A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Host Identity Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Using the Host Identity Protocol with Legacy Applications
	Author(s) : T. Henderson, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-hip-applications-04.txt
	Pages : 22
	Date : 2008-07-07

This document is an informative overview of how legacy applications
can be made to work with the Host Identity Protocol (HIP). HIP
proposes to add a cryptographic name space for network stack names.
>From an application viewpoint, HIP-enabled systems support a new
address family of host identifiers, but it may be a long time until
such HIP-aware applications are widely deployed even if host systems
are upgraded. This informational document discusses implementation
and Application Programming Interface (API) issues relating to using
HIP in situations in which the system is HIP-aware but the
applications are not, and is intended to aid implementors and early
adopters in thinking about and locally solving systems issues
regarding the incremental deployment of HIP.

Description of Working Group:

The Host Identity Protocol (HIP) provides a method of separating the
end-point identifier and locator roles of IP addresses. It introduces
a new Host Identity (HI) name space, based on public keys. The public
keys are typically, but not necessarily, self generated.

The specifications for the architecture and protocol details for these
mechanisms consist of:

HIP Architecture (RFC 4423)
Host Identity Protocol (RFC 5201)

There are several publicly known interoperating implementations, some
of which are open source.

Currently, the HIP base protocol works well with any pair of
co-operating end-hosts. However, to be more useful and more widely
deployable, HIP needs some support from the existing infrastructure,
including the DNS, and a new piece of infrastructure, called the HIP
rendezvous server.

+-------------------------------------------------------+
The purpose of this Working Group is to define the
minimal infrastructure elements that are needed for
HIP experimentation on a wide scale.
+-------------------------------------------------------+

At this point, the missing elements for running such wide-scale
experiments are a NAT traversal solution, a description on the
interactions between legacy (i.e., HIP unaware) applications and HIP,
and a native API for HIP. Additionally, the working group will
specify, also in Experimental RFCs, how to build HIP-based
overlays. HIP-based overlays have received a lot of attention in
different fora and are seen as a key area for HIP experimentation
where the benefits HIP brings may be most relevant.

Note that even though the specifications are chartered for
Experimental, it is understood that their quality and security
properties should match the standards track requirements. The main
purpose for producing Experimental documents instead of standards
track ones are the unknown effects that the mechanisms may have on
applications and on the Internet at large.

In parallel to this working group, there is an IRTF Research Group
with a broader scope that includes efforts both on developing the more
forward looking aspects of the HIP architecture and on exploring the
effects that HIP may have on the applications and the Internet.

The following are charter items for the working group:

o Specify how legacy (i.e., HIP unaware) applications can be made to
work with HIP.

o Specify a solution for HIP to traverse legacy (i.e., HIP unaware)
NATs. This solution will be based on existing NAT traversal mechanisms
such as ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment).

o Specify a native HIP socket API.

o Specify a framework to build HIP-based overlays. This framework will
describe how HIP can perform some of the tasks needed to build an
overlay and how technologies developed somewhere else (e.g., a peer
protocol developed in the P2PSIP WG) can complement HIP by performing
the tasks HIP was not designed to perform.

o Specify how to generate ORCHIDs from other node identifiers
including both cryptographic ones (leading to cryptographic
delegation) and non-cryptographic ones (e.g., identifiers defined by a
peer protocol).

o Specify how to carry certificates in the base exchange. This was
removed from the base HIP spec so that the mechanism is specified in a
stand-alone spec.

o Specify how to carry upper-layer data over specified HIP
packets. These include some of the existing HIP packets and possibly
new HIP packets (e.g., a HIP packet that occurs outside a HIP base
exchange).

Hi,

as you know, our new charter has just been approved:

http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/hip-charter.html

Now we need to finish our old chartered items and start working on our
new ones. Below you have the list of all (old and new) chartered items
with their current status. We need a WG draft for each of our chartered
items.

For some of them we already have individual submissions that could
become WG items. Please, let us know whether you support the given
individual submission to become the official draft for that chartered
item or if you want us to consider additional drafts.

