A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Home Networking WG of the IETF.

Title : Special Use Domain 'home.arpa.'
        Authors : Pierre Pfister
                          Ted Lemon
	Filename : draft-ietf-homenet-dot-14.txt
	Pages : 11
	Date : 2017-09-01

Abstract:
This document specifies the behavior that is expected from the Domain
Name System with regard to DNS queries for names ending with
'.home.arpa.', and designates this domain as a special-use domain
name. 'home.arpa.' is designated for non-unique use in residential
home networks. Home Networking Control Protocol (HNCP) is updated to
use the 'home.arpa.' domain instead of '.home'.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:

There are also htmlized versions available at:

Hello,

just one question for some better understanding ...

I read this line

"The domain name 'home.arpa.' is to be used for naming within
residential homenets."

when this draft becomes an RFC - hopefully this year 2017 - then there=20
exists
an RFC, which gives you a domain name you can use in a home network/LAN
without conflicting to other things ..., the domain name 'home.arpa'

but there still doesn't exist any for company networks, they most=20
commonly use
the domain name 'local', which I already noticed, that this conflicts to =

RFC 6762 ...

Thanks,
Walter

That problem is not within the scope of the homenet working group to =

Around 2 months ago (AKA, *just* before the draft cutoff) I wrote
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-wkumari-dnsop-internal-00 -- this is
specifically designed to be a reservation for a companies /
organizations / test networks / disconnected networks, etc to be able
to use.

So far it has generated basically no discussion -- some of the purpose
was simply to more fully discuss the issues, etc surrounding this sort
of issue.
Note that the document is not very well written, it was written on a
plane and submitted in a rush.

Jumpin' in the middle here.

The root proves that .arpa exists. .arpa proves that home.arpa exists,
but, as there is no DS record, it also proves that names under
home.arpa are insecure, and so we can create foo.home.arpa,
bar.home.arpa, etc.

If recursive resolvers at sites using 'home.arpa.' DID NOT
transparently support DNSSEC queries, then validating stubs would not
be able to query the .arpa servers, and get back the proof showing
that home.arpa is insecure, and so we would not make foo.home.arpa
exist. Of course, if recursive resolvers at sites using 'home.arpa.'
DID NOT transparently support DNSSEC queries they would break ALL
validation, and validating stubs wouldn't be able to resolve anything
at all...

Yes, I think this is consistent with the point I am making.

Regardless, I've removed my Discuss, so I don't think there's a lot of
point in continuing to debate this.

The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'Special Use Domain 'home.arpa.''
  (draft-ietf-homenet-dot-14.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Home Networking Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Suresh Krishnan and Terry Manderson.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-homenet-dot/

Technical Summary

>> This document updates RFC 7788 (Home Networking Control Protocol),
>> eliminating the recommendation for ".home" as the default top-level
>> name for name resolution within a homenet and replacing it with
>> ".home.arpa." per the RFC 6761 process.

Working Group Summary

>> The working group was strongly opposed to the idea of redacting the
>> ".home" TLD without a replacement TLD requested at the same time.
>> Upon granting of ".home.arpa." the open source homenet reference
>> implementation will be updated accordingly (but not before, as
>> removing the default TLD with no replacement would result in a
>> non-working system).

Document Quality

>> Existing open source implementations of the HNCP protocol do contain
>> the originally specified ".home" value, but it is expected that they
>> will change to ".home.arpa." on approval

Personnel

>> Ray Bellis is the document shepherd. Terry Manderson is the
>> responsible AD.

IANA Note

>> Please note the interaction required with the IAB to create a delegation as requested in Section 7 of the document.

Just to note that Terry's now added me as a co-chair, so Ray's
rest is getting closer:-)

I look forward to working with Barbara, Ray and you all to help
the WG complete it's work so feel free to ping me if there's
stuff where I can help,

Cheers,

Notes
-----
Section 13 (IANA Considerations) of the document says:

      37: DHCPv4-Data

      38: DHCPv6-Data

Those code points from Section 13 are in the "HNCP TLV Types" IANA registry as well as in the current source code of shncpd and tcpdump. The code points shown in Sections 10.2.2 and 10.2.3 were likely swapped by mistake.

Confirmed, this is consistent with both known implementations of HNCP, as
well as with the tcpdump parser. This was also confirmed by Markus Stenberg
in a mail dated 9 June 2016 to myself and the former Homenet chairs.

With the transition of 'home.arpa' to Proposed Standard, this might be a =
good time to review the state of Homenet wrt its use by people outside =
this list.=20

My interest is that I did some work on the homewrt.org web site back in =
December. As the person who "touched it last", I feel somewhat =
responsible for its truth. But I haven't followed the discussions on =
this list closely (blame my other projects!), so I don't know whether =
the descriptions on the site match the current implementations.=20

My questions fall in two parts:

1) Homenet/hncp implementations:=20

- What implementations are available?=20
- Are they being tested and/or updated?
- Are they usable by "outsiders" - that is, with simple installs on =
common platforms?

2) www.homewrt.org site:=20

- Is the Technical Overview page still correct? =
http://homewrt.org/about/overview
- Are the various setup instructions still correct? =
http://homewrt.org/installation/start
- Are there other pages on the site that need updates?

The Homewrt.org wiki can be edited by anyone who's a member (and it's =
trivial to join). I encourage everyone here to review the site and =
update it where needed.=20

Thanks, and best regards,

Rich=

Hiya,

Just an early heads-up about the draft
submission cutoff for IETF-100 - that's
not for a month yet [1] but hey - time
flies if you let it:-)

Also, if folks know already that you'd
like some agenda time for a topic that's
not already a WG item, now would be a
fine time to start a thread on the mailing
list.

Cheers,
S.
