Did you know that the EPA is about to dramitcally lower the arsenic count in 
water? You may say, "well how in the world does this apply to me?" Well it does.  
Almost everything that you deal with has some link to water in some way shape or 
form. Refining water will become more expensive and the products that you buy that 
depend on water will become more costly. Imagine a company that will be able to 
remove the necessary amounts of arsenic at a fraction of the cost that other 
companies charge.

NuElectric is a company that will do just that. A lady by the name of Dagmar 
Bonnin, developed an innovative, versatile, and less expensive process while 
working as a professor at the University of South Florida. Her technology will 
easily reduce the contamination to a much lower level specified by the government, 
thereby helping to maintain safe water supplies at an affordable price.

Trace quantities of arsenic occur naturally in surface and groundwater supplies in 
many areas of the country; particularly in the Midwest. But that's not the major 
problem. Arsenic has many industrial uses, such as hardening of copper and lead 
alloys, pigmentation in paints and fireworks, and the manufacture of glass, cloth, 
and electrical semiconductors. In the past, it was also used in the production of 
agricultural pesticides including herbicides and insecticides, and in desiccants, 
wood preservatives, and feed additives. The runoff from these uses as well as the 
leaching of arsenic from waste generated by them has caused increased levels of 
soluble arsenic in the nation's water supplies.

Modified Zeolite Minerals

Dr. Bonnin's process of removing the arsenic uses modified Zeolite minerals, which 
are common, readily available alumina-silicate minerals. The modification involves 
exposing the zeolites to concentrated ferrous aqueous solutions to form an 
iron-laden Zeolite mineral, thereby increasing the zeolite's affinity for arsenic. 
When contact is made between contaminated water and the zeolites, the zeolites act 
as sorbents, chemically bonding with the arsenic, and are then removed. The 
minerals can be used in a column as a filter, or they can be prepared in powdered 
form and used in an existing water treatment plant.

Advantages over Other Processes

 - Bonnin's process is superior to existing methods in several ways.
 - The Zeolite process removes both forms of arsenate and arsenite.
 - No need for the additional steps and expenses of oxidation.
 - No expense for disposal.

When compared to other specific methods, Bonnin's process has a variety of 
advantages. For example, activated alumina is used in one such method, but in 
order to make it economically feasible, reconditioning of the sorbent for 
subsequent reuse is necessary. This process itself creates a hazardous solution 
that requires further treatment and, ultimately, the expense of disposal. 
Activated carbon and flyash can also be used, but activated carbon has a limited 
natural capacity for arsenic species and is expensive. In the case of flyash, a 
waste product produced in large quantities at coal power stations, the properties 
of any given batch of flyash depend on the particular fuel in use. As a result, 
quality control and the flyash's capacity for arsenic species are difficult to 
maintain. Also, because flyash is produced only in a powdered form, it has limited 
application in column separation.

One of the key advantages of Bonnin's method is related to both cost and safety. 
Because the zeolites are inexpensive, they do not have to be reused to make the 
process economically viable and because the arsenicladen zeolites that are the end 
product have passed the EPA's Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure Test, 
they can be simply and safely disposed of in a non-hazardous waste landfill.

Conference Scope:

This conference follows the two successful ATM conferences events held in
Colmar, France in 1998 and 1999. The conference scope has been extended to
deal with the different topics related to Multiservice Network
Architectures, and Implementation, including among others, protocols,
signaling, traffic flow, addressing schemes, …

Fundamental questions still have to find an answer, such as:

How will the Internet, symbol of freedom, compete with the world of
traditional carrier networks or cooperate with it? 
Will alternate Technologies be needed to meet high level quality of service
requirements ?
What restrictions, if any, will result on the desired degree of freedom ?

Emphasis shall be put upon network convergence, including fixed/mobile
convergence  satisfying the needs of person to person communications, as
well as  Information and Entertainment applications.

The scope of ECUMN'2000 encompasses but is not limited to:

Evolution of Telecommunication Networks Architecture:

With such a variety of problems to be solved, and such high economical
interests at stake there is a definite interest to exchange ideas,
technical results and proposals, between the academic and industrial
communities and this is the major goal of the conference.

Instructions for Authors:

Mail four paper versions or E-mail preferably in Word 6 format, or
alternately a postscript version of a 2000-word extended abstract
summarizing an original work finalized or in progress. All the manuscripts
must be written in English. The top of the first page of each paper should
include the title of the paper, authors' name, position, address, telephone
and fax numbers, Email of the author responsible for correspondence and a
list of four keywords at least. 

Authors of accepted papers will be invited to submit full-length
manuscripts for inclusion in the proceedings. All submitted papers should

I've already sent the authors some comments on the Appendix
a few weeks ago.

I just got a chance to go through the sections on Host behavior,
so here's my comments on those sections.  I still have not had
a chance to review the Router behavior sections.

I found at least 2 things in the protocol itself that look broken.

Comments on draft-ietf-idmr-igmp-v3-02.txt

Section 3.2, clarifying question:
Text says a host may limit size of source list whose filter mode is INCLUDE.
Does this wording mean a host MUST NOT limit the size of source list
for EXCLUDE?