For other chartered items, we still do not even have a related
individual submission (although we know of people working of those
issues). We encourage those people to submit a draft on those topics for
the WG's consideration.

> The following are charter items for the working group:
>
> o Specify how legacy (i.e., HIP unaware) applications can be made to
> work with HIP.

The authors of the official draft are working on addressing the
discusses received:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-hip-applications-04.txt

> o Specify a solution for HIP to traverse legacy (i.e., HIP unaware)
> NATs. This solution will be based on existing NAT traversal
> mechanisms such as ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment).

We have a design team working on this. They are working with the MMUSIC
folks in order to reuse their definitions of the ICE procedures.

> o Specify a native HIP socket API.

We have an official draft:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-hip-native-api-04.txt

Some time ago, we decided to wait for the NAT traversal and HIP-based
overlays work to be more mature before publishing this draft. This way,
the API defined by the draft will have better chances to be future proof.

> o Specify a framework to build HIP-based overlays. This framework
> will describe how HIP can perform some of the tasks needed to build
> an overlay and how technologies developed somewhere else (e.g., a
> peer protocol developed in the P2PSIP WG) can complement HIP by
> performing the tasks HIP was not designed to perform.

We have the following individual submission:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-camarillo-hip-bone-01.txt

Would people support this draft to become a WG item?

> o Specify how to generate ORCHIDs from other node identifiers
> including both cryptographic ones (leading to cryptographic
> delegation) and non-cryptographic ones (e.g., identifiers defined by
> a peer protocol).

We still do not have any individual submission for this chartered item.

> o Specify how to carry certificates in the base exchange. This was
> removed from the base HIP spec so that the mechanism is specified in
> a stand-alone spec.

We have the following individual submission:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-varjonen-hip-cert-00.txt

Would people support this draft to become a WG item?

> o Specify how to carry upper-layer data over specified HIP packets.

We still do not have any individual submission for this chartered item.

Yes, I support this draft. We also need to begin work on some of the
HIP extensions for multi-hop overlay routing which are mentioned in this
draft, and discussed in more detail in
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-matthews-p2psip-hip-hop-00. I'm
looking forward to contributing to this work.

Thanks,
Alan

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Host Identity Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Basic Socket Interface Extensions for Host Identity Protocol (HIP)
	Author(s) : M. Komu, T. Henderson
	Filename : draft-ietf-hip-native-api-05.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2008-07-14

This document defines extensions to the current sockets API for Host
Identity Protocol (HIP). The extensions focus on the use of public-
key based identifiers discovered via DNS resolution, but define also
interfaces for manual bindings between HITs and locators. With the
extensions, the application can also support more relaxed security
models where the communication can be non-HIP based, according to
local policies. The extensions in document are experimental and
provide basic tools for futher experimentation with policies.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-hip-native-api-05.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Host Identity Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Basic HIP Extensions for Traversal of Network Address Translators
	Author(s) : M. Komu, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-hip-nat-traversal-04.txt
	Pages : 27
	Date : 2008-07-14

The Host Identity Protocol (HIP) provides a new namespace that can be
used for uniquely identifying hosts. Existing HIP experimental
specifications do not specify protocol operations across Network
Address Translators (NATs).
This document specifies basic NAT traversal extensions for HIP. The
HIP shim layer is located between the network and transport layer,
the extensions can also provide a more general-purpose NAT traversal
support for higher-layer networking applications. The extensions are
based on the use of the The Interactive Connectivity Establishment
(ICE) methodology to discover a working path between two end-hosts.

Folks,

in our slot in Dublin we would like to present the status of our old WG
items, including a presentation by the NAT traversal design team, and
our new charter.

http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/08jul/agenda/hip.html

Additionally, if someone would like to present work related to our new
charter items, please let us know.

Thanks,

Gonzalo

Hello=2C

I am reading about the HIP protocol and really can't understand the differe=
nce between a HIT and LSI. Especially what's the meaning of local scope of =
an LSI???

and for the HITs=2C is there any entity which manages their generation and =
assign them to hosts?? or each host generates its own HIT???
same thing for LSIs generation??

