If the user specifies INADDR_ANY in the ip_mreq_source structure, there are 3 things you could do: 1) just like IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP and IP_DROP_MEMBERSHIP, assume the default interface for this group 2) perform the operation on all interfaces this socket used to subscribe to the specified group 3) much like 1), but instead assume the default interface towards the specified source What would be the best action ? When the prunes on all the downstream dependent interfaces timeout, SG state is removed from the router (putting it back to the default behaviour of flooding on all downstream dependent intfs when data arrives next time). A downstream router need not graft back when prune timer expires. Upstream will automatically time it out. But it may be required for interoperability reasons. Vijay, Prune messages create state in the routers, to remember which branches are pruned off the delivery tree for a given (source, group) pair. If there were no prune timers, that state would last forever, even though the traffic from the source had long since terminated. Thus, the prune timers are used for garbage collection of the state created by prune messages. But, as I understand from the DVMRP draft the forwarding/routing of a multicast datagram should be based on Source and Group Address (SG) and not source address alone.(RPF check is only done based on the source) Hence, why is the group address not included in the RouteNextHopTable. While, on the Linux router, multicast misses most of the kernel fast paths, and you need to copy the packet to userspace. I would imagine on the Cisco, this is all done very close to hardware. In any case, that wouldn't account for the huge difference you are seeing, that is most likely a problem with the pimd program.