Section 5.1, I believe the behavior specified here is broken:
> If more changes to the same interface state entry occur before all the
> retransmissions of the State-Change Report for the first change have
> been completed, each such additional change triggers the immediate
> transmission of a State-Change Report reflecting the difference between
> the newest state and the state *before* the first change for which
> retransmissions were not completed.

The reason the above is broken is because of the table preceding it,
and the sentence after the table:
> If the computed source list for either an ALLOW or a BLOCK State-Change
> Record is empty, that record is omitted from the Report message.

Example of broken scenario:
1) App joins group normally, i.e. IPMulticastListen(s,i,m,EXCLUDE,{})
2) Kernel sends TO_EX({}) [Robustness] times over the appropriate time
   internal.  Router gets this, everyone is happy.
3) App excludes a new source, i.e. IPMulticastListen(s,i,m,EXCLUDE,{A})
4) Kernel sends a triggered BLOCK({A}) and sets retransmission timer
   to random value up to 10 seconds.  Router receives this message.
5) Before the timer expires, App un-excludes the source. i.e. 
   IPMulticastListen(s,i,m,EXCLUDE,{})
   Since the retransmissions are not completed, the new change
   triggers the immediate transmission ... reflecting the difference
   between the newest state and the state after step 2.
   Since this state is identical, no messages are sent because
   of the second blurb quoted above (this also applies if the app
   instead left the whole group and rejoined it).
6) Regardless of whether the retransmission timer was restarted, 
   deleted, or left untouched, no further messages are triggered
   because the newest state, and the last fully-transmitted state
   are identical.  At this point, the application has asked to receive
   A, and the router is blocking it, resulting in a black hole.
This black hole continues until the next Query is received and
responded to, which can be up to 125 seconds later.

Summary: 0 packets lost, IGMPv3 causes black hole for up to 125 seconds.
(Or, if you prefer, you could say that "join latency is up to 125
seconds" since this is upon rejoining a left group or source).

Section 5.2, clarifying question:
If you receive two group-and-source-specific queries with
partially overlapping source lists, where neither is a subset of 
the other, current spec says you reply to both of them, meaning 
you may report some sources twice.  Is this the intended behavior?

Sections 7.2, 7.2.3, 8.12 are contradictory/broken regarding receipt of
IGMPv2 queries while in IGMPv1 Mode:
7.2 states:
> Each time a non-version 3 query is received, a host sets a timer: Older
> Version Querier Present Timeout.
8.12 agrees with the above, saying:
> The Older Version Querier Interval is the time-out for transitioning a
> host back to IGMPv3 mode once an older version query is heard.  When an
> older version query is received, hosts set their Older Version Querier
> Present Timer to Older Version Querier Interval.
Both of the above paragraphs say that the timer is reset when an
IGMPv2 Query is received while in IGMPv1 Mode.
7.2.3 on the other hand, contradicts them.  On the arrow for "R2Q"
coming out of "V1 Mode", the "RT" (reset timer) event is NOT shown,
hence the contradiction.

If the 7.2/8.12 behavior is correct (meaning you reset the timer),
then you can have a situation where only IGMPv2 routers exist, but
the host is stuck permanently in IGMPv1 mode.  This seems broken.

If the 7.2.3 diagram is instead correct and 7.2 and 8.12 are wrong,
then you can have a situation where only IGMPv2 routers exist now
(IGMPv1 router went away), and the host has just fallen back to IGMPv3 
mode due to the timer expiration.  Now all triggered reports (until 
the next IGMPv2 Query arrives up to 125 seconds later) will be IGMPv3 
reports that will be ignored by all routers.  This seems equally broken.

I think there needs to be two separate timers, 
a "Version 1 Querier Present Timer", and
a "Version 2 Querier Present Timer".

Section 7.2.1, contradiction in spec:
Table shows that an IGMPv2 report is sent in response to an IGMPv2
Query (and so on).  

However, the text preceding the table says that the version of report
sent depends on what version mode it's in, not the query version.
So in the case where the host is in (say) IGMPv2 mode, and it
receives an IGMPv3 query from a router that has restarted but has
not yet yielded to an older version querier (as 7.2 puts it),
should the host:
 a) send an IGMPv2 Report (according to the text before the table),
 b) send an IGMPv3 Report (according to the table), or
 c) ignore the query (can't find anywhere that says to do this) ?

Option A is less restrictive so I am in favor of that one.

The IESG feedback on the Multicast MIB was that we need IANA
guidelines on how to assign new values for unicast and multicast
routing protocols.  Page 5 of RFC 2434 provides several possibilities,
including (see RFC for description):
   Private Use
   Hierarchical allocation
   First Come First Served
   Expert Review
   Specification Required
   IESG Approval
   IETF Consensus
   Standards Action

Based on reviewing various existing IANA-maintained MIBs
and what they require, in my opinion, the "designated expert" 
would work here, as might requiring RFCs.

So to steal language from existing RFCs, here are two
strawmen (pick one, or suggest alternative):