I rely on your help please
thanks a lot

Hi folks,

I have updated the issue tracker on draft-ietf-hip-nat-traversal-04.
Issue tracker is located in:

http://hip4inter.net/cgi-bin/roundup.cgi/hip-nat/index

Closed issues:
25: Authorship changes. Ari is now editor and we have only 5 authors.
26. Keepalive format. Added better explanations to section 3.5 on
control and data plane keepalives
27: Demuxing ESP and STUN. Added text on section 4.3 how to demux ESP
and STUN from each other.
30: STUN connectivity check details added in section 4.2.
31: Remove all firewall references from the draft.
32. ESP without udp encapsulation. Added new section 3.7 to the draft.
33: Clarifications on rvs and relay differences in section 1.
34: Moved appendix b (Base Exchange without ICE Connectivity Checks) to
the body of the document (now in section 3.6).
35: Remove HIP connectivity checks. ICE integrity protection is now
mandatory and therefore HIP connectivity checks are not needed with
UDP.36: Dependency to draft-heer-hip-middle-auth. Added text and
references to section 5.3.

Open issues:
28: Pacing of ice connectivity checks
29. Synchronize terminology with draft-rosenberg-mmusic-ice-nonsip.
37: Constant state at the Relay. Section 4.4 includes a nonce field in
RELAY_TO and RELAY_FROM parameters to allow Relay enforce strict
relaying with constant state requirements. Remove this?
39: Agressive vs. regular nomination. Should the draft recommend either?
40: Specify the format of NAT_TRANSFORM
41: When to start collecting the ICE candidates is underspecified in 3.3
42: Single component and media stream being used, reference ICE spec.
43: Clarifications (of details) to creating of ICE password
44: Bundling of different locator types
45: Locator parameter details corrections.
46: ICE controlled flag. Must be introduced if we want gateway feature
of ice-non-sip.
47: Overview of operations. Add a non-normative "overview of operations"
section of what we are doing (similar to sec 2 of ICE).
48: Add a section that explains TURN usage with an example.
49: Add more demuxing details

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : Security Parameter Index multiplexed Network Address Translation (SPINAT)
	Author(s) : J. Melen, et al.
	Filename : draft-melen-spinat-01.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2008-07-27

This drafts defines a Security Parameter Index multiplexed Network
Address Translator (SPINAT). The SPINAT method uses the SPI value of
ESP packets to de-multiplex multiple IP addresses on single IP
address. The solution presented in this draft requires a state in
the SPINAT node and in the peer node. The state establishment
requires a control signaling messages carrying the SPI values.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-melen-spinat-01.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : Host Identity Protocol based Mobile Router (HIPMR)
	Author(s) : J. Melen, et al.

	Pages : 28
	Date : 2008-07-27

This drafts defines a moving network support for HIP enabled hosts.
The protocol uses asymmetric authentication and symmetric
authorization. The solution presented in this draft is based on
delegation of signalling rights between mobile nodes and mobile
routers that results in route optimization between end-hosts.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:

Folks,

we have just submitted the following draft:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-nikander-hip-hiccups-00.txt

It relates to the following item in our charter:

o Specify how to carry upper-layer data over specified HIP
packets. These include some of the existing HIP packets and possibly
new HIP packets (e.g., a HIP packet that occurs outside a HIP base
exchange).

The draft includes discussions about when it is appropriate to use such
a mechanism and some of the trade offs involved. Once we have more
discussions on this topic, we will need to fill in more details,
especially on the interactions with overlays. We hope to receive
comments on the list.

Thanks,

Gonzalo

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'Using the Host Identity Protocol with Legacy Applications '
   <draft-ietf-hip-applications-04.txt> as an Experimental RFC

This document is the product of the Host Identity Protocol Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Mark Townsley and Jari Arkko.

