I expected that was part of it - the target FSM wasn't
the one that finally got published.

>Here's a proposal for wording that matches the
>FSM of RFC 4271.

Seems reasonable. My only suggestion is to change the
order of the following:

> If the local system receives a NOTIFICATION message (Event 24 or
> Event 25) or if the Graceful Restart capability with one or more
> AFI/SAFI has not been received for the session and the local
> system receives a TcpConnectionFails (Event 18) from the
> underlying TCP, the local system:

to "..or if the system receives ... and the Graceful Restart
capability .. has not been received ..." -- since the trigger
is "receives a TcpConnectionFails" and then the condition of
whether it picks this rule or the next one is the capability.
I'd suggest rephrasing the other conditional similarly:

> However, if the Graceful Restart capability with one or more
> AFI/SAFI has been received for the session and the local system
> receives a TcpConnectionFails (Event 18) from the underlying TCP,
> the local system:

Otherwise, it makes sense. I agree that there's no need to
add a zero-time state to make this decision, and conditions
in order to decide the proper transition are OK.

When you update the draft with these changes, would you please consider
my other comments (on an IANA considerations section and guidance on
setting the timer) at the same time?

Thanks,
  Bill

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Inter-Domain Routing Working Group of the IETF.

Title : AS-wide Unique BGP Identifier for BGP-4
	Author(s)	: E. Chen, J. Yuan
	Filename	: draft-ietf-idr-bgp-identifier-07.txt
	Pages : 5
	Date : 2006-5-16

To accommodate situations where the current requirements for the BGP
Identifier are not met, this document relaxes the definition of the
BGP Identifier to be a 4-octet unsigned, non-zero integer, and
relaxes the "uniqueness" requirement so that only AS-wide uniqueness
of the BGP Identifiers is required. These revisions to the base BGP
specification do not introduce any backward compatibility issue.

type "cd internet-drafts" and then

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"

a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split

	Filename	: draft-ietf-idr-bgp-prefix-orf-03.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 2006-5-16

This document defines a new Outbound Router Filter type for BGP,
termed "Address Prefix Outbound Route Filter", that can be used to
perform address prefix based route filtering. This ORF-type supports
prefix length or range based matching, wild-card based address prefix
matching, as well as the exact address prefix matching for address
families.

Implementation Survey for BGP ORF and Prefix-ORF
      ------------------------------------------------

 Organization:

 Person filling out this form:

 Implementation (software version):

List the ORF types that are implemented in your implementation:

    a) communities ORF: Yes/No
    b) extended communities ORF: Yes/No
    c) prefix ORF: Yes/No

Does your implementation follow the normal procedures for handling
a ROUTE-REFRESH request that does not carry ORF entries?

Does your implementation defer route advertisements as specified in
the specification after receiving ORF entries with "when-to-refresh"
 set to DEFER?

How does your implementation handle route advertisements after
receiving ORF entries with "when-to-refresh" set to IMMEDIATE?

    a) re-advertise all routes in the Adj-RIB-OUT for the AFI/SAFI
(i.e., follow the normal ROUTE-REFRESH procedure), but take
       the ORF entries into account.

                 Yes/No

    b) maintain extra state and do not re-advertise the routes that
have not been effected by the ORF entries, as suggested by
       the specification.

                 Yes/No

Does your implementation follow all other procedures specified in
the Operation Section of the specification?

Has there been any interoperability testing? List the ORF types tested.

Are there parts of the specification that are unclear where the
implementor had to exercise some judgment that may impact the
 implementation and/or interoperability?

   a) ORF base spec:

   b) Prefix-ORF spec:

I was looking at RFC 2283 (Multiprotocol Extensions for BGP-4) and in
the overview, it mentions that any BGP speaker has to have an IPv4
address (to create the BGP Identifier attribute). This does not bode
well for the future of IPv6, to which I am sensitized by some ongoing
Government work.

Talking to some who have created IPv6-only environments, it seems that
they are only dealing with single subnets or very simple topologies, so
BGP has not been an issue. I also looked back in the IDR archives for a
rationale, but could not find such a discussion recently.

So, what is someone to do who wants to create an IPv6-only environment?
Is it up to those defining (the future) version BGP-5 to create BGP
identifiers longer than 32 bits or AS numbers longer than 16 bits (while
we're at it), to accommodate the incredibly larger world of IPv6 (with
128-bit addresses)? Or was it a compromise in RFC 2283 to ignore the
IPv6-only world (assuming it won't really happen on operational networks
for decades) and therefore retain backward compatibility? That's
valuable in the short term, but not forever.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Walt Lazear

I believe that the authors of RFC 2283 were taking the IETF
recommendation wrt IPv6 deployment seriously: initially, don't deploy
IPv6-only, but rather deploy dual stack. The network of which you
speak will have to figure out how to support IPv4 equipment, if for
no other reason because not all equipment will be upgraded
simultaneously. It is in that network's best interest, I believe, to
go dual stack initially and only switch to IPv6-only when the
equipment is supports has all been upgraded to also support IPv6.

That said, your point that BGP needs to be able to operate in an IPv6-
only environment is valid. I believe that a solution may be to have
it associate router IDs with addresses, and use router ids in these
three places. Not that I wouldn't like to replace BGP with something
new, but I don't see that happening in the near term.

Thanks to those who pointed out the documents I had missed, that defined
BGP Identifier as something other than an IPv4 address and enlarged the
AS number space. While it was disappointing not to have an algorithm to
help derive the BGP ID (like using parts of a MAC address or an IPv6
address), the definition is at least protocol independent and can be
manually configured. Sorry I had missed the document and discussion,
but I recently joined the mailing list.

In my note, I was referring not to a transitioning network (for which I
heartily agree that dual stack is the right transition mechanism), but
to someone who wanted to build an IPv6-only network from scratch. This
could be done in a detached testbed or network, with no connectivity to
the public Internet. The new documents help make that possible.

Thanks again.

Walt

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Inter-Domain Routing Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Graceful Restart Mechanism for BGP
	Author(s)	: S. Sangli, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-idr-restart-11.txt
	Pages : 11
	Date : 2006-5-25

This document proposes a mechanism for BGP that would help minimize
the negative effects on routing caused by BGP restart. An End-of-RIB
marker is specified and can be used to convey routing convergence
information. A new BGP capability, termed "Graceful Restart
Capability", is defined which would allow a BGP speaker to express
its ability to preserve forwarding state during BGP restart. Finally,
procedures are outlined for temporarily retaining routing information
across a TCP transport reset.

The mechanisms described in this document are applicable to all
routers, both those with the ability to preserve forwarding state
during BGP restart and those without (although the latter need to
implement only a subset of the mechanisms described in this
document).
