, this would mean the
switch would be responsible for undoing any transaction
    that had been completed.

Or are we saying that we need for each transaction to be
an atom it is own right and thus each one will need its own
error code.

I tend toward the former, thus placing the burden of being able
to guarantee to undo any changes on the switch. And if the
switch is not equipped to do so, it should reject bulk transactions.

Another questions i have:

- Do we modify existing messages to support
bulk transactions or do we create new messages.
   - and if so what needs to be bulk enabled:
      - add is obvious
      - reservation
- or is the triggered add i wrote about sufficient if
it has the bulk transaction capability, with an
   individual reservation message needed prior
   to each transaction.

I tend toward the third possibility.

Comments on both issues please!

This mention of bulk messages reminded me that there

was a requirement:

         2.7.2. Bulk Transactions

in the requirements draft.

I have a question about these. =20

not about their importance, but about their atomicity.

Currently we have only one error code in a message.

So, do we consider a bulk message a single action?

this would mean that if even one of the transactions failed,

   the entire command would fail.

in order for state to be determinate, this would mean the=20

switch would be responsible for undoing any transaction

   that had been completed.

Or are we saying that we need for each transaction to be

an atom it is own right and thus each one will need its own

error code.

I tend toward the former, thus placing the burden of being able

to guarantee to undo any changes on the switch. And if the=20

switch is not equipped to do so, it should reject bulk transactions.

Another questions i have:

- Do we modify existing messages to support

bulk transactions or do we create new messages.

  - and if so what needs to be bulk enabled:

     - add is obvious

     - reservation

- or is the triggered add i wrote about sufficient if

it has the bulk transaction capability, with an=20

  individual reservation message needed prior

  to each transaction.

I tend toward the third possibility.

It is that time again.

I am proposing doing something slightly different with our hour this
time.

Instead of doing the standard status report on each of the working group
documents, I propose that this be done on line by each of the editors at
least a week before the meeting (i.e. sometime shortly after the
submission
deadline). We can devote a short time at the end of the meeting for any
questions people have on the status - no more then 5 mins for all of
them
together.

What I propose is that we take each of the open issues and devote some
time to discussing them. In order to be included on the agenda, the
issue
must have at least been introduced on the list, must relate to one of
the
wg documents and hopefully should have been discussed somewhat
on the list beforehand.

Each discussion should consist of a short recap of the issue - 1-2
slides max
and then discussion.

So far, I have the following topics on the list:

- Triggered Add msg and burst switch requirements
- Bulk Transactions
- Capability sets
- Restoration generalized

For other issues (and I think there may be - for example how
we handle adaptations) please send a brief explanation
of the problem to the list and let me know you need a slot
on the agenda.

Finally, if anyone intends to submit a draft to the group that
is not currently a wg draft, please send a brief description
to the list with a note on why it is, or should be, relevant to
the charter.

Thanks

a.

At least in the ForCES work, the general consensus is that the =
controller needs to
be able to say whether a bulk message requires atomicity or not. In =
either case,
I think per sub-message error codes are needed. If atomicity is =
required you'd
like to know which submessage caused the transaction to fail. If =
atomicity is not
required, then you need to know which sub-messages succeeded and which =
failed.

So, what do people think?=20

Should there be a general mechanism inserted similar to the short =

agree. i support the move to the packet spec.

speaking for the packet spec team, the fixed format should be fine.
anyone seeing a need for further parameters in the capability sets
should speak up at this point, it would justify adding the variable
length option. otherwise i will just leave it as is stands. i guess the
base spec wouldn't be impacted in either case since it won't define the
capability set record format in the next revision (after the move to the
packet spec).

cheers,

I'm not familiar with the short header work and can't judge its usefulness
for burst switching. Can they be used in a bulk message (multiple adds for
example)?

As promised a specific message on header compression.

So, what do people think?

Should there be a general mechanism inserted similar to the short headers we
removed over 2 years ago? Some new sort of header compression?

Should there be a new mechanism related solely to reservations. I.e. a new
add-reservation message is created that includes only

[vers, sub, msg type, result, code]
[partition id, transaction id]
[reservation id]
[I, submsg, length] or is this needed - though we may be able to
use a bulk mechanism for other add-resv
uses

anything else? and is this still too big?

And does the reservation message need to changed
to allow for these complete reservations. What, if anything needs to be
added to the reservation message?

Opinions? suggestions?

Please, speak up. As an editor, I am am working on the
update for the upcoming meeting at the moment, and need guidance.

As a co-chair, I would like to know if there is consensus on making such a
change.

I encourage the Optical draft team to discuss their rationale and needs on
the list in response to this message.

I support the atomicity requirement since commands in the bulk message
aren't dependent on each other. If there are commands that are dependent on
each other then they should be packaged together in some way. As far as
reporting the results, the single message reply could contain individual
replies for each of the commands. One reason for the bulk message is to
improve performance while still being subject to the serial transaction
model. Here, I don't have any dependencies between multiple commands, but
want to send them all at once without having to wait for the response before
sending the next one.

I don't have an opinion on the 2nd issue of message design.

Subject: [GSMP] Bulk Transactions

Comments on both issues please!

do we really need 32 bits of reservation id?
would 16 bits suffice? since reservation ids
are a global resource as opposed to a port
resource, i am concerned that it might be too
small a value. but the concern for parsimony
dictate that i should at least ask.

the questions comes in the context adding
a (result, code) byte to every transaction
in a bulk msg.

assuming that bulk msgs would only
be supported when there was a prexisitng
complete reservation, that would give a
trigger msd of

[header] x 3
[port session id]
[reservation id, result, code]

and a bulk msg

[header] x 3
[port session id]
[reservation id, result, code]
.
.
.
[port session id]
[reservation id, result, code]

that is, of course assuming that a bulk msg
can support transactions on multiple ports.
we could also define it to support msgs on
on single port per bulk message.

would anyone who has implemented already
object to such a change?

a.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the General Switch Management Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : GSMPv3 Packet Capable Switch Support
	Author(s)	: K. Sundell
	Filename	: draft-ietf-gsmp-packet-spec-01.txt
	Pages : 43
	Date : 2003-6-27

The General Switch Management Protocol version 3 (GSMPv3) has been
divided into a base specification (describing the semantics of the
protocol) together with a set of documents describing protocol
extensions to the base. Such extension could be to support switches
capable for optical transport. This document adds extensions to the
base GSMPv3 specification for controlling MPLS, ATM and Frame Relay
capable switches.

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-gsmp-packet-spec-01.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-gsmp-packet-spec-01.txt".