A URL of this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-hip-applications-04.txt

Technical Summary

The Host Identity Protocol (HIP) and architecture proposes to add a
cryptographic name space for network stack names. From an
application viewpoint, HIP-enabled systems support a new address
family of host identifiers, but it may be a long time until such HIP-
aware applications are widely deployed even if host systems are
upgraded. This informational document discusses implementation and
API issues relating to using HIP in situations in which the system is
HIP-aware but the applications are not.

Working Group Summary

Was there anything in WG process that is worth noting? For
example, was there controversy about particular points or
were there decisions where the consensus was particularly
rough?

No.

Document Quality

This document is based on the experiences of several HIP implementors.

The Document PROTO Shepherd is Gonzalo Camarillo

Gonzalo, Pekka, and Jan,

I think the draft is a nice overview of the issues and possibilities of
extending HIP, but it stops short of discussing what the API might look
like, which in my opinion is going to be the hard part of this effort.

I was thinking that, to complete the charter item, we will need a
document that might be entitled something like "HIP as a service." This
document would specify an API (like a library) that signaling protocols
could write to. Then, depending on the API we want to offer, we might
need to extend HIP. If we want to go in that direction, then the next
step might be to discuss what should the API look like.

Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom,

the idea with this draft is the following:

o define a HIP DATA packet as discussed in the past.
o discuss the trade offs involved in the use of this packet. We gain
efficiency but lose DoS protection.
o discuss under which circumstances implementations may want to use DATA
and also under which circumstances an implementation wants to accept or
reject DATA (e.g., in some cases, an application that is part of a
trusted overlay may want to accept DATA).
o when an implementation does not want to accept DATA (e.g., because of
DoS concerns), it needs to be able to return an R1 to start a base
exchange instead.

The reason why, at this point, the document does not spend time defining
DATA is because we wanted to stress the importance of the discussions
on why it is appropriate to use such a mechanism. We will be introducing
the definition of DATA in future revisions of the draft.

With respect to the API, we decided to wait with the API draft until the
NAT traversal and overlay work is in a more advanced state so that we
have a clearer picture on the requirements for a HIP API.

Thanks for the comments,

Gonzalo

I wasn't suggesting to spend time defining DATA now, but to define how
the user of DATA perceives the service that DATA provides.

The HICCUPS draft briefly states what is the purpose of this service--
to provide carriage of signaling messages between hosts, while solving
for the signaling protocol all of the details of NAT traversal,
mobility, multihoming. This, to me, would be clearly a nice service to
provide, and I don't know how much more you need to justify it.

However, there are a lot of details that need to be resolved, such as:
- what are the delivery semantics (reliable, unreliable) of such
messages?
- what are the security semantics? From a server perspective, should
application be able to select a listening service that uses base
exchange or not, or should that detail be hidden from the signaling
application? Can/should applications specify what source HIT should be
used? Should applications be able to provide or load their own host
identity? Should opportunistic mode be supported, and how is this mode
controlled?
- can applications use this service by providing a URL or by providing
only a destination HIT?
- does the application provide hints as to which overlay the destination
HIT has stored its bindings?
- what kind of other policy can an application flow down to the HIP
daemon, and how is it communicated at the API?
- do locators (addresses) play any role at the API level?
- what kind of error codes are provided back to the signaling
applications?

I don't think we can fully specify DATA until we understand how the
above questions are answered.

Yes, these issues (overlay, native API, HICCUPS) are all bound together,
but I think that to move forward on the protocol details, we first have
to have a clear vision as to what is the service API we are trying to
support.

Hi,

in my view, all the non-API-related stuff you propose, belongs to this
draft. All the API-related stuff belongs somewhere else (i.e., in the
HIP API draft).

Cheers,

Gonzalo

Currently, the HIP native API draft is not scoped to include providing a
signaling carriage service; it is oriented towards providing traditional
ESP service.

Would you like the scope of draft-ietf-hip-native-api expanded, then?

That was my assumption, but if people think that having two different
documents would be a clearer solution, that would work for me as well.
It would be great to hear more opinions on this.

Cheers,
